Barbara Jean Walter

Barbara Jean Walter, 78, a Montesano resident, died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, Wednesday, March 2, 2016. She was born Nov. 19, 1937, in Sumter, S.C., and had attended schools there.

She was married to Duane Leick. They had four children before later divorcing.

Barbara had worked at the HiHo Store in Puyallup where she met the love of her life, John Walter. They were married in Colville, Wash. on Nov. 3, 1970. They lived on the family farm near Addy in Northeastern Washington. In 1988 they moved to Lake Quinault where she worked as a cashier at Brannon’s Grocery Store in Amanda Park. They returned to Addy in 2006 before coming to Montesano in September of 2012. John died here that November, nine days after celebrating their 42nd wedding anniversary.

Barbara enjoyed gardening both flowers, and vegetables which she canned. She would make floral arrangements and had made the arrangements for her daughters’ weddings.

Barbara is survived by a son: Duane Leick, Twin Falls, Idaho; six daughters: Victoria Leick and Buck Colvin, Addy, Wash., Tina Leick, Chewelah, Wash., Cheryl Leick, Spokane, Jonni and Derek Lisherness, Montesano, Athena and Barry Stenback, Montesano and Donna Walter and Clayton Brundage, Dupont, Wash.; four brothers: James and Jean Brannon, Harry Brannon, of Olympia, Wil Brannon, Pe Ell and Rick and Barbara Brannon, Eatonville; and also 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

There will be a celebration of life at Calvary Chapel in Montesano on April 16, 2016, from 12 to 3 p.m.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, Aberdeen.

Carson G. Boggs

Carson Gene Boggs, a longtime Raymond resident, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at his home. He was born April 6, 1936 in Pound, Va. to Alfred and Lester (Collins) Boggs.

Carson enlisted in the United States Army in 1954. While serving he was trained as a crane operator and helped build several buildings. He was also trained as a Military Police Officer. After being honorably discharged in 1957 he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal. Carson went on to marry Shirley Hubbard on Nov. 27, 1957 in Wise, Va.; together they moved to Washington in 1958. He worked for Weyerhaeuser for 35 years until his retirement in 1998.

He was a member of the Crossroads Church in Raymond, the V.F.W. and a member of the IWA. Carson enjoyed hunting and fishing, carpentry and gardening, he always had a project. He and Shirley traveled around the country to all 50 states; including many trips to see family in Virginia. He loved his grandkids and great-grandkids, most of all he loved to spend time with his wife, Shirley who survives him at the family home in Raymond.

Carson is also survived by two sons Carson (Tena) Boggs of Raymond, Arlie (Sarah) Boggs of Raymond; a daughter Vanessa (Paul) Nichols of Raymond; sisters Mary Jane Sturgill of North Carolina and Violet (Melvin) Corbitt of South Bend; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son Alfred Boggs; brothers Bertrend, Odell, Wilburn, Calvin, Charles, Elmo, Elbert and Don Maurice as well as two sisters Janice Wilson and Geneva Boggs.

Our dad and husband helped too many people to count, he didn’t do it for the pats on the back but out of genuine love and concerns for others. He leaves a lasting legacy of being the hands and feet of God in this world.

Memorials in Carson’s memory may be made to Harbors Home Health & Hospice 201 7th St., Hoquiam, WA 98550 or Willapa Harbor Helping Hands P.O. Box 597, South Bend, WA 98586.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 23, 2016 at Crossroads Church in Raymond followed by burial at the Fern Hill cemetery in Menlo.

Arrangements are in care of Stoller’s Mortuary in Raymond.

Florence B. Hagfors

A memorial service for longtime Aberdeen resident, Florence Bertha Ranum Hagfors, who died March 6 in Olympia, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday in the chapel at Harrison Family Mortuary in Aberdeen.

Beverly A. Cornell

Central Park resident Beverly Ann Cornell died Wednesday, March 16, 2016 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen. She was 75.

A private family service will be held at a later date.

Cremation arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Elliott B. “Mike” Pearson

Elliott B. “Mike” Pearson, 86, a resident of Elma, died at Summit Pacific Medical Center, Elma, on Monday, March 14, 2016. Mike was born in Columbia, Tenn., on July 9, 1929, the son of Ellyard and Fannie Mae (Mammox) Pearson.

