Anne Marie Haynes

Longtime Hoquiam resident, Anne Marie Haynes, passed away in her home Tuesday evening, Nov. 24, 2015, with family at her side. She was 80 years old.

Anne was born Nov. 14, 1935, near Sandnes, Norway, to Olette and Konrad Heigre and grew up on the family farm. After finishing school, Anne worked as a self-taught accountant for a Sandnes auto dealer and completed a course of study in the Norwegian domestic arts on the Island of Finnøy.

Anne immigrated to the United States alone in 1956, sponsored by her uncle, Emil Hegre, and his wife Emma, of Grayland. She arrived in New York, and rode a bus to Grays Harbor. She enrolled in Aberdeen High School and earned a diploma in 1958 while learning English and working full-time as a live-in housekeeper. She proudly became a U.S. Citizen.

Anne helped her Uncle Emil and Aunt Emma for years on their cranberry bog, where she met Robert Haynes of Grayland. They married at Twin Harbors Lutheran Church in 1959, settled in Hoquiam, and had three children. Anne worked briefly as an LPN. When Robert died in 1976, Anne raised their children alone and supported them through advanced college degrees.

At age 58, Anne earned her RN degree, graduating with honors from Grays Harbor Community College. She enjoyed a 15 year career in home healthcare, where she tirelessly cared for those who needed her, and formed many lasting friendships.

Anne was a woman of numerous interests, and personified the idea that anything worth doing was worth doing well. She excelled in traditional Norwegian arts of needlework and baking. She was a member of the Grays Harbor Sons of Norway Lodge wherein she had many friends and was stalwart in the kitchen for annual events spanning 50 years. She was a devoted gardener; in addition to her own large garden, she tended the rose garden at Saron Lutheran Church for many years. She loved the beach: solitary walks and digging clams. She loved animals, especially cats. She thrived on making others happy.

Anne is survived by her brother Kåre Heigre, of Sandnes, Norway; son David Haynes (Christine Stanfel) of Owensboro, Ky.; daughter Laurie Haynes and son Erik Haynes of Phoenix, Ariz.; and grandson Evan Haynes of Vancouver, BC, Canada. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Haynes and her parents.

The family asks that donations be made in memory of Anne Haynes to the YMCA of Grays Harbor, 2500 Simpson Avenue, Hoquiam, WA 98550.

A private family graveside service will be followed by a public memorial service and reception at Saron Lutheran Church, 708 8th Street in Hoquiam at one o’clock on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2015. All of Anne’s friends are invited to join her family to celebrate the life of our remarkable Mom and Mormor.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

He was a Democrat and a Christian and those values guided everything he did in life. He helped so many people in so many ways, in his dental practice he treated people who needed help and couldn’t pay, amounting to thousands of dollars yearly. If a friend or neighbor needed help, he was there for them no matter what time, what task or how much. He hired the homeless in addition to donating too many charities.

Besides his love of dentistry, Harold loved to build things. He built three barns and the pride of his life- his house. He milled the beams from wood from timber off his farm and labored for 10 years, almost finishing it before his death. He was a hand’s on guy who knew a lot about everything given enough time.

He is deeply missed by all who knew him. If he could tell everyone who loved him, he would say: If you have type 2 diabetes, HBP or sleep apnea, please deal with ASAP! Because, life is worth it.

As recently as September, 2015, he harvested a trophy Roosevelt Bull Elk in the Quinault Lake area. Wayne is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jenny, and twin daughters Kelly Gradwohl (Jack) of Mukilteo and Shelley Willet (Noel) of Montesano and a grandson, Kyle Backholm and his fiancé, Mia Gribble, also of Mukilteo, as well as a step-sister, Judy Kay Brenke, of Tacoma. Wayne’s brother, Dean Loyal Jamison, and parents preceded him in his death.
