Carlton Rhoades

Carlton was born July 13, 1929, in South Bend, Wash. He grew up in a small fishing village on Willapa Bay that was homesteaded by his ancestors in the 1860s. He passed away on Dec. 6, 2015, at age 86 in Tacoma, where he had resided for 23 years. In between, he lived a full life and left a legacy of dreams pursued and attained.

He married Lois Steele on Aug. 19, 1950, after they met as students at the University of Washington.

He served in the Army during World War II and attended the University on the GI Bill.

In addition to Lois, he is survived by three children, Victoria, Theresa, and Stuart and his sister Anna Mae Strong.

Carlton earned his degree in engineering in 1953 and spent his career in aero-engineering with Boeing, Philco-Ford, Northrup and Rocketdyne.

He was fascinated with airplanes and flight from the time he was a small boy. He often told the story of watching a small plane fly over a field where he grew up and how it awed and inspired him. As an adult, he earned his private pilot’s license and achieved a lifetime dream when he owned a small aircraft, his beloved N5115K.

He had a deep and abiding love of the mountains, an affinity he passed on to all his children. He climbed Mt. Rainier seven times, as well as many other mountain peaks in Washington State. He knew the mountain ranges like the back of his hand and he could gaze out upon those ranges and rattle off the names of each peak. He enjoyed sharing that love of the mountains by teaching mountain climbing classes and participating in search and rescue.

He was an avid reader and writer. His non-fiction was published and he was creating fiction stories into his final years. He especially enjoyed attending writer’s conferences where he met other writers and he was frequently asked to speak at conferences. His specialty was science and science fiction writing with an especially keen interest in asteroids. He presented several times on the asteroid threat at International Space Development Conferences.

He was a Chinook Tribal member and he was active with the tribe, serving as Tribal Chairman for the Chinook Tribe as well as Chairman of the Allottees of the Quinault Reservation. His great grandfather was Chief Huckswelt who signed a treaty with the U.S. Government.

He was active in local politics, especially in his early years when he volunteered for Governor Dan Evans successful campaign. He continued to follow politics and he always had strong opinions, but was open to listening to opposing viewpoints.

He also enjoyed travel and his trip of a lifetime was taking a Russian freighter to Antarctica.

He and Lois traveled a lot, especially after they both retired, taking cruises of months at a time. The travel memories he related most often were of their 50th wedding anniversary when they took a helicopter to a mesa in the Arizona desert and were served an elegant meal and their trip to Bedarra Island in Australia where they took a rowboat to a tiny island every day and had a picnic lunch. Each day they took water to give a palm that had cracked and was starting to take root on the beach. That palm is a tree by now and now Carlton is on his final adventure.

We continue to dream big in your memory and next time you order a cocktail, make it a gin martini and toast a man that had a wild imagination, a sense of humor and big love in his heart for his family.

A memorial service (potluck) will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6, at Faith Center in Bay Center, Wash. Please bring a favorite dish to share, Native or traditional foods are always welcomed.

In lieu of flowers please make your donation to the Chinook Nation, 3 Park St. Bay Center WA 98527. www.chinooknation.org.

Patricia A. Seaman

Patricia Anne Seaman, age 84, a longtime resident of Minard’s Corner near Ocean Shores, died on Jan. 25, 2016, at her home. She was born on May 18, 1931, at the Hoquiam General Hospital to Ralph Gordon and Ruth Ida (Becker) Minard.

After nearly a year of health struggles, our strong, independent Mom has passed away, gone to a place where life is good again.

The first “cowgirl” of the North Beach, she lacked 4 months of being 85 years of age at her passing. As a young girl, she roamed the dunes, the swamps and the beaches with her dad, Ralph Minard, on her favorite horse, Inky, searching for the cows and calves that hid behind the low bush pine trees, and dune grass, gathering them for the many round-ups at the Minard home place. She knew every inch of what is now called Ocean Shores. Using the bay as a fence on one side and the ocean on the other, she shared the responsibility for the welfare of the cattle year ‘round.

