ROBERT WALLACE JAMES
April 29, 1940 - April 19, 2010
Robert James, a thirty-two year resident of the Gifford area, passed away on April 19, 2010 at his home at the age of 69. He was born April 29, 1940 in Clifton, Colorado the son of Walter and Marjorie (Blakey) James.
Bob first came to the Gifford area with his family at the age of 10. He attended school in Hunters and was a 1958 graduate of Columbia High School. He joined the Air Force shortly after graduation and served his county the following twenty years as an aerospace mechanic. He served two tours in Vietnam and earned two Distinguished Flying Crosses during that time. He retired at a base in Alaska in 1978 and moved permanently to the family homestead near Gifford.
In his retirement, he attended Spokane Community College where he attained an Associates Degree in diesel mechanics. Bob loved the freedom his retirement allowed and spent most of his time helping others in need. He was very active in his church membership and community services, particularly in youth activities. In 1993 he bought a small portable sawmill that he operated until his passing doing custom millwork for friends and neighbors. He also drove school bus for the Summit Valley School for a time. He especially loved hunting and fishing when time permitted and was well known for his marksmanship. Bob married Bonnie Link on December 11, 2003 in Australia while they were vacationing there.
Bob is survived by his wife, Bonnie, at the home; daughters Teresa Smith and husband, Terry, of Soap Lake, WA and Sheree James of Spokane; his son Dan James and wife, Aysha-Ann, of Federal Way, WA; his sister Dorothy Smith of Billings, MT; nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
The Danekas Funeral Chapel is caring for the family.

Joyce Todd McPhee
June 24, 1925 - April 15, 2010
Joyce Todd McPhee passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2010. She was born June 24, 1925, in Salinas, California. She was raised in Sacramento, California, and loved spending time at the family ranch in Los Banos, California, with her brother Carrick. While in Sacramento, she met and married Robert E. Todd, and they had four children - Tom, Bob, Marti and Jim. Joyce and Bob were very active in the Young Republicans. In 1955, they moved from Sacramento to a ranch in Ione, California.
Joyce relocated to Carmel Valley with the kids in 1962. She spent time in Hawaii where she owned and operated a nightclub in Lahaina, Maui. When she returned to Carmel, she met and married Ed McPhee in 1970. They owned and operated an answering service, were avid golfers, and both became pilots. They traveled extensively after purchasing a small airplane. Joyce loved the ocean by Carmel and Pebble Beach and began painting her beautiful seascapes.
Ed and Joyce moved to Colville in 1986 to be closer to her children. They purchased and operated the Sears Catalog Store and Joyce spent a short time selling real estate. When Ed passed away, she met her special friend Rich Tilton. They spent many years together fishing, golfing and traveling south in the winter. Joyce loved to entertain, and she was a member of the Hospital Auxiliary and the Eagles. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Joyce is survived by her sons, Thomas E. Todd and wife, Patti, Colville, Robert E. Todd Jr., Colville, James H. Todd and wife, Linda, Hawaii; daughter Marti J. Todd, Colville; step-daughter Heather McPhee Ruskievicz and husband, Steve, Colville; fifteen grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren, and special friends Rich Tilton, Kettle Falls, and Claudia Koontz-Goering, Colville.
At Joyce’s request, there will be no services. Memorial gifts may be made to Hospice of Spokane, P.O. Box 808, Chewelah, WA 99109.
Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory is entrusted with the arrangements.

