Cunningham, Cynthia Tuesday, 31 Oct 2006
Cynthia P. Cunningham, of Port Orchard, died on Oct. 31, 2006, at home. She was 90.
She was born on Aug. 26, 1916, in Canton, Wisc., to Chester and Daisy (Presude) Nelson.
She was a homemaker and operator of Long Lake Grocery Store for many years.
She also worked as an evergreen packer for 25 years.
She was a member of the Long Lake Flower Club and enjoyed dancing. At age 70 she joined the Polar Bear Club of Olalla.
She is survived by stepson Henry Cunningham; daughter Victory (and husband Gene) Fitch of Port Orchard; and four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
A graveside service was held on Oct. 3 at Sunset Lane Memorial Park in Port Orchard.
Remembrances can be made to the Kitsap Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.

Collins, Michael Thursday, 26 Oct 2006
Michael Collins, of Port Orchard, died on Oct. 26, 2006, in Bremerton. He was 56.
He was born on July 29, 1950, in Seattle to Maurice Collins and Barbara (Martin) Collins. He graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1968.
He was an entrepreneur who owned restaurant, construction and refrigeration businesses.
He enjoyed boating and classic cars.
He is survived by daughters Dawn Collins and Renee (and husband David) Johnson; son David Collins; brother Jay (and wife June) Hoover; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on Nov. 4 at Harper Evangelical Free Church in Port Orchard.
Roos, Alex Saturday, 21 Oct 2006
Alex Roos, a former Port Orchard City Councilman, died on Oct. 21, 2006. He was 79.
A memorial service is scheduled for Nov. 5 at 4 p.m. at the Givens Activity Center, 1025 Tacoma Ave., in Port Orchard.

Aldana, Maria Thursday, 26 Oct 2006
Maria Maydin Aldana, of Port Orchard, died on Oct. 26, 2006, in Bremerton.
She was 92.
She was born on April 9, 1914, in Manila, Philippines, to Angel and Aurea (Aquino) Maydin.
She married Francisco Aldana on Jan. 10, 1964, in Baguio City, Philippines.
She attended school in Manila and was a homemaker.
She is survived by sons Ross (and wife Lanie) Aldana of Port Orchard, and Chris Aldana of Black Diamond; daughter Salva Aldana, of Black Diamond; brother Manny (and wife Clarita) Miraflor, of Black Diamond; sisters Connie Cruz, of Chino, Calif., and Dading Posadas, of Manila, Philippines; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by sisters Jacinta Abad and Maria Mina and brother Totoy Miraflor.
A memorial service was held at Rill Life Tribute Center on Oct. 31, followed by inurnment at Sunset Lane cemetery.

Ramsey, Sandra Monday, 23 Oct 2006
Sandra L. Ramsey, of Tacoma, died on Oct. 23, 2006, at home.
She was 62.
She was born on March 22, 1944, in Bremerton to Leonard and Evelyn (Mutchler) Schmitz.
She married Michael Ramsey in Port Orchard in 1962.
She graduated from South Kitsap High School in 1962 and worked as a librarian’s assistant at the Bethel School District in Spanaway for 26 years until her retirement in 2006.
She also worked as a seamstress.
She was a Catholic and she enjoyed sewing.
She is survived by sons Jeffrey (and wife Teresa) Ramsey of Eatonville, and Mark (and Jaime) Ramsey; brothers Ted (and wife Sandy) Schmitz of Port Orchard, and James (and wife Gertie) of Lakeland, Fla.; sisters Nancy (and husband Dick) Heembrock of Port Orchard, and Darlene Meier of Port Orchard; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by husband Michael Ramsey in 1993.
A celebration of life is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Oct. 28 at Rill Life Tribute Center.

