Larry Cecil Pickett
Sept. 21, 1941 – March 26, 2012

Larry was born in Oxford, Neb. on Sept 21, 1941 to Cecil & Violet Pickett. He grew up in Pavillion, Wyo., the second of five children. He attended a small country schoolhouse where he was free to ride his horse, Babe, to school. Following his high school graduation, he entered the United States Air Force at McConnell AFB, Kansas, in June 1960, where he served as a small arms instructor & drillmaster until his honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant in June 1968. He then joined his brother & best friend, Vaughn, at the Lucky Mc Uranium Mine in Gas Hills, Wyo., until May 1973, when he relocated to Centralia, Wash. His career continued in mining at WIDCO (Washington Irrigation & Development Company), where he held a number of different positions in the coal mining operation, culminating as one of two dragline operators until his retirement in January 2007. Retirement didn’t agree with Larry – he filled the hours with part-time jobs & indulged his passion of farming twice each year when he returned to work with his family at Campbell Livestock, located in Missouri Valley, between Riverton & Shoshoni, Wyo.

Larry is best-known for his willingness to help those around him, from family & friends, to the unknown stranger. He loved family gatherings surrounded by his family, kids, grandkids & friends, especially Sunday game night where he recently won the final family game of Sequence – with only limited cheating. He was a master at mechanical things – from fixing cars, to lawn mowers, hair dryers & radios. Each morning began as “coffee” with his buddies; in the “old” days it was at King Solomon’s & most recently at The Restaurant. This tradition continued while in Wyo. where he met with his family & his new set of buddies at the Trails Head in Riverton. Larry loved his quiet times sitting in the recliner with a good western, the news, & his beloved felines.

On March 2, 2012, Larry & his family received the devastating news that his life was to be cut short by pancreatic cancer. Over the next 3 weeks, Larry valiantly fought this unforgiving disease & was surrounded by his family & friends who joined the fight because of their immense love for him. He passed away on March 26, 2012 at home in Centralia. Larry is survived by his mother, Violet Pickett, Riverton, Wyo.; life partner of 32 yrs, Virginia Pickett, Centralia, Wash.; children, Carrie (Kevin) Sieler, Federal Way, Wash.; Theresa Thomas, Centralia, Wash.; Jeffrey Pickett, Centralia, Wash.; Angela “Elmer” (J.T.) Goode, Centralia, Wash.; siblings, Vaughn Pickett, Riverton, Wyo.; Edd Pickett, Shoshoni, Wyo.; Steve Pickett, Casper, Wyo.; Sherry Pantle, Encampment, Wyo.; grandchildren, Nikki Hill Stephens, Tacoma, Wash.; Amanda Sieler, Tacoma, Wash.; Jace Thomas, Centralia, WA; Levi Pickett, Centralia, Wash.; Shelby Thomas, Centralia, Wash.; Megan Pickett, Elma, Wash.; Evan Thomas, Centralia, Wash.; great-grandson, Shane Hill, Tacoma, Wash.; beloved felines, Porky, Cecil & Ginger; & other family & friends, too numerous to mention.

The family extends its sincere gratitude to the staff of the VAPSHCS – Seattle Division, & most especially to Laurie McGee, ARNP, & Renee Francis, LPN, VA Chehalis CBOC. Appreciation & gratitude is also extended to Assured Home Hospice for their tender loving care. Donations may be made in Larry’s name to the American Cancer Society.

A Celebration of Life is planned & will be announced at a later date.