PATRICK DENNIS BEITEY
December 8, 1965 - April 10, 2010
Patrick 'Pat' Dennis Beitey, a longtime resident of Valley, WA passed away on April 10, 2010 in Chewelah, WA at the age of 44. He was born on December 8, 1965 in Spokane, WA the son of Gerald Joseph and Nadine Marie (Healy) Beitey.
Pat was raised and attended school in the Reardan, WA area, and graduated from Reardan High School in 1984. He enjoyed learning life skills from the Boy Scouts, and after years of dedication and service became an Eagle Scout in 1984 with Troop 782 in Reardan. His service to his country continued after graduation when he served honorably for the United States Army in the 101st Airborne Division for 3 years in active duty and 6 years in the reserves. Pat was very proud of his military service. Pat then went to college where he earned his Associates Degree. He then worked in both the aquaculture and agriculture fields at his family’s fish hatchery near Valley, and his family’s grain farm near Reardan.
Pat loved spending time outdoors. As a Boy Scout he took many backpacking and canoeing trips. Some of his more significant backpacking trips included the Chilkoot Trail out of Skagway, Alaska, and the Chief Joe Wilderness area in central Idaho. He also climbed Mt. Hood and Mt Rainier. Among his more significant canoeing trips were the Smith River in north-central Montana, the Grande Ronde River in Northeast Oregon, and the Clearwater River in central Idaho.
Pat was especially close to his family, friends and Catholic faith. Pat was extremely compassionate, caring and kind, and he enriched the lives of those he knew. Pat will be sorely missed by all who knew him, but especially his loving family and friends.
Pat was preceded in death by his brother Thomas Richard Beitey. He is survived by his parents Gerald and Nadine Beitey of Valley, WA, and his brothers Dan Beitey of Spokane, WA and Joe Beitey of Auburn, WA.

JOHN EDWARD HAMILTON
March 24, 1964 - April 7, 2010
John Edward Hamilton, long time resident of Colville, passed away on Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at his home surrounded by his family. John was born March 24, 1964 in Seattle, Washington and grew up in San Diego, California. When he was 16 years old he attended Colville High School and graduated in 1982. On June 6, 1992, John married his soul mate, Deani. John, Deani and John’s young son, Chris, created an instant family of three. They were blessed with the addition of their daughter, Amanda, and son, Josh soon after.
John was well known with the McDonald’s organization in Portland, Oregon, which led to supervisory positions in La Grande, Baker City and Pendleton, Oregon. John took a new track in life and started working for Colmac Coil in 2002. Before becoming an Engineer Designer for Research and Development, John worked in various positions.
John was a devoted husband and father who always volunteered his time to youth programs. He was the Tribe U-10, U-12 and U-14 traveling fast pitch coach. He was also the traveling youth soccer coach of U-12 and U-14. John served as the vice president of the Basement Boys Wrestling team. John loved athletics and attended various sporting events whether his kids were apart of the team or not. His presence and support at these functions will be missed.
In his free time John loved to be with his family as well as in the outdoors where he hunted for that trophy mule deer.
John was a wonderfully generous person who would always be there to lend a helping hand and an individual that always did the right thing. He will be greatly missed by everyone who crossed paths with him.

Hannelore Wertz
October 8, 1930 - April 5, 2010
Hannelore Wertz, a 13 year resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on April 5, 2010 at her Chewelah, WA home. Hannelore was born on Oct. 8, 1930 in Duisburg, Germany the daughter of Karl Hermann and Katharina (Klewer) Schoner.
She was raised in Marburg, Germany where at the age of 15, she met a young service man, Wallace Wertz. They were wed on Oct. 1, 1948 and moved to the United States. In 1952 they came to Camino Island, WA. Hannelore worked in the home, tending to the needs of her family. She also was the bookkeeper for the family logging business which they began after moving to Stanwood, WA in 1958. In 1990, she and Wally moved to Cedar Lake, WA and raised Angus beef. Approaching retirement, they settled into Chewelah in 1998 where they ran a small used car lot. Wallace preceded her in death in 2007.
Hannelore raised her children with love. She expressed her affection through devotion and attentiveness to needs of her family. Hannelore was a member of the PTA and enjoyed bowling in community leagues. As her health needs increased, she embraced the personal care and often 'played possum' to keep those around her on their toes. She took great pride in her home, personal appearance and the character of her family.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Guenther and her sister, Else.
Hannelore is survived by her sons: Norman Wertz and his wife, Lisa, Chewelah, WA, Wyatt Wertz and friend, Wanda of Princeton, NC; daughters, Monica Newman and husband, Scott, Gunnison, CO, Debbie Mickelson and husband, Terry, Georgetown Lake, MT; grandchildren, Jill Davenport and husband, Jeff, Brenda Garrett, Ken Garrett and wife, Amanda, Stephanie and Dylan Wertz, Katharine Newman, Sarah and Reed Wertz, Wendy Brown, Carrie Wertz; great grandchildren, Katelynn and Makenna Garrett.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Chewelah Memorial Park cemetery, Chewelah, WA with Pastor Shane Moffitt officiating. Memorial contributions may be given to the Red Cross.

