Marvin Franklin Warren

Marvin Franklin Warren, a 28-year resident of Evans, passed away on February 9, 2011 in Colville at the age of 70. Marvin was born on Dec. 18, 1940 in Huntington, UT, the son of Melvin and Winifred (Knight) Warren.
At the age of seven, Marvin moved with his family to Kenilsworth, UT. He attended school in Price, UT and graduated on May 26, 1961 from Carbon High School. Marvin then worked in Salt Lake, UT until he was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1962. Marvin served in Korea and was honorably discharged on Aug. 21, 1964 in Fort Lewis. Marvin remained in the Seattle area where he attended the Edison Vocational School (now Seattle Community College) where he earned an associates degree as a diesel mechanic. Following graduation, Marvin began working as a mechanic in a Seattle Ford Dealership and later transferred to E.D.C. where his diesel mechanic education served him well. On Aug. 25, 1968, Marvin married a long-time friend, Felicidad 'Phyllis' B. Gabutero in the Seventh Day Adventist Church near Volunteer Park. Marvin eventually retired as a mechanic and began working for Johnson’s Home Cleaning Service. He would later branch out on his own and continue in the home cleaning industry. In 1983, Marvin moved with his wife and two sons to Evans. Marvin worked for a time at Aladdin Stove before working in the Colville School District as a custodian. Marvin also worked part-time in the evenings as a custodian at Excell Foods. Due to his declining vision, Marvin retired in 1995.
He enjoyed spending time caring for his garden and target shooting. He also shared quality time with his friends, especially Wayne Kooser and Frank McDonald. Marvin took his family on many camping trips, often hiking for hours. He was an excellent provider for his family and was always available when a friend was in need. Marvin volunteered at the Seventh Day Adventist clothing bank, food bank and other outreach programs. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife as a, 'companion sent from God' and to his son, 'a dad who was always there for me.'
Marvin was preceded in death by his son, Adam N. Warren in 1999, a sister, Mary Jo Kelly and two of his brothers, Melvin and Elvin Warren.
He is survived by his, wife, Phyllis Warren, at the home; son, Jacob Warren, Evans; brothers, Dean Sullivan and wife, Valleen of UT, Doyle Warren and wife, Kathy of UT; sister, Ruth Aders and husband, Larry of UT; sisters, Marie Skinner of UT, Betty Wortley of Price, UT, Lynn Green of CO. and Lynda Benson of MS; brother, Tim Warren and wife, Dixie of UT; sister-in-law, Ina Warren of UT; brother-in-law, Dennis Kelley of Washington, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service to honor and celebrate Mr. Marvin Warren will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to the Amazing Facts, P.O. Box 1058, Roseville, CA 95678-8058.

Julia Ellen Hood

Julia Ellen Hood, a 50 year resident of Colville passed away on Feb. 12 in Colville, at the age of 82. Julia was born on Aug. 4, 1928 in Tonasket, the daughter of Ernest F. G. and Jessie May (Heslop) Meyer.
Julia was raised in Tonasket where she attended school at Mount Hall. During the summer and fall harvest, she worked in the orchards in Oroville. Julia also worked at the Oroville grocery store where she was introduced to a handsome young man named Earl Hood. Their courtship and growing love for one another led to their marriage on Feb. 10, 1946. They began a family and soon moved to Retsil, WA. Julia and Earl followed work opportunities and moved with their family between Retsil and Phoenix, AZ for several years. Julia worked in the home during this time and tended to the needs of her family. In the early 1950’s, the family moved to Colville where Earl worked for Hathaway’s Market and then in the logging industry where he lost his life in an accident. Julia then returned to work in the orchards during the harvest season in Brewster.
After a few years, Julia was able to work year round in Colville as a sales clerk in several businesses including, Friedman’s grocery store, Fonks and Coulter’s Jewelry. In 1974, Julia lost her home to a fire and moved to Spokane where she worked in the real estate industry and as a postal clerk. She returned to Colville in the early 1980’s and worked in the senior work program with the Forest Service taking care of the Ranger Stations and camp grounds.Julia retired in the early 1990’s and has remained in Colville since that time.
Julia knew the challenges and rewards of raising her children, and found great support from her neighborhood and within her church community. She was never one to slow down, especially while behind the wheel of her car. When pulled over (twice in the last year) she would often say to the officer, "well, no one goes that slow on this road."
She had a strong and courageous character with a loving, caring and giving nature. Julia was also a woman of great faith who was fondly referred to as the 'rock of her family.' She enjoyed life outdoors and spent many hours fishing, camping, riding motorcycles, gardening and creating stained glass.
Julia was preceded in death by her husband, Earl.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Manz, Newport, Eileen Fehrenbach and husband, Joe, Polson, MT; sons, Earl 'Dusty' Hood and wife, Mary, Evans, David Hood, Diamond Lake; grandchildren, Fred Manz and wife, Denise, Jodi Windauer and husband, Mike, Gary Fehrenbach, Tiffany Steeley and husband, Ken, Steve Sanders and wife, Laura, Scott Sanders, Jeremiah Hood, Rick Hood and wife, Tasha, Chuck Cedergren, Sonya Hood, Leah Clark and husband, Del; great-grandchildren, Garrick, Brady, Cherami, Ryan, Jake, Nick, Nayeli, Trevor, Korren, Makayla, Raylena, Trace, Ricky, Charlie, Jewel, Sydney, Dakota and Orlando; and a great-great grandchild, Kingston.
A graveside service and vault interment for Mrs. Julia Hood will begin at 1 p.m., Thursday, February, 17 at Highland cemetery in Colville. Pastor Tim Goble will officiate. Memorial contributions may be given to the Union Gospel Mission.

