Gilbert 'Gib' H. Hall

A memorial service for Gilbert "Gib" H. Hall will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Masonic Hall, 3219 N. Argonne in Spokane. Hall, 79, a former Moscow resident, died of a heart attack May 20 at Maui Memorial Hospital in Wailuku, Maui, Hawaii.

Louis Douglas McNew

Louis Douglas McNew, 78, of Zillah, Wash., a former Washington State University teacher and administrator, died of pneumonia Friday at Providence Hospital in Toppenish, Wash.

He was born Nov. 7, 1918, to Herman and Matilda McNew in Lincoln, Neb. He graduated from Flint Central High School in Flint, Mich., in 1937. It was there he met his future wife Margaret O'Sullivan. He graduated from Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Mich., in 1941, and they were married in 1943.

He attended graduate school at Washington State College, now university, and the University of Chicago, where he was recognized for academic excellence and inducted as a fellow of the American Council of Learned Societies. He was a professor of English, leader in the field of literary criticism and administrator at Washington State University. He retired from WSU in 1981 and soon after was recognized with the dedication of the Louis D. McNew Lecture Hall.

He was recognized throughout the state for his tireless efforts in providing quality higher education for all people. In 1989 he and his wife moved to Zillah, Wash., where they were volunteer professors at Heritage College in Toppenish.

He loved his family, friends, all of his dogs, and his yard.

Louis touched and was touched by the lives of many. He will be missed and remembered for his kindness.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret, at their Zillah home; his son Peter McNew of Yakima, Wash.; two daughters, Betsy Hicks and Katie Miller; two grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday and requiem Mass at 1 p.m. Thursday, both at the Resurrection Catholic Church, Schooley Drive, Zillah, Wash.

Colonial Funeral Home in Toppenish is in charge of the arrangements.

Verles H. Nealhouse

Verles H. Nealhouse, 75, died today at his rural Pullman, Wash., home. Services are pending at Kramer Funeral Home in Palouse, Wash.

Frank J. Werner

Frank J. Werner, 90, longtime Colfax, Wash., resident, died of cancer Friday at his home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1906, to Charles and Sarah Werner in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was reared and educated in the Grays Harbor, Wash., area. He was a graduate of Aberdeen High School. He attended the University of Washington where he met his first wife, Lois Bassford.

Frank worked as a salesman for many years in the Seattle and Spokane areas. He was preceded in death by his first wife Lois in 1976.

He married Anna M. Schrenk in 1977 and had lived in Colfax for the past 20 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of Hill Ray Plaza in Colfax and was involved in the Whitman County Council on Aging and the local food bank. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Spokane.

He is survived by his wife, Anna Werner of Colfax; two sons, Frank Werner Jr. of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Richard Werner of Greenacres, Wash.; a daughter, Beth Johnson of Johnstown, Neb.; two brothers, Edward and Harold Werner; a sister Marjorie; seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be until 5 p.m. today and from 8-10 a.m. Tuesday at Bruning Funeral Home in Colfax.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Colfax. Burial will be at the Colfax Cemetery.

John C. 'Jack' Bennett

Funeral services for John C. "Jack" Bennett will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Farmington Seventh-day Adventist Church in Farmington, Wash. Pastor Mark Mewhinney of the Latah Country Bible Church, and a grandson, Kirby Dailey, will officiate at the service.

Bennett, 82, a lifetime Farmington resident, died Tuesday at St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute in Spokane, from complications following surgery.

He was born April 24, 1915, to Carl S. and Elva Celesta Baldwin Bennett in Farmington. He was reared on the family farm, attended school in Farmington and graduated from Farmington High School in 1933.

He married Artha Fisher on Oct. 31, 1937, in Farmington where they lived and farmed. He retired from farming in the mid-1970s. He was a member of the Farmington Methodist Church, served on the Mountain View Cemetery board and with the soil conservation district and had been a 4-H leader.

