Alex Chinnick

OLYMPIA — Alex J. Chinnick, an Elma area resident, died Monday, July 27, 2015 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 25 and graduated from Elma High School in 2010.

Donations are suggested to an account at the Elma branch of Anchor Bank in his name to help cover final expenses.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Malone Assembly of God Church. A potluck reception will follow the service.

Arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Linda L. (St. Louis) Muhlhauser

A celebration of life for longtime Aberdeen resident Linda Louise (St. Louis) Muhlhauser, who died July 27 in Olympia, will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in the chapel at Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen. A potluck will follow at 902 5th St. in Hoquiam.

Connie J. Cocuzzi

Longtime Aberdeen resident Connie Jean Cocuzzi died Friday, July 31, 2015 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital. She was 77.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Alex Ghilarducci

Alex Ghilarducci, a 59-year resident of Central Park, died at his home Wednesday, July 29, 2015. He was 88.

He had been a logger for Weyerhaeuser Timber Co. for many years.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Jeri Trudell Scholarship Fund, c/o St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 400 E. 1st St., Aberdeen, WA 98520 or the Central Park Fire Department, 6317 Olympic Hwy., Aberdeen, WA 98520

A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8 in the chapel at Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen. A reception will follow in the Dorothy Mann Reception Room at the funeral Home.

Gerald (Jerry) Frank Swan

Jerry, 79, died of heart failure Wednesday, July 29, 2015 at his Olympia home. Jerry was born May 13, 1936 to Walter F. and Audrey (Davis) Swan in Aberdeen, Wash. He grew up near Grass Creek, where his family founded Grass Creek Oyster Company in the 1940s. He graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1954. He then graduated from Washington State College in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering. He worked in various locations in Alaska in the early 1960s. Jerry married Elizabeth Giedt on June 22, 1963 in Seattle, Wash. They returned to Alaska briefly before moving to Bellevue in 1966 and then to Olympia in 1979.

Jerry worked as a civil engineer with Kiewit Construction Company from 1961 until 1987, where he worked mostly on complex concrete fabrication. He was especially proud of managing the construction of the Seattle Kingdome’s roof structure in the 1970s. Along with his brother Ed, he continued to manage the Grass Creek Oyster Company until its sale in 2010. After retiring, he and his wife Liz built a home overlooking Zangle Cove near Boston Harbor, where they maintained vegetable gardens, flower gardens and a small orchard. They traveled widely, visiting China, France, Australia, Peru and Hawaii.

He loved the outdoors, boating, shooting and handloading, gardening, fishing, clamming and oyster farming.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 52 years Elizabeth Swan, of Olympia; sons, Jerold (Jay) Swan and wife Kimberly Hannula of Durango, Colo., Michael Swan and wife Anne of Santa Barbara, Calif.; brother, Edward Swan and wife Shirley of Olympia, and a grandchild, Ian Swan of Durango, Colo.

Family suggests memorial donations to: Gerald & Elizabeth Swan Endowed Scholarship Fund in Civil Engineering, Washington State University, or Providence St. Peter Cardiac Rehabilitation.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date. Funeral arrangements are by Funeral Alternatives of Washington.

Anita A. Begley

Anita Amy Begley, a longtime Harborite, died Friday, July 31, 2015 at her home in Aberdeen. She was 69.

She was raised and attended school in Hoquiam.

A celebration of her life will be held at the family home at a later date.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Kenneth Furu

OLYMPIA — A celebration of life for longtime Hoquiam resident Kenneth L. Furu, who died July 28 in Olympia,

will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Hoquiam Elks Lodge. A potluck fellowship gathering will follow.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

The family requests donations be sent to the Lake Quinault Historical Society and Museum, P.O. Box 35, Quinault, Washington 98575.

OLYMPIA — Montesano resident Richard Dossett died Thursday, July 30, 2015 at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 79.

Arrangements are by Funeral Alternatives of Washington in Tumwater.

Ira Curtis Rapp

Ira Curtis Rapp of Aberdeen passed away peacefully on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2015 at Fir Lane Health and Rehabilitation Center in Shelton with his family by his side. Ira was born in Aberdeen on March 26, 1943 to George Theodore and Mary Isabelle (Haire) Rapp.

On June 24, 1967 Ira married Mary Ann Strumski in Aberdeen. She survives him at the family home.

Ira quit high school and went into the Washington Army National Guard. He quit for a year then returned to the National Guard and served for 20 years. While in the National Guard Ira went back to Grays Harbor College and got his missing credits and graduated with Hoquiam High School class of 1971.

Ira ran the Aberdeen Eagles bingo for several years. He also liked to bowl on Thursday nights; he even got his 300 game. He also got to bowl in Nationals in Reno which he always wanted to do. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

When Ira was 18 he set pins at the Aberdeen Recreation above the old Smoke Shop on Heron St. He also worked at Grays Harbor Chair Factory, Weyerhaeuser Saw Mill and retired from the Hoquiam School District as a bus driver in 2008. He was known as “Smiley” on the bus.