Grace Rausch

Grace E. Rausch, 80, a long-time resident of Chewelah, passed away Feb. 5, 2011 in Spokane. She was born June 17, 1930 in Graves, MT to George and Clara (Grytdal) Schneider.
Grace moved to the Addy and Blue Creek area, where she attended Blue Creek schools and graduated from Jenkins High School (Chewelah) in 1947 at the age of 16.
She married John Seabrandt on May 26, 1951 and he passed away on May 26, 1981 on their 30th wedding anniversary. Grace was an insurance agent and owned the old local Allstate Insurance office. She married a childhood friend, Victor Rausch, on August 5, 1989.
Grace could always be found at a school sports event, watching one of her many grandchildren’s games.
Grace loved to cook and always dreamed of owning and operating her own restaurant. Vic always teased her about having flour on her clothes. She was always baking something delicious. Grace enjoyed playing card games with her family and especially pinochle with the Addy Homemakers Club. She grew a wonderful garden and then canned what she grew and more. Grace would create her own ceramics from start to finish with her own kiln.
What Grace loved most was her family. If she thought you had not visited her enough, she would mail you a map with stick figures showing you how to find her house.
Grace was preceded in death by her husband, John Seabrandt; brothers, Charlie, Bud, Dick, and Roach Schneider; and by a sister, Helen Johnson.
She is survived by her husband of 21 years, Victor Rausch; daughters, Carolyn Wissink and Tom, Mead; Randi Nilsson and Fred, Chewelah; Pam Crnich and Bob, Chewelah; Vickie Mann and Marvin, Valley; Renae Schwager and Les, Chewelah; Pam Rausch and Ted, Liberty Lake; a son, Kenneth Rausch and Kim, Spokane Valley; 12 grandchildren; 30-plus great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
There will be no service at this time.

Charles Falstad

Charles 'Wayne' Falstad, long-time local farmer and rancher, died peacefully April 7, 2011.
Wayne was born Nov. 24, 1927 in Sunnyside, to Chuck and Maude (King) Falstad. The family moved to Addy when Wayne was a small child. He attended Westside Grade School and Jenkins High School.
Wayne joined the Army Air Force and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands as a diesel mechanic.
He married Sonia Brownfield in September, 1962. He was a founding member of the Addy Fire Department, where he served as Chief for many years and retired as Fire Commissioner.
In addition to farming, Wayne spent many winters plowing snow for Stevens County out of the Addy substation. He also logged and did custom combine, dozer and trencher work.
Wayne is survived by his wife of 48 years, Sonia, at the family farm; children, Karen of Chewelah; Doug of Addy; Tamara of Spokane; six grandchildren, Dan of Kettle Falls; Charlotte and Travis of Addy and Dustin, Logan and Colten of Spokane; three great-grandchildren, Gentry, Lindsey and Lyndon of Kettle Falls; two sisters, Donna Kreis of Colville and Carole Hanson of Chewelah.
At his request, no funeral service will be held.

Donald Kelley
Tuesday, 19 April 2011
Donald C. Kelley, 66, attended at home by many members of his adoring family, passed on to his heavenly home on April 12, 2011 after a valiant battle with cancer.
Don is survived by his wife, Dolores (Thompson) Kelley, Kettle Falls; his sister, Patricia Kelley and brothers Leroy, Melvin and Dennis Kelley, Yakima; and Russel Kelley, Modesto, CA; his daughter, Konnie Pinell, Federal way and son Paul Kelley, Tacoma.
Don proudly loved his extended family, including 14 grandchildren, two great-granddaughters and numerous nieces and nephews (with their families).
He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Laura Kelley, Yakima, and by a grandson, J.J May of Northport.
Don was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He attended schools in the Yakima Valley, played high school football at Mabton and graduated from West Valley High School in 1963. After military service in Korea during the Viet Nam era, he attended a community college in Seattle.
Don’s extended family and many friends will miss him and his exceptional selflessness, ever present humor and enduring love. We dearly admired and loved him. He was a model of integrity, a humble man of faith.
Don’s final service was held April 19 at Sea Tac Bible Church in Auburn.
A graveside full military salute was conducted for him at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.
A memorial service to celebrate Don’s life will be held at a later date in Northport.

