Ries, Clyde Tuesday, 03 Apr 2007
Clyde A. Ries, of Port Orchard, died on April 3, 2007, in Bremerton.
He was 93.
He was born on Feb. 23, 1914, in Lyman to Albert P. Eathel (Shellhammer) Ries.
He married Jean H. Lundberg on Mount Vernon.
He graduated from Hamilton High School and from Western Washington University and the University of Washington.
He served as a sonarman on a submarine chaser in the U.S. Navy. He later worked as a meat inspector for the U.S. Department of Agriculture and as a math teacher.
He was a member of Elim Lutheran Church in Port Orchard; National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He enjoyed gardening and bowling and following sports, especially the Seattle Mariners.
He is survived by son Richard Ries of Kelzer, Ore.; daughter Diana Picknell of Dallas, Texas; and sister Violet (and husband John) Walton of Anacortes.
He was preceded in death by sisters Emma and Inda.
A funeral was held on April 6 at Elim Lutheran Church, followed by burial at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard.
Remembrances can be made to Elim Lutheran Church.

Hatlestad, Carl Sunday, 01 Apr 2007
Carl Hatlestad, of Port Orchard, died on April 1, 2007.
He was 73.
He was born on July 11, 1933, in Velva, N.D.
He joined the U.S. Army in 1953 and, following his discharge, graduated from Northwest University in Boise, Idaho, in 1959, with a degree in education.
He worked in various teaching positions in Idaho before settling in Port Orchard, where he taught special needs children for 31 years.
He enjoyed working as a volunteer at Port Orchard Care Center and various ministries at the Port Orchard Church of the Nazarene.
He enjoyed reading and writing letters to the editor of the newspaper.
He is survived by wife Billie Hatlestad, of Port Orchard; son Don (and wife Beth) Hatlestad, of Port Orchard; daughter Kelli (and husband Timber) Stevens, of Nampa, Idaho; and three grandchildren.
An informal memorial gathering was held at the home of Billie Hatlestad on April 7.
Remembrances can be made to First Lutheran Church, 2483 Mitchell Road SE, Port Orchard, WA 98366.

Epling, Peggy Saturday, 31 Mar 2007
Aileen Marguerite “Peggy” Bellinger-Gulberg-Epling, of Olalla, died on March 31, 2007, at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton.
She was 81.
She was born on Aug. 22, 1925, in Long Beach, Calif.
In Los Angeles, she worked as a waitress at the La Palma Chicken Pie Shop for 30 years.
She enjoyed square dancing and was a volunteer at her daughter’s school in Olalla for 15 years.
She is survived by husband, Bill Epling, of Olalla; daughter Sunny (and husband Jerry) Willson of South Colby; sons Larry (and wife Debi) Gulberg of Mukilteo, and Tim of Port Orchard; and nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son Bob Gulberg in 1980.
A memorial service will be held at Lewis Funeral Chapel in Bremerton on April 10 at 1 p.m. This will be followed by a graveside at Miller-Woodlawn. Visitors may pay their respects on Saturday and Monday at Lewis funeral chapel.

Vail, John Friday, 30 Mar 2007
John Thomas Vail, of Port Orchard, died on March 30, 2007, in Bremerton.
He was 61.
He was born on March 16, 1946, in Alamogordo, N.M., to Hilton and Hazel (Boyd) Vail.
He married Luanne Peters on April 5, 1986, in Moses Lake.
He graduated from Pacific High School in San Bernadino, Calif., in 1964 and earned an accounting degree from Central Washington University in 1993.
He was a self-employed accountant.
He was a pastor with the Church of God in California and Kitsap County.
He served on the Kitsap Foster Care Board.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and watching the Seattle Mariners.
He is survived by wife Luanne Vail, of Port Orchard; mother Hazel Vail, of Victorville, Calif.; son Michael Vail, of Port Orchard; daughters LaVonne (and husband Randy) Cooper, of Silverdale, Kimberly (and husband Jon) Adams, of San Bernadino, Calif., and Elisabeth Vail of Port Orchard; brothers Hilton (and wife Lenda) Vail, of El Cajon, Calif., and Joe (and wife Paula) Vail, of Victorville, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on April 3 the Christian Life Center in Port Orchard.

Goss, John Friday, 23 Mar 2007
John William Goss, of Port Orchard, died on March 23, 2007, at home.
He was 86.
He was born on Nov. 15, 1920, in Browning, Mont., to Abbott and Margaret Goss.
He was raised in and graduated from high school in Browning and was drafted into the Army, where he served during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He settled into Kitsap County with his parents upon his discharge from the service and met and married his wife of 48 years, Wilma, who preceded him in death.
He worked as a bookkeeper for Pacific Car and Foundry and was a member of Painter’s Local 1982 in Renton, where he retired.
He was heavily involved in the Renton Democratic Party.
He developed and implemented the Seattle/King County plan that assisted minority prisoners prepare their transition from prison life to life as a union trade member.
He is survived by sons Dennis (and wife Thea) Goss, of Port Orchard, Jay (and wife Joy) Goss, of Mount Vernon, daughters Susan Goss of Olympia, June Schndebly (Goss) of Ellensburg, and Beth Ehlers of Renton; and 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on March 29 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Renton, at 1 p.m.

Dobbins, Vicky Thursday, 22 Mar 2007
Victoria “Vicky” Dobbins, of Port Orchard, died on March 22, 2007, at home.
She was 94.
She was born on June 5, 1912, in Sequim, to Otto J. and Camilla (Pedersen) Sporseen.
She graduated from Sequim High School in 1930 and married Nathaniel (Pete) Dobbins on April 30, 1938 in Seattle.
He preceded her in death in 1995.
She and her husband owned Dobbins Lumber near Bellevue from 1950 to 1980, when they retired.
After selling the lumber com-pany, she worked for McDonald’s.
She enjoyed gardening, horses and animals of all kinds.
She was a volunteer at Children’s Hospital in Seattle.
She is survived by daughter Diane Roe of McKenna and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by brothers Otto, Carl A., Stanley, Dagny, and Solomon; and sister Ruth.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
Remembrances can be made to Children's Hospital, 4800 Sand Point Way NE, Seattle, WA 98105.

Reid, Shawn Wednesday, 21 Mar 2007
Shawn Reid, 34, of Anchorage, Alaska, died on March 21, 2007, in Anchorage.
He was 34.
He was born on Jan. 28, 1973, in Hawaii, and raised in Washington.
He moved to Alaska in 2006 and settled in Anchorage.
He spent the past several years serving his church through youth and media-sound ministry.
He is survived by his parents, Karl and Donna Reid of Port Orchard; sisters Dawnelle Nordgren and Kara Lester; and brother Derek Reid.
A memorial service for Shawn will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Harper Evangelical Free Church in Port Orchard.

Server, Jack Tuesday, 13 Mar 2007
Jack DeLorn Server, of Port Orchard, died on March 13, 2007, at Veterans Hospital in Seattle. He was 61.
He was born on March 9, 1946, in Bremerton to Ray and Ruth Server.
He was raised in Port Orchard and went to South Kitsap schools.
He drove a truck and worked at Morrison Gravel.
He enjoyed riding his motorcycle and fishing.
He is survived by son Joe Server of Bellingham; daughter Elizabeth (and husband Terry) Johnson; and two grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no funeral.
There will be celebration of life from 1 to 4 p.m. on April 7 at Bethel Tavern in Port Orchard.
