Donna Tveit

Wife, mother, grandma, great-grandma and friend to many, Donna Tveit passed away peacefully at her home on Nov. 9, 2011.

Born Madonna Louise on April 12, 1930 to Alice (Beyer) and Harold Courrier in Fairbault County, Minn., she was raised on the family farm with her sister, Grace and her brother Edward. Shortly after graduating from Kiester High School in 1947, Donna moved to Wells, Minn. to work as a bookkeeper for Musser Poultry Plant.

During a dance, in the summer of 1949, she met her future husband Orvin Tveit. They were married June 8, 1950 in Lake Mills, Iowa. After the wedding, they spent the summer at Randle Ranger Station in Washington state and then returned to Minnesota so Orv could finish his degree at University of Minnesota.

Donna and Orv returned to the Northwest in 1951 with their six month old son Don and settled in Centralia, Wash. Donna kept busy raising her three children Don, Steve and Patty and when they entered school, she began work at Perry Brothers Pultry plant. Even though she worked full time, she was an avid supporter in her children's sports and other activities. The family enjoyed spending many weekends camping with friends.

When their children graduated from high school, Donna and Orv moved to Issaquah and later Woodinville where she worked for O'Brien Skis (later owned by Coleman). After retiring, Donna and Orv lived at their home on Mayfield Lake. By then, they were following their grandchildren's activities with the same enthusiasm as their children's. They returned to Centralia in 1998.

Wherever she lived, Donna made friends with neighbors and co-workers and loved to entertain them in her home. Always willing to help people, Donna opened her home to friends and family over the years who needed a place to stay. She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, cook (she rarely left home without her bag of cookbooks) and was an avid bridge player; she always managed to find a group to play with wherever she lived. Along with her husband, Donna made annual trips to Minnesota and spent winters in Arizona.

Donna was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and had recently joined the Women's Auxiliary at Legion Grant Hodge Post 17.

Donna was preceded in death by Orv, her husband of 60 years, son, Steve and brother Ed Courrier. She is survived by her son, Don (Billie) Tveit of Forest Grove, Ore., daugther, Patty (Jack) Dennis of Bothell, Wash., daughter-in-law, Gina Tveit of Colville, Wash., grandchldren Elizabeth Tveit, Mark Tveit, Jeff (Melina) Dennis, Emily Tveit and Alex Tveit; great-granddaughter Bailey Dennis and sister, Grace Neibuhr of Wells, Minn. The family would like to thank Providence Hospice along with a special thanks to Denise McCallister, caregiver of Donna and Orv, whose help allowed them to remain in their home.

Services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 1209 N. Scheuber Rd, Centralia, WA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that remembrances be made to Immanuel Lutheran Church building fund.

Matthew Brian Ritchey

Matthew Brian Ritchey (50) passed away unexpectedly at Providence St. Peters Hospital, October 22, 2011. Matt was born on December 10th to Dan and Lillian Ritchey in Chehalis, Wash. He was the youngest of three children and a lifetime resident of Rochester, Wash.

He graduated from Rochester High School then went on to be a member of Local #252 Laborers Union for 32 years. He was a lifetime member of the NRA, avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, and “stomping” his trucks. He was well known for his mechanical skills, his love for animals (especially his dogs), playing his guitar loudly, and eating. He was always fashionably late to friends poker gatherings where his constant side bets and the phrase “And a quarter”, were his trademarks. His greatest attribute was his willingness to always help his friends.

Matt is survived by his brother Alan (Sharon), his sister Jessilee (Dan), two nephews, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.

A potluck memorial for Matt will be held on Sunday November 27, 2011 at 2 p.m. in Rochester, Wash. at Swede Hall. Matt’s family and friends ask that any donations be made to your local Diabetes Foundation in Matt’s name. Matt will be interned at Grand Mound cemetery next to his parents following a private graveside service for family and close friends.

Richard Louis (Louie) Most
December 14, 1938 - November 12, 2011

Richard (Louie) Most passed away on Nov, 12, 2011, with his family by his side, after a short battle with cancer. He was born on December 14, 1938 in Chehalis, Wash. to Richard Oscar Most and Wanda Bernice McMillan Most. Louie grew up in Chehalis, graduated from high school, joined the Navy and became a radar specialist. Louie worked for NASA for over five years, involved in the Pacific Missile Range Project on missile tracking ships and also handled satellite radar for the Apollo Project. Louie taught himself computer programming. He knew this was an area where he could succeed, especially as his blindness was progressing (diagnosed with Retinitis Pigmentosa in his early twenties). He worked for USWest (Century Link) for many years as a data technician and retired as a senior software engineer.

