Jerri Michelle Peckham

Jerri Michelle Peckham, 47, passed away Saturday evening, Feb. 14, 2015, at the home she shared with her daughter for the last 12-13 years. She was born Aug. 10, 1967, in Norfolk, Va., to her parents Gary and Juanita R. West (Behrends), and having a father in the military she was lucky enough to see many places around the world.

Jerri moved to McCleary when she was 25 years old and pregnant with her daughter Emily. She found a job with Mark Reed Hospital and worked her way up from working in registration to eventually running the entire medical records department as the manager, working there for the last 20 years. She loved her job and was extremely proud to be a part of the transition into Summit Pacific Medical Center and made many lifelong friendships.

Jerri also enjoyed spending time with her friends, loved cooking (always planning the next recipe she wanted to try), going for motorcycle rides, trying new restaurants — especially ones she saw on the Food Network, throwing the ball to her border collie Cassie, and spending time with her only child, Emily. Being an only child, Jerri and Emily had an extremely special relationship and were truly best friends. They spoke almost constantly and told each other everything. There was nothing that Jerri took more pride in then her daughter and the kind of person she’s turning out to be, and she vocalized the love and the pride she had for her daughter at every opportunity. The last year of Jerri’s life was extremely challenging, but through it all her spirit and determination has been an inspiration to everyone’s life that she touched.

Jerri is survived by her daughter Emily Jacobi (Elma); and Cassie; Jerri’s twin brother, Gary West (Texas); sisters Monika and her husband George Garvin (Ill.); and Patricia and her husband Larry Bonner (Lacey, Wash.). She also leaves behind her other two closest companions; her boyfriend, Arne Swenson (Aberdeen); and long-term friend Terry Bariekman (Montesano). There will be no replacing her in the hearts of the people she touched, her presence will be missed every day.

Celebration of life arrangements will be announced by family. In lieu of flowers her daughter is requesting that donations be made to the Patient Assistance Fund at Summit Pacific Medical Center. Donations may be made at the front desk.

Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Fern Hill Funeral Home in Aberdeen.

Duane M. Stephens

Duane M. Stephens, 80, passed away on Feb. 10, 2015, at Tacoma General Hospital after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage at his home on Feb. 4, 2015. He was born on July 21, 1934, in Sedro Woolley, Wash., to George Wilson and Ila Erickson. He spent many years living in Aberdeen, Wash., where he graduated in 1953 from Weatherwax High School. Duane was employed by Lamb Grays Harbor. He later moved to Olympia, Wash., where he became a business owner of Capital Industrial Inc. He sold the business in 2004 to retire. However, being the hard worker that he was, he never truly retired. After selling the business, he spent his days managing and working on his real estate projects and spending time with his family. He was a long time member of both the Eagles and Elks. Two things that brought him great joy over the years are spending time at Summit Lake, which he referred to as his “happy place, ” and his love for racing.

He is preceded in death by his father, George Wilson; his mother, Ila Erickson; his sister, Donna Ventosa, and step-son, Darrel Hawkins. He is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Irene Manuel Stephens, whom he married on March 31, 1962. Also surviving are his daughter, Delynn Stephens and Mark Neufeld; his son and daughter-in-law, Dirk and Donna Stephens; two grandchildren, Parker and Peyton Stephens; stepson, Jerry Hawkins, all from Olympia; and a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Cho Stephens from Port Angeles, Wash.; a nephew and his wife, Kevin and Erica Stephens, and their two children, Andrew and Katherine from Issaquah, Wash.

The most important thing to Duane was taking care of his family and mentoring and helping friends that he would meet along the way, impacting their lives far beyond what he could ever imagine. He was a man of great integrity, strong work ethics, and a loving and kind soul. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia on Friday, Feb. 20, 2015, at 3 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to the Boys and Girls Club of Thurston County, 905 24th Way SW, Suite A-2, Olympia, WA 98502.

Evan Reed Brown

Evan Reed Brown passed away at his home in Seattle on Dec. 20, 2014. He was born in Aberdeen on Feb. 24, 1940, to Ralph and Catherine Brown, of Hoquiam. He attended Emerson grade school, and Hoquiam Junior and Senior High Schools, graduating in 1958.

