Ray Shurr

Raymond H. Shurr, age 91, Colville (formerly of Renton and Minot, North Dakota) passed away on Feb. 4 at Mount Carmel Hospital in Colville.

Ray was born on Nov. 24, 1916 on the family farm near Glenburn, North Dakota, the son of Frederick and Helen Shurr.

He graduated from Glenburn High School and John Deer Tractor School.

He drove truck and combines during harvest and worked in a flour mill for 16 years.

He had many skills, including blueprint reading, tool grinding, welding and working in the machine shop.

In 1967, he moved to Renton where he worked for Boeing and helped build the tapered section of the Minute Man missile.

In his leisure time, he enjoyed gardening, flowers and vegetables, woodworking, lathe work, welding, and sharpening tools and lawnmower blades for his friends and neighbors.

In 2000, he moved to Colville to be near his daughter, and in 2005, he moved into Parkview Assisted Living in Colville.

Survivors include two sons, Michael Shurr, Gig Harbor; Melvin Barsness, Olympia and Yuma, AZ; daughter Judith Davison, Colville; and daughter Gloria Summers, Renton; four sisters, Hazel O’Connell, Rugby, ND; Agnes Shurr, Grand Forks, ND; Harriet Shurr, Fargo, ND; and Mary Jane Gall, Orono, Maine; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Rollman Barsness.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 at Flintofts Issaquah Funeral Home, 540 E. Sunset Way, Issaquah.

A visitation for family and friends will precede the service from 9 to 11 a.m.

Private burial will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton next to his second wife, Mildred Shurr, who passed away in 1998.

Jennie Annetta Yates passed away on Feb. 3 in Colville at the age of 88.

She was the third of nine children born to Aaron and Mary Wilson on Oct. 21, 1919 in Burley, Idaho.

She spent an arduous and active childhood in Idaho and Utah.

At the age of 18, she finished her education and began work as a housekeeper and professional seamstress.

Jennie met her husband, Raymond R. Yates, when she moved to Holden.

Together they raised four daughters: Marla, Lareesa, Cherryl and Marna.

They moved to Lakeview OR, for a brief period and then found their way back to Washington where Ray found a job with the mine in Republic.

They called Republic home for 31 years and were very active in the community.

After Ray’s death, she moved to Colville and has called it home for the past 16 years.

Jennie spent her life involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

She taught Sunday School, ran the Relief Society and played an intricate role in establishing the LDS branch in Republic.

She was known for her bountiful gardens, her talent as a seamstress, and her ability to care for others.

She was loyal, practical, frugal and generous.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Yates; daughter Marla Jean and her siblings, Marion, Beth, Neva, Wanda, and Ruth.

She is survived by her siblings, Lucile Myers, George Wilson and Gary Wilson; three daughters, Lareesa Heideman Ward (Ed), Cherryl Wood (Dennis), Marna Yates Ericson (Eric); nine grandchildren, Alan (Debbie), Kara (Shane) Jana (Jim), Nicholas, Jamie (Steve), Chris, Ben, Kelly and Joe; nine great grandchildren, Staci, Korri, Leah, Rachel, Erik, Bailey, Shanee, Josh, Robin, Lauren, Owen and Sophia; one great-great-grandson, Cohen.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 14 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Colville.

A graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at the Republic cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to the 'Jennie Yates Wish Fund' in care of Cherryl Wood at Bank of America.

Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is in charge of the arrangements.

Bessie Bowe

Bessie Annalee Bowe, a lifetime resident of the Summit Valley area (near Addy), passed away on Feb. 6 in Chewelah at the age of 90.

She was born on June 14, 1917, the daughter of John Oscar and Sophia Jane (Graham) Alby.

John Alby was the last of the Summit Valley homesteaders, claiming his property on the summit of the Addy-Gifford Road.

This is where Bessie and her sister Bertha spent their growing up years.

Bessie often reflected about her childhood chores and how much she enjoyed carrying water from the well to the house, hoeing in the garden and helping her mother with household duties.

She attended school at the Summit Valley School and graduated from Chewelah High School in 1936.

On June 14, 1937, she married Howard Bowe and moved to the farm seven miles west of Addy.

