Cynthia “Cindy” Lee Ortiz

Cynthia “Cindy” Lee Ortiz, 57, longtime Cosmopolis resident passed away Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.

Cindy was born on February 12, 1956, in Aberdeen, to Bletcher J. and Ethel M. (Apfel) Porter. She was a 1974 graduate from Aberdeen Weatherwax High School.

On March 26, 1976, Cindy married the love of her life, “Joe” Dioscoro Ortiz I in Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam. Joe resides at the family home. Cindy worked in Member Services for Costco in Tumwater for many years.

Cindy enjoyed going to casinos, reading and doing puzzles. She also liked to play softball when she was younger and continued to have a love for the game. She was very proud of her children and adored her three granddogs, Buster Bruce, Benni Bee, and Baylah Bear.

Cindy is survived by her husband of 37 years, “Joe” Dioscoro R. Ortiz I of Cosmopolis; a son, “Bubba” Dioscoro R. Ortiz II of Lacey; two daughters, Jolene E. Ortiz and Josie M. Ortiz both of Lacey; seven sisters, Kay, Pat, Kathy, Pam, Rocky, Merri and Jo-Jean; and many nieces and nephews who called her Nana. Cindy was preceded in death by her mother; her father; a brother, BJ; and a sister, Betsey.

There will be a graveside inurnment service for her on Friday, January 31, 2014, at 11 a.m., in the Forest Hill cemetery in Cosmopolis. A reception will follow at The Cosmopolis Lions Club. A message of condolence or of a memory can be left for the family at www.fernhillfuneral.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Judy Lou Lane

Judy Lou Lane, 46 days old, was born December 5, 2013, in Olympia. Lou Lou joined her Great Great Grandma Judy in Heaven on January 19, 2014, from her home in Seattle, where she lived with her Mom, Candi Lane.

Lou Lou was beautiful! With her blue eyes, a button nose and a smile that made you laugh. She loved snuggling with her Mommy and grasping her fingers while she was eating. Looking so deep into her eyes, as if she understood everything Candi was telling her. “Pony … Yippee!”

Lou Lou enjoyed being swaddled by her Grandma Lane and watching the Seahawks with her Papa Chuck and Uncle John Churchill; Also being loved by multiple honorary Grandmas’, Grandpas’, Aunts and Uncles. Uncle, Rick and Aunt, Theresa Mature all of Seattle area.

She is also survived by her Grandpa Russell Brown; Uncle, James; Great Great Grandma, Irene Brown; Aunt Pam and Uncle Tom Pearson, Uncle Darrel Brown, Aunt Nancy and Uncle Don Atwood, Aunt Rachael and Uncle John Benham; Cousin, Jacob Lane, Cousin, Cody House of Grays Harbor area. Great Great Grandpa Bill Lane of Kellogg, Idaho. Aunt Carmen Lane and Aunt Julie McKnight of Olympia. Lou Lou touched so many hearts in her short time with us.

A celebration of her life will be on February 1, 2014, at Westport Inn Hall, 2501 N. Nyhus Westport, WA 12 Noon-4 p.m., in Westport, Washington.

Baby Judy Lou will be joining her Great Great Great Grandma Baldwin and Great Great Grandma Lane in a private setting at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen at a later time.

The family wishes to express our sincere thanks for the flowers and other expressions of love during our time of bereavement. Beautiful memories silently kept of our Baby Lou Lou we loved and will never forget.

Hildred L. Holubar

Hildred L. Holubar, 85, a resident of Hoquiam since 1963, died on Wednesday, January 22, 2014, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Washington. Hildred was born on June 5, 1928, in Pineola, North Carolina to Estes A. and Wilma (Smith) Pyatte.

Hildred was married to Kenneth K. Holubar on September 27, 1949, in Everett, Washington. They moved to Hoquiam in 1963, where she had since resided.

She is survived by her daughter, June Holubar of the family home in Hoquiam and other relatives. Her husband, Kenneth K. Holubar died on January 28, 1985.

Hildred will be buried at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, January 28, 2014, at the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Colleen Nelle (Adkins) Smith

A celebration of life will be held at Polson Museum in Hoquiam at 2 pm, Saturday, February 15, 2014. The family suggest memorials be made to the Railroad Camp exhibit at the Polson Museum, 1611 Riverside Ave., Hoquiam, WA 98550. Colleen and Gene were residents, with their three young children of Railroad Camp during the early years of their marriage. A card of condolence with a message or a memory may be sent to the family at www.colemanmorturary.net. Arrangements were entrusted to Coleman Mortuary of Hoquiam.

