Helen Hardy

Helen V. Hardy, 69, of Bradenton, Florida, passed away on Dec. 22, 2007 after a long battle with lung cancer.

Helen was born in Leavenworth, the daughter of Daniel and Evelyn (Poole) Vaughn.

She graduated from Colville High School - class of 1956.

She was involved for many years with Jobs Daughters and worked with Meals on Wheels.

Helen moved to Tallahassee in 1957 and relocated to Bradenton in 1960. She was Episcopalian.

Helen was preceded in death by two brothers, Donald and John.

Helen is survived by two sons, Paul Hardy, Bradenton, Florida; Daniel Hardy, Bradenton; two brothers, Dale Vaughn, Colville; Carl Vaughn, Colville; one sister, Shirley (Vaughn) Smith, Jacksonville, Alabama; and nine grandchildren.

The family is requesting no flowers, and that donations be made in her name to Tide Well Hospice and Palliative Care, Development Department, 5955 Rand Boulevard, Sarasota, FL 34238.

Services will be held at a later date in Colville.

Mary E. Carefoot-Akers

Mary E. Carefoot-Akers, who passed away on Friday, December 14, 2007, was born to John and Mildred Carefoot on March 5, 1939 in Chewelah.

She has 13 brothers and sisters, many who she never knew due to being adopted out or put in foster homes.

Mary lived in Western Washington, where she met and married her husband, Roger.

Together they owned and operated a mink farm until retiring in the early 90’s.

The couple moved to Chewelah and started M&R Custom Meats.

Mary was preceded in death by husband Roger and is survived by her daughter, Denise, her husband Gregg and two grandchildren, Alan and Heather.

She also has one brother-in-law, Neil, and one sister in-law, Patty, and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at Summit Valley Community Church on Jan. 12 at 2 p.m.

Lunch will follow the service.

Arthur Barnes

Arthur Bradford Barnes, 84 of Colville, passed away at Sacred Heart Hospital in Spokane on Dec. 12, 2007.

He had resided in Colville for the past seven years, having moved there from Carver, MA.

He was a former resident of Holbrook and Braintree, MA.

Arthur was born in Weymouth, MA and graduated from the Weymouth Technical Vocational High School.

He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Armstrong World Industries.

Arthur enjoyed being a handyman, able to perform all sorts of repairs.

He was also an expert woodworker.

He enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, Germany and other areas.

During WW II, he served with the U.S. Army in Germany.

While living in Carver, he was a member of the Plymouth Rock Bible Church.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara A. (Paine) Barnes of Colville.

He was the husband of the late Eleanor M. (Yukob) Barnes, who died in 1985.

He is survived by a beloved son, Arthur B. Barnes, Jr. Retired Lieutenant of the Quincy Fire Dept. who resides in Hanover, MA, and a devoted daughter, Patricia E. Duncan-Barnes, Berkley, MA; who is employed by Verizon at Providence, RI.

He is also survived by two sisters, Frances Gardner of Haverhill Groton, MA and Dorothy Halgren of Brooksville, FL.

He was the brother of the late Thornton, Allen Alton; Bertram and Norman Barnes.

Arthur is also survived by five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2000 E. Hawthorne Avenue, Colville, on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 2 p.m.

Patricia Shuey

Patricia Marie (Lane) Shuey of Rathdrum, Idaho passed away at her home on Dec. 31, 2007. She was 48.

Pat was born on April 7, 1959 in Colville, to Ralph and Leona (Deubel) Lane of Colville.

Pat is survived by her husband John; son Steve Sphuler and his wife Carey; their daughters, Chelsea, Kylie, and Maegan; son Jeremy Sphuler; his girlfriend Stacey, and their son, Jackson.

She is also survived by her mother, Leona Lane; brothers Tony Lane, Ralph Lane Jr. and Ralph’s wife, Diana, all of Colville; sisters, Chris Rinard and husband Larry of Cocalalla, ID; Myra Skidmore and husband Lance of Port Orchard.

She will be greatly missed by her nieces Jennifer, Tiffany, Jessica, Rebecca, Kirsten, Katie, Krista, Shira; and nephew, Brady.

Pat’s family and extended family were the most important things in her life.

She had an extra special place in her heart for her granddaughters, McKenna and Leah.

Pat trained to become an EMT, and later an Advanced EMT, serving the Rathdrum and Post Falls, Idaho communities.

Being an EMT was something she was extremely proud of and thoroughly enjoyed.

There were many hobbies and activities Pat loved to do such as photography, scrapbooking, spending time with friends, beach-going with her dogs, camping, and life in general.

