Don Crocker

Don S. Crocker, a longtime resident of Aberdeen, died Sunday, Nov. 22, 2015, at his home in Aberdeen. He was 74.

He had been employed for Grays Harbor Paper until its closure in 1992. He then worked for the Department of Housing and Urban Development until retiring in 2000.

A celebration of life gathering is being planned and will be announced in a later edition of The Daily World.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Edna (Tiny) M. Watt

Edna (Tiny) Marie Watt, 89, a South Bend resident was called home by the Lord on Nov. 19, 2015. Edna had recently been a resident at the Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam. Edna Watt was born July 11, 1926 in International Falls, Minn. to Peter and Etta (Miller) Nadeau.

Edna Watt married her husband Addy Watt at International Falls, Minn. in October of 1945, he died in 2006.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in South Bend. Was very active with the Special Olympics, Volunteering and was recipient of the Special Olympics Parent of the year award. She was a kind and loving person and her family meant the world to her. Edna always found the positive side to any adversity she was faced with. Edna enjoyed her grandchildren and all the holiday gatherings’ that brought family together.

Addy and Edna had 10 children. Elizabeth, Jeff, James, Ernie, Terry, and Mike preceded her in death. She is survived by two daughters Suzanne (George) Mullins of Aberdeen and Eunice (Neil) Schaak of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sons Patrick of Seattle and Carl (Kathy) of South Bend; two sisters Janet Neimi of Gilbert, Minn. and Mitzi Ranta of Duluth, Minn.; two brothers John Slatinski of Ericksburg, Minn. EZ Rollin of South Bend, numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

Memorial services are set for Noon Dec. 12 at the First Baptist Church in South Bend.

Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Charles F. Gros

After a long, hard-fought battle with cancer, Charles F. Gros has passed away. He went quietly, in his sleep at home early Friday morning. He was 71.

Mr. Gros was born in Germany during the aftermath of World War II in 1944. He lived there until he was adopted by an American Army officer and came to America and was granted citizenship. Being the son of an Army officer, Chuck moved frequently during his young years living, at various times, in Arizona, Minnesota, and California where he graduated from high school in 1963. He then enlisted into the US Navy and served until 1967 spending most of his enlistment on the U.S.S Kitty Hawk.

When he completed his naval service Chuck returned to California and enrolled at California State College, Hayward. At the end of 1970 he graduated with a bachelors degree in sociology and moved to Oregon where he met and married Dianne Roth. In 1973 he became a father with the birth of his first son Ryan and again in 1975 with the arrival of his second son Kevin.

In 1977 Chuck earned a Masters of Arts in teaching and counseling from Lewis and Clark College in Oregon and began working as a teacher. He moved to Astoria where his love of boats was rekindled and he began spending summers and weekends as a charter boat captain. In 1979 He and Dianne divorced. Chuck continued teaching and running charters eventually leaving teaching completely and opening his own charter business in northern California.

In 1990 Chuck re-entered public service when he began his final career with the Department of Corrections in Oregon. In 1992 Chuck moved to Elma, Wash. and began working for the Department of Corrections. While in Elma he met and married Louise Shoemaker-Gros in 2007. In 2008 Chuck retired from the Department of Corrections and remained in Elma spending his days boating and traveling with his wife Louise.

He was a member of the VFW, Eagles, and Montesano Moose. He loved fishing, boating, shooting pool, anything from Germany, and the Oregon Ducks football team. He is survived by his wife Louise, sister Erna, sons Ryan and Kevin, grandchildren Noah, Nicholas, Molly, Cooper, and Riley. Last but not least the locals that began as strangers but became family. Rack ‘em up.

Jackie L. (Kaas) Collins

Jackie Lee (Kaas) Collins, 82, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen, Wash.

Jackie was born on May 10, 1933, to Logan and Paula Kaas in Forks, Wash. She attended elementary school and high school in Forks and graduated from Forks High School in 1951. She attended Western Washington College in Bellingham, Wash.

Jackie married the love of her life, Paul Ray Collins, on Sept. 20, 1958, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; they made their first home in the Seattle area.

In 1966, Paul took a job with Ketchikan Pulp Company in Thorne Bay, Alaska, and in 1968, Jackie and their three children flew from Seattle to Annette Island on Western Airlines and transferred to a PBY, landing in the waters of Tongass Narrows. Four hours later, they flew on Weber Air to Thorne Bay, Alaska. She worked as a school secretary at the school in Thorne Bay. In 1971, they moved to Ketchikan, where she worked as a bookkeeper for Wingren’s Food Store and Tatsuda’s, then later, Karlson Motors.

In 1996, after Paul’s retirement, Jackie and Paul spent many years traveling throughout the United States and Canada, enjoying trips and “Brothers’ Day” gatherings with their brothers and their wives. They purchased a home in Ocean Shores, Wash., where they lived together until her death. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with family and friends at First Lutheran Church in Ketchikan in 2008.