Ira is survived by Mary Ann his wife of 48 years. Three daughters JoAnn and Michelle Rapp of Aberdeen and Christina Hathaway of Anchorage, Alaska, nine grandchildren, Ashley Roberts, Trevor and Alexander Hathaway, Madison Wahlbrink, Jessica, Courtney, Kelsey, Dakota and Tyler Rapp; one sister Jean Lyons of Federal Way, two brothers Richard (Patricia) Rapp of Aberdeen and Merrill (Zola) Smith of Longview and also several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Mary, three sisters Norma Black, May Arell and Peggy Murphy, three brothers Ronald and Theodore Rapp and James Smith and his loving dog Chico.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that donation be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to a fund set up at New Horizon’s Credit Union to help the family with funeral expenses.

A memorial potluck will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5 at the Aberdeen Eagles, 200 W. Market St.

Arrangements are entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Leslee Karen Odle

Leslee Karen Odle, 60, passed away Aug. 27, 2015 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, with her family by her side. Leslee was born on May 24, 1955, to Eldon and Arlayne Odle.

Her passion was sewing her own clothes and collecting rocks from the beach she loved.

Survivors include daughter Jennifer and grandchildren, son Kyle and granddaughter Cayla, sisters and families, Barbara (Dale), Brynn, Steve, Bryan (Stacy), Elizabeth and Eldon Rasmus, Charmon Odle, Claire Zimmerman, Diane (Russ), Shane, Haleigh and Lindsey Raymond, Courtney (Blaine) and Lincoln Adams. Debra (Eric), Garrett (Britnee), and Raylan Parsons, Arlynn (Steve), Noah, Layne, Andrew Martin and her special friend Mike Cordova.

Planning a gathering of family and friends on Sunday, Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. at the Tokeland Jetty.

We would like to say a special thank you to the staff at GHCH; what wonderful and caring people.

Phyllis (Leavenworth) Lowell

Phyllis (Leavenworth) Lowell of Aberdeen, Wash., passed away Saturday morning Aug. 15, 2015, of cancer, with her daughter and son-in-law by her side. The cancer was very sudden and it took her much too quickly.

Phyllis was an amazing woman with a beautiful soul, who loved serving God first and foremost. Her ability to love others and put everyone in front of herself was unsurpassed and she truly touched so many lives.

Phyllis is survived by her daughter Amanda (Lowell) Delaney, and her son-in-law, Tyler Delaney along with four sisters, one brother, her mother, Mary Leavenworth of Aberdeen and so many nieces, nephews and friends. We all loved her so much and our lives will never be the same.

Services will be held at the the Harbor City Church in Aberdeen Saturday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m.

Joe C. Bullard

Joe C. Bullard was born on March 13, 1934 in Kennedy, Okla. to parents Carl and Clara Bullard and passed away at the age of 81 on Aug. 23, 2015 in Olympia, Wash. He was raised in Wister, Okla. and graduated from Fanshawe High School in 1952. Furthering his education, he earned a BS in ED from Southeastern Oklahoma State, Durant, Okla. in 1956 and a Masters in ED in 1963 from the University of North Colorado, Greeley, Colo. He began his career in education in Colorado in 1963 and came to Washington State in 1971, to work for the Aberdeen School District as Principal of Central Park Elementary. He then moved to the Aberdeen School District Administration Office. In 1976, he accepted a position as Asst. Superintendent with the Edmonds School District. After a successful 16 years in the Edmonds School District, he retired. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1958.

Joe married Barbara Erickson Gates in Aberdeen in 1974. She survives at the family home in Tumwater. His daughter, Sandra Jenkins, lives with her husband Jeff in North Carolina. Surviving step-sons are Dean (Kim) Gates of Montesano, Wash. and Rory (Candis) Gates of Aberdeen, Wash., six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren also survive. Joe’s only brother, Charles (Marilyn) survives in Pocola, Okla.

Joe’s remains will buried next to his mother and dad in a rural cemetery in Wister, Okla. A graveside memorial service will be held at Ellis Chapel in Wister, Okla. at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. Memorials may be sent to the American Alzheimer’s Association.

Scarlett Rose Thiessen Erickson

It is with deeply saddened hearts that the family of Scarlett Rose Thiessen Erickson, 68 of Olympia, Wash., share her unexpected passing on July 17, 2015.

Scarlett was born on Feb. 26, 1947, in Aberdeen, Wash., to Raymond and Mildred Thieseen. She was raised in Hoquiam, Wash., along with her brother Lionel Thiessen, and graduated from Weatherwax High School with the class of 1965 in Aberdeen. During her school years, Scarlett enjoyed cheerleading and was crowned Song Queen. Scarlett had an abundance of friends and was loved by all.

Scarlett was married to Richard Erickson for 38 years and was a wonderful, loving mother to four children. She spent most of those years as a homemaker caring for her family, extended family, foster children and anyone else she could help. Scarlett retired from Reeves Middle School as a library aide.

Scarlett loved cooking, sewing, gardening, reading, water skiing, camping, shopping and road trips. She was a very loving, nurturing, kind and generous woman and was a faithful Christian who shared God’s love for others.