Mike, a name given him during his Golden Gloves Boxing days in the Navy in the 1940s, was raised in Columbia. He learned to make ice cream at the age of 15 at a local store in Columbia where he also learned how to drive a Model T Ford.

His dad lied about Mike’s age and at 16 joined the Navy, the start of a 30-year career that took him around the world on 11 ships, passing over the equator several times, serving in three wars, World War II, Korea and Viet Nam, witnessing the first South Pacific Island atomic bomb test and assisted retrieving three Apollo astronauts.

Service in the Navy meant Mike had made his home in California four times, Guam, Florida, Virginia, Washington, Adak, Alaska, and finally Keyport, Wash., where he retired the first time in 1975 but would continue to work for another 10 years hauling nuclear weapons from Bangor Naval Sub Base to McChord AFB in Washington.

With his wife, the former Juanita Ann McIntyre whom he had married in Bremerton on April 24, 1951, they settled in Sequim, Wash. for 13 years before moving to Port Orchard, Wash., for 10 years, eventually coming to Elma, Wash., in 2011.

Mike was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 239, Bremerton; the Fleet Reserve; Bremerton Eagles; Port Orchard Masonic Lodge, No. 98, F&AM; Scottish Rite Bodies, Valley of Bremerton; Nile Temple of the Shrine and the Nile Shrine Clowns.

He loved to clown around and be in parades. He was a ham operator, liked to work on cars and tend to his bee hives. He also held a private pilot’s license.

Besides Juanita, his wife of nearly 65 years, Mike is survived by two sons: Mikel B. and wife Bev Pearson, Quilcene, Wash. and Lloyd R. Pearson, Aberdeen, Wash.; a daughter: Marcella Ann and husband Leo Cormier, Elma, Wash.; and 10 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A step-brother, Virgil Pearson, a brother, James Pearson, a sister, Narvie Palmer-Wall and two step-sisters, Lillian Fisher and Alice Pullen, passed away before him.

A graveside funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 21, in the Masonic cemetery, Elma, Wash. Pastor Sean Hollen, pastor of Harbor Calvary Church, Aberdeen, will officiate. Military honors will be given by the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen, Wash.

Colleen D. (Neva) Hahn

Colleen Delores (Neva) Hahn passed away peacefully in her home on March 4, 2016. She was born on June 3, 1928, in Mount Morris, Mich. Her family moved to western Washington in 1933, and she graduated from Centralia High School in 1946. She attended Centralia Junior College and worked as a dietician in Grays Harbor. She was married to the late Fred Hahn from 1953 to 1973.

Colleen was an avid reader and a snappy dresser who loved hats. She loved gardening and completing crossword puzzles.

Colleen is survived by her son Erich Hahn (Kristen Dahle) and by siblings Lorraine Richard, Gordon Neva (Millie), and Myron Neva. She was preceded in death by her siblings Gene Neva and Marilyn Croker.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, March 19, 2016 at 10 a.m. at Claquato cemetery in Chehalis, Wash.

Loretta A. Williamson

Loretta A. Williamson, a longtime resident of Central Park and Montesano, passed away March 10, 2016 at Grays Harbor Community Hospital in Aberdeen after a short battle with cancer. She was 74. Loretta was born March 29, 1941 in Hagerstown, Md. to Harold Eugene and Anna Mae (Plotner) Houpt and they moved to Aberdeen, Wash. in summer 1958 before Loretta’s senior year of high school. She drove their 1953 Packard across the US with little brother Leonard riding shotgun, following their parents in the custom-ordered International Travelall towing their 42’ trailer. Loretta graduated from Aberdeen Weatherwax High School in 1959 and sister Robin was born in 1960 while her parents were building Robinwood Trailer Park in Central Park.

Loretta briefly worked at the National Bank of Commerce in Aberdeen and married Charles R. Patterson on Sept. 2, 1960. She became a homemaker and raised two daughters Yvonne and Linda. She married Rodger G. Williamson on April 9, 1994 who became her “Teddy Bear” and he survives her at the family home. She worked at auto dealerships as an accounts receivable/payable clerk.

