Beverly Nichols

Beverly J. Nichols, a resident of Aberdeen, died Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 57.

She was raised in Las Vegas and had worked as a cocktail waitress at the Showboat Casino and later as a bartender.

A private celebration of her life has been held.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

James Perry

James R. Perry, a resident of Hoquiam, died on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015, at his home. He was 62.

He had worked as a shingle sawyer for various companies on the Harbor.

A celebration of his life is being planned and will be announced in a later edition of The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Joanne Coker

OLYMPIA — Longtime Montesano resident Joanne Coker died Tuesday Jan. 13, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. She was 77.

A service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday at the Montesano Assembly of God Church.

Arrangments are by Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Terry Dianne Whitlock

Terry Dianne Whitlock, age 65, passed away Dec. 30, 2014, at University of Washington Hospital from vascular complications.

Terry was born in Aberdeen on Sept. 11, 1949, to Louise and Gordon Graham.

In 1965 she married Terry O. Thompson, they later divorced. In 1979 she married Jose Sanchez. He passed away in 1981. On July 13, 1982, she married Patrick Whitlock. He survives at the family home in Aberdeen.

She attended Ocosta School District and worked delivering for The Daily World, as conservation employee for the Mill Creek Park in Cosmopolis and as a transport driver delivering vehicles.

She enjoyed going to the beach, camping, crafting, collecting, driving, garage sales, playing pool, and spending time with her friends and family.

She is survived by her children, Tanya and her husband Greg Gitchel, Terry (Dean) Thompson and Carolyn (Kizzy) Sanchez-McMahan, all off Aberdeen, and a step-daughter, Shannon Whitlock-Jackson of Lakewood.

Her daughter Tammy Thompson-Anderson passed away in 2011.

She is also survived by her brothers, Gordy (Bernadine), David, Daryl (Patty), Lance, Steve, Gary (Tammy) and Arvid (Tammi) Graham; her sister Judy (Tom) Simera; her grandchildren, Gregory, Gordon, Elizabeth Gitchel, Nathan Anderson, Kenny Thompson, Arvid, Louise, Clayton Anderson, Terry, Tyler, Tiffany Thompson, Courtney McCormick, Mason McMahan and Rory Messer.

She had 10 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Louise Graham, her daughter Tammy Thompson-Anderson, brother’s Scott and Kenneth (Boo) Graham and a sister, Sherry Jones.

A potluck celebration of her life is being planned for Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015, at the Ocosta Recreation Hall at 1 p.m.

Cremation is under the care of Cascade Memorial of Federal Way.

Calvin R. Bryant

A celebration of life for Elma resident Calvin Ray Bryant, who died on Jan. 6, 2015, will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Elma Eagles Club.

Arrangements were by McComb & Wagner Funeral Home in Shelton.

Roberta “Bobbie” DeNotta

A celebration of life service for Aberdeen resident Roberta “Bobbie” Jean DeNotta, who died Dec. 26 at her home, will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Rotary Log Pavilion in Aberdeen.

Arrangements were by the Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Linda S. Adderley

Linda Schreck Adderley, a resident of Aberdeen, died Monday, Jan. 12, 2015, at her home in Aberdeen. She was 58.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Gilbert “Buddy” Jake

Gilbert “Buddy” Jake, an enrolled member of the Muckelshoot Indian Tribe and a longtime Taholah resident, died Thursday, Jan. 15, 2015, at his home in Taholah. He was 79.

A funeral will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Coleman Mortuary Chapel in Hoquiam. Vault interment will follow at the Quinault Tribal cemetery in Taholah.

Michael J. Smith

WESTPORT — Michael Joe Smith of Westport died at his home on Friday Jan. 16, 2015. He was 61.

Arrangements are by the Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Barbara Louis Wood

Barbara Louis Wood passed away peacefully in the company of family on Jan. 3, 2015, at her home in Montesano. Born on June 6, 1934 to Harland and Florence (Demorest) Schermerhorn in Greenville, Mich., Barbara grew up on a nearby farm as the oldest of four. Mere years after overcoming polio, she had already fallen in love and left the farm in pursuit of adventure.

Barbara’s lively spirit and sunny disposition brought joy to everyone around her. As a tireless working mother, Barbara ventured to countless towns throughout California before finally establishing roots in Spokane. Among her diverse professional roles, Barbara handled radio dispatch for the L.A.P.D., and directed travel tours for seniors in Spokane. She retired following her work as a receptionist for Harbor’s Home Health & Hospice in Hoquiam.

Barbara’s love of crafts and map reading were punctuated by impromptu day trips, when she would excitedly drive off in search of still unseen roads.