Mom went to Ocean City Grade School, was a proud graduate of Moclips High School, Class of 1949, where to her chagrin, one had to play basketball in a dress.

When her father sold the ranch to the Ocean Shores Development Corporation in 1960, life happened, as it so often does, and we ended up moving away for about 9 years, making stops in Satsop, Brady and Vanderhoof, British Columbia. After a divorce and a lengthy trip in a truck with both our horses and all of our worldly goods, Mom moved us back to the beach, where we belonged, and where her life began, again.

Being a single mom, at the age of 40, she took a course in business at Grays Harbor College. There, she met Bunny Ludwig and Dixie Shay. They became fast friends, forever.

In the mid-‘70s, Mom became a school bus driver for Moclips High School. Feared, but respected, many who will read this, will have had the dubious pleasure of sitting on the top step of her bus, where she could keep a close eye on them on the way home to Ocean Shores.

After North Beach, she drove for Washington Coast Lines, which later became Grays Harbor Transit. She was the company’s first woman driver, finally retiring after many years and working her way to the #2 position in seniority. She also drove the Dial-a-Ride bus in Ocean Shores for a lengthy period.

Her life was an adventure. She was born in Hoquiam and brought home to the Minard property where she spent all her final years. She watched her part of the beach grow from sand dunes and scrub pines into the community it is today. She certainly had an opinion about it every step of the way.

And so she passed away peacefully on this property, in her own home at the Minard home place, 75 years of her life spent here. What more can you ask?

She was indeed, a “Lady of the Beach.”

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Patty L. Seaman of Minard’s Corner and Barbara Jean Tolman of Salmon, Idaho; a son Bill Seaman of Minard’s Corner; one sister, Mary Jones of Puyallup; three grandchildren: Jim Giles of Meadow, Utah, Scott Giles of Pocatello, Idaho, Dane Seaman of Fairbanks, Alaska; one great-granddaughter, Kambree Giles, also of Meadow, Utah and a cousin Rae Munger of Chenois Creek, Hoquiam, Wash.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Ronald Erling Solheim

Ron passed away peacefully Jan. 23, 2016, at Providence St. Peters Hospital in Olympia with his wife and family by his side.

Born Dec. 28, 1935, to Beulah and Erling Solheim, Ron lived his entire life in Aberdeen. He attended Stevens Elementary, Miller Jr. High and Weatherwax High School. Ron met the love of his life, Bonnie, in his junior year of high school and they recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary.

Ron served four years with the United States Air Force and four years in the Air Force Reserves. He will be interned at Tahoma National cemetery with military honors.

He was employed for 14 years with ITT Rayonier as a Timber Faller, Crew Foreman and Contract Logging Supervisor. He worked many years for Don Bell Logging, Mayr Brother Logging, Richard Clark Logging and NW Log Marketing. He also owned and operated Ron Solheim Cutting. Ron retired at age 62.

Family always came first for Ron, he loved camping and annual family vacations to Lake Chelan and attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events. His passions also included hunting, fishing, clamming and walking the beaches.

Ron is survived by many loved ones, his wife Bonnie, his son Ronald Bradly (Sandy) of Woodinville, daughters Sharon Bastin (Brad) of Olympia, Jerri Anneberg (Craig) of Longview and Vicki Cloyd (Jim) of Maple Valley, his grandsons Brian, Brent, Scott, Reese, Riley & Connor; granddaughters Jennifer, Jayme, Stefanie, Christen, Erin and Lauren and also several great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Karen Funk and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to send special thanks to Nancy Hoderman (KWA) who cared for Ron and Bonnie over the last few years.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents and sister Lois Parker.

A service and gathering for all friends and family will be held at the Wishkah Valley Community Church on Feb. 6 at 1 p.m.

The family suggests donations in Ron’s memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society or the American Red Cross.