DAVE MARTIN STOLP
November 15, 1942 - April 1, 2010
Dave Stolp, 67, a lifelong resident of Chewelah passed away on April 1, 2010 in Spokane, Washington. He was born November 15, 1942 in Chewelah, the only child of Ralph and Opal (Vincent) Stolp. Dave was raised on the family farm and attended school in Chewelah, graduating from Jenkins High School in 1961. He married Kathy Elstermeier on September 11, 1965, and together they continued their education in Pullman at Washington State University. Dave earned his bachelor’s degree in Agriculture Education, graduating from WSU in 1968. After college graduation he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Military Police. He and Kathy were stationed in Okinawa, Japan, where he attained the rank of Captain, serving until he was honorably discharge in 1971.
Once back in the states, Dave taught Agriculture at the school in Mabton, WA, for a year. They were anxious to move back to their hometown and give their children the same small town upbringing that they enjoyed so much. Dave went to work at Jenkins High School teaching Agriculture Education for a few years. When his father wanted to retire from the farm, Dave took over the family farm, working it for over 20 years. During the winters, he enjoyed riding snowmobiles with his family on the hills around his home. In 1997, to enable the two youngest boys to attend Upper Columbia Academy at Spangle, WA, he and Kathy started long-haul trucking. They have been in every state and five Canadian Providences. Dave was hard-working and self-reliant, maintaining his own equipment and truck. Dave’s dad said ‘A man is only as good as his word’, and Dave truly lived up to his word.
Dave’s love of Mustangs and restoring them was a passion of his and he always looked forward to working on his cars. He also enjoyed working on the computer and served in the local Seventh-day Adventist Church in many ways including publishing a church directory. Dave was committed to his family and they always knew they could count on him. He left an imprint on each of their hearts and will be deeply missed by them.
Dave was preceded by his father Ralph Stolp in 1989. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Kathy; his mother Opal Stolp; son Dan and his wife Angie (Powell) of Brewster; son Joshua and his wife Amanda (Golden) of Chewelah; daughter Julie Buck and her husband Kelly of Post Falls, ID; son Michael and his wife Crystal (Norton) of North Pole, AK at the Eielson Air Force Base; 4 grandchildren, Dustin, Taylor, Amilia and Thalan.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, April 5 at the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Chewelah, Washington. The Danekas Funeral Chapel & Crematory in Chewelah have been entrusted with arrangements.

ROSE CATHERINE DANICHEK
September 20, 1922 - March 29, 2010
Rose Catherine Danichek, 87, a longtime resident of Colville, WA passed away Monday March 29, 2010 at Buena Vista Nursing Home. She was born September 20, 1922 in Red Lodge, MT to Blaz and Mary (Grenko) Sneider.
Rose grew up in Red Lodge MT. She married Sam Danichek, of Bearcreek, MT on October 18, 1941. Rose was a stay-at-home wife and mother caring for her husband and three children. She sewed all of the clothing for herself and her children. She had the ability to create unique items so outfits were like no others. In her spare time Rose enjoyed needlework, such as embroidery and crocheting. She made very intricate doilies that are still enjoyed by her family today. She also enjoyed spending days outdoors growing beautiful begonias and roses; as well as tending a vegetable garden that yielded produce for the dinner table as well as canned goods for the entire year. One of her passions was jigsaw puzzles that she would work for hours getting blisters on her elbows from leaning on the table so long.
Sam being a miner moved the family to Metaline Falls, WA in 1963 and then to Colville in 1966. After moving to Colville, Rose began working at Mount Carmel Hospital in the dietary department. After several years, she then went to work for Drs. Goetter, Gray and Doyle, as their billing clerk, where she stayed until her retirement in 1980.
Rose is preceded in death by her husband Sam of 54 years; sisters, Toni Northy and Dorothy Collier; and a brother and sister who died in infancy.
She is survived by her daughters, Sharon Carr and her husband Ed of Deer Park, WA; Sandra Danichek of Colville, WA; and son, Fred Danichek of Yuma, AZ; granddaughters, Christy Iverson of Colville, WA; Lynn Cotter and husband Jim of Spokane, WA; great-grandchildren, McKenna Iverson; Samantha and Colton Cotter; sister, Vida Brown of Richland, WA; numerous nieces and nephews.
Danekas Funeral Chapel & Crematory have been entrusted with the arrangements.

