Elizabeth S. Binz

Elizabeth Steele Strickland Binz, 82, of Sarasota, Florida, died June 8, 2004, in Sarasota. She was born November 17, 1921 in New Haven, Connecticut, the daughter of the Rev. Daniel W. and Olive M. Strickland, formerly of Moretown.

She moved to Moretown, Vermont in 1940 and later married Amos McManis. They moved to Sarasota in 1950. After the death of her first husband, she married Barry Binz.

She was a member of the Daughters of the American Colonist, former president and governor of the Optimist (Mrs.) Club, and founder of the Arts and Crafts Guild of Sarasota.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Barry; daughters Betty Ann Carver of Cosby, Tennessee, and Kay Murdoch and Rebecca Siegel, both of Sarasota, sons Bruce McManis of Flagstaff, Arizona, Eric of Westchester County, New York, and Daniel of Sarasota; a sister, Flora Strickland Tutiakoff of Moretown; and 11 grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents; her sister Audrey White of Fort Myers, Florida; and her sons Patrick, Mark and Barry. Also surviving are her niece and nephews Sarah Holland and John Fulton of Moretown, Vermont; Scott Fulton of Boston and Andrew Fulton of Westford, Vermont.

Memorial donations maybe sent to Senior Friendship Centers, Sarasota, Florida and the Waitsfield Congregational Church, Waitsfield, Vermont.

Mirren Barrie

Mirren Barrie, 89, of Waterbury Center passed away peacefully at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Sunday, June 20, 2004. Born in Glasgow, Scotland on February 5, 1915, she was the daughter of the late John P. and Marion (Barnett) Muir. On March 23, 1942, she married Tod T. Barrie in Lanarkshire, Scotland. Mr. Barrie passed away on October 26, 1996. She and her husband had made their home in Waterbury Center since 1973.

A gifted and creative artist, Mirren was one of the leading historical and ethnic doll artists in the United States. Her work is shown in several museums and many private collections, including the Waterbury Public Library where she shows a collection of dolls commemorating Waterbury's Bicentennial. She spoke extensively on historical dolls at schools, libraries and civic organizations throughout central Vermont.

Her memberships included the National Association of American Doll Artists (NIADA), the Green Mountain Doll Club, the Renaissance Doll Club of Detroit, Michigan, the Embroiderer's Guild of America, and the Daughters of the British Empire. Locally, Mirren was active in Revitalizing Waterbury, was a red phone dispatcher for the Waterbury Ambulance Service, and was an active member of the Waterbury Congregational Church and Circle II. In her leisure time, she was an avid gardener with a great love and extensive knowledge of plants, as well as a voracious reader with a fondness of fiction, historical novels and history.

Mirren is survived by her two daughters, Sheilah B. Rostow of New Haven, CT, and Elspeth Barrie Larsen and her husband, Peter of Copenhagen, Denmark; her grandchildren, Katrin B. Larsen and Ian B. Larsen; and a niece, Claire D. Little of Newport, Oregon.

A memorial service to celebrate and remember Mirren's life will be held from the Waterbury Congregational Church at 11 a.m. on June 29, 2004. Private inurnment will take place in Hope cemetery, Waterbury. Please consider memorial gifts in lieu of flowers to the Waterbury Public Library, PO Box 9, Waterbury VT 05676. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

John A. Alberino

December 23, 2004

John A. Alberino, of Wilton, CT, and Warren, VT, died peacefully November 30, 2004 at his home of congestive heart failure.

His wife, Susan, daughter, Pamela, and son, Gio, survive him.

John was the founder of New Canaan Ski and Sport in 1976. His company has grown to include Ridgefield Ski & Sport, which was opened in October 2003.

John was born on March 28, 1933, in Capri, Italy. As a young boy, he learned to ski in the Italian Alps. Up until he came to America, he skied in Italy and Switzerland and when he discovered the wonderful skiing of Vermont, he very quickly bought a home for his family on his favorite mountain, Sugarbush, in Warren.

John had an incredible love for all sports, including skiing, tennis, and kayaking. He was active all through this year, kayaking in July and August, gardening, dropping in at the shop, and spending time with his family and employees. Everyone throughout the area enjoyed his companionship and his colorful stories about his life.

A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m., at St. Aloysius, in New Canaan, on January 4.