Louie generously gave of his time and knowledge to the blind community. He wrote accessibility software programs for a five-state conglomeration of Midwest library systems, general on-line blind lists and the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver, Wash. He spoke to the students at the school, hoping to inspire them to become software engineers, as well as wrote programs to make their entry into software engineering more accessible. Louie was truly an inspiration to all he met.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Richard L. Most to the Washington School for the Blind Foundation, 2214 E. 13th Street, Vancouver, WA 98661.

Louie is survived by his brother, Neil Most of Chehalis; his wife, Patricia Ann Most of Camano Island; his five children, Julie (Scott) Curtis, Tammi Sue Hartman, Jason Most, Sarawanda (Tim) Hansen, Richelle Reed; and 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. This blessed and inspirational man was dearly loved and will truly be missed.

A memorial service and potluck will be held on Saturday, Nov. 26th at 2 p.m. at the Lost Lake Club, 1469 Lake Drive, Camano Island, WA 98282.

Pastor Glenneith (Glenn) Derville Burgess

Pastor Glenneith (Glenn) Derville Burgess, 67, was called home, into the presence of our Lord, Jesus Christ, on 11-19-2011 while under care at St. Peters Hospital in Olympia, Wash.

Pastor Burgess was born in Sugartown, La., on July 12, 1944, to Wiley and Dotty Burgess and spent his childhood years in that area, where his father, Reverend Wiley Burgess was pastor of Welcome Church, a country church located near DeRidder, La. He attended high school in Oakdale, La., and met his Cajun sweetheart, Rose Marie Fontenot from the neighboring town of Mamou during this period; they were married shortly thereafter.

Pastor Burgess was born again, receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost, on July 3, 1967. The Lord called him to the ministry within a year of that time. He spent the first few years of his ministry in Jennings, La., and Highlands, TX under the leadership of Pastor Jerry Solomon. In 1972, he became Pastor in Waynesboro, Mich.

The Lord called Pastor Burgess to the state of Washington and he arrived Jan. 1, 1975. He became Pastor of a small congregation in Centralia, Wash., in 1976. During this time he worked in his trade as a pipefitter/welder and directed all his resources toward pastoring and evangelizing the Centralia/Chehalis area. The congregation soon outgrew its small building, and built a new building at its current location, Jesus Name Pentecostal Church, on Bishop Rd. in Chehalis. He pastored this congregation for 33 years until his retirement in July 2009.

He is remembered by those closest to him, his family and loved ones, as a great man of God. He deeply loved his wife and children and his delight was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a compassionate man with a great love for people. He held earthly things and material possessions in low esteem because God, and the eternal things of God, meant everything to him. He deeply loved his brother and sisters also. For him, nothing was more important than his family.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rose, his son, Shannon Burgess and daughter Carla Daily, his twin brother, Bill, his sisters, Delta Fay Ashworth, Kay Clark, and Stephanie Bigner, as well as six grand children and two great-grand children.

His final wish was for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to meet him just inside the Eastern Gate.

Visitation may be made between the hours of 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, Friday, Nov. 25 at Jesus Name Pentecostal Church.

A funeral service for Pastor Glenn Burgess is scheduled to begin at 11:00 AM, Saturday, Nov. 26 at Centralia College Corbet Theater.

Interment is scheduled for 11:00 AM, Monday, Nov. 28 at Claquato cemetery, Chehalis.

Ruth Minton Beresford

Ruth Minton Beresford was born Nov. 5, 1919, to Stella Ruth (Fite) and Joseph Marion Minton, in Houston, Texas, where she spent her early years.

She graduated from what is now Rice University in Houston in 1941, majoring in English, with a biology minor. She then taught fourth grade for a year in Galena Park, Texas, before taking the position of Director of Girl Scouting in Paris, Texas. In 1945 she became the Girl Scout Executive Director in Amarillo, Texas. Though she treasured the memories the rest of her life, Ruth left her career in Girl Scout administration in 1948, moving to Pasadena, Calif. with her new husband Robert Beresford. She later acquired a California state teaching credential and began a second very rewarding career teaching Adult Education classes in 1970 to parents of pre-schoolers, through Pasadena City College.

Both Ruth and Bob were very active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Pasadena for over 60 years. Following Bob’s death in January of 2009, Ruth began a new chapter in her life, moving to be with her son Rex Beresford’s family in the parsonage of Boistfort Community Church. Ruth blessed everyone who knew her, as she provided her warmth, love, and a broad smile to all who came near. Did I mention the puns? You had to be on your toes, because you really couldn't have a conversation with her without provoking her wry sense of humor. She was truly loved, and is truly missed.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Bob. She is survived by her brother, Joseph Paul (wife, Nancy) Minton, of Potomac Falls, VA; daughter, Robin (Robert Garner) of San Jose, Calif.; sons Rex (Gayle), of Boistfort, Wash., and Richard (Chris) of Bayside, Calif., as well as ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

There will be a memorial celebration at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, November 19, 2011 at Boistfort Community Church. Memorial donations may be made to the Sanctuary Window Fund.

