Charles Sale Johnson Jr.

Charles Sale Johnson Jr., father, son, husband, uncle, friend, and bon vivant died Sept. 25 at Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation after a three year struggle with dementia.

Sale, a third generation Californian, was born in 1923 to Charles Sale Johnson Sr. and Dorothy (Dillon) Johnson of Fresno, Calif. Three years later Sale’s sister, Rosemary Johnson Dawson, was born. Rosemary passed away Sept. 25, 2014.

Sale graduated from Fresno’s Roosevelt High School in 1943. Along with many classmates, he joined the service after graduation. Sale attended Navy office training school at Northwestern University and gained the rank of Ensign 1st class. His Navy duty was aboard USS Barrow in the Pacific theater.

After the Japanese surrender he returned to Fresno and graduated from Fresno State College with a teaching degree. Johnson served as an elementary school principal in San Leandro, Calif. for over 30 years. He met Barbara Wynans, from Aberdeen, Wash. in San Leandro where she was a first year teacher. They married in 1959. She survives him at the family home in Central Park.

Sale brought two sons to their marriage; Charles Sale Johnson III, of San Diego, and Peter Johnson, of Coarsegold, Calif. Seven years later, Amanda and Samuel were born. Amanda and her husband, Jim Muck, live in Wheatland, Calif. Samuel and his wife, Robin, reside in Napa, Calif. After retiring in 1989, he and Barbara moved to Aberdeen to be closer to her parents, Ross and Sylvia Wynans, and her brother and sister-in-law, Jim and Susan Wynans.

Sale was quick witted and a great story teller. He loved newspapers, especially the editorial sections where he established his own reputation as a letter writer. “Fish on” was his favorite battle cry. He loved the challenges of bridge and crossword puzzles. He was a voracious reader of Napoleonic maritime historical fiction, but nothing pleased him more than spending the day cooking a family feast. He was loving, supportive, funny and a bigger-than-life hero to his family and friends.

Sale leaves niece, Kimberly Wynans, of Everett, Wash. and two nieces and a nephew Dorothy Dawson, Sloan Dawson Johnson (David) and John Dawson, all of Fresno.

A memorial service will be held at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Aberdeen on Saturday, Oct. 31 at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial in his name to Grays Harbor College Foundation c/o Jan Jorgenson would be appreciated.

Arrangements are entrusted to Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Kenneth V. Gottula

OCEAN SHORES — Kenneth Vern Gottula, a resident of Ocean Shores for the past 10 years, died Thursday, Oct. 22, 2015, at home in Ocean Shores. He was 72.

He was a draftsman in the oil and gas industry for numerous years.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Aberdeen.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Aaron R. Brix

SATSOP — Aaron Robert Brix died at his home in Satsop Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. He was 55. Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Gayle T. Cotton

Gayle Teresa Cotton, 64, Cosmopolis resident and former nurse at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, died Friday evening, Oct. 23, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash.

Gayle was born on Sept. 18, 1951, in Goldendale, Wash., to Leo Gale and Janice Lee (Walton) Hake. They moved to Mt. Vernon a couple of years later.

On March 7, 1967, Gayle went to hear a gospel singer and evangelist Tony Fontaine and during the meeting the gospel of Jesus Christ came alive in her heart and she gave her life to her savior.

Later that same year they moved to Aberdeen where she graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1969. She then went to Grays Harbor Community College where she earned her License in Practical Nursing in 1973.

It was on Aug. 14, 1971, that she married her high school sweetheart Wayne F. Cotton Jr. at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Aberdeen. He resides at their home, Cottonball Ranch, outside Cosmopolis.

Gayle went to work for Grays Harbor Community Hospital following graduation as an LPN and worked there off and on until she left in 2014. She then went to work for Harbor’s Home Health &Hospice. She worked there until Dec. 13, 2014, when she was diagnosed with cancer.

Gayle was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam and the Grays Harbor YMCA. She enjoyed her chickens, gardening, walking at Friends Landing, and her sweet dog Abby. But the joy of her life was her relationship with Christ and spending time with her family.