Frances Dodds Coolbeth

December 23, 2004

Frances Dodds Coolbeth - 91, a longtime resident of Waterbury, passed away at the Squier House in Waterbury on Tuesday, December 21, 2004. Born in North Hero on April 11, 1913, she was the daughter of the late J. Allen and Ada (Peck) Dodds. On April 14, 1939, she married Clarence Coolbeth in Waitsfield. Mr. Coolbeth passed away on November 18, 1971.

Frances was raised in North Hero and Waitsfield where she attended schools and was a graduate of Waitsfield High School. She continued her education at the Mary Fletcher School of Nursing in Burlington, graduating in 1936. She worked briefly at the Waterbury State Hospital before working in Boston and then later in Stowe as a Public Health Nurse. Moving to Waterbury in 1949, Frances worked at Waterbury Elementary and High School as the school nurse, a career in itself that spanned 24 years. She went on to work for Waterbury Public Health (now Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice) for 10 years, retiring in 1984 and following that, remained active as a volunteer for many years.

Her memberships included the Retired Senior Volunteer Program for Central Vermont, the Waterbury Congregational Church with which she held her membership since 1950, and the former Morning Star Chapter and currently the Queen Esther Chapter #7 - OES from which she received her 70 year membership pin in 2002. Frances was active in Home Demonstration and 4-H for many years. In her leisure time, she enjoyed flower gardening, traveling and visits with her family, as well as knitting.

Frances is survived by three sisters, Alleen D. Eurich of Waitsfield, Norma Barbeau of Cheney, WA, and Margaret Eggleton of Valley Head, AL; a brother, Richard Dodds of Bennington; as well as nieces, nephews and their extended families. She was predeceased by a brother, John Dodds.

Services for Frances will be held graveside in Lowell, VT, at a date and time to be announced this spring. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the Alzheimer's Association, PO Box 1139, Montpelier, VT 05601, or to Queen Esther Chapter 7 - OES, C/O Donald Kenney, 175 West St., Bolton, VT 05676.

Cora E. Bruce

December 23, 2004

Cora E. Bruce, 91, of Moretown died Saturday, December 18, 2004 at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center. She was born in Calais, Vermont, on March 27, 1913.

The daughter of Earl and Clara (Toby) Martin. She attended the Adamant School. She married Clifford Bruce on September 20, 1936 in Fort Henry, NY.

Cora had been employed at Heaton Hospital and Central Vermont Medical Center as a nurse's aid and physical therapist, retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Middlesex United Methodist Church and a charter member of the Mad River Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club and Onion River Snowmobile Club.

Cora was involved in planning and organizing the Middlesex Field Days, where she demonstrated the art of spinning wool. She and her husband raised and exhibited cattle and sheep. She dyed and spun her own wool and made many quilts. Cora was a caring, giving lady who assisted in the care of family members, as well as many area residents with health problems.

She is survived by her husband of 68 years; three sons, Philip Bruce of Plainfield, Ronald Bruce and his wife Wendie of Moretown and Martin Bruce and his wife Jean of West Berlin; six grandchildren, Scott Bruce and his wife Linda of Exeter, NH, Kevin Bruce and his wife Jan of Knottham, NH, Laurie Harrod of Wilder, VT, Sonia Bruce and her partner Scott McEwan of Wilder, Robin Elliott and her husband Michael Elliott Sr. of Moretown, Deborah Bruce of Waterbury and Nathan Bruce of W. Berlin; ten great-grandchildren, a niece Sandra (Martin) Ryan of Bristol, CT, and nephews Richard Martin of Chula Vista, CA, Donald Booth of Princeton, MA, and Douglas Booth of Colchester, VT. Two brothers, Merle and Allen Martin, preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 22, at 11 a.m. at the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, Montpelier. Memorial contributions may be made to Central Vermont Home Health, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641.

William Smith

December 23, 2004

William T. Smith, 93, of Largo, Florida, passed away quietly at home on November 14, 2004, and went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Bill was born on March 28, 1911, on the family farm in West Brookfield, MA, the eldest son of William and Natalie Smith. He moved in 1922 to the Maplewood farm in North Brookfield, MA. Bill graduated from Massachusetts Agricultural College and received his Masters of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Massachusetts State University, Amherst, MA. He taught agriculture in West Springfield and Westport, MA.

Bill was the General Manager of the Fall River Milk Producers for 25 years and a Marketing Economist for the Eastern Milk Producers Association, Syracuse, NY. Bill was born again on August 13, 1938 at the Union Church (now Calvary Bible Church) in Westport, MA, where he taught Sunday School and served as a deacon. He was active in the Gideons organization both in Fall River, MA, and Syracuse, NY. He attended North Syracuse Baptist Church and Cicero Community Church.