While still in high school, Evan and his friend, Dean DeWees, played for many dances around the area with a band called The Raindrops. Evan was a fantastic drummer and was influenced by the drumming style of Gene Krupa.

From these beginnings, Evan went on to forge a career as an entertainer, working with groups such as the Adventurers, Lancers, New Century Singers, Brownie & Ron, The Kicks, Freddie & Brownie, and finally Evan & Charlie Brown (though he and Charlie were not related). This last fortunate pairing lasted for over 20 years, and Evan & Charlie were still performing on weekends up until 2013.

Along the way, Evan discovered he had a singing voice, as well as a natural gift for comedy. The New Century Singers and the Kicks both made several recordings, which did very well at the time. He toured all over the U.S. and did many shows in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe. For several years the New Century Singers were a standing-room-only hit at the Wharf restaurant in Seattle. Later, The Kicks were a featured group on cruise ships traveling through the Panama Canal and up to Alaska.

In 1977, he met the love of his life, Nancy. Evan and Nancy were married in December of 1978, and had 36 eventful and wonderful years together. They settled down in Seattle, and he eventually quit touring. He became Program Director for radio station KLAY in Tacoma. He possessed a beautiful, resonant speaking voice and did many of their commercials, remote and event broadcasts, news and weather reports and interviews with various guests. In addition, he still worked as an entertainer on weekends. Evan’s son from a previous marriage, Jason, lived with Evan and Nancy from the time he was in grade school until he grew up, becoming a talented artist, using blacksmithing skills to create original wrought-iron works.

Having had a bout with cancer in 1977, Evan thought he had beat it for good, but it resurfaced in 2012. He fought this old enemy with courage and spirit right to the end. He kept his sense of humor and enjoyed visiting with his friends, co-workers and family as long as he had the ability to do so. No one was a better or more loyal friend than Evan. One of his old childhood friends had a stroke and developed a memory problem, which prevented him from remembering what had happened only a little while ago. For years, Evan faithfully visited him every week, even though he knew his friend would not remember it. His heart was big, and he was always ready to help anyone who needed it. As one of his friends said, he loved and lived life to the fullest, seeing the good in everything.

Evan was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Catherine Brown. He is survived by his wife, Nancy, in Seattle; son, Jason, of Bellingham; granddaughter Madeline, of Albuquerque, N.M.; sister and brother-in-law Sue and Ken (Wayne) Lane, of Tucson, Ariz.; sister-in-law and brother-in-law Patty and Fred Van Dusen of Felton, Del., and several nephews and nieces.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Christian Church Memorial Fund, or to Providence Hospice of Seattle.

There will be a memorial service for Evan on Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015, at 1 p.m., at the United Christian Church, 300 West 1st Street in Aberdeen.

Debbie F. Swanson Wetherald

Debbie was born in Aberdeen and spent her life on the Harbor. She was a 1975 graduate of Weatherwax High School.

On Feb. 20, 2015, Debbie entered Heaven when she lost her two-year battle with ovarian cancer. She always said she wondered what her next assignment would be and now she knows. She had a strong faith in God.

Debbie is survived by her husband of over 40 years, Quin Wetherald; her three children, Jeremy, James and Gwen; as well as her sister Darlene Bogle of San Jose, Calif.

She lost her parents, Clifford and Faie Swanson in 1988, and her sister, Arlene Stover in 2008.

She leaves behind five grandchildren, nieces, nephews and other loved ones. She has been described as a kind and caring person.

For many years, she was the owner/operator of QD Uniforms in Hoquiam, and loved being able to talk to and help the many nurses who came through her doors. She was heartbroken when her illness compelled her to close the doors to the shop. Her greatest joy was talking with her patrons. She always wanted to be an RN, but gave up the dream to raise her family. She was a nurse’s aide at numerous facilities on the Harbor.

Debbie loved quilting, country music and old time rock and roll. She loved gardening and she was also an avid reader.

She will be missed by all who knew her. There will be no service at Debbie’s request, but she requested that everyone remember her in their hearts.

At her request, in lieu of flowers, please make a donation of any size to a special fund handled by Flowers by Pollen (360)-532-0300, or at any US Bank for the purpose of honoring a special nurse and enabling them to achieve their goals. Acct. is under QD Uniforms Memorial Fund.