Vanis Henry Bush

Vanis Henry Bush, 93, Central Park resident and former Cutterman Foreman at ITT Rayonier, died Sunday February 2, 2014, at Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam.

Vanis was born on April 16, 1920, in Aberdeen to Henry and Sadie (Hughes) Bush. He grew up in Cedarville, Wash. He joined the US Army during WWII and was a Combat Engineer for 3 1/2 years in the Pacific Theater in New Guinea and Luzon. He was Honorably Discharged in January 1946.

Vanis went to work for ITT Rayonier and where he worked as the Cutterman Foreman. He retired at the age of 55. He then did trade work landscaping.

In 1956, Vanis married Lela L. (Mode) Reynolds in Montesano. Lela died in 2010.

Van was an avid fisherman and loved to go hunting when he was younger. He was an avid carver, made boots and chairs and was a jack of all trades.

Van is survived by his daughter, Carol and husband, John Stegen of Woodburn, Ore.; a stepson, Sherman and wife, Peggie Reynolds of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren; and 15 great grandchildren.

A graveside service will take place at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Fern Hill cemetery Mausoleum, Aberdeen.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Ross Jacobus

Ross Jacobus passed on January 26, 2014, in Port Townsend. Ross was born May 21, 1925, in Elma, the youngest child of Robert and Oma (Lewis) Jacobus. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Walter; sisters Erma (Peggy) Jacobus Chapman and Bessie Jacobus-Rall Joliffe, and his wives, Betty Jacobus and secondly, Elizabeth Jacobus, and Thomas Gibbs, who was like a son to him.

Ross graduated from Elma High School in 1942. He was an active participant in school activities. He played the trumpet in the band, lettered in football, and sang with the glee club. This activity set a pattern that would follow him throughout his life as he always had many interests and hobbies. He was active in clubs related to growing bonsai trees and fuchsias as well as model railroads. He enjoyed cooking, particularly Chinese food. The elaborate meals he prepared for family and friends will always be remembered. He won awards related to all of these interests. Woven through his many interests was a constant, abiding passion for music of all kinds. In later years, he enjoyed musical theater and often had season tickets.

He married Betty Marie Gozart also of Elma, and secondly, Elizabeth Loomis of Bothell. He is survived by daughters, Diane Jacobus McHugh (Brett), Debra Jacobus Criscuola (Michael), Sally Jacobus Wilson (Gary), and Kelly Jacobus Larson (Dave); grandchildren, Erin Larson, Jacob Larson, Amy Campbell Loesch (Fritz) and great-grandchildren, Emma and John Loesch. Though he had no sons of his own, his sons-in-law were as dear to him as if they were his own.

After High School, Ross enlisted in the Navy. He served as a stevedore and baker in the Seabees with Battalion 35th Special at Pearl Harbor. After an Honorable Discharge and marriage to Betty, he worked hard for his family. He started with the Standard Oil Barge, then West Coast Wholesale Drug Co., and Sound Business Systems. For many years, in addition to his full time job, he also worked at Longacres Race Track during racing season which meant working seven days a week. On the rare occasion he took a vacation he enjoyed going to the beach for clam digging and road trips to see different parts of the state.

Ross will be remembered for his kindness, curiosity, humor, intelligence and love of friends and family. He will be missed.

A memorial service will be held at Noon on Saturday, February 22, 2014, at Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home in Seattle. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to The Hospice Foundation of Jefferson Healthcare or to a charity of choice.

Charles Henry Carpenter

Charles Henry Carpenter, 87, lifetime McCleary resident and former mill worker at Simpson Door Co., died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, with his children and niece, Sandy at his side, at Puget Sound Health Care in Olympia.

Charles was born on March 3, 1926, in Montesano, to Matt and Inez (Murray) Carpenter. In 1944, Charles joined the US Army and served in the Pacific Theater at New Guinea and Luzon, obtaining the rank of Cpl. as a machine gunner. He was Honorably Discharged in 1950, and returned to McCleary where he worked at Simpson Door until his retirement in 1988.