In Pat’s too-short life, she affected everyone she met with the same energy and passion for life that she possessed, despite the many years she spent battling a debilitating, chronic illness.

A memorial service for Pat was held Jan. 5 at Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.

In memory of Pat, contributions may be made to the animal shelter or rescue group of your choice.

Gail Lyng

Gail Lynn Lyng, a long-time resident of Colville, passed away on Jan. 2, 2008 in Colville at the age of 52.

Gail was born on Dec. 22, 1955 in Spokane, the daughter of Roy Clarence and Maxine K. (Huguenin) Sailor.

Gail moved to Colville when she was just months old (with her family) following the death of her father.

She was raised in Colville and attended school in Colville.

Gail married and had two daughters, Tonya and Sonya Yost.

Gail worked in the home and cared for the needs of her young family.

She later married Joe Lyng and together they had a son, Sean.

The family moved to Kent in 1987 where Gail worked at the neighborhood grocery store.

Gail returned to Colville with her children in 1990 and moved in with her mother Maxine Parrott.

Gail worked at the Branding Iron in Colville for a time.

In 2004, she began her three-year battle with breast cancer.

Gail enjoyed socializing with family and friends.

She also had a wonderful sense of humor, selfless dedication to help others and a steadfast determination.

Gail also enjoyed a game of shuffleboard and solitaire.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sonya Yost in 1981; a sister, Ellen in 2006, and by a brother, Clarence Sailor, in 1998.

Gail is survived by her son, Sean Lyng and his wife, Stephanie, Spokane; a daughter, Tonya Slate, Tucsan, NM; her mother, Maxine Parrott, Colville; her brother, Roger Sailor and his wife, Anita, Colville; her sisters, Lola LaDaw and her husband, Monte, Kennewick; Debbie Doppenburg, Spokane; Lorie Green, Spokane; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and extended family; and by one grand daughter.

A memorial service will be held at the Free Methodist Church in Colville.

Memorial contributions can be given to any organization working in breast cancer research.

Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

George Sparks

George H. Sparks, a 27-year resident of the Kettle Falls and Rice area, passed away Dec. 12, 2007, at his home near Kettle Falls at the age of 53.

He was born on April 12, 1954 in Cheney, the son of George and Helene Sparks.

George grew up and attended school in Hood River, Oregon.

After a short time in the Army, he moved to the Portland area working as a carpenter in the construction industry for eight years.

In 1980 he moved to Rice and worked for 10 years for the Plum Creek Lumber mill.

He was self-employed in more recent years working as a carpenter, cabinetmaker and landscaper.

George’s hobbies included fishing, boating and most outdoor activities.

George is survived by his wife, Cheryl Sparks, at the family home; his daughter, Crystal Sparks, Colville; his mother, Helene Sparks, Sherwood, OR; three sisters, Monica Young, Punxsutawney, PA; Joanne Sparks, The Dalles, OR; Georgine Merz, Carlton, OR; and two grandchildren.

At his request, no funeral service was held for Mr. Sparks.

The Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of arrangements.

Tammy L. Carr

Tammy Lynn Carr, a longtime resident of the Chewelah area, passed away on Feb. 5 in Chewelah at the age of 39.

She was born on Jan. 12, 1969 in Chewelah to Jerry and Bertha (Farnsworth) Carr.

Tammy was born as the first baby of the year at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chewelah after the New Year in 1969.

She grew up in the Springdale and Valley area, and graduated from Springdale (Mary Walker) High School in 1987.

After high school, she worked at a credit union and in construction for a few years.

In 1999 she began her career with the City of Chewelah as the Deputy Accounts Receivable Clerk.

Tammy was very athletic and played on the varsity softball, basketball and volleyball teams in high school.

She loved spending time outdoors, whether fishing with JR or searching for huckleberries and mushrooms.

Tammy was very generous and caring for others, and loved to bake and make gift baskets for others.

Her generous nature was evident at Christmas, as her face lit up when somebody opened a gift she gave.

Tammy was always smiling and taking care of others.

She was inspirational to people, and her compassion was a model to all who knew and loved her.

Tammy never met an enemy, and her loving nature will be treasured by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her son, Aaron Pettigrew (Lindsey), Chewelah; a daughter, Ashley Pettigrew, Chewelah; her mother, Bertha Matteson (Jerry), Northport; her father, Jerry Carr (Maudie), Valley; her grandson, Tyler Pettigrew, Chewelah; her brothers, David Carr (Theresa), Valley; Clayton Farnsworth, Chewelah.

The memorial service for Tammy Carr will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Chewelah Civic Center.

Memorial contributions may be given to Maudie Carr, 3615 Waitts Lake Road, Valley, WA 99181.
