Kim C. (Perkins) Zerr

Kim Coleen Perkins Zerr, a longtime Ocean Shores resident, died Sunday, Aug. 30, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 57.

She had worked at various occupations to include being a cocktail waitress in Arizona and at the Quinault Beach Resort & Casino in Ocean Shores for the past 12 years.

There will be no formal funeral service.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Doris Smith

Doris M. Smith, a resident of the Harbor since 1980, died Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015, at Westhaven Villa in Aberdeen. She was 95.

She had been an educator in public schools in both Ohio and Washington until retiring to Pacific Beach in 1980. She would later live in Hoquiam and Aberdeen.

Visitation will be from 12:30 to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam. A graveside committal service will follow at 1 p.m. at Hoquiam’s Sunset Memorial Park. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen, Seattle Children’s Hospital Foundation, Maryville College-Class of 1942 or Withrow High School, Class of 1938.

Elwyn F. Elerding

Elwyn F. Elerding, 91, passed away at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia, Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2015. He was born in Bellingham, Wash. Nov. 21, 1923. He was preceded in death by his parents Laverne and Frances Elerding, a sister, Lorraine Clement, a son, Steven Elerding and a stepson, Donald Frieze.

Elwyn is survived by his children Laura, David, Nancy and Bonnie; four grandchildren and one great-grandson. There are also his step-children Doug, Denny and Deanna and three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Judy Gold.

Elwyn grew up in Aberdeen where his parents owned and operated Elerding Mortuary. He graduated from Weatherwax High School in Aberdeen, the class of 1941. He attended Washington State University and then served in the U.S. Navy during World War Two from 1943-46, receiving the American Area Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theatre and World War Two Victory Medal.

In 1951 he graduated from the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science and then settled into a career in the U.S. Forestry Service, first as a ranger, then a forest fire fighter and would retire in 1983 as a Purchasing Agent in the Olympia office.

Elwyn married his first wife, Jeanne Carlson, June 15, 1945. Elwyn was a mountaineer who first climbed and named Primus Peak and Tricouni Peak in the North Cascades with his wife, Jeanne Elerding, and his brother-in-law, Les Carlson, in August 1951.

On May 5, 1973 he married Arline Frieze and moved to Tacoma where he lived until July 2015. Arline and her family spent many great years with El. The last eight years Arline cared for El due to his ailing health with dementia. Arline’s dedication and tender loving care allowed El to live a happy life up until his last months on Earth. Due to Arline’s health Elwyn moved to Olympia his last three weeks where his children were able to spend some quality time and cherished memories.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5 in the Chapel at Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home. Interment will take place in Fern Hill cemetery.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.

John E. DeLateur Jr.

John DeLateur “Johnny D, ” 59, passed away at home on June 14, 2015. Born in Aberdeen to Yvonne Simons and John “Jack” DeLateur, he grew up and spent most his life on Grays Harbor.

He married Kim Perry in 1994 (later divorced) they had a son Jabin L. DeLateur of Olympia.

He leaves behind many friends and family members who loved and cared deeply for him, including his son, a sister Pam Shelton of Hoquiam and niece Tina Graham of Olympia.

John was a logger in his younger years, then worked 25-plus years in cabinetry. He worked for Little Hoquiam Shipyard and Westport Shipyard, besides his own custom cabinet shop.

He enjoyed going to car shows and was a member of the Push Rods car club. But most of all was his lifelong love of being a musician. He played in many bands on the Harbor and was very loyal and dedicated to his friends and music.

Oliver E. Riekkola

Oliver Emil Riekkola, a lifetime Aberdeen resident and former teacher in the Moclips/North Beach School District, died Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2015, at Grays Harbor Health and Rehab Center in Aberdeen. He was 81.

There will be a celebration of his life at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Maaret Anita Vataja

Our dear sister, Maaret Anita Vataja, passed away in her sleep on Aug. 8, 2015 in Hayward, Calif., at the age of 62. Maaret was born Oct. 8, 1952, in Pori, Finland, to Eino and Dora (Grönlund) Vataja. In 1959, the family moved to Aberdeen and Maaret graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1971. Over the years Maaret had worked at Montgomery-Wards in Aberdeen, and Western Steel. She was very proud of her Finnish roots, having visited her birthplace a number of times, and had been a member of the United Finnish Kaleva Brothers and Sisters Lodge #9 in Aberdeen. Maaret maintained her mother’s traditions of baking braided cardamom bread (pulla) and knitting slippers (tossut). Maaret had a particular soft spot for cats.

Maaret is survived by two sisters, Katja Vataja of Arizona, and Tanja (Dick) Fairburn of Spokane; a brother, Roy, of Aberdeen; three nephews, Dustin (Elizabeth) Van Wyck, Tyson (Hayley) Martinez, and Joaquin McGinnis; and six grand-nieces and -nephews. Maaret’s parents preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Aberdeen Museum of History.