On May 3, 1949, Charles married Freda Carpenter in Montesano. She passed on January 7, 2013.

Charles was a member of the local carpenters union. He enjoyed going to the casinos and playing the penny machines. He also liked to travel.

Charles is survived by two sons, Howard Boling of Bellingham and Ray and wife, Patsy Boling of McCleary; a daughter, Judy Galloway of Yakima; two brothers, Albert of Bremerton and Herbert Carpenter of The Tri Cities; five grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one great great grandson. Charles was preceded in death by four brothers, Frank, Allen, Matt ‘Bo’ and Billy carpenter; and by two sisters, Adale and Nellie.

There will be a memorial service at the McCleary Community Center on Saturday, February 22, 2014, from 12 to 4 p.m. He will be inurned with his father at the Masonic cemetery of Elma.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen. At his request there will be no service.

Richard “Dick” Green

Richard “Dick” Green, 81, died Monday, March 10, 2014, at Providence St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, with his wife, Mary K., by his side. He was born February 21, 1933, to Hilda and Fenton Green in Chehalis. Dick attended Buckley schools through the 7th grade before moving to South Bend where he graduated from South Bend High School in 1951. Following high school graduation, Dick attended and played football at Grays Harbor College prior to serving in the United States Army.

After returning to South Bend, he was employed by the Pacific County Engineers Office. In 1957, Dick married Mary K. Watts, and they made their home in South Bend and raised their four children. He was appointed Post Master of South Bend by the United States Postal Service, and retired after 28 years. Dick was a retired member of the South Bend Volunteer Fire Department, where he proudly served his community. He was very proud to be a member of the American Legion Honor Guard.

Dick enjoyed everything that Pacific County embodied, including hunting, fishing, clam digging, and even the rain to name a few.

Dick loved to follow his children and grandchildren in their academic and athletic endeavors. He was very proud of the 2010 South Bend State Championship football team, as he was part of the only other undefeated South Bend football team of 1950.

Dick was preceded in death by his mothe; father; brother, Johnny Donovan; and sister, Donna Wetterauer.

Dick is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary K. who resides at the family home in South Bend; as well as his four children, Brian (Kelly) Green of Monitor, Wash., Marla (Steve) Koplitz of Enumclaw, Wash., Ron (Jodi) Green of Buckley, Wash., and Jerry (Laurie) Green of Naselle, Wash.; Papa (Dick) is also survived by his 13 grandchildren, who were the joy of his life.

Memorials may be made to the South Bend Volunteer Fire Department or the Outreach Committee of St. Lawrence Church, P.O. Box 31, Raymond, WA 98577. Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Shannon Leigh Carter

Shannon Leigh Carter, 39, a lifelong Grays Harbor resident died March 16, 2014, in Sequim, Wash.

Shannon was born April 30, 1974, in Aberdeen, to Dell and Shelley Marie (Glenn) Carter. Shannon grew up in Elma and attended Elma High School. She attended Grays Harbor Community College. Shannon worked at a daycare, as a receptionist and was a waitress. She loved animals, reading, scrapbooking and was really good at writing. She always had a listening ear and brought encouragement to others.

Shannon is survived by her parents, Dell and Shelley Carter of Elma; daughter, Jessi Carter of Olympia; sons, Trevon Baker and Riley Rambert of Elma; her sister, Shadel Carter Thompson; and brothers, Jeremy and Jared Carter all of Elma.

A celebration of Shannon’s life will begin at 11a.m., on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Abundant Life Church, 100 Technology Way, Elma, WA 98541, at the Satsop Development Park. The family suggests in lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to a charity of your choice.

Funeral Arrangements are entrusted to Whiteside Family Mortuary in Elma.

Jay Harp

Jay Harp, age 39, a lifetime resident of Hoquiam, died on March 23, 2014, at his home. Jay was born on February 6, 1975, in Aberdeen. He was raised in Hoquiam, graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1994, and had attended Grays Harbor College.

At age eight, he was diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy. For the next 30 years, Jay was able to maintain a positive attitude despite the obstacles that life sent his way. Many will remember him and his ever present smile.

