She was baptized and attended the United Church of Christ. Edith enjoyed drying and arranging flowers. Due to her love of reading, she directed the library at Sunny Acres. Price, Vernon (Jake)

Vernon (Jake) J. Price age 76 of Chewelah, WA died on Monday, September 27, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on September 5, 1923 at Detroit Lakes, MN. Survivors include Wife, Maurine (Mickie) Price Chewelah, WA; Daughter, Diana DeFoer Chewelah, WA; Brother, Ray & wife Dorothy Price Beaumont, CA Grand daughter, Jeme' (Sorensen) Millar Rye, NY Grand daughter, Lee A. Sorensen Seattle, WA. Jake's parents were Clifford and Gladys Price. He joined the Navy in December, 1941 during World War II. After his discharge, he and his wife, Maurine (Mickie), settled in Southern California where they raised their 2 children, Diane and John. Jake was an avid sportsman and made his living in the fishing rod industry. He loved hunting, fishing, archery, and golf. Jake and Mickie moved to Chewelah January, 1997 to be with their daughter, Diane. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Linda in 1947 and one son, John in 1969. Palek, Peter

Peter Palek age 81 of Chewelah, WA died on Friday, November 5, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on May 12, 1918 at Grand Forks, B.C.. Survivors include Brother-In-Law Fred MacDonald Chewelah, WA. Peter came to Chewelah from Nelson, B.C. in 1943 and worked in the Chewelah train depot and then the Valley train depot until the early 1960's. Peter then went to work at the Kettle Falls depot until around 1970. He enjoyed bowling and was a member of St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church at Chewelah.. Funeral service will be held at Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Wednesday, on November 10, 1999, at 11:00 AM with Father, Al Grasher officiating. Presho, Reita (Sally) Mae

Sally Presho, age 68, of Springdale and Quincy, Washington and Quartzsite, Arizona, died on March 19, 2000, after a four month battle with cancer. She was born in Vanceboro, Maine on January 9, 1932. Her father was a career military officer allowing her to learn the love of traveling. She grew up all over the United States and Europe and graduated from high school in Nuremberg, Germany. She met her husband, Weldon, in Camp Roberts, California and were married for 47 years. After discharge from the Service they moved to Searsmont, Maine for seven years. They then moved with their three children to Springdale in 1962 where they bought the farm that Weldon grew up on. They lived on the farm for 22 years where they had the two youngest children. Sally spent those years helping in the fields with haying, canning, raising a garden, and her five children. After all five children graduated they moved to Quincy, Washington where they lived until their retirement in 1994. Since that time they have been traveling in their motorhome. They have traveled around the United States and Canada spending Winters in Quartzsite, Arizona as Snowbirds and Summers at the Nine Mile Resort in Washington. Sally was known for her great sense of humor and jokes. She loved to play cards and board games with her children, grandchildren, and friends. She enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, reading, family BBQ's, and going to Laughlin, Nevada, to gamble and enjoyed the shows. She is survived by her husband, Weldon, five children, Shirley, Shell, Bud, Darlene, and Mel all living in the Spokane area. She also had 22 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. She will be greatly missed by all. Funeral service will be held at Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Thursday, March 23, 2000, 10:30 AM at Chewelah, Washington with Reverend Kathy Cooper officiating. Burial will follow at Springdale Cemetery, Springdale, WA.

Playfair, Mable A.

Mable A. Playfair (58) passed away quietly in her sleep June 22, 2000, after a short illness.

Mable was born September 29, 1941, to Henry D. and Ora Fay (Richardson) Seabrandt in Chewelah, Wa. In her childhood years, she lived in Blue Creek, Wa. , and Kinzua, Or., and graduated from John Rogers High School in Spokane in 1959.

Mable married James B. Playfair Sr. in Chewelah on June 13, 1959. To this union, three children were born, at which time Mable became a loving mother and grandmother.

