Doris Matilda McGuire

Doris Matilda McGuire, 87, lifetime Aberdeen resident and former secretary at the Grays Harbor Chamber of Commerce and The Morck Hotel, died Saturday, January 25, 2014, at Montesano Health & Rehab Center in Montesano.

Doris was born on May 18, 1926, in Aberdeen, to Fred and Tillie (Thommen) Hepner. She graduated from Aberdeen’s J.M. Weatherwax High School in 1944, and then attended college at Grays Harbor Business School.

On May 18, 1951, Doris married Robert A. McGuire in Elma. He resides at the family home.

Doris worked as a secretary for the Grays Harbor Chamber from 1955, til her retirement in 1961, and before that she worked at The Morck Hotel for 10 years.

She was a member of the Grays Harbor Country Club where she was the Ladies golf division champion for close to 20 years and she was also the Washington State Senior Ladies Champion. Doris loved to play golf and when she had time, more golf. She was a shy person, but she had a lot of friends. She enjoyed spending time on the Hood Canal for summer vacations and going south for the winter to Arizona.

Doris is survived by her husband of 62 years, Robert of Aberdeen; a daughter, Chris Smith of Centralia; a brother, Richard Hepner of Woodinville, Wash.; four grandchildren, Tina Cook of Aberdeen, Jeff Snell, Jr., of Houston, Texas, Theresa Dollins of Missouri and Kevin McGuire of Hawaii; and 10 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Jody Arnsparger; and a brother, Fred Hepner Jr.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Ethel Lang Halgren

Ethel Lang Halgren died Tuesday, January 28, 2014, in Payson, Arizona. Ethel was born in Hoquiam, Wash., November 3, 1919.

She raised her family in Aberdeen and was active in the community until she relocated to Mount Vernon, Wash., in 1966. Ethel was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.

She was preceded in death by sons, Jack Lang and Douglas Lang; and daughter, Julianne Lang Ellsworth. She is survived by Elizabeth Lang Ray (Steve) of Tallahassee, Fla., and Leslie Lang Furubotten (Mike) of Payson, Ariz.; 12 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Interment at Fern Hill cemetery, Aberdeen, Wash.

Daniel Rollin Fairchild

Daniel Rollin Fairchild, 71, passed away in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, on January 30, 2014. He was born on January 16, 1942, in Raymond, Wash., to Art and Eileen Fairchild. The family moved to Seattle in 1943, and to Hoquiam in 1951. Dan graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1961, and attended Grays Harbor College and Western Washington University. After college he lived and worked in the hospitality industry in Honolulu, Hawaii; Eugene, Oregon; Palm Springs, California; and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Dan will be remembered for his sense of humor, his love of sports, especially golf, and the and Seattle Seahawks.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Virginia. He is survived by his sisters, Ann Winter of Olympia, Wash., and Pam McIntosh of Hillsboro, Ore. A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.

Ruth Irene Schefstrom Spinelli Potter

Ruth Irene Schefstrom Spinelli Potter, 85, passed away on January 24, 2014, in Vancouver. She was born on May 8, 1928, in Aberdeen, to August and Eleanor (Olson) Schefstrom. She graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1946, and attended Grays Harbor Junior College and transferred to University of Washington School of Pharmacy where she graduated in 1952. She married Nick Spinelli that year and they moved to Longview. As a pharmacist Ruth worked at Cowlitz General Hospital, Nick Spinelli’s Pharmacy and Longview Apothecary. She was preceded in death by Nick in 1964, and later married Joseph Potter who preceded her in 1999. She was a member of the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum Pharmaceutical Association. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Ruth is survived by five daughters, Dixie Dorsey, Carol Deaton, Debra Weber, Lia Stokes and Deanna Murphy; four sons, John King, Gary Potter, Tony and Nick Spinelli; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by son, Jared Potter; and a sister, Corinne Harmon.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., on Saturday, February 1, 2014, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Stake Center at 11th and Delaware in Longview. In lieu of flowers Memorial Contributions may be made to a local Hospice. A private interment will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Cathlamet. Steele Funeral Home at Longview Memorial Park is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Lee Sparks

Ronald Lee Sparks, a longtime Raymond resident died Sunday, January 26, 2014, peacefully at home with his family by his side after a five year battle with cancer. He was 71. Ron was born February 10, 1942, to Melvin James and Gaynell (Hunt) Sparks.

