Jennie Wickre - January 20, 1999

Jennie Alma Volborg Wickre, 97, a 52-year resident of Hoquiam, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Grays Harbor Community Hospital at Aberdeen.

Mrs. Wickre was born Jenny Sandberg on Nov. 6, 1901, at Garnanas, in the parish of Brakne-Hoby, in southern Sweden to Adolf and Ida (Olsdotter) Sandberg. The spelling of her first name was changed when she immigrated later to the United States through Ellis Island, N.Y.

When she was a year old, she and her parents moved to Dragsnas in Ronneby, where her father, a stone mason, had built a home. She grew up there and graduated from high school in Ronneby in 1919.

When she finished school, she worked as a waitress in a hotel, then began training as a nurse. At about the same time, her family received a request from some Swedish friends in America for someone to come to Michigan to care for an ill relative, a Mrs. Carlson.

She arrived in Munising, Mich., the day after Mrs. Carlson died, but the family kept her on as a housekeeper.

On Jan. 17, 1924, she married Mrs. Carlson's son, John Frederick. They lived at Munising until moving to Hoquiam in 1947. He died in 1962.

On Dec. 30, 1967, she married Julius Wickre at Hoquiam. He died in 1996.

Mrs. Wickre was very proud to have become an American citizen around 1929.

She had worked as a nurses aide at a nursing home and, for several years, at the Hoquiam Elks.

She was a life member of the Sons of Norway and the American Legion.

Mrs. Wickre was known for her compassion and warm, generous nature.

She is survived by three children, Charles Carlson and Pauline Haner, both of Hoquiam, and Marlys Canfield of Higden, Ark.; two stepsons, Lee of Central Point, Ore., and Ray of Ilwaco; a brother, Sven Sandberg of Dragsnas; a sister, Herta of Karlshamn, Sweden; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

A daughter, Dorothy Anderson, died in 1994. Four brothers, Viktor, Karl, Oskar and Fridolf Sandberg; three sisters, Anny, Anna Maria and Signe, and two grandchildren, also died before her.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 tonight and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

A funeral is set for 2 p.m. Saturday at Saron Lutheran Church in Hoquiam. Interment will follow in Hoquiam's Sunset Memorial Park.

Richard Allen Martin
June 8, 1934 - November 27, 2013

Richard Allen Martin, 79, a Raymond resident passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2013 in South Bend, WA surrounded by his family. Rick was born in Vancouver, WA on June 8th, 1934 to P.F. Martin and Laura J. (Dahl) Martin. He grew up in Orchards, WA with two sisters and three brothers.

He often told of going to five different high schools following his family along the Columbia River on different jobs and graduating at Richland High School in 1952.

Rick moved to the Seattle area and worked for a time at Boeing while racing motorcycles on the AMA Circuit with the Tacoma Ducks motorcycle club.

He met Pat Sevilles on her birthday Sept. 27th 1956 at the Newaukum grange dance. They were married on Dec. 1, 1956 because he was drafted into the Army leaving on Dec. 7th. He trained at Ft. Belvor, Virginia and was stationed in Rhode Island. Pat followed him there where Richard Lee was born. Then once home again, he worked for Howard-Cooper Corp. as a mechanic then Patrick Lynn and Kerri Joanne were born. Rick loved babies so five years later Lorraine Xan was born; then off to Ellensburg to live in Taylor log camp, then moved to Aurora. He went to work for Austin-Western Graders for 10 years before returning home to Enumclaw working for Western Power & Equip. as top salesman. He returned in 1999 and enjoyed cruising, snow birding, and golfing with friends.

Rick was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS on Oct. 7th, 2013. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Patricia Martin. Four children: Lee (Betsy) Martin of Raymond, Lynn (Colleen) Martin of Anaheim, CA, Kerri (Lenny) Cantrell of Buckley, WA and Lori (Cris) Decker of Portland, OR. Grandchildren include Kara Cantrell-Nussbaum, Brian Cantrell, Amanda Cantrell, David Cantrell, Michelle Cantrell, Kailee Martin, Michael Martin, Megan Marin and Matthew Martin. Rick had one great grandchild, Makenzie Mae (Cantrell) Balsley. He is also survived by siblings Floyd (Jill) Martin and Nancy Cram, both of Yuma, AZ. Rick was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Donald (Mick), Gene, a sister Thelma and a grandson Brian.

Memorial services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at the Buckley Eagles in Buckley, Washington. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary of Raymond.

Robert R. Redmond
April 25, 1999

ELMA - Robert Randall Redmond, 67, an 18-year resident of Elma, died at home on Sunday, April 25, 1999.

He was born Sept. 2, 1931, to George N. and Dorothy A. (Bloodgood) Redmond at Atlantic, Iowa. He was raised in Atlantic and Santa Cruz, Calif., and graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1948. He served in the Navy from 1948 until 1968, and was a veteran of the Korean War. Among a number of other medals, his unit was awarded a Korean Presidential Unit Citation.