Mable is survived by her husband, Jim, at the family home. She is also survived by a son Jim Jr. and his wife June, of Lemhi, Id., and daughters Debbie and Anna Marie and her husband Curtis Kenney, all of Chewelah. Mable had five adoring grandchildren who she enjoyed immensely; Mary Jo, Cathy, and C.J. Kenney of Chewelah, and JB and Laura Playfair of Lemhi. She is also survived by her mother, Fay Seabrandt of Chewelah and sister Margaret Tarble of Blue Creek.

She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and loving friends.

Private graveside services are being planned.

The family requests no flowers, but memorials may be made in Mable's name at the Spokane Shriner's Hospital for Children. Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Chewelah, Washington in charge of arrangements.

Pauly, Louise (Mai)

Louise "Mai" Pauly age 71 of Chewelah, WA died on Saturday, August 26, 2000 at Chewelah, WA and was born on October 1, 1928 at Zap, ND. Survivors include Son, Colin Mai Chewelah, WA; Son, Kevin Mai Spokane, WA; Daughter, Edie Mai Spokane, WA; Sister Melida Kuk Spokane, WA; Sister Lorraine Razler Bismarck, ND Sister Emma Roth Bismarck, ND Grandchild Chris Harms Seattle, WA; Grandchild Jason Mai Spokane, WA; Grandchild Melisa Mai Spokane, WA; Grandchild Terra Potts Spokane, WA; Grandchild David Rains Spokane, WA._ Louise married Ted Mai February 22, 1947 at Stanton, N.D. They came to Chewelah in 1957. Ted died November 12, 1969. Louise remarried Louis E. Pauly June 5, 1976. Louis died June 5, 1978. Louise was raised on a farm in North Dakota. When Louise and Ted came to Chewelah she worked as a waitress at the Chalet, Tom's Cafe, Round Up, Yale Hotel, and others. In the late 70's she worked for the Chewelah School District as a cook at the grade school, retiring in 1989. Louise was kept busy after retirement by her grandchildren, which she adored. She was an avid quilter and loved to embroider. She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Chewelah. Louise enjoyed her family and friends and always had open arms for whomever she met. A friendly smile and a plate full of food was ready for all who came to visit. She was loved by many and will be missed by all, friends, family, and extended family whom she touched over the years. Louise was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters: Fred Ude, Hilda Schwarz, Katheryn Roth, Sam Ude, and Eugene Ude. Frances Margry Pearson age 91 of Auburn, WA died on Sunday, October 22, 2000 at Chewelah, WA and was born on April 19, 1909 at Daisy, WA. Survivors include Son, August Pearson Selah, WA Son, David L. Pearson Wickenburg, AZ Son, George A. Pearson Everett, WA Son, Robert Pearson Auburn, WA Daughter, Alice M. Christianson Hereford, AZ Sister Clara E. Hathaway Santee, CA 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Frances was born to Frank and Emma (Morgan) Colburn. She married George W. Pearson in 1926. He preceded her in death in 1970. Frances helped George on the farm in the Summit Valley while raising a family. She lived at Addy, Pullman, and Chewelah. Frances has lived in the Seattle area since 1958. She enjoyed flowers, gardening, and sewing.. Bertha E. Roberts age 65 of Chewelah, WA died on Wednesday, December 16, 1998 at Spokane, WA and was born on April 24, 1933 at Spokane, WA. Survivors include Brother, Joe Schmeller, Chewelah, WA; Brother, Mark Schmeller, Phoenix, AZ; Brother, Richard Schmeller, Phoenix, AZ; Sister, Edna Epley, Pottersville, MO; Sister, Esther Brown Haller, Chewelah, WA; Sister, Gladys Lockling, Republic, WA. Bertha was born and raised in Chewelah. She was a WSU graduate and did graduate work at Eastern at Cheney. Bertha moved to Alaska where she taught school and met John Roberts and they were married. They moved to Bakersfield, California where she also taught school. They moved to Chewelah in the early 1960's and taught school and farmed. She retired in the mid 1980's when her and John moved to Texas. He died in 1989 and she moved back to Chewelah. Bertha attended the Free Methodist Church at Chewelah. She was a member of the Northside Home Ec Club and the Senior Citizens, both of Chewelah. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Bertha Schmeller, and her sister Dorna Steinbach. Survivors include Daughter, Vicky Roskam & friend Dave Susemiehl , Addy, WA; Son, Bob & wife Myrna Roskam, Lenore, ID; Daughter, Patty Arnold & husband Mike Bivins , Valley, WA; Sister, Emma Nichols, Spokane, WA; Sister, Freda Patton, Spokane, WA, Numerous nieces & nephews , Rebakah Lodge Members of Chewelah , 8 grandchildren 8 great-grandchildren 3 great-great-grandchildren Betty was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church at Chewelah and the Chewelah Senior Citizens. Betty and her husband Adam, dairy farmed just south of Chewelah on Roskam Road from the time she was 18 until they retired in 1970. She enjoyed playing pinochle, writing letters, crocheting, rose gardening, and canning. She was preceded in death by her husband, Adam on December 30, 1988 and one son, Bill on February 9, 1992. Margaret Elsie Sizemore