A private service will be held by the family at a later date.

Gordon Alfred Holt

Gordon Alfred Holt passed away on Aug. 7, 2015, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Tacoma. He was born on Dec. 17, 1934, to George and Leila Holt in Aberdeen, Wash. He graduated from Aberdeen High School in 1953 and the University of Puget Sound in 1958. He was a retired Kent school teacher.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ellen Breakey Holt, his daughter Maria Wood (Woody) and son George Holt (Andrewena), brother Douglas Holt (Mikki), and six nieces and nephews, their spouses and children.

A memorial service will be held on Aug. 28 at 1 p.m. at Faith Covenant Church in Sumner. Heartfelt thanks to all the Group Health Medical staff who took such good care of him. Suggested remembrances to Make a Wish, American Heart Association or charity of your choice. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Frankie Allen Thomas

Frankie Allen Thomas, age 76, a longtime resident of the Harbor, died on Aug. 14, 2015, at his home in Aberdeen. Mr. Thomas was born on March 12, 1939, in Moclips, Wash., to Frank and Matilda (Cunningham) Thomas.

He had worked as a shake sawyer and had owned a mill, Ace Shake in Humptulips. He had previously lived in Raymond where, in addition to working in the mills, he had worked as a mechanic.

Mr. Thomas loved watching his boys work in the woods, salmon fishing and camping. He enjoyed spending time at the beach. In fact, one of his last requests was going to the beach three days prior to his death.

Surviving family members include his former wife with whom he remained close, Shirley McKinney of Aberdeen; children, Don Thomas of Aberdeen, Allen Thomas of Kelso, Theresa Thomas of Hoquiam, Dale Thomas of Aberdeen and Glen Thomas of Rainier, Wash.; two sisters, Mary Emerson and Lana Takhar; a brother, Lanny “Butch” Thomas; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. A granddaughter, Angel Thomas, and two sisters, Eileen Fletcher and Delcie Totten, died previously.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, at South Aberdeen Baptist Church.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Charlie Hallam

OLYMPIA — Lifelong Aberdeen resident Charlie Hallam died Friday, Aug. 28, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital, Olympia. He was 54.

He graduated in the class of 1979 at Weatherwax High School and worked as a metal fabricator.

A gathering of friends and family will take place at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Donald “BOONE” Potvin

Donald passed away at St. Joseph Hospital in Chewelah, Wash., on Aug. 16 at 10 p.m., with his family at his side. He was 58 years old. He was born in Chewelah, Wash., to his mother Darolyn Erdman and has four siblings, Steven Potvin, Jana Dee Potvin, Stacey Colton and Ricky Erdman. He worked all of his life in the Trucking Industry. He retired from Peninsula Truck Lines in 2010.

Donald is survived by his wife Anna Potvin, his three children John Rogers, Alfredo Lagao and Shelly Pettit; seven grandkids, Clarrisa Rapp, Sydney Rogers, Ricky Rapp, Emma Pettit, Shelby Pettit, Isabel Rogers and Espyn Lagao, and one great-grandchild, Athena Rapp. He was a beloved family man who will be missed.

Andrew Juan Kolb

Andrew Juan Kolb died unexpectedly on Aug. 15, 2015. He was 26 years old. Andrew was born in Guatemala (Juan Alejandro Mateo) and lived there until he was two, when he came to Aberdeen to join his adoptive family. He lived the rest of his life in Aberdeen. He was baptized at the Aberdeen First Presbyterian Church, attended McDermoth Elementary School and Miller Junior High. He graduated from Aberdeen High School where his favorite class was weight lifting. Andrew was always very personable and made friends easily. It was hard not to like him. He was kind, big-hearted, generous and thoughtful. He had a great sense of humor and a terrific smile. He liked to eat (especially Mexican food, pizza, and holiday dinners), play video games, watch movies, read, play pool and ride his scooter. He also wrote poetry, sketched, took good pictures with his cell phone, and really understood computers.

Andrew is survived by his parents, Gary and Laurie Kolb, and seven brothers and sisters: Jessica, Jordan, Stuart, Alina (Polo), Victoria, Luisa (Chad), and Alex. In addition, he is survived by three nephews, Jay and Jon Shekhar, and Estefan Morales-Kolb; his aunts and uncles, Betsy Lindsay and Ron Lux, Jean Lindsay and Jeff Wilson, and Bryan and Kathy Kolb; and his cousins, Mara and Ethan Lux, and Anthony and Damien Kolb.

He will forever live in our hearts and we will always love him. His family is planning a private service to honor his memory.

Zuba Ann Cole

Mrs. Zuba Ann Cole, age 69, of Fernandina Beach passed away on Saturday, Aug. 15, 2015, at Baptist Medical Center.

