Dorothye Rae (Connell) Logue

Dorothye Rae (Connell) Logue passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2015, at Grays Harbor Community Hospital, at the age of 104.

Dorothye was born at the old General Hospital of Hoquiam on Jan. 17, 1911, to Ray and Anna (Ellingson) Connell. She was a member of a pioneering family that came to the Harbor around 1890. At one time, her family owned six theaters in Hoquiam, Aberdeen and Everett, and three hotels in Hoquiam and Everett. She graduated for Hoquiam High School in 1929, and then graduated from Central Washington University with a degree in teaching.

Upon graduation, her first teaching job was in 1931 at Ocean City. She then taught at Hunters Prairie near Elma. For the next 28 years she taught in Hoquiam at Central and Lincoln Grade Schools. She retired in 1971.

She married Bill Bonham in 1933, and they moved to California. They had two children, Bill and Roberta. They later divorced, and she returned to Washington. She was a single Mother for 4 years and taught for two years at Ardenvoir in Wenatchee. She then moved back to Hoquiam and married Carleton Logue in 1945. They had one son Ed. They were married for 24 years until Carleton passed away in 1969.

She served as President of AARP, Republican Women’s Club, American Field Service, Methodist Church Circle, Hoquiam YMCA Circle 7, and BC Club of Hoquiam, which she was co-founder of in high school. She has served on the Board of RSVP, CAP, Knife & Fork Club, Hoquiam Eagles Auxiliary, G.H. Hospital Auxiliary, and was on the board of directors for Driftwood Theatre from 1969 to 1998, when she broke her hip. She was a charter member and past President of Young Mothers Club.

In 1983 she served as a Senior Intern for the Legislative session in Olympia, and in 1993 she was chosen to be on the Grizzly Alumni Roll of Honor for service and volunteer work in Hoquiam.

In 1992 she received the Volunteer of the Year award from AARP. She was also Senior of the Year for Olympic Area Agency on Aging in 1991. She was also chosen to represent GH County for Senior Citizens as Representative at the Washington State Legislature.

Since her retirement in 1971, she has traveled extensively. She had been on every continent in the world, except Antarctica, and had been in every state in the United States except Alaska. She did not want to visit those places because she said they were too cold. In 1991, at the age of 89, she went on a three month around-the-world cruise with her friend Jane Mezera.

After her retirement, she was very active in volunteer work. She served as a hostess at the local museum and worked one day a week at the local hospital in the gift department. She served as Front of House for 40 years at the Driftwood Theatre in Aberdeen. She was very active at the YMCA, going to water aerobics four days a week until the age of 97 when she broke her hip. She also served on several volunteer boards.

Dorothye loved playing bridge and belonged to several bridge clubs along with playing bingo on a regular basis.

Back in the ’50s and ’60s she was well known in town for her wonderful Divinity, and had her picture and recipe published in the local paper. She also liked to entertain the family with her ability to do the splits. The last time she performed that act was at the age of 90 when her family had to get her off the floor.

Her greatest love was the time she spent at her summer home on Hood Canal with family and friends listening to the Mariners games. She was an avid Mariners fan. She loved to float on a rubber raft along the shore, and she spent hours collecting and shucking oysters. She did it the old fashioned way with a hammer and screwdriver. She could shuck more oysters in 10 minutes than most people could shuck in a half hour. She had a great love of family and was very generous and giving of herself. She loved spending time with her family and had many stories to share with everyone.

For the last seven years she made her home at Channel Point Village where she was loved and adored by everyone. She always said she had “the best apartment in the whole place.” She called it home and enjoyed her time there very much.

Dorothye was preceded in death by her parents Ray and Anna Connell, sisters Annaray Cordy and Margaret Rankin and her husband Carleton.

Jackie continued her friendships with many of her Hoquiam neighbors and P.E.O. members until her death.

When Jackie’s father retired, they sold the furniture store and in 1971 purchased Globe Furniture in La Grande, Ore. Jackie and Henry were active in Globe Furniture until they retired in 1985.

Jackie grew up with seven cousins who maintained a very close life-long relationship. She and Henry enjoyed the annual cousins’ reunions. Janet Marie Reid Anderson

Janet Marie Reid Anderson died Feb. 8, 2015, in Port Orchard, Wash., after a strong battle with pancreatic cancer. Janet was born on Nov. 2, 1934 in Aberdeen, Wash. to Harold (Had) Reid and Marie Schafer Reid. She graduated from St. Mary’s School and from Aberdeen High School. Her maternal great-grandparents, John and Anna Schafer, settled in 1871 along the Satsop River in what later became Grays Harbor County. Her maternal grandfather, Peter Schafer, along with his brothers, established Schafer Bros. Logging and Lumber Company, which at its peak was one of the largest forest product companies in the Northwest. Janet’s paternal grandfather, George B. Reid, was a prominent architect in the Grays Harbor area in the early 1900s. He designed the old Aberdeen City Hall and Library, St. Mary’s Church, the Aberdeen Mansion and many other homes and commercial buildings. Her father, Harold (Had) Reid owned the Aberdeen Lumber Company and was the Richfield Oil distributor for Grays Harbor.

Janet graduated from Mount Vernon College in Washington, D.C., where she was a guest at President Eisenhower’s Inaugural Ball, and from the University of Houston, Texas, where she married Robert Jay Porter. After college she returned to Aberdeen with her two children where she lived for many years before marrying Richard (Rick) Anderson and moving to Seattle. Rick specialized in Trust Real Estate with several banks in Seattle as well as managing commercial properties for many years. They were avid fans of the UW Huskies and members of the Washington Athletic Club, Seattle Tennis Club and Seattle Yacht Club, where they held their wedding reception. Janet and Rick later moved to her family home on Hood Canal where they lived until Janet died. Rick had predeceased Janet in 2007.

When Janet’s children were growing up in Aberdeen, she was an avid follower of their activities and volunteer on their behalf, including serving as librarian for St. Mary’s School. “Mrs. Porter” was a much-loved librarian and is still remembered by St. Mary’s graduates years later. Her position as librarian was particularly appropriate as she had a great love of books and of reading. At any time she was usually reading several books on a wide variety of subjects.

Janet was one of 13 first cousins of the Peter Schafer family all of whom have wonderful memories of summers together on Hood Canal, and of shared Christmases at “Grandma Schafer’s” house on 10th street in Aberdeen.

Another great passion for Janet was the care and training of animals. Early in her life she was an accomplished horseback rider, while later dogs, particularly poodles, and cats received most of her attention. She was an active member of the American Kennel Club/Washington State Obedience Training Club, winning many trial competitions and blue ribbons in both Washington State and Canada. Her annual “Poodle Party” at her Hood Canal home, hosting both owners and over 20 dogs, became a much-loved ritual, especially when Rick took the dogs for rides in the boat.

Janet is survived by her daughter, Dana Porter, and her son, Reid Porter (Debbie), and by four grandchildren. Her brothers John Reid (Carolyn), Sacramento, and Peter Reid (Barbara), Olympia, also survive her along with seven nieces and nephews, and a large extended family of cousins.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in Janet’s name be made to the Washington State Parks Foundation/Schafer State Park fund, the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society of the United States. A private memorial service is planned for her interment in the Schafer family section at Fern Hill cemetery in Aberdeen.