Gayle is survived by her husband of 44 years, Wayne Cotton Jr. of Cosmopolis, Wash.; three sons: Todd of Denver, Colo., Geoff and wife Stephanie of Centennial, Colo. and Brad and wife Samantha of Snohomish, Wash.; brothers Brad and wife Leslie Hake of Central Park and Gregg Hake of Renton, Wash.; five grandchildren: Parker, Tanner, Carson, Easton and Kylie; and numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be a celebration of Gayle’s life on Saturday, Oct. 31, 2015, at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam.

Hilma Heikkinen

A graveside service for Montesano resident Hilma A. Heikkinen, who died Oct. 14, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at Wynooche cemetery.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary of Montesano.

Bruce Kullander

Bruce H. Kullander, a lifetime resident of the Harbor, died Sunday, Oct. 16, 2016, at his home in Montesano. He was 63.

Services are being planned and will be announced at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Karen Y. Amsbury

Karen Yvonne Amsbury died Tuesday, Oct. 18, 2016, at her Hoquiam home. She was 72.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Jason P. Marchand

OLYMPIA — Jason Paul Marchand of Ocean Shores died Monday, Oct. 17, 2016, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. He was 44.

Viewing will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at New Beginnings Community Church in Aberdeen. A graveside service will follow at Sunset Memorial Park and a reception will follow at the church.

Geraldine I. Bronson

OLYMPIA — Geraldine Irene Bronson of Montesano died Monday, Oct. 17, 2106, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia. She was 61.

Arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Lois A. Akerson

Lois A. Akerson, 87, a resident of the Forest Grove community, died Saturday, morning, Oct. 17, 2015, at the Tuality Community Hospital in Hillsboro, Ore.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Nov. 7, 2015, at 2 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 2231 19th Avenue in Forest Grove, with Reverend Spencer King, pastor of the church, officiating. Private Interment will follow at the Willamette National cemetery, 11800 S.E. Mt. Scott Blvd. in Portland, Ore.

Family and friends are invited to attend a reception at the church immediately following the service.

Lois Anne Akerson was born Sept. 20, 1928, in Bloomfield, Neb., the daughter of the late August Cook and Anna (Peters) Cook. She was raised and received her education in the Bloomfield

community, and then following her father’s death, moved to California. She graduated from Alhambra City High School in 1945. Later she attended Pasadena Junior college and graduated in 1947 with her AA degree.

She was united in marriage to Edwin Clinton Akerson on Sept. 29, 1950, in Las Vegas. They resided in Castro Valley, Fremont and San Francisco, Calif. They entered the Salvation Army Training School. They were trained in ministry and led a church in Greeley, Colo., for a short time. After leaving the Salvation Army, they returned to California. In 1968 they moved to Seattle, Wash., and later they resided in Aberdeen, Wash., for 31 years. In 2000, they moved to Oregon, settling in the Forest Grove community.

One of her jobs was working as a substitute teacher in Fremont, Calif. She also taught kindergarten at Grays Harbor Christian School in Aberdeen. After that, following a couple of secretarial positions, she primarily worked as a policy writer for Grays Harbor Title Company for over 20 years, until she retired.

She was a member of the First Christian Church in Forest Grove. She also taught Sunday School in California and Washington.

Among her special interests she enjoyed gardening and creative writing. She was part of the group “Writers in the Grove, ” and her writings were published in “Seeds of …….” Vol. I & II, an anthology of pacific Northwest writers. Also her stories and articles were published in a few magazines and the local newspaper.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin on Aug. 29, 2007 after celebrating over fifty-six years of marriage together.

Lois was also preceded in death by her parents, August and Anna Cook; by her two brothers, Paul Cook and Martin Cook; her two sisters, Ruby Greenwall and Marjorie Schrader and also Ed and Lois’s daughter, Carol Akerson.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Eric and Debbie Akerson, of Forest Grove, Ore., and her two daughters, Paula Akerson, of Papua, New Guinea, and Donna Tumulty, of Everett, Wash., and her two sons, David and Stephen.

