Elmer Paul Day
November 27, 1950 - August 30, 2010
Elmer Paul Day, a lifetime resident of Colville, WA passed away at the age of 59, on Aug. 30, 2010 after a yearlong battle with leukemia. Elmer was born in Colville, WA the son of John P and Elsie E. (Barton) Day.
He attended school in Colville and was a twelve year graduate from Colville High School in 1969. Elmer continued his education at the Spokane Community College and received his Associates degree as a diesel mechanic. He then returned to Colville and began a 16 year career with Plum Creek Lumber in Arden, WA. Elmer married Jo Villers in January of 1974 and they had two children, Wendy and Benjamin. Following his career with Plum Creek Lumber, Elmer worked in the construction industry. He later purchased a backhoe and continued assisting on construction projects while also branching out into other land works opportunities. On March 9, 2009, Elmer married Dawn Byington in Coeur d’Alene, ID. When he and Dawn joined their life together, Elmer graciously and with open arms, embraced her family as his own. Together they resided in Colville. Elmer worked until he was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia. His rapidly declining health then required an early retirement and his undivided attention.
Elmer loved to spend time experiencing outdoor adventures. Elmer created an exploration adventure every Sunday with his family. They would take Sunday drives to old mines, homestead cabins, abandoned military listening stations, old missionary sites and any other ghost town or 'haunted' settlement he could find. He was a genuine 'kid-at-heart' and found unparalleled enjoyment with his kids building backyard ponds, zip-lines, rafts, riding motorcycles, three-wheelers, camping always taking time to stop at the store to pick up a treat to compliment the adventure. Later on he had become an avid fisherman. He loved spending the day at the river, on his boat or at the beach. He also enjoyed working at his home, planting new trees or working in his garden. He loved making things grow. Elmer would create birdhouse replicas of his friends and family’s homes, each with the appropriate finishing touch of stairs, window frames, deck railing, and some of his own creation. He would then gift the birdhouses away to their matching owners. Elmer took the time to ask about the well-being of others around him even in times of great illness. He faced life with a great attitude, playing pranks, telling jokes and always with his own ornery flare.
Elmer was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Paul Day on Aug. 19, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, Dawn Day, at the home; daughter, Wendy Coleman and her husband, Shane, Colville, WA; parents, John and Elsie Day, Colville, WA; brothers, Dick Day, Olympia, WA, LeRoy Day and his wife, Sharon, Colville, WA, Gary Day and his wife, Maria,