Bill and his wife, Emma Reed Smith, moved to Largo, Florida, in 1982, where he attended First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks and later helped to establish the Abundant Life Church at Top of the World in Clearwater, FL. Bill was pre-deceased by his wife of 62 years, Emma, in 2000, and is survived by his son, Lt Col William C. Smith of Fayston, VT, and his daughters, Bette Lou Smith of Los Angeles, CA, and Carole A. Cole of Mechanicsburg, PA, three granddaughters and a great-grandson.

A memorial service was conducted at the First Baptist Church of Indian Rocks on Friday, November 19, 2004, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made on behalf of William T. Smith, to the Gideons International. Monies collected will be used for the purchase of Bibles and New Testaments, distributed to Marines and sailors being deployed overseas.

Jennifer Lee Gonyon

December 9, 2004

Jennifer Lee Gonyon, 25, of Moretown, passed away in Moretown on Thursday, December 2, 2004. Born in Berlin on June 1, 1979, she was the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Harriman) Abare. On October 16, 2000, she married Andrew D. Gonyon in Exeter, NH.

Jennifer was a 1998 graduate of Harwood Union High School in Duxbury and continued her education, attending Johnson State College. She worked as a pharmacy technician for P&C Pharmacy in Lebanon, NH and was currently employed at the Village Grocery in Waitsfield. Jennifer's leisure time was spent enjoying quilting, reading, camping and fishing.

Her love for her husband and three children was paramount in her life. It truly embodied who she was.

Jennifer is survived by her husband, Andrew; their three children, Fayth, Mozes and Azekyal, all of Moretown; her parents, Michael Abare and his wife, Laurie of Middlesex, and Catherine Furlong and her husband, Steve of Clearwater, FL; her brothers, Justin Hoyt of Sunapee, NH and his fiancée, Brittany Hogue; and Stephan Hoyt of Wilmot, NH and his fiancée, Amy Gallagher; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Mildred Abare of Moretown; and her maternal grandmother, Mary Harriman of Waterbury.

Also surviving is Andrew's family; his parents, David and Joyce Gonyon of Duxbury; his brothers, Jeffrey, Jeremy, Jordan and Sam Gonyon all of Duxbury and Robert Sears of Kentucky; his sisters, Melissa Gonyon of South Burlington, and Andrea Dion and her husband, Jeff, of South Burlington; his maternal grandparents, Ernest and Theresa Bouchard of Winooski; and his paternal grandmother, Theresa Gonyon, of Winooski; as well as a niece, Shanna Gonyon and nephew Matthew Gonyon both of Burlington.

A Memorial Service celebrating Jennifer's life was held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Monday at 11 a.m. A reception followed in the church dining room. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated in trust for Jennifer's children to Banknorth, PO Box 360, Waterbury, VT 05676-0360. Donald Robert Terry

December 9, 2004

Donald Robert Terry, 79, of Duxbury, passed away at Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin on December 5, 2004. Born in Randolph on March 4, 1925, he was the son of the late Orman and Hazel (Tallman) Terry. On May 6, 1966, he married the former Genevieve Long in Waterbury Center.

Donald attended schools in Braintree. He was a veteran of the Korean War having served with the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, he worked at the Johnson Talc Mine and worked in drilling and blasting for the Rock of Ages Granite Co. in Graniteville. He later was employed as a carpenter by several construction companies in central Vermont, worked in manufacturing and processing for Harrington's in Richmond, and most recently was self-employed in scrap metal collection and recycling as well operating an egg distribution business.

He enjoyed listening to Red Sox and Yankee games, and was a member of Jehovah's Witnesses.

Donald is survived by his wife of Duxbury; a son, Donald R. Terry II of Duxbury; a sister, Maxine Lane of Florida and several half-sisters and brothers; as well as nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held from Jehovah's Witnesses Kingdom Hall on Route 100 in South Duxbury on Thursday, December 9, at 7 p.m. Spring interment will take place in the South Duxbury cemetery. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.

Margaret E. "Margie" Nelson

December 2, 2004

Margaret E. "Margie" Nelson, 63, passed away on Saturday, November 27, embraced by her family, in Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Born in Duxbury on September 26, 1941, she was the daughter of the late Meridan and Mildred (Farnsworth) Grandfield. On April 9, 1960, she married Meriden Nelson in Moretown.