Dave Sherwood

Dave Sherwood, age 56, died Friday, Nov. 11, 2011 as a result of an accidental fall during an elk hunting trip. He was born on March 2, 1955, to Gene and Carole Sherwood in Centralia.

Dave is survived by his wife of 30 years, Sue, his sons, Eric (girlfriend Karisa), Jason (wife Heather) and Keith (wife Jacque). He is also survived by his grandchildren Jacob, Elaun, Chance, Hannah, David, Grace, Tori and Trent, his brother Rob (wife Brenda, nephews Kelly and Casey), his mother Carole, and his first wife Pam May. He was preceded in death by his father Gene and his brother Mike.

Dave enjoyed many outdoor activities, watching his grandkids at sporting events, and spending time with Sue. He will be greatly missed by his large extended family, his many friends and his co-workers. His family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the businesses and the many volunteers who searched for Dave and would not quit until he was found.

There will be a graveside service at Alpha cemetery on Centralia-Alpha Road in Onalaska at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20th. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewis County Literacy Council, 600 West Locust Street, Centralia.

James E. (Mike) Morris

We lost a very special member of our family and community on Nov. 9, 2011. Following a long illness, at age 65, Mike died at home while being cared for by his wife, large extended family and the Providence Hospice staff, for several months. This just proved to us all how great a man he was. Everyone helped out to keep him comfortable and assuring him he was loved by all. Mike was born Nov. 3, 1946 in Toledo, Ore., to Robert James (Bob) Morris and Rosalie Velleda (Babe) Finch Morris. Mike married Joye Schrader on Feb. 20, 1970 and celebrated 41 years of marriage. He lived in the Grand Mound/Rochester area for most of his life, coming from Oregon prior to that.

Mike is survived by his wife Joye, two sons James Travis (Bridget) Morris Centralia, and William Frank (Brooke) Morris Tucson, Ariz., five grandchildren Caitlynn, Cody, Emily, Connor and Jaeric. Mike's five siblings also survive him, Peter Mercer, Port Townsend, Connie Zurfluh (the late Fred) of Centralia, Jay Morris (Bev), Kelly Apperson (John), Kode Morris (Dayna) all of Rochester, numerous nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, two aunts, two uncles and cousins also survive him. His parents and one brother-in-law preceded him in death.

Mike started working as a youngster on his parents farms and was drafted into the US Army in the mid 60's. After discharge from the Army, he married Joye. They were self-employed in many endeavors including building logging roads, dairy farming, beef farming, two small gas stations, cattle hauling and the last being Morris Bros. Inc. for over 25 years with his brother Kode and son Travis. He loved to work and see progress in everything he did. His family (he was a super husband, father and Papa), business, home and restoring old tractors and cars were his passions in that order. He had high expectations for his sons, daughter-in-laws and grandchildren and encouraged them to push themselves to be successful in life.

Mike will be missed tremendously by many but we know he is drinking coffee with his parents, in-laws and good friends and they are probably restoring an old Dodge or working on a John Deere tractor and enjoying it all.

A memorial celebration of his life will be held at The Swede Hall in Rochester on Friday, Nov. 18, 2011 at 2 pm. We would like you to share a short memory that you have of Mike.

Marjorie Jean Stevens

Marjorie Jean Stevens was born Nov. 7, 1910, to Eugene Wingate Stevens, M.D., and his wife, Ethel Jessie McClarty Stevens, in Dryad, Wash. Dr. Stevens was a much-loved physician who served the people of Pacific County for many years. He and Ethel operated a drug store and pharmacy in Doty, Wash., where they moved when “Jean”, as she was always known, was very small. Jean was the third child born to Dr. and Mrs. Stevens. They also had a son, Edgar. A daughter, Helen had passed from this life a year before Jean was born.

Jean graduated from Doty High School, and attended Oregon State College for two years. She met George W. Lyle in 1933. They were married on May 16, 1933, and settled on a small farm near Frances, Wash., where they lived for six years, before moving to Doty.

Their first child, Helen Mary, was born on Oct. 17, 1936. A second child, George Eugene, was born on Aug. 19, 1941. They subsequently moved to Chehalis, Wash., where they lived for the rest of their lives together.