Born in Sikeston, Mo., she was the youngest of two children and the only daughter born to the late Edd Leon and Annie Lavelle Owen Hodges. As an infant, her family moved to McCleary, Wash., for her father’s work in a plywood mill and as a cattle farmer. She grew up in McCleary and attended Olympia Vocational Technical Institute and completed her Business Certification. In the mid 1960s, while attending the annual “McCleary Bear Festival” she met her future husband, Thomas L. Cole. They would marry on July 5, 1968. The newlyweds made their home in Montesano, Wash., a small town in Grays Harbor on the Olympic Peninsula. Her husband pursued his career with Rayonier while Mrs. Cole maintained their home and began raising their three daughters. In 1981, her husband’s career brought the family to Fernandina Beach and in 1991 they made a local move; to Nassauville.

The Coles were longtime, faithful members of the Yulee United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Red Hat Society.

Her family fondly recalls her attributes as a wonderful wife, mother, homemaker and cook.

Mrs. Cole leaves behind her husband of 47 years, Tom Cole, Fernandina Beach Fla.; their three daughters, Kelly Stripp and her husband, Chris, Harrison, Alaska, Donna Ennic, Fernandina Beach, Fla., Tonya Cole, Fernandina Beach, Fla.; her brother, James W. Hodges (Rose), Olympia, Wash.; grandchildren, Roger Dickey, Colton Stipp, Kelsey Stipp, Amanda Wallace, Thomas Ennis, Rebecca Knowles, Stan Knowles, Ira Holton; a niece, Lynn Denniston and a nephew, Keith Hodges.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 20, at Yulee United Methodist Church with Pastor Charlie Sward officiating.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday, at the church, from 10 a.m. until the hour of service as well as following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.

OXLEY - HEARD FUNERAL DIRECTORS

Marilyn Croker

Marilyn Croker, 89, died July 30, 2015 with her family at her bedside in Bellevue, Wash. She was born in Lansing, Mich. to Jack and Velva Neva. In 1993 they migrated from the wheat fields of North Dakota to the Pacific Northwest. They settled in Aberdeen, Wash., where she attended St. Mary’s School. In 1940 the family moved to Centralia. She married Stanley Patnode in 1945. They had three children together. Stanley was in a terrible accident and had both of his legs crushed. Marilyn nursed him back to health for many years. People were astounded at the “Florence Nightingale” she became. Yet their luck was not to hold, after all the pain and hard work the two of them went through, Stanley developed cancer and died Aug. 14, 1971.

This story does have a happy ending. In 1980 Marilyn met and married George Croker. They were married for the past 34 wonderful years. They resided in Central Park, Wash. for 32 years before moving to Bellevue, Wash. She and George looked forward to their annual trip to California, where they enjoyed time with family and friends “The hostess with the mostest” was a good description of her — she loved having family gatherings.

She is survived by her husband George, three children, and two step-children; Carolynn James, Kirkland, Bryce Patnode, Hoquiam, Steve Patnode, Central Park, Shirley Alderson, Richland, Charlie Croker, Milton, grandchildren David Patnode, Austin, Texas, Audi Patnode, Hoquiam, Jamie Patnode, Seattle, three great-grandchildren Miles, Blair and Mayer Patnode, Austin, Texas, sisters Colleen Hahn, Olympia and Lorraine Richards, Seattle, brothers Gordon Neva, Raymond and Myron Neva, Centralia. She was preceded in death by her brother Gene Neva.

Graveside services will be held on Aug. 19 at 12 p.m. at Fern Hill cemetery, with a reception following at Grays Harbor Country Club.

Muriel I. McBride

OLYMPIA — Muriel Iris McBride of Aberdeen died Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. She was 88.

Visitation will take place from noon to 5 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Harrison Family Mortuary located in Aberdeen. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. John’s cemetery in Wishkah Valley.

Arrangements are by the Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Earl L. Wilder

ELMA — Earl L. Wilder, an Elma native and resident of the East County area all of his life, died Thursday, Aug. 20, 2015, at his home in Elma. He was 77.

A celebration of his life is being planned and will be announced in a later edition of The Daily World.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

David E. McFaddin

SUTHERLIN, Ore. — David E. McFaddin of Sutherlin, Ore., died on Friday, Aug. 21, 2015.

Arrangements are pending through the Sutherlin Chapel of the Roses.

Bookyoung Yi

Bookyoung Yi, a resident of Westport, died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen on Monday, Aug. 3, 2015. She was 60.

Arrangements were by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Donald R. Pierce Jr.

Donald Ray Pierce Jr., a longtime resident of Hoquiam, died Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen following an extended illness. He was 49.

He worked at various jobs to include working as a warehouseman and in construction.

A celebration of his life will be held at the family home at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Gina F. Mahan

Gina Freida Mahan, a resident of Ocean Shores, died Friday, Aug. 7, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 77.

She had worked as a bookkeeper for a computer transistor company.

A private service will be held at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.