Scarlett is preceded in death by her parents, Raymond & Mildred Thiessen; her son, Aaron Erickson; and her grandson Trevor Smith.

Scarlett is survived by Richard Erickson; her children Angela Erickson-Smith, Ryan Erickson and Tatum Ponzoah; her daughter-in-laws, Celeste Erickson and Rachael Erickson; her grandchildren, Erika Erickson-Smith, Alicia Debeau, Joshua Erickson, Zachary Erickson, Carson Headrick, Zoie Erickson and Benjamin Ponzoah; and her brother Lionel Thiessen.

WE HOLD YOU CLOSE IN OUR HEARTS, AND THERE YOU SHALL REMAIN, TO WALK WITH US THROUGHOUT OUR LIVES, UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN. FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS.

Larry Prickett

Larry died Aug. 1, 2015 at the age of 74. He is survived by his son’s Erik & Todd. At his request there will be no services.

Alex Jeffery Chinnick

Alex Jeffery Chinnick, 25, an Elma area resident, died at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Monday, July 27, 2015. He was born in Everett, Wash., on April 4, 1990, and came to Elma to live at the age of 8. He attended Elma schools and graduated from Elma High School in 2010.

He enjoyed the outdoor life, looking for deer and elk and playing with the family’s miniature horses and donkeys.

Alex was always quick with a smile and, according to the family, had a “wicked” sense of humor. He was very good with his hands.

Alex is survived by his parents: Marcia Chinnick and Andrew Walters, Elma; three brothers: Forrest and Dakota Chinnick, both of Elma and Benjamin and wife Anastazja Walters, Sun City, Ariz.; and two sisters: Amanda and Bethany Chinnick, both of Elma; and his grandparents: Ronald Chinnick, Ocean Shores, Wash. and Lezlie Shell, Espanola, New Mexico; and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.

A celebration of Alex’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, August 8, at the Malone Assembly of God Church. Casual colorful dress is suggested. A potluck reception at the church will follow the services.

The family suggests donations can be made at Anchor Bank, Elma branch, in Alex’s name, to help cover final expenses.

Arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.

David Archie Biggs

David Archie Biggs passed away at his home in Elma on Aug. 5, 2015. David was born Dec. 10, 1940 in Oysterville, Wash. After graduating from Ocosta High School, David attended Grays Harbor College and then served in the Air Force for seven years. He then continued his education at Central University earning a bachelor’s degree in teaching. David taught at Lake Quinault high school from 1970-1973. He then moved to Hoquiam and worked at his dad’s shake mill and in the oyster cannery. Later David went to work full time for the U.S. Postal Service, which he retired from in 2002. David enjoyed being active in his grandchildren’s lives, attending their numerous racing and sporting events. David is best known for his love of Mopars, die cast cars and racing.

David is survived by his mother, Iva, wife Jackie, sons Atom (Sonja), Troy (Alana), Jay (Mandy), Brandon (Charity), and Damon, his brother Alan, sister Lila (Pete) and several grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. at the McCleary VFW Hall.

Owen Thomas Davies

Owen Thomas Davies, 92 years of age and a longtime Harborite, died on Friday, Aug. 28, 2015 at Montesano Health and Rehabilitation Center in Montesano, Wash. He was born on June 23, 1923 in Shawnee, Wyo. to William Daniel and Nora M. (Haley) Davies.

He was raised in Shawnee and attended a one room schoolhouse. The family homesteaded and raised their own beef for their grocery store. As a youth he played baseball and earned money by tending to the animals at the ranch.

He was drafted into the United States Army and served from April 2, 1943, until he was discharged as a PFC, with the 110th Army Air Force, on Oct. 30, 1945. He was involved in the battles at Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the Bronze Service Arrowhead. He had traveled to many places and had seen many sights at the behest of the U.S. Army during WWII.

He was married to Jean McFadden on March 9, 1947, in Colorado Springs, Colo. and they then lived in Thermopolis, Wyo. The couple later moved to Hoquiam, and he had since resided in the area.

He had worked at many jobs in the area to include laying ties and building bridges for the railroad, working in the woods of the Pacific Northwest and lastly in the local mill industry.

Owen enjoyed “tinkering in his garage’ with various maintenance projects of his household. Some of his memorable times were when his family went camping, fishing and clam digging.

He will be long remembered for his good humor, being honest, fair and truthful. He was slow to anger or to judge others. But mostly he wanted to be remembered as a man who wanted to have done more and been worth great than his pay.

All three of Owen’s “charges” survive him, Don Grigsby of Hoquiam, Larry Grigsby with his wife, Myrna of Gold Canyon, Ariz. and Karen Hunt with her husband, Brian of Montesano. His extended family includes his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean Davies in 2007 and his four siblings, Marion, Mildred, Buster and Bud.

A cryptside service with entombment will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 5, 2015, at the Hoquiam Sunset Memorial Park Bower Mausoleum with Rev. Bob Hoem officiating.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Dona Daniels

Dona L. Daniels, a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 80.

She had worked for George and Craig Powers at Harbor Chiropractic for many years.

A service is being planned and will be announced in a later edition of The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
