Twitchell, William "Bill" Albert

William "Bill" Albert Twitchell age 87 of Loon Lake, WA died on Thursday, April 8, 1999 at Loon Lake, WA and was born on July 23, 1911 at Spokane, WA. Survivors include Wife, Dorothy Twitchell Loon Lake, WA Daughter, Joni Higgenbothan Santa Maria, CA Son, Larry Twitchell Hedgesville, WV 5 grandchildren 3 great-grandchildren. Captain Twitchell, a lifetime resident of the Spokane area, was a distinguished Naval Officer. Having served in the Amphibious Forces throughout WW ll. He participated in landings in both the Pacific and the Atlantic, and in Support Forces during Korea. Bill spent the bulk of the remainder of his thirty five years of service in the Pentagon on such challenging assignments as on the Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Staff of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the Office of Asst Secretary of the Navy for Finance, and the Navy Inspector General. He was the Special Asst. to the Navy Chief of Information at the time of his retirement June 30, 1970. Bill was a noted speaker, and as a member of the National Security Seminar Program, lectured extensively throughout the United States in the early sixty's. He was twice awarded the George Washington Honor Medal by Freedoms Foundation, Valley Forge, and was the holder of the Nation's Meritorious Service Medal and the Legion of Merit. He was born and raised in Spokane, and was a true product of the West. Bill's forebearers were among those hardy souls who made the trip across the Great Plains in covered wagons. He was an Expert Rifleman and Pistol Shot, and loved to hunt and fish: but he was also a conservationist in the truest sense, and wrote extensively of the "woods and Waters" and of the wild creatures that lived in them. His "TIMBERBROOK TALES" are some of the finest examples. Bill was a 1930 graduated of North Central High School. He married Dorothy Virginia Davis of Spokane in 1931. He continued his education in the College of Commerce, San Francisco and San Mateo Junior College. Bill was commissioned an Ensign, U.S. Navel Reserve in 1938, and as a Lieutenant Commander in the Regular Navy in 1946. He graduated from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, with "Distinction" in 1956. Bill and Dorothy had two children: Joan and Larry. Both kids are Navy: Joan the wife of a Naval Aviator: Larry a graduate of the Naval Academy Class of '57. Upon retirement at from active duty, Bill and Dorothy returned to the area and built "GREYSTONE-HAVEN", their home on the shores of Deer Lake where they had owned property for fifty years. They were both active in Civic Affairs of the County and the Lake. Bill being the founding President of the Deer Lake Property Owners Assoc, and a past president of the Southern Stevens Co. Council. He was a member of the Retired Officers Assoc. and the American Angus Assoc. Back in Stevens County after retirement, Bill engaged in a land and cattle ranching partnership for several years.. Vetsch, Lyle A.

Lyle A. Vetsch age 64 of Chewelah, WA died on Monday, January 17, 2000 at Spokane, WA and was born on July 29, 1935 at Waverly, WA. Survivors include Wife, Elaine Vetsch Chewelah, WA Daughter, BaLinda Matlock Omak, WA Daughter, Sandra Stone Jackson, MI Daughter, VaLorie Welch Hillsboro, OR Brother, Lester Vetsch Chewelah, WA 8 grandchildren. Lyle graduated from Jenkins High School at Chewelah in 1954. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. Lyle worked for Safeway from 1960 to 1982. He worked the first 2 years in Colville and the rest of the time in Chewelah. He was produce manager and assistant manager during that time. Lyle was custodian at Jenkins High School from 1983 to 1991 and custodian at Jenkins Middle School from 1991 to October, 1999 when he retired. Lyle was a lifetime member of VFW Post #2047 and enjoyed fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents and one son, Robert.. Mercedes "Migs" C. Williamson