He enjoyed traveling, fishing, woodworking, yard work and his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 59 years at their home; one son, John Bennett of Union, Ore.; four daughters, Celesta Dailey of Farmington, Carleen Angle of Union, Oregon, Janice Roberts of Palouse, Wash., and Emma Sandau of Priest River, Idaho; 15 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Mountain View Cemetery, P.O. 125 Farmington, Wash. 99128.

Robert Ford "Bob" Allen

Robert Ford "Bob" Allen, 59, died Thursday while on business in Kennewick, Wash.

He was born July 5, 1937, to Derril and Georgia Allen in Kellogg, Idaho.

Bob was a member of Eagles Lodge Aerie No 2. and enjoyed traveling in the family's recreation vehicle and riding motorcycles. He was a family oriented man and will be dearly missed.

He was employed as a salesman for Pohl Spring Works in Spokane.

He was married June 30, 1955.

He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Jeanne at their Spokane home; a daughter, Debbie Baltzell of Spokane; a son, Ron Allen of Spokane; his mother, Georgia Allen of Clarkston, Wash; two brothers, Dale Allen of Moscow, Idaho, and Ronald Allen of Clarkston; and three grandsons

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at The Chapel of Flowers, Riplinger Funeral Home, N. 4305 Division St., Spokane with Rev. Jack E. Barker officiating. Cremation will precede the service.

The family suggests memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association, Inland Empire Division, 140 S. Arthur St., No. 610, Spokane, Wash. 99202.

Joris O. Walli

Joris O. Walli, 84, a longtime resident of Whitman County, died at Deaconess Medical Center in Spokane Friday from complications following surgery.

He was born on Feb. 14, 1913, to John and Anna Solen Walli near LaCrosse, Wash. The family moved from LaCrosse to Limon, Colo., when he was 3 years old. He completed high school in Limon then returned to the LaCrosse area.

He married Mary Johnstone Sept. 18, 1941, in Seattle. They lived and farmed in the LaCrosse/Ritzville area.

He enjoyed following the high school activities of his granddaughters. Family and farming were his enjoyments of life.

He was a member of the Selbu Lutheran Church; the Selbu Lutheran Brotherhood; LaCrosse Lions Club; a charter member of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers; served on the Whitman County ASCS for 11 years and the State ASCS for 10 years; was a former member of the LaCrosse School Board; and had been active in the LaCrosse Jaycees when he was young.

Surviving is his wife, Mary, at the family home near LaCrosse; one son, Robert Walli of Ritzville, Wash.; one brother, Justin Walli of Sunnyside, Wash.; two sisters, Magna Slind of Sequim, Wash., and Astrid Horsvold of Limon, Colo.; two grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four siblings.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Selbu Church near LaCrosse with Pastor Dennis Bay officiating. Burial will follow at the Selbu Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be made to the Selbu Lutheran Church or the Washington Wheat Foundation of Ritzville, Wash.

The Bruning Funeral Home of Colfax, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Bradley Day

A graveside memorial service for Bradley Day of Pullman, Wash., will be at 11 a.m. July 19 at Moscow Cemetery.

Day, 77, a longtime resident of Whitman and Latah counties, died at his home Friday from complications of diabetes.

He was born April 22, 1920, to William and Nora Day in London, Ky. He came west at age 17 by joining the Civilian Conservation Corps at Moscow, Idaho.

He served in the military in World War II and he later worked for many years for the Agriculture Department at Washington State College, now university, in the early 1950s.

He married Adeline Doolittle on Nov. 5, 1938. They lived in the Moscow-Pullman area. She died Aug. 25, 1959.

He later was married to and divorced from Eva Marie Morgan of Moscow and Dorothy Edgerton of Spokane.

Day moved from Spokane to Pullman in 1989 to be near his daughter and son-in-law.

He enjoyed spending time with his friend Beverly Morasch of Pullman.

