Arnold Otto Skopil

Although Arnold Skopil was born April 14, 1925, in the German region of the new Czechoslovakia, he was a German citizen who had a love for the sport of Soaring ever since he first flew a primary glider in the 1939.

During World War II he flew the Messerschmitt ME-109 over Russia and was eventually shot down and taken prisoner, but was able to escape and make his way back to Germany with his ability to speak three different languages.

After earning his mechanical engineering degree, he answered an ad in the newspaper placed there by Martin Klix, looking for a glider instructor to come to Washington State in order to start a gliding school. After moving to the Bellingham area in 1956 he, Martin and Martin’s two older sons built a two-seat glider from a kit they imported from Germany. Eventually he ended up with the glider, moved to Aberdeen, and put his mechanical engineering talents to work designing and installing a retractable powerplant that allowed him the freedom to self-launch the glider, retract the engine and soar. His passion was flying gliders and developing engines. He later received a patent for his own fuel efficient stratified charge internal combustion engine design.

Arnold retired from Anderson & Middleton logging and saw mills in Hoquiam where he had a long career maintaining their machinery from 1958 until he retired in the late 1980s.

His long creative life ended at the age of 89 on Sept. 17, 2014. He is survived by his younger brother Günther Skopil who still lives in Germany, and his long time close friend Vigh Lambert, with whom he lived for 50 years.

Along with helping around the RV park where he lived, George worked at a restaurant/bar as a prep cook. He was loved and had many friends looking out for him in Westport.

George happily described his life as “another day at the beach.” He also was an avid reader, was part of a book exchange among friends and visited the library often.

George was able to travel back to Toledo, Ore. to attend his sister’s funeral and spend time with family and friends while staying in the home of his daughter, Tami Howard, and her husband Dave Howard. Although George did not feel able to speak at his sister’s funeral, he told his daughter-in-law Linda later that if he had felt capable of doing so, he would have said of Wana Leach, “She was a celebration of life and what a great and glorious sister she was.”

George had the opportunity to spend time with his sister Reba, as well as nieces and nephews and lots of other family and friends before coming home with his son Dale. Dale and his wife Linda provided hospice care for George the last few days of his life.

Along with his son Dale and daughter Tami, George is survived by his sister Reba Letts of Toledo, Ore. and four grandchildren, Courtney Staples, Brandon Gregory, Brittany Gregory and Tasha Van Cleve. George also has nine great grandchildren with two more on the way.

George was preceded in death by his eldest son Brad and his granddaughter Melissa.

George requested that there be no memorial service and we will honor that request. We encourage family members and friends of George to share your fond memories of and experiences with George when you get together.

Per George’s request, he will be cremated and his ashes sprinkled in the ocean off Newport, Ore., where other family members have gone before him.
