Penelope (Penni) Mathias Muller
June 11, 1945-Jan. 12, 2012

Penni was born in Santa Monica, Calif. on June 11, 1945 to Charles (Don) and Marian Mathias. Her siblings included Janette, Don and Mathew. The family later on moved to Goleta, Calif., where she graduated from San Marcos High in 1963. She went on to Santa Barbara City College and then to San Francisco State College for her degree. While taking post-graduate courses at UCSB and working at Bray's Restaurant, she met her future husband Joe. They were married on Dec. 12, 1970. In 1972, they moved to Washington State where she immediately found out what rains, snow, sunless days and the Muller family was like. Through her work at Assured Home Health and at the Lewis County Courthouse, she met many people who became lifelong friends. In 1984, she and Joe moved back to California and settled in Camarillo. She started to work at Pleasant Valley Hospital and was in the human resource department for 26 years, and again made many friends among her associates.

As a child, Penni loved to go camping and traveling with her parents. Always adventuresome, her pets were snakes, mice and a monkey named Gomez. She continued enjoying camping and she and Joe took their first trip in an Oldsmobile Cutlass through eight states, loaded down with camping gear and eleven year old Mike jammed into the back seat. The night in New Mexico during a thunder storm, we discovered why everyone else had dug a trench around their tents. They later on tubed down the Kern River in Bakersfield, went on a swamp boat in Louisiana Bayou and hiked up the Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Her favorite place was in the Indian Country, hiking to cliff dwellings or taking open air tours with the Indian guides.

Although the last few years of her life was hard on her and changed the rest of life here on earth, she left many lasting memorable times in our hearts. She was preceded in death by her father and brother Don. She leaves behind her husband Joe, son Mike, sister Jan, brother Matt, mother Marian and her extended Muller family.

She will be loved and missed always by those who knew her.

Kathleen Teresa (Carty) "KC" Pea

Kathleen Teresa (Carty) Pea, 96, died peacefully Monday, March 12, 2012 at Providence Centralia Hospital with family members present. "KC", as she was known since childhood, was of strong Irish lineage. Her parents, James Carty of Dublin, and Anna Marie (McFall) Carty of Belfast, came to New York City on their honeymoon in 1907. When their luggage was temporarily lost, they came west to stay with James' cousin at his Blackwater Ranch in Ridgefield, which is now part of the Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge. Their luggage eventually arrived but they never returned to Ireland. After a short time in Ridgefield, they moved to Napavine, where KC was born on January 21, 1916 at the family home on Haywire Road.

Growing up in Napavine, KC attended Napavine Schools and was a member of the graduating class of 1934. Prior to her death, she had achieved the recognition of being the oldest living graduate of Napavine High School. On June 18, 1936, she married her high school sweetheart, Loyle Pea. They were married just shy of 50 years. Together they raised five children, Patricia Anne, Michael James, Mary Ellen, Kathleen Teresa and James Carty.

KC was disappointed when she learned recently she would not realize her strong desire of living to be 100 years old. But she spent the last week of her life surrounded by her large family, reminiscing about her 96 years, telling stories and joking. She remained mentally sharp until the last few hours. She had seen and done many things during her long life. She traveled extensively, having visited nearly all of the contiguous 48 states, many of them several times, as well as Mexico and the east and west coasts of Canada. She attended Worlds Fairs in Seattle in 1962, New York City in 1964, Spokane in 1974 and Vancouver BC in 1986.

KC was an avid swimmer, walker and bicycle rider, continuing all into her later years. As a teenager, she dove from bridges with the boys, and at age 79, she took a ride on a wave runner on Mayfield Lake. She was an avid fan of the Seattle Supersonics and along with her husband enjoyed many senior center bus trips to their games.

She was active in community and politics. She served on the Napavine Planning Commission and as Democratic Precinct Committee woman for many years. She served on local election boards well before and after automated voting came about. Her involvement in politics allowed her to "rub elbows" as she would say, with many important people. She attended teas with governors and members of Congress. During her life she saw two U.S. presidents in person. In 1960, she saw President Eisenhower along with the Shah of Iran in Washington, D.C. In 1996, during the historic campaign visit to Centralia by President and Mrs. Clinton and Vice President and Mrs. Gore, she was in attendance and was excited to meet ABC News icon Sam Donaldson.

KC was a lifelong supporter of Napavine schools and Napavine Tiger athletics. She attended the state championship football game in 1976 and had traveled to Spokane to watch the Tigers in state basketball tournaments. For many years she was in attendance at the sporting events of her children and grandchildren, including traveling to state fastpitch tournaments in Eastern Washington in her late 80s. She was a founding member of the Napavine Booster Club, and a longtime PTA member. There are currently three of her great-grandchildren in the Napavine school system.