There they raised five children.

Howard preceded her in death on March 17, 2000.

Bessie remained at the family home until her battle with dementia required greater attention.

In 2005, Bessie moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, Gary and Dolores Crisp, and later made her final home at St. Joseph’s Long Term Care in Chewelah.

Bessie’s life was defined by her faith, family, friendships, and her home.

She very faithfully supported and attended the Summit Valley Community Church her whole life.

Bessie’s Sunday afternoon dinners drew in ministers, missionaries, family and friends.

She gave of herself that which she had - love, food and her time.

Bessie’s home was immaculate and she immensely enjoyed working in her yard and flowers.

Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart and she always had time for them.

She was truly a wonderful wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and friend that were loved by all.

Bessie was preceded in death by her husband, Howard Bowe; her parents, John and Sophia Alby, and an infant baby boy.

Bessie is survived by her sons, Donald Bowe and his wife, Mavis of Addy; Delbert Bowe and his wife, Linda of Libby, MT; Daniel Bowe of Addy; Dennis Bowe and his wife, Irene of Colville; a daughter, Dolores Crisp and her husband, Gary of Addy; a sister, Bertha Pry of Spokane; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

The memorial service for Mrs. Bessie A. Bowe will be held at 1 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 13 at the Summit Valley Community Church near Addy.

The committal will precede the memorial service at the Summit Valley cemetery.

Memorial contributions can be given to the Summit Valley Community Church, 2305 Summit Valley Road, Addy, WA 99101.

Laura Harders

Laura A. Harders, a resident of Colville, passed away on Feb. 8 in Colville at the age of 96.

She was born on Aug. 13, 1911 in Colville, the daughter of Ludwig P. and Mary (Lund) Johnson.

Laura was raised in Colville where she also attended grade school.

She moved with her family to Spokane and graduated from West Valley High School in 1928.

Laura then went to work for the Spokesman-Review.

She married Kenneth B. Harders in April of 1933 and in 1934 they were blessed with twin girls.

They later rented a farm in Renton and worked there during the Depression.

The family moved to Roseburg, OR in 1940 and Laura worked as a secretary for one of the local banks.

Kenneth then got a job at the shipyards in Washington and the family returned to Renton.

Laura worked as a secretary in the War Assets division for the Department of Defense.

She was a very efficient secretary and was soon working as an executive secretary for VanWaters & Rogers.

She retired after 20 years with VanWaters & Rogers.

Kenneth preceded Laura in death in the early 1980’s.

Laura remained in their home for several years before moving into a retirement center.

In 2004 Laura returned to Colville to stay with her daughter before moving into the care of Valley View Family Home.

Laura was an adventurer all of her life from the bi-wing airplane rides out of her grandfather’s field to the helicopter hiking trip when she was in her 80’s.

She loved to travel and saw the U.S. border to border via Highway 395 and all of the scenic routes.

She read two books a day and was an avid bridge player.

Her love of people and staying in contact with everyone was very important to her.

Laura lived a full 96 years and carried her quick wit, sense of humor, story and joke telling abilities and her fun, love for life to the end.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, and by a daughter, Marilyn 'Jean' Scribner.

Laura is survived by her daughter, Joan Anderson, Colville; a sister, Margaret Latham, Spokane; five grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews; and three great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Laura Harders will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 16 at the Grace Evangelical Free Church in Colville.

A graveside service will follow at the Mountain View Park cemetery in Colville.

Pastor Tim Goble will officiate.

Memorial contributions may be given to Habitat for Humanity.

Allen Peone

Wednesday, 13 February 2008

Allen G. Peone entered into rest on Feb. 3 at his home in Mead.

He was born Jan. 30, 1928 in Paulson, MT.

Mr. Peone was a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes and VFW Post No. 1474 in Hillyard.

He worked as a lineman for Washington Water Power.

Mr. Peone loved the outdoors, hunting, camping, skiing, and spending time on the water in his boat.

Allen was a golfer and rode horses bareback in rodeos.

He is survived by his sister, Joyce Moreland; his sons, Gary (Joyce) Peone, Steve Peone and Chris Peone, along with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

No funeral service will be held, per Allen’s wishes.
