Lorraine “Sue” Brown, aka Suzie Coonse and Sue Strom

On Jan. 20, 2016, Sue left us surrounded by family. Even clear to the end, she had her quick wit that always made everyone laugh. She was born on Aug. 3, 1936, in Algona, Wash. She attended Hoquiam High School, in the early 1950’s, with her best friends for life, Sharon Sleasman Reynvaan, Sharon said they never got much done in class as Sue was always telling jokes. In her younger adult years, Sue supported Scouting and was a Cub Scout Den Mother. She saw her oldest son earn Eagle Scout and he recently receive the Silver Beaver Award. Another one of her proud moments was when her grandson, Tanner, also became an Eagle Scout and she was able to see it even with her health issues.

Sue was a quick-witted bartender at many local taverns, starting at the IWA hall. She also spent many years working at Kneipp’s Jewelry Store in Hoquiam. Sue enjoyed her younger years at the Harborena Skating Rink in Hoquiam and later worked at their front door so that all of her children could enjoy skating as well. In the mid 1970’s, she was a Hoquiam Police Reserve. Known as an excellent seamstress, she made Hoquiam High School Cheerleader uniforms in the mid 1970’s, never charging, and worked late into the night doing so. Sue also sold Tupperware and Avon products besides working full time. Her children always came first.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur “Bub” Coonse and a stepson, Mike Strom.

Surviving her are her brother, Doug Coonse; her children, Rick Strom (Karen), Cindy Wakefield (Ken), Tina Bittner, Heidi Lopez; step-son, Jeff Strom, all of the local area and a son, Jay Bittner (Tara) of Rancho Cordova, Calif.; 17 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Sue appreciated the Aberdeen Fire Department for their quick response and caring service she received over the last few years of her life.

For the Fire Department’s service and in lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Hoquiam Fire Captain Jerry Gwin’s Fund at Timberland Bank in honor of Sue or to the Aberdeen Fire Department Memorial Fund, 700 West Market Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520.

There will be no services held at her request.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 – 5th Street in Hoquiam.

Phyllis Doreen Nelson Hopper
Dec. 5, 1936 - Jan. 25, 2016

She is survived by her husband, Al; children, Teresa, Linda, Steve and Lisa; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, at City Bible Church, 9200 N.E. Fremont St., Portland.

Duane Frojen

Duane Frojen passed away Feb. 4, 2016, after a long battle with sarcoidosis of the lungs and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Born Jan. 22, 1944, in Cheyenne, Wyo., he attended grade school in Broadus, Mont. His family then moved to Missoula, Mont., where he attended high school and college. He graduated from the University of Montana in 1965.

Duane delivered 200 newspapers every morning at 5:00 for seven years. He wanted to escape snow, and when the superintendent from Aberdeen said they mainly had rain, he decided to move to Aberdeen. One of his favorite memories from his first year of teaching was when all of the kids ran to the windows at Hopkins Junior High. They were jubilant having noticed snowflakes coming down.

Duane taught for two years, and in 1967, he enlisted in the Army. He trained at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana at the time the USS Pueblo was captured by North Korea. He was sent to Seoul, Korea for two years.

Duane saw how the draft impacted families and interrupted lives. He hoped when budget cuts came in the years ahead that those who never served would remember to protect the benefits of those who gave so much, and allow them to a life uninterrupted by any military obligation.

When Duane’s military service was done, he returned to Missoula for graduate work. He was invited to return to teaching in Aberdeen. He did, and in 1975 he met Kay Dombroski, whom he considered the hardest working teacher he had ever known. They were married in 1976 and were big supporters of school activities.

Duane retired from Aberdeen in 1998. In 2000 he returned to teaching because Willapa Valley needed a Spanish teacher. He thought that Willapa was part of the Raymond School District. He only made that mistake once. Duane enjoyed the six years he spent in the small district and the dedication of their staff who filled many roles.

When he retired again, Duane volunteered for PAWS for four years. He was a fan of any card game, his favorites being Wizard and duplicate bridge, as well as cribbage in later years every morning with Kay. A trip to a casino, an event at the Bishop Center or Broadway at the Paramount were all things Duane enjoyed.

Duane was preceded in death by his parents Carolyn (Goodspeed) and Chester Frojen.

He is survived by his wife, Kay; his sister, Charlene, Missoula, Mont.; his brother Wendell and his wife Dorothy, also Missoula; a sister-in-law, Shary Frankfurter, Normandy Park, Wash., and a favorite cousin, Mary Barber of St. Elmo, Minn. who kept him updated on his other cousins.

Kay’s care and hard work allowed Duane to remain in the comfort of his home. Thanks to Kay, his Missoula family, and many loving, loyal friends, there was quality of life when good health was gone. Duane gives a very special thanks to Dr. Philip Gibbs and his wife, Lesley, for being there when help was needed.

The world is a little emptier without him.

At his request, there will be no service. A private burial will be held at a later time at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent. Wash.

In lieu of flowers, Duane suggested memorials be made to his two life-long passions: education and animal welfare: Aberdeen High School Scholarship Fund, 410 North G Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520; Willapa Valley High School Scholarship Fund; 22 Viking Way, Menlo, WA 98562; or PAWS, PO Box 451, Aberdeen, WA 98520.