Jean was a homemaker for many years; she later worked for the City of Chehalis Water Department, and was appointed City Treasurer, a position she held until her retirement 23 years later. (She liked to tell family and friends that when she retired, the City of Chehalis replaced her with two employees and a computer!)

Her beloved George passed from this life the day after their 46th wedding anniversary in 1980. Jean remained in their family home until failing health caused her to move into an assisted-care facility in Beaverton, Ore. In her final years, she was gently cared for, most especially by her loving daughter-in-law, Miki Lyle.

She passed from this life peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Nov. 13, 2011. She had attained the age of one hundred and one years and six days.

Jean is survived by her children, nine grandchildren and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouse, her brother and three great-grandchildren.

Jean Lyle led a full and active life. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star for more than fifty years, a member of First Methodist Church of Chehalis for many years, and was active in her garden club for many years as well. She delighted in being a grandmother, baking and sewing for and sharing many hours with her grandchildren.

We have wonderful recollections of her and are glad that she can now rest with our Lord. Thanks for all the memories, Mom.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Jean’s memory to the Chehalis United Methodist Church, PO Box 417, Chehalis, WA 98532.

John A. Myer

John A. Myer, 85 of Onalaska was called home by the Lord Dec. 28, 2011 at Providence Centralia Hospital surrounded by family. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Chehalis for 38 years; a member of an historic homesteading Alpha Prairie family; a beloved father, papa, teacher and friend.

A celebration of his life will be held Jan. 20, 2012 at 1:00 P.M. at First Baptist Church, 1866 South Market Boulevard, Chehalis, WA. A reception will be held at the church immediately following the service.

In place of flowers, people are urged to make donations to the John Myer Scholarship Fund at any Security State Bank branch.

Mr. Myer was born July 21, 1926 in Centralia to John and Agnes Myer of Alpha, Wash. His family was a founding force in the Alpha Prairie farming and forestry community. His grandfather Theodore Myer homesteaded in the area in 1869.

He enjoyed nearly 60 years of marriage to the love of his life, Mary (Extine).

He graduated from Onalaska High School in 1944. After serving in the US Navy during World War II, he received an Associate Arts Degree from Centralia College in 1946. He graduated in 1950 from Washington State University with bachelor degrees in education and agriculture.

In 1944, Mr. Myer enlisted in the US Navy. The majority of his service was on the light cruiser, USS Mobile. His ship was noted for its participation in the Pacific island campaign and as one of the first US ships to repatriate prisoners of war held in Japan. He was also part of a contingent of sailors detailed to view the effects of the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. He also served aboard the USS Barr, a high-speed transport ship.

Mr. Myer taught agriculture and biology at Onalaska High School from 1950-1968. One of his greatest pleasures was working with students to help them achieve academic and personal success. He was also advisor for the local chapter of the Future Farmers of America. He served on the board of directors of the Washington State Association of the FFA; leadership roles in the Washington State Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association; and was awarded the degree of Honorary State Farmer by the FFA.

He joined the faculty of Centralia College in 1968 to inaugurate the school’s farm management program. He assisted farmers in five Southwest Washington counties to become more effective in the financial management of their operations. These farmers benefited from his assistance and became fast friends.

Mr. Myer left Centralia College in 1983 to become manager of the Grand Mound branch of South Sound National Bank (now Key Bank). He also held the titles of Assistant Vice President and Agricultural Loan Officer for the bank.

In 1985 he joined the Lewis County Conservation District to serve as an animal waste specialist. He once again reveled in his partnership with local farmers, assisting them in the development of animal waste control systems, primarily for dairy farms, which reduced nonpoint water pollution. While working at the LCCD Myer was awarded the conservation volunteer of the year in 2003.

He judged a variety of agricultural entries for many years at the Southwest Washington and Pacific County Fairs; volunteered to judge the Lewis County Dairy Princess competition; led an FFA youth tour of Europe, and coached youth sports teams, activities he greatly enjoyed.

In 2005 he left LCCD to begin a well-deserved retirement with his wife, Mary. They enjoyed traveling together to other parts of the US and overseas to Europe.

He put the same passion he had for teaching into his care and love for his family. Although physical ailments slowed him physically later in his life, he showed true delight in being visited by former students and associates.

John Myer is survived by his wife Mary of Onalaska; his children, Eric Myer of Onalaska- grandchildren Aaron, Elaine, Joe, Frazier, and Sarah- great grandchild Sophia; Janet Myer and her husband Don Morley of Marysville- grandchildren John, Jessica and Joey Clift; Joel Myer and wife Bonnie of Tumwater; Margaret Myer Petersen of Chehalis- grandchild Dana Ecklund; and Adam Myer and wife Patty of Chehalis- grandchildren Alex and Olivia.