Margaret was a 1959 graduate of Waitsfield High School and following graduation, worked several years at the Vermont State Tax Department in Montpelier. She was then employed by the National Life Insurance Co. in Montpelier where she retired as a supervisor in 1998 following 35 years of dedicated and loyal service. Never one to be idle, Margaret worked until the time of her death part-time as an assistant in the Moretown Town Clerks office.

Her memberships included the Moretown United Methodist Church and the Moretown Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary. Her leisure time was spent enjoying knitting, doing word search puzzles, spending time in Maine, camping, going for rides in the car, but in particular, spending time with her large and loving family.

Margaret is survived by her husband of 44 years, Meriden Nelson of Moretown; their son, Rick Nelson of Waitsfield; her two sisters, Marilyn Cameron and her husband, Lester of Moretown, Joan Grenier and her husband, Roger of Waterbury Center; her two brothers, Wilmer Grandfield of Barre, Eugene Grandfield and his wife, Judy of Moretown; as well as many nieces and nephews. Margaret was predeceased by three sisters, Catherine Robtoy, Betty Fleury and Sandra Jones; and three brothers, Meridan Grandfield Jr., Norman Grandfield, and Richard Grandfield.

Funeral services will be held from the Moretown United Methodist Church on Thursday, December 2, at 10 a.m. There will be no calling hours. Entombment will take place in Hope cemetery Vault in Waterbury pending spring interment in Mountain View cemetery in Moretown. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts would be appreciated to the American Diabetes Association, 77 Hegeman Avenue, Colchester, VT 05446, or to the American Heart Association, New England Affiliate, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701-4688. Raymond Hollis Sabin Sr.

December 2, 2004

Raymond Hollis Sabin Sr., 83, of Waterbury passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Monday, November 22, 2004.

Born in Waterbury on June 11, 1021, he was the son of the late Dr. Henry W. and Tenie R. (Fisher) Sabin. On May 24, 1949, he married the former Clara B. Hardy in Newport R.I. Mrs. Sabin passed away on February 2, 2000.

Raymond was a 1941 graduate of Waterbury High School. Joining the U.S. Navy on August 11, 1942, Raymond had a distinguished career that spanned WWII, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, retiring in 1968 following 26 years of service.

Following his discharge, Raymond worked as a medical assistant for Mary Fletcher Hospital in Burlington, from which he retired in 1991.

Raymond's leisure time was spent vegetable and flower gardening, going for walks and spending time with his active and loving family. Ever the social creature, Raymond was well known in his early years as a wonderful dancer. His memberships included the Wesley United Methodist Church and the Winooski Lodge #49, F&AM, both of Waterbury.

Raymond is survived by his children, Mary R. Brown and her companion Howard Guyette of Fairfax, Barbara R. Sabin of Milton, Robert A. Sabin of Burlington and Ronald N. Sabin and his wife Charline of Mesa, Arizona; seven grandchildren, Edward Brown, Stephen Brown, Adam Sabin, Ethan Sabin, Emily Sabin, Samantha Desjardins and Rebecca Desjardins; two great-grandchildren, Brittany Duquette and Kyle Brown; his brother, Kenneth E. Sabin and his wife, Lois of Waterbury; his cousins, Barbara Gates, David Fisher and Janice Raymond; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Raymond H. Sabin Jr.; two brothers, Richard Sabin and James Sabin; and a grandson, Kevin Brown.

Sumner H. "Stowey" Stowe

December 2, 2004

Sumner H. "Stowey" Stowe, 63, of Granville, died late Friday night, November 26, 2004 at his home.

He was born June 2, 1941 in Bridgeport, CT; the son of Harvey and Marjorie (Hall) Stowe. He was raised and schooled in Trumbull, CT and was married to Betsy MacDonald in Stratford, CT on September 24, 1960. Stowey had lived in Shelton, CT from 1961 until moving to Granville in 1989.

He was past owner of the Sportsmen's Den in Bridgeport. He was manager of The Fly Rod Shop in Stowe and had worked for Halloran Hardware in Waitsfield and Waterbury. Past president of the Lamoille River Anglers Association, Stowey loved fly fishing and was a lifetime member of the NRA.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy Stowe of Granville; daughters, Faith Argraves and her husband Mark of Shelton, CT and Wendi Roy of Milford, CT; brother, Harvey Stowe of Shelton, CT; grandchildren, Melissa and Anthony Argraves.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 4, at the Community Church of Hancock-Granville in Hancock with the Reverend Wayne Holsman officiating. There are no calling hours. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Cancer Center at University of Vermont, 111 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, VT 05401.

Arrangements are by the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