Mercedes "Migs" C. Williamson age 89 of Valley, WA died on Wednesday, October 28, 1998 at Chewelah, WA and was born on February 25, 1909 at Missoula, MT. Migs worked for the Navy during World War 2. She attended the University of Montana at Missoula for 2 years. Migs married Jack Williamson July 21, 1950 at Coeur D' Alene, Idaho, They have lived in the same house at Valley for almost 50 years. Migs worked for Kulzer's store at Valley for 16 years. She enjoyed traveling, ceramics, and her grandchildren. Migs was preceded in death by 1 son, Arvin White, 1 brother, and 1 sister. Survivors include Husband, Leo "Jack" Williamson, Valley, WA; Son, Gail White, HI, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. Wada, Richard Osamu

Richard Osamu Wada age 59 of Loon Lake, WA died on Saturday, July 17, 1999 at Spokane, WA and was born on December 3, 1939 at Compton, CA. Survivors include Wife, Motoe Wada Loon Lake, WA Daughter, Jennifer Wada San Diego, CA Daughter, Ligaya Wada San Diego, CA Son, Roy Wada Portland, OR Brother, George Wada Rossmore, CA Sister Mary Yoshioka El Sobrante, CA. Richard and Motoe came to the Chewelah area and settled near Buzzard Lake after Richard's retirement from Asian Development Bank. He was the Resident Representive of Asian Development Bank at New Delhi, India. Upon his return to the Philippines, Richard was Chief in the Office of Cofinancing Operations at Minila, in the Philippines. Richard had a PHD in economics. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, gardening, old cars, and antiques.. Glen and Evelyn came to the Cozy Nook area in 1957 where they had a dairy farm. They moved in town Chewelah in 1984. Glen was a 65 year member of the Grange. He enjoyed card parties, gardening, and flowers. Glen was preceded in death by one grandson, Scott Cornwall in 1988.. Zbinden, Juanita

Juanita Zbinden age 87 of Chewelah, WA died on Tuesday, April 27, 1999 at Chewelah, WA and was born on September 8, 1911 at Summit Valley, WA. Survivors include Son, Harley & wife Mary Hopkins Addy, WA, Sister, Clara Hathaway Santee, CA, Sister, Frances Pearson Auburn, WA, 3 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. Juanita was born Juanita LaVeta Colburn. She was the youngest daughter of Emma Gertrude and Frank J. colburn, early pioneer homesteaders of the Summit Valley area. Living on the family homestead near the top of the summit, Juanita's early schooling was in the Maude and Summit schools. Means of transportation was by horse or foot, and Juanita preferred the former. As she entered high school, Juanita stayed with a family friend, Mrs. Heller, in Davenport. To get to school, she would ride her pony to the Gifford store, strip it of its gear and send the horse trotting home as she boarded a bus to Davenport for the week. In 1928 Juanita married Harland "Pete" Hopkins, and the couple purchased the Dunn homestead where they operated a sawmill and farmed. A son, Harley was born in 1930. Their home was known for gracious hospitality accorded to all, and an extra plate set at the table usually meant hours of good conservation. In 1965 Pete succumbed from injuries he sustained in a car-tractor accident. Juanita continued to farm until 1969, then purchased a home in Chewelah where she resided for the next five years. In March 1974, Juanita married Will Zbinden, and moved to his farm in Marble Valley. She enjoyed farming and gardening and was often seen participating in the operation of the farm. Will and Juanita enjoyed working side by side, and took pride in their accomplishments. On September 26, 1979 Will died of a massive heart attack. Juanita continued to reside and farm in Marble Valley until 1998, when she returned to her Chewelah residence. Remembered by her friends and family as an excellent cook, Juanita's pastries and hearty meals will be sorely missed. She especially enjoyed making raised doughnuts for the children's Halloween treats, and special occasions.. Castle, Dale E.