The family suggests that any remembrances given may be directed to the First Christian Church of Forest Grove in her memory.

Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt Funeral Home in Forest Grove is entrusted with the arrangements.

Mary C. Fisher

Mary Catherine Fisher, 65, former Aberdeen resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2015, at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, Wash.

Mary was born on Jan. 2, 1950, in Aberdeen to Alex and Florence (Thompson) Krawchook. She grew up in Aberdeen and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and then graduated from Weatherwax High School in 1968.

On Aug. 13, 1979, Mary married Bob J. Fisher, who resides at the family home.

She worked at Miller Jr. High School in 2003 as a nurse’s aide and before that worked at Duke Allen Gift Shop in Aberdeen. Mary’s pride came from being a dedicated mother and maintaining the home. She loved decorating for the holidays especially Christmas. Mary had an beautiful smile, big heart and a laugh that was contagious.

She was a member of the Aberdeen Eagles, The Rose Society and St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening while listening to music, camping at Hood Canal, and had a talent for arts and crafts. One of her favorite memories was spending time at the family cabin on Black Lake that her father built.

Mary is survived by her husband of 36 years, Bob Fisher of Cosmopolis; daughters: Lisa Mehlhoff of Portland, Ore., and Lora Fisher of Lebanon, Ore.; a step-son, Jim Fisher of Seattle; grandchildren: Jaxon Baker and Braden Baker; brothers: John Krawchook of Olympia and Byron Womer of Aberdeen and a sister Judy Guernsey of Fife, Wash. Mary was preceded in death by son, Brett A. Mehlhoff.

There will be a celebration of her life on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015 at 11 a.m. in Fern Hill Funeral Home’s Chapel

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Rosa “Mammy” Mae Wampler

Rosa “Mammy” Mae Wampler, age 77, a longtime resident of Raymond, Wash., passed away peacefully at home into the arms of her Savior on Oct. 28, 2015. She will be forever missed by her family and friends.

Rosa was born on Dec. 10, 1937, in Pound, Va. to William and Lydia Collins. Due to her step-father’s illness, she did not finish high school. Instead, she worked to support her family. Rosa met the love of her life, Paul Wampler, at church when they both were quite young. They began dating when she was 18 and they became husband and wife five months later.

Rosa was a long-time member of Crossroads Assembly of God where she taught Sunday school for 45 years and was actively involved in the church’s women’s ministries. She was also a member of the Red Hat Society. A homemaker at heart, Rosa enjoyed cooking —- especially holiday meals; taking trips to Mount Rainier with “Daddy” Paul, reading, traveling to Barry Manilow concerts with daughter, Deborah; and hosting family events. No one could prepare a Thanksgiving or Christmas meal like Mammy!

Most of all, Rosa shined when she could spend time with her precious grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her beaming smile and warm embraces for each of them will never be matched and will never be forgotten.

Rosa is survived by her husband, Paul Wampler, of Raymond. They were married Aug. 25, 1956 - 59 beautiful years. She is also survived by her sister, Dreama Barnett, of Lake Wales, Fla.; four daughters, Diane Hadi and husband, Kourosh, of Bothell, Wash.; Deborah Johnson and husband, Randall, of Bothell, Wash.; Paula Gonzalez and husband, Arturo, of Adna, Wash.; and Dreama Deskins and husband, Gary, of Toledo, Wash.

Other survivors include 10 grandchildren: Jeffrey Wampler and fiancée, Jill; David Johnson and wife, Taryn; Krystal Daw and husband, Jeffrey; Ali-Reza Hadi and fiancée, Rebecca Humphries; Saum Hadi, Leeda Hadi, Rachel Deskins, Matthew Deskins, Michael Gonzalez, and Alanna Gonzalez; and 6 great-grandchildren: Caleb Daw, Katelyn Daw, Aidan Deskins, Gavin Davis, Ismael Idrissi, and Elijah Gonzalez. Rosa was preceded in death by her mother, father, step-father, three brothers and two sisters.