MARY RUTH SMITH
December 4, 1928 - March 24, 2010
Mary Ruth Smith, a longtime resident of Chewelah, WA passed away on March 24, 2010 in her home at the age of 81. She was born on December 4, 1928 in Republic, WA, the daughter of Dr. Karl Joseph and Adeline (Mires) May.
Mary Ruth lived in Republic until 1945 at which time her father moved his practice to Chewelah. She attended Catholic Schools in Spokane and Oregon. Mary Ruth met the love of her life Ernest Smith in Chewelah at the movie theatre. The sparkle in his eye captured her heart and they were wed on December 30, 1952. She was a homemaker most of her life, caring for the house and family. Ernie and Mary Ruth owned Northwest Marble Products in Chewelah. She took care of the books for many years. Those first years were spent answering the phone for the business at home and running the messages to the plant, until the phone line was installed at the plant.
Mary Ruth belonged to the St Mary of Rosary Church and was usually seen at Saturday evening Mass. She was a member of a bowling league for several years. She spent many years with good friend, Jackie Lindquist, gardening and canning the products of their labor. She enjoyed playing cards with Donna and having coffee with Peggy. She was always ready to give away a hug.
Mary Ruth loved to spend time outdoors riding her bicycle or enjoying long walks in the fresh air. She grew up swimming on Curlew Lake and passed that ability on to her children. Her creative side showed in her beautiful paint and thread embroideries, and her stamping projects. She also loved dogs and cats, and carried treats with her to give to neighborhood dogs. Mary Ruth loved and cared for her family, and always had cookies on hand for her grandchildren.
Mary Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Ernest Smith, whom she sorely missed, also her brothers Robert May and Karl 'Bud' May, Jr. She is survived by her sons, Ernie Karl Smith of Sequim, WA, Michael Smith, wife Lillian, and Rodger Smith, wife Anne, both of Chewelah, WA; her daughter Teresa Palmer, husband Craig also of Chewelah, WA; her brother John May and wife Joanie of Chewelah, WA; her sister Greta Browne of Portland, OR and 14 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Carl Edward Moore passed away March 23, 2010 at his home in Loon Lake, WA. He was born October 18, 1953 in Spokane, WA to Edward and Alice Moore.
Carl is preceded in death by his father, Edward Moore; brother, Edward Carl Moore; and nephew, Marvin Butcher II.
He is survived by his mother, Alice G. Moore of Spokane, WA; sister, Marylynn J. Brown of Spokane, WA; two nieces, April D. Brown of Spokane, WA; Channa R. Roland and husband Jon and 4 children of Colbert, WA; two nephew, Jerry J. Brown II and his wife Danielle of Deer Park, WA; two great nieces, Aleica Lee Brown and Alexis Le’fay Brown of Deer Park, WA; nephew, James Edward Butcher and his wife Tura Lynn of Billings, MT; great nephew, Dominick Marvin Butcher of Billings, MT; step nieces, Lexus and Jazzmin Roland of Colbert, WA; step nephews, Zach and Brent Roland of Colbert, WA; several cousins.