He was a 1961 graduate of Willapa Valley High School and married his high school sweetheart, Marsha Lignoski on July 29, 1963. They recently celebrated 50 years together; she survives him at the family home in Raymond.

Ron worked for Howard Wood Shake Mill before his career with Weyerhaeuser from which he retired after 37 years in 2008. He enjoyed farming his cattle, hunting, fishing, clam digging, and spending time with his family and friends, especially sharing logging stories with his work crew. Ron was also a huge supporter of Willapa Valley Athletics.

Ron is survived by his wife, Marsha; daughter, Kimberly (Paul) Hines of Snohomish; a son, Christopher Sparks of Graham; and a brother, Ken (Betty) Sparks of Raymond; six grandchildren, Karissa Peters of Kenmore, Amber Hines of Raymond, Ally Hines of Bellingham, and Haylee Hines of Snohomish, Shay Sparks of Aberdeen and Rickey Sparks of Graham; and four great grandchildren, Rylie, Macey, Ashtynn and Angel. Ron is also survived by several nieces and nephews; a brother-in-law, Michael (Patti) of Raymond; and a sister-in-law, Carlene Heintz of Honolulu, Hawaii. He will be greatly missed by his loyal buddy Rudy, the dog. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Bonnie and Rita; and a brother, Leonard.

Memorial Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014, at Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond with a potluck gathering to follow at Raymond Elks Lodge. James Norman (Norm) Smith

James Norman (Norm) Smith passed away on January 19, 2014, in Aberdeen, at the age of 76. Norm was born to Frank Smith and Nancy Orcutt Smith on November 9, 1937. He attended school in Rochester, graduating in June of 1956. While in high school he lettered all four years playing football. Norm joined the National Guard when he was 17 years old and spent 20 years before he retired.

He married Clarice McGiveron in June of 1956, to that union was born three sons, Vern of Grand Mound, Chauncey of Tumwater and Melvin of Montesano. He is survived by one sister of Seattle; two brothers, Cliff of Alabama and Dale of Tenino. He married Donna Hall in March of 1998, and she had four children, Bob of Montesano, Patrina Sims of Missoula, Mont., Mark Hall of Montesano and Heidi Browne of Hoquiam. Norm had several grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also had a Chihuahua dog, Rosie, that he loved dearly.

Norm was employed by Thurston County, as a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1980, after 27 years. In his retirement he had various other employments. Operating two restaurants. The Ham and Egg House in South Aberdeen and the Angler in Westport. He also spent some time driving log trucks and did several short term jobs.

A service will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 1, 2014, at the Montesano Church of God, at 317 Spruce Street in Montesano, Washington.

Jesse Arnold Huglen
March 13, 1981 - February 27, 2015

Jesse Arnold Huglen (Hooligan) was born to Lance and Hilda Huglen on March 13, 1981. He went to be with the Lord on February 27, 2015. Jesse spent his life living and working in the Raymond and South Bend area.

His daughter Jessica was born on July 24, 2006. She was the delight of his life.

Jesse enjoyed riding dirt bikes and watching football, especially the Seahawks. Jesse held the record for home runs in farm team baseball with 21 home runs. He also enjoyed Karaoke. Jesse had a big heart for everyone he met. He met many strangers but they soon became his friends. He also enjoyed cooking for family and friends. We can all attest to his good food.

Jesse volunteered at Habitat House and the food bank. He loved to help others when possible. Jesse was a member of the New Beginnings Wesleyan Church and even had a special chair at the church.