Loretta was a member of Central Park Homemakers, Bunco, and TOPS. She volunteered for Grays Harbor Search & Rescue and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Loretta loved gardening and flowers, especially dahlias, fuchsias and begonias. She enjoyed watching the Mariners and Seahawks play and was also a fan of the NHRA.

In addition to her husband Rodger, Loretta is survived by ex-husband Charles Patterson, siblings Robin Houpt and Leonard Houpt, daughters Linda Graham and Yvonne Wold, and numerous cousins from the Houpt and Plotner families in Washington and the Maryland area. She was preceded in death by her parents in 2015 and is probably making strawberry-rhubarb pies and canning tuna with her mom.

Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. followed by a funeral service at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, March 18 in the chapel at Harrison Family Mortuary, 311 W. Market St. in Aberdeen, Wash. The graveside service will follow at 2 p.m. at Wynooche cemetery in Montesano. Afterward a potluck and celebration of life wll be held at the Country Estates clubhouse, 57 Clemons Road, Montesano at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Loretta’s memory to the American Cancer Society. Funeral arrangements are by Harrison Family Mortuary of Aberdeen.

Robert “Bob” G. Seaman

Robert “Bob” Gary Seaman a longtime harbor resident, passed away on Feb. 26, 2016 at his home in Elma. He was 77. Bob was born on April 2, 1938 in Aberdeen, Wash. to Raymond and Mildred (Wright) Seaman. Bob was raised in Elma and attended schools in both Elma and Oakville.

In 1956 Bob joined the Navy, reaching the rank of Petty Officer First Class. During his time in the Navy he served four tours in Vietnam from 1967-1971 with the Helicopter Attack Light Squadron Three (Seawolves). He was the recipient of 2 purple hearts, Air Metal with 22 Strike/Flight Awards, Navy and Marine Corps Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Bronze Star Medal with Combat Valor, Good Conduct Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal and numerous citations for acts of heroism. Bob retired in 1976 after serving for twenty years.

Bob enjoyed racing 4-wheelers, fishing, camping and boating. He was an active member of the Elma Eagles, VFW and a life time member of The Seawolves.

Bob is survived by his wife Carmen of Elma, Wash.; four sons, Ronald Seaman, Steve Seaman, Terry Seaman and Mark Seaman; three daughters, Bobbie Gunderson, Kelly Downing and Tammy Seaman; two brothers, Raymond Seaman and James Seaman, both of Elma, Wash. and 14 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Sandra Madison and an infant granddaughter.

A service will be held April 23, 2016 at 3 p.m. located at 911 N. Harding Rd., Elma, Wash.

Ronnie L. Simpkins Sr.

Longtime Harbor resident, Ronnie Lee Simpkins Sr., died at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, Thursday, March 10, 2016. He was 68. Ronnie was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dec. 12, 1947, the son of Carrie Lincoln and Hazel (Anderson) Simpkins. He came with his family to Elma while he was still in grade school and would complete his schooling in Elma.

Ronnie worked as a handyman, doing many jobs as a carpenter, landscaping, and as a mechanic. He loved doing furniture restorations and just working with anything mechanical.

He married Georgia Bagnell in 1972 in Aberdeen. They would divorce in 2007.

He is survived by two sons: Ronnie Lee Jr. and Randy Arthur, both of Elma; two daughters: Monica Aasen, Beaverton, Ore. and Melinda and husband James Fisk, Shelton; a brother: Dan Simpkins in Arizona and a step-brother: Jeff Olmstead; two sisters: Gloria Rogers, Olympia and Marjorie Olmstead, Rochester, Wash.; and also eight grandchildren. A sister, Evelyn Austin died before him in 1999.

A memorial service will be held early this coming summer.

Arrangements are entrusted to Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home, 2208 Roosevelt St., Aberdeen.

Sharon Eaton

A memorial service for longtime Harbor resident Sharon Eaton, who died March 3 at her home in Hoquiam, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 26, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Hoquiam, followed by a time of food and fellowship.