A celebration of Rosa’s life and legacy will be held on Monday, Nov. 2, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Crossroads Assembly of God church in Raymond. A viewing at the church will precede the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Roy L. Johnson

Roy Louis Johnson has been called by many names in his lifetime, some know him as Swede, Lizard, Roy U and Papa, but he is best known as a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Roy passed away peacefully on Monday, Oct. 26, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash., at the age of 76. Roy was a respected and longtime resident of Grays Harbor County.

Roy married Janet Marie LaCroix on March 3, 1971, in Everett, Wash., and she survives at the family home. He is also survived by his daughters, Trudy McCaffrey of Montesano and Kathren Linke (Mark) of Central Park; his grandchildren, Brina Hampton, Regina Hampton, Samantha Johnson; 13 great-grandchildren; his sister, Karen Coffee (John); his brother, Dale Johnson; his sister, Jaycee DeWees (Jim), and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Perry Johnson (Julie).

Roy was born on March 16, 1939, in Tacoma, Wash., to Gus and Bernice (Backman) Johnson. He graduated from Everett High in 1957. Following high school he joined the United States Marine Corps with his friends where he proudly served for four years and was honorably discharged in 1963.

Following his military service, he returned to Everett where he worked for Adolf Gerhig Construction. In the mid 1960’s he moved to Hoquiam and took up employment at Harold Schmidtke Construction. Roy also worked for Jack Root Construction and helped build the Loggers Playday float. He worked for the Grays Harbor County Housing Authority until he retired.

Roy was an active member of the Masonic Lodge #52, F&AM; a Master Mason; a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite KCCH; belonged to the Shrine Temple in Tacoma, Wash.; the Grays Harbor Afifi Shrine Patrol; a member of the Hoquiam Elks and the Hoquiam Eagles.

Roy was a true outdoorsman. He went on annual fishing trips with his lifelong friends in Canada; hunting, mushroom picking (the hunters consolation prize), clam digging and dragging the grandkids out for berry picking (don’t get to go home unless your bucket’s full). He loved to go bowling and was on league teams for years, was an amazing story teller, a great friend, always there when you needed him, and would give you the shirt off his back if you asked. Roy was loved greatly and will be missed dearly, but we will always have a place for him in our prayers and in our hearts.

We ask that instead of flowers that you would please make a donation to the Shriners Hospital for Children or to the Central Park Fire Fighters Association, EMT Fund, PO Box 332, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

A celebration of his life service will be held at a later date.

Richard S. Zuray

Richard Stanley Zuray, 77 years of age and a resident of Ocean Shores, Wash. for the past eight years, died on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2015, at his home in Ocean Shores. He was born on Feb. 27, 1938, in Alverda, Pa. to Frank and Ava C. (Chapman) Zuray.

He was raised and attended school in the Lomita, Calif. area.

He began working in construction and was working in Kentucky when he met Norma J. Langley. They were married on June 27, 1959. He then worked on dam projects in Greenup, Ky., Paducah, Ky. and then in Oklahoma. The couple’s next move was to Seattle where he began his profession as a police officer with the Seattle Police Department and he retired from there after 27 years.

Richard and his wife, Norma, traveled about North America and Central America by car, airplane and cruise ship. He enjoyed woodcarving projects, golfing and working on the family home. He loved God and his family and was a member of the Ocean Shores Baptist Church.

Richard Zuray is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Zuray of the Ocean Shores family home; two sons, Richard Scott Zuray of Renton and Joshua James Zuray of Snoqualmie; one daughter, Robin Christine Zuray of Kirkland; ten grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one sister, Betty Smith of Cedar Lake, Ind. and other relatives.

A graveside service was held at 1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2015, at the Sunset Memorial Park in Hoquiam.

A celebration of his life service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 7, 2015, at the Ocean Shores Baptist Church, 625 Point Brown Avenue NW, with Pastor William Long officiating at the services.

Direction is by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam.