He is survived by his daughter Jessica Huglen, his father Lance Huglen, a sister Carrie and (Matt) Nordin, a brother Darrell Thumm, and niece Sydney Brooks. He was preceded in death by his mother Hilda Huglen.

Memorial donations will be split between funeral costs and his daughter Jessica’s college fund.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015 at the New Life Church, 404 Commercial Street in Raymond, a potluck gathering will follow.

Cremation arrangements were in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Steven A. Hyde

Steven A. Hyde, 51 and a resident of Aberdeen, died on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, in Aberdeen. He was born on March 9, 1962, in Hoquiam, to Noble E. and Vera B. (Hurr) Hyde.

Steven attended the Hoquiam schools and graduated from Hoquiam High School. During high school he had worked for Casa Mia in Hoquiam. Following high school he worked as an apprentice plumber and then as a logger for gypo loggers in the area until retiring due to a accident.

He then became a coach and had coached T-Ball, Pop Warner Football, Double A and Triple A Baseball, Little League Baseball, Girls Fast Pitch and Wrestling. He also coached Girls Fast Pitch at Grays Harbor College.

He loved the outdoors and was called Grizzley Adams. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and hiking. He also liked working with his hands, doing wood working, gardening and cooking.

He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and American Association of Retired Persons.

Steven was married to April Mae Violette in 2010, at Wynooche Wildwood and she survives at the family home. Also surviving is a daughter, Nicole Derk in the US Military; sons, Mark Hyde and Zach Hyde both of Aberdeen; stepson, Eric Menzemer of Olympia; stepdaughter, Aisha Menzemer of Olympia; and a brother, Chris Hyde of Hoquiam.

A Celebration of His Life will be at 5 p.m., on Friday, January 31, 2014, at the Rotary Log Pavilion in Aberdeen.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam.

David Alvin Smith

David Alvin Smith, 66 years of age and a resident of Pacific Beach, Wash., died at his home on January 26, 2014. He was born on September 26, 1947, in Shelton, Washington to Albert George Smith and Zetha Pulsifer and has ten brothers and sisters.

David attended school in Shelton and graduated Shelton High School. Following his graduation he worked for Simpson Timber Company until he entered the US Army on February 14, 1968. He served in Vietnam and received the Purple Heart, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Vietnam Campaign Medal and the Army Commendation with V Device. He was honorably discharged on February 13, 1970.

He came back to the Shelton area and returned to work at the Simpson Timber Company and then he began working for the Department of Social and Health Services with the State of Washington. He next became a self employed commercial fisherman and was last employed as an equipment operator for the Port Blakely Tree Farm until retiring in 2002.

Dave’s hobbies include baseball, golf, going to auctions and estate sales, smoking fish, clam digging, hunting and taking weekend drives.

David is survived by; his sisters, Geneva Underwood, Lori Smith, Verdi McCloud all of Taholah and Josephine Rabuck of Olympia; his brothers, Albert M. Smith, Jacob E. Smith, William Smith, Daniel C. Cush, Jr. all of Shelton, Lloyd A. Smith, Sr. of La Push and Albert G. Smith, Jr. of Taholah. He was preceded in death by his mother, Zetha Cush, his “Gram”, Louise Pulsifer, his parents, Al and Hazel Smith; his step-father, Dan Cush, Sr.; his sister, Susan Smith; his niece, Jody Smith and his nephew, Lloyd Smith, Jr.

A private family memorial service will be held Monday at Coleman Mortuary Chapel and a Celebration of His Life will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, February 3, 2014, at the Community Center in Taholah. Inurnment with military honors will be at the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Alice Arlene Dougherty

Alice Arlene Dougherty made her journey into Jesus arms on January 20, 2014.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wes Dougherty; her father and mother, Joseph and Beatrice Vratanina; and brother, Bill Vratanina. She is survived by children, Candy Jo Blume, Sheri Dougherty Blansett, Wesley Scott Dougherty, Kathy Dougherty, Becky McKinsey, Bill, Kelly, Rocky, Kirk, and Shawn Dougherty; many grandchildren; great and great great grandchildren.