Barbara is survived by her children, Linda Johnson of Hoquiam, Dan Breedlove of Spirit Lake, Idaho, Joe Breedlove of Chehalis and John Wood of Tacoma, a brother Robert Schermerhorn of Florida, a sister Marion Newton of Goldendale, 14 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her cherished brother, John Schermerhorn.

A memorial service will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the Wishkah Valley Community Church. Memorials may be made to New Horizons Federal Credit Union c/o Barbara Wood Memorial Fund, 120 Fireman St., Hoquiam, to help with funeral expenses.

Richard James “Rick” Perry

Richard James “Rick” Perry, age 62, a longtime Neilton resident, passed away on Jan. 11, 2015, at his home in Hoquiam. He was born on Sept. 25, 1952, in Aberdeen to Vernon and Almedia (Whitt) Perry. He went home to Quinault when he was two months old, but his twin brother only lived a few hours.

He attended school at Quinault and graduated in 1970. He began working at shake mills at a young age. He became a shake sawyer and was very good at his trade. He lost a thumb in his late ’50s. Through Labor and Industries, he obtained degrees in computing, but took ill and was not able to use them as a trade. He was very proud of them and had them hanging on his wall.

Rick was a very proud father and grandpa. He loved to sit and play his guitar and sing to the little ones. He loved country music.

Rick would get the kids off to school and pick them up after school. He adored his grandchildren. They were a great joy to him.

Surviving relatives include his daughter Rosie of Hoquiam, sons, James Perry of Quinault and Mitch of Oregon, four grandchildren, Samantha, Joshua, and Anna Funkhouser, and Marissa Mikeska, sisters, Sharon (Bob) Goodenough of Aberdeen, Joan Mullins of Montesano, and Judy (Roger) Mullins of Amanda Park. The extended family includes cousins, nieces and nephews of the area. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Duane and David.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. on Jan. 24, 2015 at the Community of Christ Church in Neilton.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Ervin Philip Leithold

Ervin Philip Leithold, 89, of Salem, entered the presence of the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2015, just three days before his 90th birthday. Ervin was born on Jan. 20, 1925 in Elgin, N.D. to Philip Leithold and Christina Pfitzer Leithold. He graduated from Elgin High School in 1942.

Ervin enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1943 and was honorably discharged in May 1946. After leaving the military, he moved to Aberdeen, Wash. to be near his mom and brothers who had moved there. He was hired by Rayonier Pulp and Paper in 1946 where he worked for 28 years. After the mill became Grays Harbor Paper, he continued working there until his retirement in January 1987.

In 1948, Ervin met Phyllis (Brecht) at Calvary Pentecostal Church in Aberdeen, Wash., and they were married on March 24, 1951. After 10 and a half years of marriage, their daughter, Becky was born.

After retiring, they moved to McMinnville in 1990 and then to Salem in 1992 to be nearer to Becky. He faithfully volunteered at Western Baptist College (now Corban University) for 14 years.

They later moved to Madrona Hills Retirement and then they moved to Farmington Square Attended Care Facility in 2010 where he resided at the time of his death.

Ervin enjoyed reading, gardening, painting, jigsaw puzzles, pitching horseshoes, laughing and telling jokes. Ervin’s faith was his most important possession. Over the years, he faithfully served in local churches, most recently at Rolling Hills Baptist Church in Salem. He loved to study the Bible and to meditate on its truth. His genuine and unwavering faith in Jesus Christ resulted in hearing “Well done, good and faithful servant” as his Lord welcomed him home.

His family, wife, Phyllis and daughter, Becky, will miss him forever and treasure his memory. He is also survived by a sister-in-law, Edith Leithold (Montesano, Wash.), close family friend, Cynthia Geddes (Vancouver, Wash.), numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Inez Leidholdt; and brothers, Emil, Robert, Arthur and Walter.

A graveside service with military honors will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 at Willamette National cemetery. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2015 at Rolling Hills Baptist Church, 6196 Sunnyside Rd. SE in Salem. Assisting the family is Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services.

James Donald Boora

James Donald Boora, formerly of Montesano, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2015 in, Centralia due to complications from lung cancer. He was 93.

Jim was born to Alexander James and Anna Theresa (Doyle) Boora on Aug. 29, 1921, in Lewiston, Idaho.

In 1923 the family moved to Seattle to find work. In 1928 his father had the opportunity to buy Model Cleaners, from Leo Lomsky’s (the famous prize fighter on the Harbor) sister. Jim worked in the dry cleaning business, alongside his father until his father’s poor health forced him to quit in 1947. Jim took over the business and ran it successfully until 1972, when a fire consumed the building. He was too old to rebuild and too young to retire, so he chose a new vocation. He became a certified Real Estate Appraiser for Aberdeen Federal (now Anchor Bank) and Grays Harbor County Assessor’s Office respectively, retiring in 1983.