Jay was an avid Seattle Seahawks fan and attended numerous games over the years and had met players including Jim Zorn, Steve Largent, Jacob Green and Brian Bosworth to name a few. He had many signed autographs of team members. He loved shopping, wanting to see everything that he had seen on TV commercials. Activities were important to Jay, having participated in bowling in the Special Olympics, fishing, riding at Hope From Horses in Elma, traveling and ceramics.

Surviving family members include his mother, Karen A. Harp; a brother and his wife, Mike and Lucy Machowek; nieces, Eleanore and Madelynn Machowek; nephew, Erikk Machowek; God mother, Bobbie Marlow; God brothers and sisters, Brad and Carrie Marlow, Joe and Loretta Marlow, Tara and Chris Johnson, Kathy and Jim Brewer and Renae and Al Green. He is also survived by his care providers, Valerie, Judy and Teresa; many friends; and other relatives, not to mention his beloved cats, Boots Boy, B Bob and Bush Kat.

Visitation will be at the Coleman Mortuary on Wednesday and Thursday, March 26th and 27th, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, March 28, 2014, at Our Lady of Good Help Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park. All attending are encouraged to wear their Seahawk gear.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the United Leukodystrophy Foundation, 224 N. 2nd Street, Suite 2, DeKalb, IL 60115 or to Feed the Hungry.

Donald Orrin “Buddy” Danielson

Donald Orrin “Buddy” Danielson, 57 years of age and a longtime Hoquiam, Washington area resident, died on Monday, April 21, 2014, at his home in Hoquiam. He was born on July 18, 1956, in Minot, North Dakota to Donald and Marilyn (Streater) Danielson.

As an infant his family lived in Douglas, North Dakota for five years. They then moved to Glide, Oregon where he attended grade school, to Orting, Washington in 1966 where he attended middle school and to Quinault, Washington in 1968 where he graduated from high school. He later attended Peninsula College in Port Angeles where he earned his associate of arts degree.

As a youth he liked to play football, basketball and go hunting. He helped around the house by chopping wood, mowing lawns, weeding and helping his elderly neighbors to include his Uncle Herbert. While at Quinault he started working in the woods for Don Bell Logging and the forest service. He then worked for Rainy Method to install raw H2O collecting systems. He later worked at Grays Harbor Paper until it closed and was working for Pacific Rim Log Scaling at the time of his death.

He enjoyed traveling and camping with his wife. Their most memorable trips were going to Penrose State Park and Reno. He had also ventured to Walden Pond, Pennsylvania, Alaska, Rhode Island, Utah and Reno. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors, clam digging, oyster picking, duck hunting, surfing and watching his grandchildren play sports. He fondly remembered the times his grandchildren were born, when his son made it into the WWE and walking his daughter down the aisle.

He is survived by his wife, Darlene Jean “Darbi” Danielson of the family home in Hoquiam; his sons, Bryan Danielson of Phoenix, Arizona and Jason Brown of California; his daughters, Billie Sue Deck of Lebanon, Pennsylvania, Jeri Ann Nagala of Hoquiam and Kelly Marlene Sutera of Aberdeen; a brother, Sherman “Lucky” Danielson of Antioch, California; three sisters, Denice Cole of Arden, North Carolina, Earlene McDonald of Cedar Hills, Utah and Glenna Theel of Payson, Utah; six grandchildren and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jim Danielson.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Susie Smith (Butcher)

Susie Smith (Butcher) 61, passed away on Friday, May 16, 2014. She was born to Darel and Lois (Converse) Butcher on November, 25, 1952, in Aberdeen, Wash. She attended Hoquiam schools and was a lifelong Grays Harbor resident.

She enjoyed visiting with friends and family, watching classic films, playing on Facebook and reading biographies. She was an animal lover, and really enjoyed her little dog, Sally. She is survived by her mother, Lois Butcher of Elma; two brothers, Ronald and Gary Butcher of Hoquiam; a sister, Darla Paris of Elma, two sons, John Edward Miller of Hoquiam and Jacob Andrew Smith of Elma.; 3 grandchildren, Zackery, Tony and Carrie Miller of Hoquiam and 1 great-granddaughter, Zyra Miller of Spokane. She was preceded in death by her father, Darel Butcher, who passed in 2008. She possessed a great spirit and strong love for her family and God. You are greatly missed Sweet Susie Q.

A memorial will be held at Harbor Assembly Church in Hoquiam, Wash., at 4 p.m. on May 24, 2014.