A celebration of life potluck will be held at 3 p.m., Friday, February 7, 2014, at the Elma Grange, 401 Waldrip St., Elma, Washington.

Donald George Kirkpatrick

Don was born February 6, 1928, in Elma, Wash., and passed away peacefully January 24, 2014, at age 85. He was a 1946 graduate of Elma High School, a 1952 graduate of Central Washington College of Education (now Central Washington University) and a Navy veteran.

Don was a 50-year member of the Professional Golfers’ Association and worked at Whidbey Golf Club in Oak Harbor, Puetz Golf Range in Seattle and Earlington Golf Course in Renton. He was known as an excellent teacher of golf. Don’s tournament victories included the 1970 Washington State PGA Match Play Championship and the 1980 Pacific Northwest Senior PGA Championship.

Don was living in Everett at the time of his death.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 63 years, Deloris; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Richard Olafson of Spokane; a son and daughter-in-law, Don Kirkpatrick II and Cheryl Markham of Seattle; a sister and brother-in-law, Muriel and Garnet (Swede) Drury of Kent; a brother-in-law, Allen Caudill of Kendall Park, N.J.; and nephews, a niece, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Karen Kay Sanderson.

A celebration of Don’s life will begin at 10:15 a.m. Monday, February 3, 2014, at Nile Shrine Golf Center, Mountlake Terrace, just west of I-5 at Exit 177 (in the Gold Room). Remembrances may be made to The Association for Frontotemporal Degeneration, www.theaftd.org, or The First Tee of Greater Seattle, www.thefirstteeseattle.org.

Cleva Nelvina Twibell

Cleva Nelvina Twibell, 101, passed quietly Thursday morning, January 23, 2014, at Westhaven Villa in Aberdeen. Cleva was born August 24, 1912, to Grover Cleveland and Minnie Nelvina (Shearer) Allison in Rushville, Mo. The family later lived in Elkhart, Ind., before moving to Atchison, Kan., where she graduated from Atchison High School in 1930. She was the last remaining member of the class.

She went to work at a wholesale merchandising company in Atchison until she followed her husband-to-be, Lynn Twibell of Leavenworth, Kan., to Tacoma, Wash., where they married October 10, 1936. She worked at Brown and Haley Candy Co., rolling Almond Roca and Mountain Bar candies until their children were born.

In 1951, she joined the staff at Puget Sound National Bank, Lincoln Branch, as the safety deposit box teller. She would in later years before retirement in 1978, serve as executive secretary in marketing department in the main offices of the bank.

She and Lynn liked to travel and returned to Kansas often, drove around the US, had been to Hawaii several times and went to the Holy Lands, Greek Isles and Rome in 1978. There were trips in their truck and trailer, around the greater Northwest and many weekends on the coastal beaches digging clams. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Tacoma.

Cleva and Lynn moved to Olympia in 1984. Lynn passed away, January 4, 1992, in Olympia. She continued to live there until health began to close in on her and she came to Aberdeen to live near family.

She is survived by two sons and their wives, Dennis and Linda of Mount Lake Terrace and Douglas and Barbara of Aberdeen; a sister, Ethel Bernice “Neetie” Gorrell of Mesa, Ariz.; and five grandchildren, Carrie Snyder of Chattaroy, Wash., Keith Twibell and wife, Heather of Cosmopolis, Megan Twibell of Chicago, Ill., Paul Twibell of Seattle and Troy Twibell of Kent, Wash.; and also nine great grandchildren.

A time of visitation and memories will be held Thursday, January 30, 2014 from Noon to 6 PM at the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen. A graveside service will be held at 11 AM Friday, January 31, 2014, at Mills and Mills Memorial Park, 5725 Littlerock Rd. SW, Tumwater, WA 98512. Reverend Kent Gravley, pastor of Immanuel Baptist Church, Hoquiam, will officiate.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.