He also served as a flight instructor, and retired from the Navy with the rank of Chief Petty Officer. After his Navy service, he worked as a truck driver for 25 years and was the owner of the Salty Dog Tavern in Elma from 1981 to 1984.

He married Mary Susan Dooley at Coeur D'Alene, Idaho, on July 12, 1982. She survives at the family home.

He was a life member of VFW Post 1948, American Legion Post 119 and Eagles No. 1440, all of Elma.

He enjoyed golfing, carpentry and traveling in his R.V., and was very proud of his Navy service.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Phillip of Montesano, Jeffrey of Elma, David of Milaca, Minn., Paul and John, both of Kelso, and John Groves of Salem, Ore.; three daughters, Susan Kropuenske of Elma, Laurie Johnson of Aberdeen and Monica Martens of Elma; a brother, Dennis of San Francisco; a sister, Jackie Gleason, of Redding, Calif.; 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at the VFW Hall in Elma. Arrangements are by Whiteside Funeral Chapel of Elma.

Robert Bouch - January 28, 1999

Twelve-year Aberdeen resident Robert R. Bouch, 75, died Thursday, Jan. 28, 1999, in Grays Harbor Community Hospital at Aberdeen. He had been suffering from cancer and Parkinson's disease.

He was born Oct. 26, 1923, at Los Angeles, Calif., to Robert Tremayne and Ella (Simpson) Bouch. He grew up in Monrovia, Calif., where he graduated from Monrovia High School in 1941.

He attended Los Angeles Trade Tech at Los Angeles, Calif.

During World War II, Bouch was a printers mate 1st class in the Navy and was a Pearl Harbor survivor.

He had also lived at Randsburg, Calif., from 1947 to 1949; Hawthorne, Calif., until 1954; Baldwin Park, Calif., until 1964 and Alta Loma, Calif., until moving to Aberdeen.

On Oct. 13, 1946, he married Eileen Katherine Franklin at Monrovia. She survives him at a Hoquiam nursing home.

From 1947 until retiring in 1969, Bouch worked as a printer for daily newspapers. He then worked in the carpet service business for various companies in southern California.

His memberships included the Knights of Columbus in both Aberdeen and California and the Communication Workers of America and the International Typographical Union, both at Monrovia.

He had also been a scoutmaster for the San Gabriel Valley Boy Scouts Council in California from 1935 to 1978.

Bouch enjoyed fishing, painting, woodworking and singing in the church choir.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by seven sons, Patrick of Joshua Tree, Calif., Robert S. of Aberdeen, John of Alta Loma, Calif., James of Hoquiam, Christopher of Bishop, Calif., Michael of Upland, Calif., and Timothy of Montesano; two daughters, Kathleen Lemons of Paso Robles, Calif., and Theresa Hawker of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; a brother, William of Washoe Valley, Nev.; 15 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A great-grandchild died last November.

A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, in St. Mary's Catholic Church at Aberdeen.

Cremation was by Cascade Services of Washington at Aberdeen.

Donations in his memory are suggested to the American Cancer Society Grays Harbor/Pacific Unit, P.O. Box 743, Aberdeen, 98520; or American Parkinson's Disease Department of Medicine, Division of Neurology, RG-27, University of Washington, Seattle, 98195.

Hazel M. 'Doty' Daly - April 18, 1999

PORTLAND - Aberdeen native Hazel Mae "Doty" Daly, 72, died Sunday, April 18, 1999, at her home in Portland.

Mrs. Daly was born July 18, 1926, to William E. and Laura (Arney) Jenkins. She attended school in the North River area and graduated from the North River High School.

She graduated from Western State Chiropractic College in Portland trained as an X-ray technician.

She worked for several chiropractors and osteopaths in Portland and Kennewick.

In 1961, she married John Daly at Portland. He survives at the family home.

The couple owned Daly's Restaurant Service in Portland. In her later years, Mrs. Daly was a caregiver in her home.

She enjoyed painting, flowers, walking on the beach and entertaining.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Arney Akerill of Portland, and a sister, Edith "Dee" Mays of Hoquiam.

Another sister, Mildred "Mid" Lunceford, died before her.

A funeral Mass took place April 24 at St. Phillip Neri Catholic Church in Portland.

Arrangements were by the Aftercare Cremation and Burial Service at Portland.

Memorial donations are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Anna M. Smith - January 20, 1999

Sixty-year Harborite Anna Marie Smith, 63, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, in Grays Harbor Community Hospital after an extended illness.

Mrs. Smith was born Oct. 7, 1935, at Stanley, Wis., to William D. and Bertha F. (Miller) Brandt. Her family moved to Aberdeen when she was about 2 years old, and she attended Aberdeen schools.

On April 9, 1955, she married Charles G. Smith at her mother's home in Aberdeen. The couple made their home in Hoquiam. He died in 1994.

From 1990 to 1993, the Smiths were caretakers at ITT Rayonier's Promise Land Park. They had also traveled to many parts of the United States.

During the late 1970s, Mrs. Smith worked as a dietician and cook for Harbor Health Care in Aberdeen.

