Norma Augusta Slate
April 15, 1921 - October 2, 2010
Our Mom was warm, generous, loving and always had room in her heart and home for one more person, or one more animal.
She was the Glue that kept our family together during the years, frequently calling all five children to keep us updated on what the others were doing, or just to say Hi.
Mom was a survivor, facing and overcoming all types of setbacks during her life. She remained sharp minded and independent until the end.
Her younger years were very busy with working outside the home and raising the family. The family especially remembers the large home cooked meals with frequently an extra guest or two at the table. She welcomed all into her home.
Mom was blessed to share thirty-nine wonderful years with husband Leon Slate. They enjoyed their retirement years at home on Sand Creek Road. They described these years as living in a wonderful place with many friends. All of us five brothers and sisters, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren would come to visit and enjoy great family times.
When the grandchildren were asked how do you remember Grandma; The answer was; very nice, kind, understanding and supportive.
Sister Gladys said 'I always thought my Mom was the prettiest woman on the block'.
Mom was always there to support us, and is special and will be forever missed.

Eva Maxine Rainer, 79, was called home to Jesus Christ on September 29, 2010 in Spokane, Washington following a brief illness. Eva was born November 2, 1930 in LaMarr, Colorado to Elmer and Neva McClain.
She was raised in Colville and Chewelah, Washington graduating from Chewelah Jenkins High School in 1948. Eva married the love of her life, Rudy Rainer in August of 1948 and thus began their journey together that would last 59 ½ years.
They moved to Moscow, Idaho in 1959 where Eva began her 21 year career with GTE Northwest Telephone Company. During her years with GTE she accomplished one of her most memorable achievements, becoming the first woman manager of an all male work force in the GTE system. That was a big deal in 1970!
As a mother, Eva was as good as they get. Their home was the gathering place for all of her children’s friends. She always welcomed any and all to their home.
Eva retired from GTE in 1986, and her and Rudy returned to Chewelah to enjoy family and friends in their retirement years. Eva loved to garden and spend time on their deck watching the hummingbirds feed on her many elaborate feeders. The Chewelah Casino was also another favorite of Eva’s. It was a place to socialize and if she won a little, that was nice too. Eva and Rudy spent many winters traveling to Wenden, Arizona to ‘snow bird’ with their daughter Kristy and her husband Steve Lott.
In 2008, Eva was dealt the double tragedy of losing both her husband Rudy in January and her daughter Theresa Hazeltine in September. After the passing of her beloved husband, Eva moved to Spokane that same year where she resided until the time of her passing.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband Rudy of 59 ½ years, her daughter Theresa, her parents, Elmer and Neva McClain, and a brother Madison. She is survived by her daughter Kristy Lott and her husband Steve of Wenden, Arizona; three sons, Jay Rainer and his wife Patty of Coeur d’Alene, ID, Jim Rainer and his wife Carole of Sandpoint, ID, and Paul Rainer and his wife Jeri of Moscow, ID; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at the St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church in Chewelah with Father Vincent Van Dao Nguyen officiating. Burial will follow the Mass at the St. Mary’s cemetery in Chewelah, Washington. Memorial contributions may be given to the Shriner’s Hospital. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory has been entrusted with the arrangements.