Dale E. Castle, Jr. of Chewelah, Washington died on Thursday, February 25, 1999 at Spokane, WA and was born on December 5, 1942 at Danville, Illinois. Survivors include Wife, Linda Castle, Chewelah WA; Father, Dale E. Castle, Danville IL; Son, Kenneth R. Castle, Kennewick WA; Daughter, Teresa L. Castle, Kennewick WA; Son, William R. Castle, Kennewick WA; Brother, Lindsey Castle, Danville IL; Brother, Philip Castle, Danville IL; and 5 grandchildren. Dale grew up and attended schools in Danville, Illinois. He was married to Linda Downing on August 2, 1964 in Danville. Dale and Linda moved to Walla Walla, WA in 1973 and to Kennewick, WA in 1978. Dale had worked for the City of Richland as a mechanic until illness forced his retirement. They moved to Chewelah in 1992 where he resided until his death. Dale was a member of the Chewelah Valley Lions Club, the Independent Order of Foresters, and was a ham radio operator. He previously served as aa community volunteer for the Police and Fire Departments. Funeral Services held on Monday, March 1, 1999 at 10:30AM, at Schanzenbach Funeral Home. Ruth Ida Lindquist age 85 of Chewelah, WA died on Monday, October 23, 2000 at Chewelah, WA and was born on October 29, 1914 at Chewelah, WA. Survivors include Grandson Dale Lindquist Chewelah, WA, Grandson Dean & wife Libby Lindquist Spokane, WA Grandson Lyle & wife Mary Helen Lindquist Chewelah, WA Grand daughter, Vera & husband Marcus Johnston Spokane, WA Grand daughter, Velda Pierpoint Colville, WA, 9 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren_ Ruth was born & raised in Chewelah and spent her time working and making friends in the Chewelah community. She will be greatly missed by her friends and family. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Ray, two sons Lyle and Loyd, two brothers Orie and Roy Heine, her parents Herman and Lydia Heine, and one grandson, Robert Lindquist. God bless her. Bill Flottman age 76 of Addy, WA died on Wednesday, June 21, 2000 at Addy, WA and was born on April 30, 1924 at Bluecreek, WA. Jake A. Kinzer

Jake A. Kinzer, 81, a resident of Tacoma, died of cancer Sunday at St. Francis Hospital in Tacoma, Wash.

He was born on June 13, 1915, to Peter P. and Katharina "Katie" Ottilia Scharbach Kinzer, the seventh of 12 children, in Uniontown, Wash. He was reared and educated in the Uniontown area.

After high school he worked in Uniontown for a time and later worked on the Grand Coulee Dam. In 1936 he moved to Tacoma and was a pioneer in building Puget Sound Plywood Mill. He retired from there in 1982.

In 1943 he was drafted and served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.

He married Maxine Konen Feb. 8, 1945.

He was a member of the St. Theresa Catholic Church and the American Legion.

Jake is survived by his wife at their Tacoma home; two sons, Russell Kinzer of Tacoma and Darrell Kinzer of Renton, Wash; a daughter, Vicki Kinzer-Mason of Leavenworth, Wash.; two sisters, Caroline Frei of Craigmont, Idaho, and Vivian Butterfield of Tacoma; one brother, Ted Kinzer of Genesee, Idaho; four grandchildren; three great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.

Viewing will be Monday at Kimball Funeral Home in Pullman from noon to 5 p.m.

The rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Monday at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Uniontown. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at Tuesday at the church at 10:30 a.m. The Revs. Dan Weber and Lyle Konen will be the celebrants. Burial will follow at Uniontown Catholic Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials be made to a favorite charity.

Lola Bailey Freier

Lola Bailey Freier, 90 a St. John, Wash., resident, died of age-related causes Wednesday at the Cheney Care Center in Cheney, Wash.

She was born on Nov. 16, 1906, Marvin and Ollie Hamblem Harwood in Ewan, Wash. She was reared in the Ewan area and attended grade school at Shyrock School. She graduated from Ewan High School in 1924.

She married George D. Bailey Nov. 15, 1926, in Spokane. Most of their marriage was spent living and working on the family farm in the Ewan area before retiring and moving into St. John in 1974.

