He was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Anaconda, Mont., the son of Matthew and Madeline (Brown) Kelly. As a boy he worked on his father's ranch in Rosebud County, Mont., before entering the Civilian Conservation Corps, where he helped build campgrounds and trails in Glacier National Park.

Vincent married Laura "Laberta" Jellison on July 19, 1938, in Ashland, Mont. The couple had one daughter, Verna, who was born in 1939.

In January of 1944, Vincent was inducted into the U.S. Army. He served in Germany and at the Battle of the Bulge during World War II. After his discharge in March of 1946, he returned to Forsyth, Mont., to raise alfalfa seed and wheat on his ranch. He sold the ranch in 1954 and went into construction.

He worked on several major projects including the Glen Canyon dam in Arizona. In 1965 he traveled to Venezuela to work for 18 months on the Guri River dam project. Vincent completed his construction work for the Perini Company and retired in 1981.

Alvus ‘Bud' Squires

Alvus B. "Bud" Squires, 85, a resident of Alger, died Nov. 20, 2003, at Skagit Valley Hospital.

He was born June 28, 1918, in LaBelle, Idaho, the second of the seven children of Melvin and Ora Morgan Squires. Raised in Archer, Idaho, Bud spent his childhood riding horses, singing in the Boy Scouts quartet and kicking up his heels at country dances, where girls lined up to dance with him.

After a hard day's work in the fields, whether it was potatoes, beets or bucking hay, Bud enjoyed a swim, a quick trip to the fishin' hole or an activity at the Mormon Church, of which he was a member.

As a teenager during the Depression, he and his brother Blaine hopped the train each summer for Montana to work in the hay, sending half of his earnings home. He was always thinking of others, especially his mother Ora. His love of adventure took him to California, where he learned to weld. This trade took him all over the United States, building dams, hospitals and schools.

Bud married Elaine Bybee in 1943. They settled in Burlington with daughters Linda and Brenda, with Sheila following later. Bud worked at Shell Oil Refinery in Anacortes as a welder/pipefitter, and was a valued member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union, Local No. 26.

On Dec. 31, 1960, Bud married Ronella Smith Sattler in Mount Vernon and became a father to Kevin, Joni, Kim and Carol. Bud's strong work ethic took him to other areas in the Northwest on construction jobs. In 1967 Bud moved his family to Alger on Friday Creek, which became a haven to family and friends. Many community gatherings were held at "his park," and songfests and the two-step prevailed.

When Bud retired from welding, he left many signature projects around the valley. In his later years fishing prevailed. He took up fly tying and gave his flies away with love.

Besides the cowboy hat and welding cap, Bud wore the B-E baseball cap, representing the support he gave his grandchildren in all their endeavors; his heart was wherever they were. He taught them the meaning of love, generosity and honesty.

He was a man who unceremoniously gave strength, friendship and an occasional cold beer; he knew no stranger. All will miss "Hi ya babe" stories from the past, his harmony and his fighting spirit.

Bud is survived by his loving wife and buddy Ronella of Alger; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Tom Marlow of Eureka, Calif., Brenda and Jim Marek of Great Falls, Mont., Sheila and Gary Baker of Langley, British Columbia, Joni and Charles Bulfinch of Anacortes, Kim Sattler and Carol and John Doyle of Burlington; son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Linda Sailor of Kent; grandchildren Vaughan and Brysen Bulfinch, Dustin and Kevin Roth, Genevieve, J.J. and Olivia Doyle, Gina Marlow, Janelle Babinsky, Jennifer Coleman, Kimberly Kassa, Jamie and Kyle Baker and Desiree, Monique, Breana and Mylen Sailor; 11 great-grandchildren; brothers and wives Darold and Bev Squires and Melvin and Barbara Squires; sister and brother-in-law Nona and Bob McQueen, all of California; brother-in-law Jack Smith of Tacoma; numerous nieces and nephews and a loving community of friends.

Graveside services were at Fernhill cemetery, Anacortes on Nov. 22, 2003. A gathering to celebrate Bud's life was Saturday, Nov. 29, at Alger Community Hall.