Jim graduated from Weatherwax in 1939. He joined the Marine Reserves in 1937, and then entered the Army in 1942 and graduated from the Boeing School of Aeronautics as an engine technician. He then transferred to the ski troops serving in the 10th Mountain Division at Camp Hale, Colo. He was honorably discharged in 1943.

After returning from the service, Jim met the love of his life, Joyce Wright, from Montesano. They were married Oct. 1, 1944 and recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. She survives him at Sharon Care Center in Centralia. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alex and Anna, and a sister Alexandria (Sandra) Caton of Seattle, and a cousin John (Juanita) Price of Astoria, Ore. He has a sister Helen Brandvick of Aberdeen, a niece Karen (Ross) Brandvick Baker of Seattle, and numerous cousins in Hailey, Idaho. They have three children: James A. (Janet) Boora of Aberdeen, Julie (John) of Hoquiam and Jeanette (Rich) McCallum of Chehalis. The couple also have eight grandchildren: Janelle (Scot) Embry, James E. (Kristi) Boora, Janis (Josh) Steele, Kurt (Carla) Estes, Tyson (Jess) Estes, Hayley (Ramon) Coronel, Lindsey (Paul) Agnew and Tyler (Callie) McCallum. They also have 18 great-grandchildren.

In 1968 the family moved from Aberdeen to Montesano, along the Wynooche River. Jim enjoyed RVing with friends and family, especially in the Teanaway River area, gardening, wood gathering and exploring back roads on his motorcycle. He was a member of the VFW, GH Footprinters and Goldwings.

A graveside service at the Montesano cemetery, will be held at a future date. Memorial contributions can be made to VFW, c/o Quatermaster Red Moore, 315 S. Main St., Montesano, WA 98563.

Bart Stapley Rymer

Bart Stapley Rymer 66 years, passed away April 28, 2014 in Aberdeen, Washington. He was born October 30, 1947 in Delta, Utah to Norman and Velma (Stapley) Rymer.

He was raised in various towns in Utah before moving to Aberdeen in 1964. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1966. He served an LDS Church Mission to Perth, Australia for two years. After returning to Aberdeen, he joined the US Army and served in Korea during the Vietnam War era. After leaving the military he returned to Aberdeen and started working for Weyerhaeuser Sawmill and worked there for 38 years until retiring in 2009 shortly after the mill closed.

He married Sherry Marie Thompson on May 9, 1972 in the LDS Manti, Utah Temple. They have been married for 41 years and have lived in Aberdeen the whole time. They are the parents of two children.

Bart loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, & camping. He liked western movies, computer games, chess and building things.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Veann Handrahan. He is survived by his wife Sherry of Aberdeen, daughter Kathleen Rymer also of Aberdeen and son Eric (Brandy) Rymer of Port Townsend, Washington.

Grandson Stephen Rymer and step granddaughter Alexandra Solomon both of Port Townsend. Brothers, Curt Rymer of Aberdeen and Norman Dan Rymer of Utah. Sisters, Bernida Sessions, Paula Bivins, & Ranae Rhinehart all of Utah.

There will be a time of visitation and viewing on Friday, May 2, 2014 from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a graveside service at 12:00 noon at Fern Hill cemetery.

Matthew Dean Howarth

Born September 18, 1954 died April 25, 2014

Matt was born in Shelton WA. To Julian and Shirley Howarth, and was raised in McCleary and ever proud that he was a McCleary Wildcat. He graduated from Elma High School in 1973, then attended WSU, GHCC and UW.

Matt married Linda Joanne (Rowe) Howarth in 1977.

Matt was proud to have helped start the Bush Creek Fire Department and later served as a commissioner for Fire Dist. 5. He enjoyed coaching his children’s youth soccer and baseball teams. Was a certified archery instructor and taught the youth at panhandle 4-H camp for a number of years. Matt worked for Simpson Timber Co at Camp Grisdell to put himself through college. After college he worked at several different jobs before finding his favorite job at the US postal service where he worked for many years, he worked primarily at the Elma office but met many people by working at other local offices, McCleary, Montesano, Westport and several others.

Matt enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing and clamming. He also enjoyed traveling and being with his family.

Matt is survived by wife Linda, children Katherine, Matthew (Janell) and Arianne, grandson Coy, his mother Shirley, sister Roxanne Calvert ( Bill) brothers Scott and Greg ( Carol), and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded by his father Julian Howarth and step mother Patricia Howarth

The family is having an informal gathering at the Elma Eagles on May 2 from 11am to 1pm drop in share a memory and a laugh.

In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Elma High School or Grays Harbor 4-H scholarship funds, or charity of choice.