Margaret Elsie Sizemore age 85 of Chewelah, WA died on Thursday, December 3, 1998 at Chewelah, WA and was born on July 20, 1913 at Valley, WA. Survivors include Son, Gene C. Finney, Kettle Falls, WA; Sister-in-Law, Janie Hull, Burns Lake, B.C., Canada, 4 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. Margaret was born at the home of her parents, Eugene T. and Olive Elsie Tarble Hull who lived on the Farm to Market road, Valley, WA. Her grandmother, Margaret Elsie Tarble was one of the early homesteaders in the valley area south of Chewelah in the late 1800's. Margaret was a life long resident of the Chewelah area, graduating from Jenkins High School in the class of 1932. In the 40's she owned and operated the Hiway Cafe on Hwy 395 in what is now the Shanghai Restaurant. In later years, because of her interest in handicrafts and as a member of the Northside Home Ec club, she did occasional judging of exhibits at the Valley Fair. For many years she has been an active member of the Chewelah Rebekah Lodge. Other interest include playing cards, gardening, and baking for her family and friends. Her ashes will be placed in some of the places she loved, including Francois Lake in British Columbia near those of her brother, Tom who died in 1991. She leaves behind many who will miss her generous spirit. Funeral service will be held at United Church of Christ, Saturday, December 12, 1998, 11:30 AM at Chewelah, Washington. Peter T. Skok age 79 of Valley, WA died on Sunday, May 30, 1999 at Spokane, WA and was born on January 18, 1920 at Valley, WA. Survivors include Brother, John Skok Spokane, WA Brother, Jasper Skok Mercer Island, WA Brother, Phil Skok Chewelah, WA Brother, Father, Charles Skok Spokane, WA Brother, Nick Skok Valley, WA Sister Mamie Johnson Spokane, WA Sister Agnes Hurbi Valley, WA Sister Helen Kreutz Spokane, WA Sister Sister Anne Skok Spokane, WA Sister Betty White San Diego, CA. Pete was preceded in death by 3 brothers; Louis, Joe, and Frank, and 1 sister, Willa Chitwood. He served in the U.S. Army in the Army Air Corps and Army Air Corps Engineers. Pete received several service medals; Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal, American Theater Service Medal, Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, and the Philippine Liberation Medal With Two Bronze Service Stars. He served from 1942 to 1945 during World War II. Pete was a carpenter and builder all his life in the Valley area and a short time in Alaska. He was a member of the Holy Ghost and St. Joseph Church and American Legion Post #54. Pete took great pride in his work. He loved to be out in the woods and cut firewood. He was active in the construction of the Holy Ghost Catholic Church and built the rectory at Valley. Survivors include Husband, Vernell Shepler Chewelah, WA Daughter, Robin Dunham Almira, WA Brother, Karl Nett Spokane, WA 2 grandchildren. Erma grew up in Chewelah and graduated from Jenkins High School. She married vernell in 1942. In 1948 they moved to Coulee Dam, WA where she worked in the US Post Office and Credit Union. Joseph M. Sety Jr.age 59 of Spokane, WA died on Tuesday, January 11, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on November 14, 1940 at Chewelah, WA. Survivors include Son, Joseph M. Sety, III Chewelah, WA Son, Mike Sety Ft. Wainwright, AK Daughter, Monica Sety Spokane, WA Daughter, Myla Sety Spokane, WA Daughter, Michelle Peck Spokane, WA Brother, Frank Sety Chewelah, WA Sister Loise Koestner Spokane, WA 4 grandchildren. Joe was a lifetime resident of Chewelah. He served in the US Air Force in the early 1960's. Joe spent most of his life in the electronics field. He also was in the insurance and real estate business. Joe was a member of St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus at Chewelah. He enjoyed collecting coins and stamps, swimming, sports, antiques, and public speaking. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Paul. Funeral service will be held at St. Mary Of The Rosary Catholic Church, Monday, January 17, 2000, 11:00 AM at Chewelah, Washington with Father, Al Grasher officiating. Nave F. Sety age 85 of Chewelah, WA died on Sunday, November 12, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on May 8, 1915 at Chewelah, WA. Survivors include Grand daughter, Sonda Safford Moses Lake, WA Nephew David Sety , ID Nephew Frank Sety Chewelah, WA Nephew Michael Sety , ID Niece Joyce Norman , CA Niece Louise Koestner Spokane, WA Niece Diane Sety , TX, Stepson Gene Safford Moses Lake, WA . Several great nieces & nephews, 1 great great nephew, 2 great great nieces. Nave was a lifetime resident of the Chewlelah area. He owned and operated Sety's Sports Shop for 40 years. Nave married Nancy Safford in 1955, she died in 1979. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Joe Sety in 1995. Nave ran the sports shop and served chili at the old ski hill at Chewelah, and also worked at Safeway. He was a member of the NRA, VFW, American Legion, and St. Mary of the Rosary Catholic Church. Nave enjoyed hunting, fishing, cribbage, cards, and family and friends. He was very generous to various organizations in the Chewelah community. Vigil service will be held at Schanzenbach Funeral Home, Wednesday, November 15, 2000, 7:00 PM . Funeral service will be held at St. Mary Of The Rosary Catholic Church, Thursday, November 16, 2000, 11:00 AM at Chewelah, Washington with Father, Al Grasher and American Legion Post #54 officiating. Vernon Jay Schwager age 49 of Hoquiam, WA died on Tuesday, November 21, 2000 at Hoquiam, WA and was born on May 22, 1951 at Chewelah, WA. Survivors include Parents Jack & Genevieve Schwager Chewelah, WA Son, Zachery Schwager Colville, WA Brother, Les Schwager Addy, WA Sister Vesta & husband Steve Hampton Spokane, WA, Nephew Will Hampton Driggs, ID Nephew Nathan Schwager Federal Way, WA Niece Kelee Hampton Wenatchee, WA Niece Clover Schwager Kent, WA Great Nephew Ivan Joyce Kent, WA. Vern was raised in Chewelah and graduated from Jenkins High School in 1969. Vern served in the U.S. Navy from 1970 to 1976. He lived in Grays Harbor from 1989 to 1993 and from 1996 to the present. Vern worked as a carpenter, modernizing sawmills, and lately as a laborer at Cottonwood Ranch, Copalis Crossing, for Dave Pieper. He has also worked in Chewelah as a carpenter and in sawmills. Vern enjoyed hunting, fishing, and especially salmon fishing. At his request, Vern will be cremated. Neil L. Smith age 70 of Chewelah, WA died on Tuesday, December 5, 2000 at Chewelah, WA and was born on January 8, 1930 at Fruitland, ID. Survivors include Wife, Mary A. Smith Chewelah, WA Son, Shawn Smith Hillsboro, OR Son, Chris Smith Chewelah, WA Son, Brett Smith Chewelah, WA Son, Todd Smith Chewelah, WA Son, Monte Smith Addy, WA Daughter, Laurie Urhausen Colville, WA Daughter, Heidi Smith Chewelah, WA Daughter, Dana Smith Chewelah, WA Daughter, Jody Smith Chewelah, WA . Preceded in death by 1 son, Kevin in 1980 , 25 grandchildren 0 great-grandchildren 0 great-great-grandchildren_ Neil graduated from North Central High School in Spokane in 1949 and was Co-Captain of the football team. He worked for Kaiser Mead after high school. Neil served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1953 as a tank commander in Germany. He returned to work at Kaiser Mead after his tour in the Army and worked there for a total of 15 years. In 1963 the family established the Shoe-String Ranch near Chewelah on Cottonwood Creek Road. The family built all the buildings and fences on the ranch. They raised cattle and logged. Neil's handle on the CB radio was Superman, as he was often called that by his family. Neil was a charter member of the Chewelah Cougar Boosters and a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church at Valley. He enjoyed his family, sports, and working on their ranch.. Funeral service will be held at Holy Ghost Catholic Church, Thursday, December 7, 2000, 1:00 PM at Valley, Washington with Father, Charles Skok officiating. Schneider, Robert Allen