The family suggests that any memorial contributions be made to Pacific Beach Community Church.

Arrangements were by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Elliott “Mike” Pearson

ELMA — Elliott B. “Mike” Pearson, a resident of Elma, died Monday, March 14, 2016, at Summit Pacific Medical Center in Elma. He was 86.

He had been a career Navy serviceman and had lived in Elma for four years.

A service is being planned for next week. A more complete notice will appear later in The Daily World.

Arrangements are by Twibell’s Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Ronald L. Spears

ELMA — Longtime Harbor resident Ronald Lynn Spears died Monday, March 14, 2016, at home in Elma died after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was 60.

He worked in the woods as a tree faller and for the past 30 years, has operated his own business, R.S. Fence.

A celebration of his life is being planned and will be announced in a later edition of The Daily World.

A private urn committal will be at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary in Hoquiam.

Lorraine S. Johnson

On Wednesday, March 9, 2016; Heaven welcomed a new angel. Lorraine Susan Johnson, born June 13, 1935, passed away at the age of 80 in Providence Hospital, Centralia, Wash. Lorraine was born in Concrete, Wash., and was raised in Rockport Marble Mount, Wash.

In 1950, she met her husband Frank Johnson and they were wed on July 4, 1951. Frank and Lorraine spent 63 wonderful years together as husband and wife. They moved to Copalis Crossing in 1968 where they built their home together and raised their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Together, they were active members of the community. They brought together the Copalis Crossing Muster Team, helped build the Copalis Crossing Fire Department, and helped out wherever else they were needed. These two became quite the team with the ability to accept blessings, face adversity, overcome, and move forward. They were residents of Copalis Crossing, for 46 wonderful years until October, 2012. From then they moved to Rochester, Wash. where they resided happily together until the day of Frank’s passing.

Lorraine is survived by her two sons Frank Johnson Jr., Tim Johnson, daughter Lori Johnson, 11 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband Frank Johnson, son Terry Johnson, grandson and two brothers.

Graveside services for Lorraine will be held Saturday, March 19, 1 p.m. at Saxon cemetery 11 miles north of Sedro Woolley on Hwy 9, turn left on Doran Road which turns into Bowman Road. A potluck gathering will be held after the graveside service at Samish Valley Grange, 4320 Hwy 9 North.

Enos W. “Bill” Gwin

Enos William “Bill” Gwin, age 91, a longtime resident of the Humptulips area, died on March 8, 2016, at the Grays Harbor Health and Rehabilitation Center in Aberdeen, Wash. He was born on the family homestead in the Queets River Valley on April 25, 1924, the youngest of four sons to John Charles and Erma (Greosser) Gwin. He attended the Queets-Clearwater and Lake Quinault schools.

Bill joined the Merchant Marines in 1942, sailing on steam ships to South America and across the Pacific Ocean to the South Pacific. The manifest of the steam ship upon his return to the states started when he was a “strapping young man”.

After returning home, Bill purchased a commercial fishing troller, the FV Judith. For the next 35 years he spent the spring and summer fishing out of Westport. In the winter, he would work as a timber faller for companies such as Mayr Brother, Tobin & Camus, George Piponius and ITT Rayonier.

On Sept. 26, 1962, he married Davona J. Drolz. They made their home in the Humptulips area and Bill built their home on the Walker Road.

From his early years, Bill was an avid hunter and fisherman. The hunting exploits of Bill and his brothers are documents in the book, “Rain Forest” written by Elizabeth Marston. In later years, it was not unusual for Bill to come home from his fishing troller and to grab his fishing pole and head straight to the Humptulips or Queets Rivers. Until in his late 80’s, Bill would annually cut six cords of firewood for use in the family home. He enjoyed gardening and taking care of the cows on the family farm.

Bill was a 40 year member of the Humptulips Grange #730 and was a founding member of the Humptulips - Axford Prairie Fire Department. At the annual fireman’s picnic, Bill could be found barbecuing the salmon on cedar sticks around the fire.