She had been employed making coats at the Item House on the Port Industrial Road in the early '70s and before that had worked at the Arctic Circle drive in at Hoquiam, as a ridge nailer in a shake mill near Humptulips and as a maid in area motels.

Mrs. Smith attended Christian Life Fellowship in Aberdeen.

Her interests included word search puzzles, crocheting, knitting, embroidery and collecting "guardian angels." She was an avid bingo player at the Grays Harbor Moose, Hoquiam Senior Center and Trout Unlimited.

Survivors include two daughters, Duryce Ford and Cynthia Schoettler, both of Hoquiam; a son, Douglas Smith of Hoquiam; four sisters, Elizabeth Williams and Venola Werb, both of Aberdeen, Ruth Newquist of Centralia and Persis Phernetton of Westport; a brother, William Brandt of Aberdeen; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A son, Charles G. Jr., died in 1997.

A graveside service is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, in Hoquiam's Sunset Memorial Park.

Arrangements are in care of the Coleman Mortuary of Hoquiam.

Margaret T. Engelhardt - April 22, 1999

OLYMPIA - McCleary resident Margaret Theda Engelhardt, 85, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

She was born July 18, 1913, in Woodsville, N.H., to Lutheria M. Beane. She was raised in New Hampshire, and went to Orford High School in Orford, N.H., then studied to be a registered X-ray technician at Hanover Hospital in Hanover, N.H.

During World War II, she was in the Women's Army Corp in Alaska.

In 1949, she moved to Aberdeen, where she worked for both St. Joseph Hospital and Grays Harbor Community Hospital as an X-ray technician. After retiring, she worked at the Aberdeen YMCA until her health declined.

She married and divorced Bennett Harrison.

In 1965, she married John Engelhardt in Aberdeen. He later died.

She was known for riding her bicycle everywhere. She enjoyed skiing, snow shoeing, ice skating, knitting, reading and walking.

Survivors include a son, Howard H. Harrison of Fullerton, Calif.; a brother, Carroll Beane of Seattle; two granddaughters and two great-granddaughters.

No service is planned.

Phillip Lewis Hawks
August 22, 1963 - July 20, 2015

Phillip was brought into this world August 22, 1963 in South Bend, WA by Dr. Bussabarger. Phillip “Bear” L. Hawks passed away July 20, 2015 at his home in Bay Center, WA. He is survived by his parents Phillip A. and Clara E. Hawks, siblings Kathy and Kenny Rohr, Vicki and Glenn Killingbeck and Ray and Jeri Hawks; nephews Ryan Rohr, Eric Trent, Ethan Hawks, and Chase Huisenga, Brandon and Justen Killingbeck; nieces, Kelli and Leanne Rohr and great niece Leena. He also leaves behind a countless number of great friends and extended family and his special cat, Simone. He was member of the Chinook Tribe.

He was an avid Seahawks fan; he wore out his first Seahawk Jersey (#80 Steve Largent) at an early age. He graduated from South Bend High School in 1981. Phillip was an outstanding football player, earning the Defensive Player of the Year award. He made it to the State Wrestling Tournament at the University of Washington. In earlier years he played Little League, Farm Team and during High School for Bud’s Termites. Phillip also enjoyed participating in South Bend High School Track.

He started working at the age of 8 years old mowing lawns; he worked at Harbor Bell, worked in logging (where he earned the name (“Filthy Phil”) and in construction; commercial clam digging, and 16 years of crab fishing with his brother, Ray. Phillip enjoyed riding quads and motorcycles; most recently he enjoyed gardening. He loved taking care of people and could be counted on to help anyone who needed it. Bear had a wonderful sense of humor and he will be missed.

Arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Ruth L. Kirby - January 27, 1999

SEATTLE - Ruth Louise Kirby, a 13-year resident of South Bend, died Wednesday, Jan. 27, 1999, at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle, after a short illness. She was 74.

She was born Sept. 1, 1924, in Elgin, Ill., to Erin and Ida Mae (Noble) Waterman.

Kirby graduated from high school in Elgin in 1942.

She married Patrick James Kirby in Elgin on June 24, 1944. He survives in South Bend.

She lived in Nielsville, Wis., from 1945 to 1951. She then moved to Tacoma, where she lived until she retired in 1986. After her retirement, she moved to South Bend.

Mrs. Kirby worked as a clerk for The Bon Marche in Tacoma for 18 years.

She enjoyed aerobics and needle work.

She was involved in the Ladies of the Elks, the Willapa Harbor Hospital Auxiliary and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Besides her husband, she is survived by three sons, Tim of South Bend, Pat of Salem, Ore., and Steve of Tacoma; three sisters, Ida Mae Struve of Auburn, Mary Ella Sevier of Salinas, Calif., and Janet Blankenship of Omro, Wis.; and four grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held from 2-5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 1, at the Raymond Elks lodge.

Memorials are requested to the Willapa Harbor Hospital Auxiliary at PO Box 438, South Bend, 98586, or to the Murphy Alliance Fund at 1124 Harrsion St. Raymond, 98577.