In recognition of her longtime residency and service to Napavine schools and community, she was honored as Grand Marshal of the Napavine Fun Time Festival Parade several years ago.

KC was also a long time supporter of Lewis County Fire District #5. For many years she worked at the annual Fireman's Ball.

KC was a devout and active member of her Catholic faith. She was a member of St. Agnes Parish in Napavine, the St. Pascal Altar Society and Parish Council at Sacred Heart Parish in Winlock, and in later life St. Joseph Parish in Chehalis. As a result of her commitment to her faith and her enthusiastic support of youth, St. Joseph School in Chehalis will be the benefactor of her estate.

KC was preceded in death by her husband, Loyle, in 1986 and daughter, Pat Pancake, in 2009. Also by brothers Kevin and Leo Carty, sisters Anne Marie Close and Eileen Albrecht, as well as twin siblings at birth. Also preceding her were sons-in-law David Pancake, Sr. and David Reynolds, Sr., and sister-in-law Amy Carty.

She is survived by daughters, Mary Ellen Pea and Kathleen "Bunny" Reynolds of Napavine, sons Mike (Jeanne) Pea of Ethel and Jim (Wendy) Pea of Napavine; sister Patricia Carty of Lake Oswego, Ore.; sister-in-law Iris Carty of Portland, Ore.; 23 grandchildren, over 50 great-grandchildren (another due in July); 10 great-great-grandchildren (another due this month), and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services for KC are under the direction of Cattermole Funeral Home in Winlock. Viewing times are Friday, Saturday and Sunday between 9 A.M. and 5 P.M. A rosary and vigil service will be held at Cattermole at 5:30 Sunday, March 18.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 P.M., Monday, March 19 at historic St. Francis Mission, 139 Spencer Rd., Toledo, the same church in which KC and Loyle were married nearly 76 years ago. Burial will follow at Napavine cemetery, followed by a potluck reception at Napavine Rebekah Hall. Those attending are encouraged by the family to wear a bit of green in recognition of KC's proud Irish heritage.

The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate care of the staff at Providence Centralia, especially KC's favorite nurse, "Sam" Lauster. The family would also like to acknowledge the professional care by members of Lewis County Fire District 5, who transported her several times over the past few years, especially firefighter/EMT Brad Bozarth who was always extremely pleasant, humourous, professional and caring.

Remembrances may be in the form of donation to Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Washington Chapter, 520 Pike Street, Suite 1075, Seattle, WA, 98101-3909. This is a cause that was dear to KC, as it directly affects three of her great-grandchildren.

Virginia Leah Boyd "TuTu"

On March 9, 2012 Virginia left her earthly home to share her infectious personality with the community of heaven. She was born in Chehalis on the first day of spring, March 20, 1941 to Charles and Marie Dunn. She was a lifelong Centralia resident and graduated from Centralia High School in 1959. She married Denny David in 1959 and had three children: Ann, Mary, and Kirk. Later, as a single mother, she worked for Weyerhaeuser and met Charlie Boyd. They married in 1979 and with Charlie, she gained another son, Brandon Boyd. They moved the family to the countryside to live out Virginia’s glamorous dream of being a farmer. Virginia retired in 2007 after many years working in the probation department of Lewis County District Court.

Virginia was also a member of the “In Stitches” quilt group and considered its members and all of her countless friends to be an extension of her family.

Virginia had numerous hobbies and many items still on her “bucket list”. She especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends, quilting, gardening and growing flowers for weddings and for the farmer’s market and taking care of animals on the farm. She also enjoyed riding her bicycle around town and frequent swimming dates with her beloved grandchildren.

Virginia is survived by her mother Marie Dunn of Centralia, husband Charlie Boyd of Centralia and her children: Ann (Steve) Latimer, Mary (Myrl) Brown, Kirk (Angie) David and Brandon (Marinda) Boyd. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Hannah (Boone), Griffen, Tate, Max, Chloe, Dru, Jake, Josh, Bryson, Rebekah and Lillian, niece Allison (Rinear) Glover and family friend Linda Meyer.

A celebration of life for Virginia will be held on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Centralia. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church or to the Project Linus quilt group which was very dear to her heart. Donations can be left at the church or mailed to the First United Methodist Church, 506 S. Washington Ave., Centralia, 98531. Arrangements are being assisted by Newell-Hoerling’s Mortuary.

To say that Virginia will be missed is an understatement, but we know that she is singing in the heavenly choir and busy tending the gardens of her new home in heaven. Her strong spirit waits there, ever joyful for her family and friends.