He is survived by two daughters, Amy Riba of Pullman and Debra Tait of Spokane; five sons, Ronald Day, Jerry Day, William Day and Wayne Day, all of Spokane, and Vern Day of Kalama, Wash.; seven stepchildren of Spokane, Shelton and Cusick, Wash.; three sisters, Pearl Hammock of London, Ky., Nancy Means of Waco, Ky., and Beaula Taylor of Richmond, Ky.; one brother, Earl Day of Dayton, Ohio; 14 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Memorials may be sent to a Memorial Fund for Bradley Day at U.S. Bank in Moscow.

Judy Marlene Wilson

A celebration of the life of Judy Marlene Wilson, 56, a longtime Pullman and Albion, Wash., resident and retired teller and bookkeeper, will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Shermer's Restaurant in Pullman.

Wilson died of cancer Saturday at the Palouse Hills Nursing Center in Pullman.

She was born Oct. 9, 1940, to Andrew and Lela Fisher Fladeland in Bonners Ferry, Idaho. She lived at Bonners Ferry until World War II, when the family moved to Puyallup, Wash. They later returned to Bonners Ferry and she graduated from high school there in 1956.

She married Wiley Wilson in 1957 and the couple lived at Bonners Ferry until moving to Spokane, where he attended school. They then moved to Albion. The couple later divorced.

She worked as a teller for U.S. Bank at Pullman for several years, then worked as a bookkeeper for Washington State University's Campus Commons. She recently retired because of ill health.

She is survived by two sons, Richard Wilson of Quincy, Wash., and Ronald Wilson of Tampa, Fla.; a daughter, Rhonda Russell of Rogers, Ark.; a brother, Ralph Stone of Kennewick; five sisters, Evelyn Sater, Lela Grondahl, Lila Zimmerman and Kay Paggett, all of Spokane, and Mary Viture of Allan, Saskatchewan, Canada; and four grandchildren.

Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman is handling arrangements.

Tommy Eng

Tommy Eng, 84, former Pullman, Wash., resident and owner of the Oriental Restaurant, died Wednesday in San Francisco. Arrangements are pending.

Albert Edgar Powell

Albert Edgar Powell, 77, retired Washington State University professor emeritus and longtime Pullman, Wash., resident, died of cancer today at his home. Kimball Funeral Home of Pullman is in charge of the arrangements.

Theodore W. 'Ted' Chandler

Theodore W. "Ted" Chandler, 87, a longtime LaCrosse, Wash., wheat farmer, died of emphysema Wednesday at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston, Idaho.

He was born Aug. 8, 1910, to John and Ada Fowler Chandler at Walla Walla, Wash. He attended area schools and graduated from Walla Walla High School in 1926. He also attended Washington State College, now university, at Pullman.

His first job was delivering the Walla Walla Bulletin. He later had a motor route. At age 14 he went to work at an uncle's ranch in LaCrosse. In 1940 he began operating the family farm at LaCrosse, which had been homesteaded in 1884 by his father.

In 1940 he built a new home on the location of the original pioneer home. He managed the farm until his death.

He also had homes during the years at Pullman, Hawaii, Walla Walla and Sequim, Wash.

He married Helen Romine Sept. 17, 1935, at Walla Walla. She died in 1980.

He married Maxine Titus in 1982 at Bremerton. She died in 1987.

He then married Barbara Latham Adamson at Pullman on May 12, 1990. In 1994 they moved to Lewiston.

He had been active in Elks Lodges, the Jaycees and Republican Party politics for many years.

He is survived by his wife at the family home; a son, Don Earl Chandler of Kirkland, Wash.; a daughter, Betty Jo Neill of Pullman; a sister, Elizabeth McEwen of Salem, Ore.; five grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, John Chandler; a brother, Jack Chandler, and two sisters, Ruth Weisell and Dorothy Smethurst.

Visitation is until 7 p.m. today at Merchant Funeral Home in Clarkston, Wash.

There will be a graveside service at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the LaCrosse City Cemetery.

The family suggests memorials may be sent to The Union Gospel Mission, E. 1224 Trent, Spokane, Wash., 99202, or The Salvation Army, 1835 G St., Lewiston, Idaho 83501.