He died Jan. 8, 1983.

She married Herman E. "Jack" Freier on Aug. 5, 1984.

She was active in the Ewan Community Church in her younger years; a member of the Eaton Grange, where she held several offices and the Pamona Grange, where she served as secretary; the Ewan Neighbors Club; the St. John Senior Citizens; and an active supporter in the construction of the Whitman Hospital of Colfax, Wash. Lola enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.

Surviving is her husband, Jack, of Fairfield, Wash; three sons, Floyd Bailey, Norman Bailey, and Lyle Bailey, all of St. John, Wash; one daughter, Nancy Hanneman of Cheney; one brother, Mervin Harwood of Lynnwood, Wash; two sisters, Dora Breeden Green of Lewiston, Idaho and Hazel Saddler of Marcus, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; and 24 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one son, Everett Bailey.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church of St. John, Wash., with the Revs. Howard Hopkins and Jack Pea officiating. Burial will follow at the St. John Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the St. John Fair or the St. John Fire Department.

Esther I. Souders

Esther I. Souders, 82, a longtime Crescent-Kendrick, Idaho, area farmer and resident, died of cancer Wednesday at Lewiston Rehabilitation and Care Center.

She was born April 23, 1915, to Axel V. and Lena Brown-Swanson Baack at Big Bear Ridge near Kendrick. She attended school at Kendrick and Crescent.

She married Elmer Souders Oct. 28, 1935 in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. The couple farmed and ranched at Crescent, near Southwick, for many years. Esther was well known as a hard worker all of her life and helped with all facets of the farm work. Her husband died Sept. 22, 1974.

She moved to Kendrick in October 1975 and had lived there since.

She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.

Viewing will be today at Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

A graveside service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Southwick Cemetery. Pastor Robert Novak of the Kendrick Assembly of God Church will officiate.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital in Spokane, P.O. Box 2472, Spokane, Wash. 99210-2472.

May Alice Pratt

May Alice Pratt, 71, a longtime Moscow resident, died of a brain aneurysm Thursday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho. Short's Funeral Chapel in Moscow, Idaho, is in charge of the arrangements.

Mary Edna "Eddie" Victor

Funeral services for Mary Edna "Eddie" Victor, 81, will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Garfield Christian Church in Garfield, Wash. The Revs. Eugene Glatt and King Rockhill will officiate at the services. Burial will follow at the Garfield Cemetery.

She died Wednesday at the Franciscan Health Care Center in Enumclaw, Wash., where she had made her home since June 1994.

She was born April 4, 1916, to William Clarence and Martha Jayne Bonham Dooly at Tacoma, Wash. Her family moved to Sprague, Wash., where she attended St. Joseph's Academy. She then attended Merylhurst College in Portland, Ore.; Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash.; and then graduated from Washington State College School of Pharmacy in Pullman, Wash., in 1940. She married E. Neil "Vic" Victor June 2, 1941, in Sprague, Wash. He worked as a pharmacist in Spokane, Kellogg, Coeur d'Alene, Moscow, Colfax and Walla Walla before moving to Garfield, Wash., in 1951. The Victors purchased the Westacott Drug Company in Garfield and operated the business together as the Garfield Pharmacy for the next 25 years. They retired in 1976. He died in August 1993.

She was a former member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Garfield and current member of St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oakesdale, Wash. She was a member of the Washington State Pharmaceutical Association, the Whitman-Latah County Pharmaceutical Association, the American Association of University Women, serving as the AAUW state historian for Washington. She enjoyed the family lake cabin and model S-gauge railroads. She was also a member of the Church Altar Society and a 50-year member of Alpha Chi Omega sorority.

Survivors include three sons, Gerry Victor of Garfield, Wash., Bill Victor of Kent, Wash., and Ed Victor of Sprague; one sister, Martha Jane French of Stockton, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