In addition to Davova, Bill is survived by two sons, Tom of Olympia and Jerry of Humptulips; three grandchildren, Aaron of Bellingham, Jacob and Kennedy both of Humptulips; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents and his three brothers, Glen, Neil and John “Jack”.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Humptulips Grange Building Fund, PO Box 181, Humptulips, WA 98552.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, March 26, 2016, at the Humptulips Grange Hall #730, 32 McAfee Road, Humptulips, Wash. with a potluck for family and friends to follow.

Arrangements are by the Coleman Mortuary, 422 - 5th Street in Hoquiam, Wash.

Nikki L. (Baldwin) Moore

Nikki Lee (Baldwin) Moore, 46, passed away on March 15, 2016. Born Jan. 15, 1970, in South Bend, Wash., to Jim Baldwin and Paula Strago.

Nikki grew up in Frances, graduating from Willapa Valley High School in 1988. Following graduation, she moved to Phoenix, Ariz., where she attended college and worked as a paralegal. Nikki returned home to Washington in 1994 to be closer to family, living in Olympia while working at the Thurston County Courthouse. A few years later, Nikki relocated to Yucaipa, Calif., where she married Kerry Moore and in 2006 gave birth to their son, Aaron. She also worked for the City of Yucaipa for many years.

Nikki is preceded in death by her mother, Paula (Strago) McDonald; grandparents, Paul and Hedwig Strago and Donald and Ramona Baldwin.

Nikki is survived by her son Aaron James Moore (9) of Yucaipa, Calif.; father Jim (Karol) Baldwin of Peoria, Ariz.; father LeRoy (Janice) McDonald of Frances, Wash.; brother Robert (Debbie) Heide of Goldendale, Wash.; brother Chris (Stacy) May of Olympia, Wash.; sister Marci May (Brian McLavey) of Yucaipa, Calif.; sister Mindi (Jeremy) Bond of Florence, Ariz.; nephews Kenny Heide and Andrew May; nieces, Cassandra Bersing, Ashley May, Aubrey Bond, Felicity Bond and Vanessa Bond; best friend and cousin Kim (Fluke) Toepelt and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

It’s impossible to sum up a woman who was so caring, vivacious, loving and sparkly. She enriched the lives of everyone she met. She was loved by so many and her memory will live on with us forever.

Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, March 26, at Fern Hill cemetery in Menlo, with a celebration of life following at the Swiss Hall in Frances.

Ronald W. “Sparky” Markgraf

Ronald Wayne “Sparky” Markgraf, a longtime resident of Aberdeen, passed away on Thursday, March 10, 2016 at the Pacific Care Center in Hoquiam, Wash. He was 75. Ron was born on Aug. 19, 1940 in Colville, Wash. to Emery and Peggy (Wayne) Markgraf. He moved to Aberdeen with his family when he was in the 4th grade. Ron attended Aberdeen Weatherwax High School, graduating with the class of 1960.

During high school, Sparky served in the Naval Reserves, and enlisted in the United States Navy after graduation. He served on the USS Ticonderoga air craft carrier, before being discharged in 1964.

He was started working at Grays Harbor Paper in 1964. On May 1, 1972, he married Patricia Pardee in Reno, Nev. Ron worked for Grays Harbor Paper for many years, until he was forced into medical retirement in 2007.

He was a member of the Highlands Golf Club for many years, until back surgeries forced him to quit playing. He spent lots of time at Wynoochee Wildwood, enjoying building his campfires. He also enjoyed reading and talking with his wife as well as many friends, especially his buddy, Don - Oh, the stories they could tell!

In addition to his wife Patricia, Sparky is survived by his son John E. Markgraf of Aberdeen, Wash. and daughter Julie A. Markgraf of Spanaway, Wash. He is also survived by a brother Donald (Emily) Markgraf and their five children of Springville, Utah. His sister Delores Bravos of Arizona; his sister-in-law Jan Melton; niece Stephanie Melton-Talevich and nephew Lee Melton.

The family asks that memorial donations be made in Sparky’s honor to the Aberdeen Fire Department Emergency Services Donation Fund: 700 W Market St, Aberdeen, WA 98520;

Or the Aberdeen Food Bank: 306 1\2 N I Street, Aberdeen, WA 98520.