Vester Kinder

Vester Carl Kinder, age 87, passed away on April 11, 2011 in Colville. He was born on Sept. 18, 1923 in Kline, CO, the son of Carl Ross and Etna Arleta (Gerard) Kinder.
Vester moved around with his family throughout the West, living in California and New Mexico before settling in Kettle Falls during the Depression. He met the love of his life, Janet Tilson, and they were married on May 27, 1944.
Vester was drafted into the United States Navy in 1945 and served for two years before his honorable discharge in 1946. He returned to Kettle Falls where he and Janet raised their family. Vester worked for Brauner’s Lumber Company for sev­eral years as a mechanic before he purchased the Phillips 66 Gas Station in Kettle Falls. In 1962 he sold the station and bought an amusement route from Orville Clemons, servicing arcade equipment around the area. Vester retired in the 1970’s and started spending their winters at their home in Arizona.
Vester loved spending time at flea markets and yard sales. He also enjoyed riding snowmobiles and mopeds. Vester and Janet were travelers at heart and loved spending time seeing and experiencing new places. They made several trips to Mex­ico and had a great time when they went to Alaska. They win­tered several years in Arizona.
Vester was a great husband and father, and will be missed by all.
Vester was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Kinder.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Janet Kinder; his daughters, Trini Peters and husband Mike, Evans; and Penny Kinder, Evans; his sisters, Rowena McIntosh, Kettle Falls; Bethine Henderson and husband Bob, Battle Ground; his brother, Max Kinder, Osburn, Idaho; his sister-in-law, Jill Kinder, Colville; seven grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial for family and friends will take place at a later date.

Therese Duke

Therese Joann Duke, a 23-year resident of Chewelah, passed away on April 7, 2011 in Chewelah at the age of 52. Therese was born on May 10, 1958 in Staten Island, NY, the daughter of Michael and Joann (Lotte) Sekowsky.
Therese was raised in Edmonds, where she attended school and graduated from Woodway High School. Following high school, Therese moved to Harrison, NY in Westchester County, where she worked as a housekeeper while staying with family. In the early 1970’s, Therese returned to Western Washington and along the way, resided for a short time in Santa Barbara, CA. While in Western Washington, she attended cosmetology school and worked as a hairdresser. Therese began a family with the birth of her daughter, Adrienne, and then moved to Chewelah in 1988. Her family grew with the birth of her son, Andrew. Therese was able to stay home when her children were very young and care for their needs directly. As the needs of her family grew, Therese began housekeeping again. This led her to Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home, where she also cooked meals. Therese also worked for Rural Resources in their senior needs program and Meals-on-Wheels. Her abilities as a cook brought her into partnership at Tiffney’s Restaurant and later at the Grubstake Grille in Chewelah.
Therese enjoyed cooking both for her customers and for her family. She had a wonderful heart for animals and collected oceanside keepsakes in remembrance of her youth near the ocean. Therese was very protective of her children and often worked second jobs to send them on special vacations. She was an avid reader, with a special interest in true crime novels. Therese enjoyed crafting with her rare moments of spare time, during which she made her family many quilts and created many needlepoint collectibles. She loved to work and had a complimenting work ethic.
Therese was preceded in death by her father, Michael Sekowsky.
She is survived by her daughter, Adrienne Duke, Olympia; a son, Andy Duke, Pullman; mother, Joann Sekowsky, Spokane; a sister, Leslie Arms, Colville; mother-in-law, Juanita Duke, Chewelah, and a host of friends.
A memorial service for Mrs. Therese J. Duke was held April 15 at the Grubstake Grille in Chewelah.
Memorial contributions may be given to the charity of your choice.

Gregory Gates

Gregory 'Greg' E. Gates died Monday, March 28, 2011 in a single vehicle car accident. He was 72 years-old. He was born and raised in Chicago, IL. After his retirement, he spent summers with his daughter in Rice and winters with his daughter in Yuma, AZ.
Greg was a graduate of IIT, Purdue University and Stanford University. He worked for NASA and the space program. He then went on to further his career in computers, investments, and taxes through many entrepreneurial endeavors.
Greg had a great sense of adventure which led him to travel around the world. He loved to watch sports, play bridge, and fly his model airplanes, but his true pride and joy was his family.
Greg was preceded in death by his parents, Virginia and John Gates.
Greg is survived by his daughters, Donna R. Gates (Todd Freeman), Yuma; and Donna L. Gates, Rice; a brother, Dr. Dennis (Lois) Gates, Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Kendra, Briella, Seneca, Joel, Rebekah, Liana, Samuel, Daniel, and Justus; nieces and nephews, Ginnie, John, Peter, Alba, and David.
He was a beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle who will be missed greatly.
His memorial service will be held at Summit Valley Community Church in Addy on Saturday, April 23 at 11:30 a.m. All are welcome.