Robert Allen Schneider age 54 of Chewelah, WA died on Thursday, November 30, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on July 13, 1946 at Chewelah, WA. Survivors include Wife, Marie Schneider Chewelah, WA Mother, Millie Schneider Chewelah, WA Son, Robert W. & wife Jeni Schneider Deer Park, WA Daughter, Kellie & husband Mark Sheldon Nine Mile Falls, WA Sister Dona & husband Ron Kulbeck Everett, WA Sister Mona & husband Jerry Sturek Sacramento, CA Grandchildren Andrew, Taylor & Shylo. many friends, and 10 nieces & nephews. Bob was a loving husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, and friend. He had a long well fought battle with cancer. Bob was a lifetime resident of Chewelah. Bob served in the U.S. Navy for 6 years and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed fishing at every opportunity and competing in tournaments. Bob also enjoyed hunting, computers, and photography. He was pursuing his degree in mechanical engineering. Bob worked currently at Northwest Alloys, previously at: Hansen Logging, City of Chewelah Police Department, Stevens County Deputy, Western Nuclear, Arden & Vaagen sawmills, and was self employed. He was a member of American Legion Post #54, and past member of the Chewelah Trap Club. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Bud in 1997 and a son Dusty in 1970.. Funeral service will be held at Chewelah Civic Center, Saturday, December 9, 2000, 1:30 PM at Chewelah, Washington with Chaplin Margaret Retherford and American Legion Post #54 officiating. Tomlinson, John "Tommy" P.

John "Tommy" P. Tomlinson age 92 of Chewelah, WA died on Saturday, January 23, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on August 19, 1906 at Polk, TN. Survivors include Daughter, Pat McCormick, Anchorage, AK; Son, Jim Widby, CA, and 6 grandchildren. Tommy, also known as "Sunshine" came to Chewelah around 1965. He worked at Colville Machine Shop for about 25 years. Tommy also worked on small engines at his home at Chewelah. He was an excellent welder. Tommy made water wheels, windmills, and go carts. He loved building things out of metal. Tommy made the metal bridge at the Chewelah Park and dedicated it to his wife Ruthie, who preceded him in death in 1972. He loved to fish and had a great sense of humor. Graveside service will be held at Chewelah Memorial Park, Friday, January 29, 1999, 2:00 PM at Chewelah, Washington. Schanzenbach Funeral Home P. O.