Jackie was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Auxiliary No. 162 for 34 years. She was a Past Alaska State Auxiliary President, a Past Pacific Northwest Regional President and is listed in the Alaska State Auxiliary Hall of Fame. Throughout her membership in the Eagles Auxiliary, she was a strong advocate for fundraising efforts to reinvest in the community and she demonstrated to her family the importance of volunteerism.

Jackie loved to read, and could always be found with a book in her hand. Hummingbirds were her favorite. Jackie was a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and great-grandmother; and a faithful friend to many. She was always proud of the accomplishments of her children. She never forgot a birthday, an anniversary, or a holiday. Her family could always count on receiving a card in the mail in advance of a special occasion. Family was the most important thing to her.

She is survived by her husband, Paul, of 57 years; her daughter Jody (Don) Norris, Spokane, Wash.; sons Kurt Collins, Coffman Cove, Alaska, and Eric (Johanna) Collins, Ketchikan, Alaska; brother Larry (Sharon) Kaas, Ocean Shores, Wash.; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held in Ketchikan at a later date.

Martha “Lena” York

Martha “Lena” York passed away Nov. 15, 2015 in Olympia, Wash., at the age of 89. She was the daughter of Everett and Ila Alford, and was born May 12, 1926 in Niangua, Mo. In 1946 she married Nelson York, they had five children.

A celebration of life will be held for Martha at 11 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5 at the First Baptist Church, 729 Eklund Avenue, Hoquiam, Wash. A reception will follow at the church.

Dr. Stephen P. Uhler

Dr. Stephen P. Uhler, husband, father, grandfather, veterinarian and humble servant of Christ Jesus, died on Nov. 15, 2015, at his home in Puyallup, Wash., surrounded by his wife and children. He was 67 years old.

Dr. Uhler was known to many as a humble Christian servant, and a compassionate and skilled veterinarian, often giving his time, energy and passion in service to others.

Born on April 3, 1948, on an Army base in Yokohama, Japan, he grew up in Tucson, Ariz., attended veterinary school at Washington State Universit, and practiced medicine in Nevada, Arizona and Washington (Aberdeen and Sumner).

Dr. Uhler was preceded in death by his parents, LTC (R) David M. Uhler I and Frances Broadbent Uhler, as well as his brother and best friend, David M. Uhler II.

Dr. Uhler will be dearly missed and is survived by his wife of nearly 43 years, Rhonda Payne Uhler, his four children: Justin P. Uhler (Jessica) of Tacoma, Wash., Adam T. Uhler (Catherine) of Buckley, Wash., Whitney D. Cox (nee Uhler) (Matthew) of Lynnwood, Wash., and Hillary F. Uhler-Powell of Sumner, Wash.; 10 grandchildren, whom he greatly loved and cherished; his two sisters, Marian DesRoches (Robert) of Medical Lake, Wash., Judy Mahaffey (Rodney) of College Place, Wash., and his sister-in-law, Terri Uhler of Clarksville, TN; his in-laws, William and Velta Payne of Surprise, Ariz., and his brother-in-law, Timothy S. Payne (Stephanie), as well as numerous, much loved nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (www.pulmonaryfibrosis.org).

Memorial services to be held on Friday, Nov. 20, 2015, at Station House 726, 427 North Meridian, Puyallup, WA 98371. Reception to follow.

Michael James “Mike” Smith

Michael James “Mike” Smith, 70, a longtime Harbor resident, died at Swedish Medical Center in Seattle on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015. He was born in Aberdeen, July 21, 1945, the son of James W. and Lillian Florence (Shipp) Smith. He was raised in Wishkah Valley and graduated from Wishkah Valley High School in 1964.

He joined the Army right out of high school and upon his discharge returned to the Harbor and worked for Long’s Foundry in Hoquiam for 16 years. He would also work at the Little Hoquiam Boat Shop for five years, janitorial work and would deliver papers for the Seattle PI until ill health forced his retirement in 1996.

Mike enjoyed many hours at the Hoquiam Senior Center playing pinochle on Monday and Friday. He also enjoyed bowling, bingo, puzzles and pool.

He is survived by a son, Stewart Smith, of Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Kim and husband Ken Daniels of Central Park and Roxanne and husband Mike Warren of Modesto, Calif.; half-sisters Patty Rooker of Montesano and Betty Piersol in Arizona; an aunt, Dorothy Justice of Selah, Wash. and also three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by two brothers, William Smith and John Gilland, and a sister, Judy Prince.

A potluck celebration of his life is being planned for 2 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2, at the Hoquiam Senior Center. An inurnment with military honors at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent is being planned and will be announced at a later date.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Hoquiam Senior Center, 703 Simpson Ave., Box A, Hoquiam, WA 98550

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.

Carmen L. Johnson

Carmen L. Johnson, 72, passed away Nov. 20, 2015, at her home in Brooklyn, Wash. She was born July 6, 1943, in Aberdeen to Matt and Marlyss (Durand) Schlesser. She grew up on a farm on North River, attended school there and graduated from North River High School. On July 22, 1961, she married her high school sweetheart, Russell E. Johnson. They had two sons.