Powell, Alanson Tuesday, 17 Oct 2006
Alanson Towne Powell died on Oct. 17 at Panorama Convalescent Center.
He was 88.
He was born on March 1, 1918 in Missoula, Mont., to Francis F. and Mildred (Towne) Powell.
He was raised in Seattle, attended Whitman College, and graduated from the University of Washington in 1945 with a major in economics and a minor in Education. He obtained a masters’ degree in School Business Administration from San Francisco State University in 1966.
After employment as a high school teacher and principal, he served in the office of State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Olympia. In 1954, he became school district business manager in Bellevue. He occupied the same position for Peralta Junior College District in Oakland, Calif., from 1968 until his retirement in 1977.
He enjoyed hiking, boating on the Puget Sound, and summers on the beach at South Colby.
He served on boards for Camp Fire Girls, Kitsap County Mental Health and Work Release, Colby United Methodist Church, and Port Orchard’s and Lacey’s Senior Kiwanis. With others, he founded Yukon Harbor Concerned Citizens’ Group to oppose organization of fish farms along South Kitsap beaches.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Marbeth Sedgwick Powell; and daughters Francia (and husband David J.) Reynolds of Lacey, Betsy (and husband Michael) Pierce of Sedro Woolley, Alane (and husband Duncan) Howard of Loveland, Colo., and Dana (and husband Mark) Mills-Powell of Cambridge, England; and eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held on Oct. 20 at First United Methodist Church in Olympia.

Harris, Duncan Tuesday, 22 May 2007
Duncan Howard Harris, died at home on May 22, 2007.
He was 51.
His many hobbies included poetry writing, photography, inventions, mountaineering, search and rescue, downhill skiing, bicycling, arborist pruning and ballroom dance teaching, and a special appreciation of cats.
Most recently, he had created an on-line business for supplying press parts to the printing industry — a complement to his primary business of servicing printing presses.
He is survived by his wife, Tina Harris; step-children Jenny Beran, and Eric and Jonathon Prange; sisters Ann Baldwin and Jill, Irene and Loren Harris; and his father and step-mother Greg and Linda Harris.
A celebration of his life will be held July 1 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall (290 McLeay Road in Sequim), with potluck dinner and dancing.

Daniels, Betty Monday, 21 May 2007
Betty Carroll Daniels, a Manchester resident, died on May 21, 2007.
She was 82.
She was born on Feb. 24, 1925, in Sutton, Neb., to Gerald and Hazel (Catterson) Carroll.
She moved to South Colby in 1934 with her mother and twin brother, Jerry Carroll, graduating from high school in Sisters, Oregon where her mother taught school.
She moved to Manchester in 1943, and attended the University of Washington.
She married Joseph Daniels on March 6, 1948, at the Port Orchard Methodist Church. They made their first home in Manchester, where she stayed the rest of her life.
She enjoyed flower arranging, ceramics, cake decorating and her many pets. She was involved with the Camp Fire Girls, South Colby PTA and was the treasurer of the Manchester Community Church for years.
She was preceded in death by her brother Jerry and her husband Joseph.
She is survived by her daughters, Jerre Lynee Daniels Hall and Kimberly Kay Marchel, and three grandchildren.
Services will be held at 4 p.m. May 24 at Sunset Lane Memorial Park. Remembrances can be made to the Kitsap Humane Society.
Arrangements were made by Rill Life Tribute center.

Kaplan, Edward Thursday, 17 May 2007
Edward F. Kaplan, of Port Orchard, died on May 17, 2007.
He was 61.
After his retirement from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in in May 2006, he enjoyed his music and watching sports.
He is survived by his wife Judy Kaplan, of Port Orchard; mother Betty Kaplan and brother Harvey of Miami, Fla.; stepdaughter Jenni (Kaplan) Dean; adopted daughter Amanda, of Tacoma; and two grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Rill Life Tribute Center in Port Orchard on May 25.
Remembrances can be made to the Ed Kaplan Fund at any Washington Mutual Bank branch.

Clifton, William Tuesday, 15 May 2007
William H. Clifton of Port Orchard died on May 15, 2007.
He was 78.
He was born on May 4, 1929, to William Harry Clifton and Doris Marion LaVine in Steubenville, Ohio.
He went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps during World War II.
He married Stella Bush on Feb. 22, 1951.
He worked for the Kitsap County Sheriff’s Office for 28 years, retiring as Chief of Detectives.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, softball, refereeing and golfing.
He is survived by brothers Dan (Shirley) Clifton, Harold (Bev) Clifton, both of Buffalo, Minn.; sisters Rena (Lloyd) Westphal of Buffalo and Dolly Boyd of California; daughters, Cam (Doug) Green of Port Orchard, Bill (Mike) Middleton of Port Orchard; son, Mike (Josie) Clifton; stepson, Scott Tetz of Port Orchard; stepdaughter, Lori O’Leary of Port Orchard; six grandchildren and one great-grandson.
A gathering of family and friends was held May 20. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Kitsap School District athletics program in care of Marsha Wintzel.
Funeral arrangements were handled by the Linde Family Funeral Service of Bremerton.