She worked as a teacher’s aid at North River School for four years and in 1981 she started working for Shirley Patterson at the Montessori Pre-School in Aberdeen. Upon Shirley’s retirement, Carmen continued to run the school, retiring herself in the spring of 2014.

Carmen was an active member of North River Grange, North River Food Bank and North River CERT; also a member of Grays Harbor Genealogy Society. Her hobbies were gardening, canning, quilting, crafting and genealogy.

Carmen is survived by her two sons Theodore W. of Brooklyn and Gregory D. of Leesville, La.; sisters Karen (Howard) Richards of Clayton, Wash., Marit Stanley of Deer Park, Wash., Haldis (Bob) Sholes of Brooklyn, Ladelle (Chuck) Henson of Lacey, Wash.; brothers James of Rochester, Robert of North River, David of North River and Dan of Aberdeen; also a half-sister Dorothy Tinker of Des Moines, Wash. She was preceded in death by husband Russell (2010) and grandson Aaron D. (1996).

Memorial donations are suggested to the Artic Fire Dept., 713 North River Rd., Cosmopolis, WA 98537 or North River Food Bank, 2597 North River Rd., Cosmopolis, WA 98537.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015, at North River Grange in Brooklyn, with a potluck to follow.

Anne Marie Haynes

Anne Marie Haynes, 80, a resident of the Harbor for many years, died at her home Monday, Nov. 24, 2015.

She was born in Norway and came to Grays Harbor at the age of 20. She had been a registered nurse.

A service is being planned for later next week and a more complete notice will appear in The Daily World.

Arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Donna Sunderland

Donna Sunderland of Aberdeen died Thursday, Nov. 26, 2015, at her home. She was 54.

Arrangements are by McComb &Wagner Family Funeral Home &Crematory in Shelton.

Audrey M. Strasser

ELMA — Audrey May Strasser, 88, a longtime Elma resident, died at Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

She had been an executive secretary for Weyerhaeuser.

A memorial service being planned for a later date and will be announced with more complete information in The Daily World.

Arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Helen M. Swanson

Helen Mae Swanson, 91, a Westport resident for many years, died at Karr House in Hoquiam on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

She had been a secretary and bookkeeper in offices in Westport and Aberdeen.

Arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Betty Jo Bastin

Betty Jo Bastin, 81, a 50-year resident of the Harbor, died at the home of her son, Dr. Brian McGregor, in Aberdeen on Wednesday, Nov. 25, 2015.

She had been the executive assistant to State Representative Bob Basich for many years.

A memorial service is being planned and a more complete notice will appear later in The Daily World.

Arrangements are by the Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Clayton L. Wilson

Clayton Leroy Wilson, 68, of Montesano, Wash., passed away on Nov. 24, 2015, at Taholah, Wash.

Clay was born in Long Prairie, Minn. on Feb. 17, 1947. Clay attended Moclips High School, and was drafted into the United States Military in 1965, where he served his term in Vietnam.

After military service Clay worked in timber products as a shake and shingle sawyer and a petroleum refinery at Anacortes, Wash.

Clay is survived by four children, four grandchildren, brother and sister, two nephews and three nieces and numerous friends. His parents Lyle and Madge Wilson preceded Clay in death.

A celebration of life will be held at the VFW, 407 7th Avenue, Hoquiam, Wash. on Friday, Dec. 4 at 6 p.m.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary.

Katherine E. Jones

On the evening on Nov. 27, 2015 Katherine Esther Jones passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, in Centralia, Wash. at the age of 93.

Katherine was born in Hillsboro, Ore. on Aug. 1, 1922 to parents Harry Hilts and Bessie Conway. She grew up in Cheyenne, Okla. and it was there that she met the love of her life, James W. Jones. They married in 1940 in Dill City, Okla., then moved to Raymond, Wash., where they spent the next 66 years happily married .

Anybody with the good fortune to meet Katherine found out what an amazing cook she was. This lifelong passion for cooking began in Raymond, where she first worked at a Greek restaurant, the Raymond School District, and Bridges Inn.

Katherine spent her life helping others. She was an active member of the Baptist Church and her door was always open. Anybody that came to visit was greeted with a warm smile and the same question, “What can I get you to eat?” Katherine was known to have a freezer full of apple pies, just in case somebody stopped by. She was happiest when surrounded by family and friends and her unconditional generosity touched the lives of everybody she met.

Katherine loved family traditions. One of her favorite traditions, treating her family and friends to biscuits and gravy, lives on to this day as it is commonly requested by all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren!

Katherine is preceded in death by her husband, Jim (JW) in February 2007, father, Harry, mother, Bessie, and brother, Bob Hilts.

Katherine is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Ray Gundersen, son, Ron Jones, sister, Joyce Shelton, four grandsons, Erric Jones, Adam Jones, Jeff Gundersen, Brian Gundersen, six great-grandchildren, and numerous cousins, other relatives, and close friends.

A funeral service is planned for 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at the Baptist Church in South Bend, with a graveside serviced to follow. Donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at www.alz.org/join_the_cause_donate.asp or Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 96011, Washington DC, 20090-6011.

Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.
