FORREST GAIL (FROSTY) GASKIN
Forrest Gaskin passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2003 at his home in Mount Vernon after a long battle with heart disease.
He was born at Rimrock, Washington in a tent in the woods during a summer windstorm, (thus his name) on July 11, 1923 to Roy and Kathryn (Kelly) Gaskin. He was raised in Yakima along with his three brothers and four sisters.
He married Nadine O. Osburn while in the Navy in Corpus Christi, Texas on February 19, 1945 and they were married for 56 years before she preceded him in death in December 2001.
Forrest was a brilliant man, with great integrity, and was a source of knowledge for many people.
He himself, never stopped learning; the dictionary, encyclopedia, and various "How To Manuals" were always part of his daily reading materials, along with the newspaper (which he read from cover to cover) daily.
His children and grandchildren always knew who to call with any question on just about any subject.
Forrest worked at many jobs throughout his life.
He worked as a supervisor at Boeing for 22 years, in Seattle, New Orleans, and New Mexico.
In 1971, he was to be transferred yet again, and he decided to quit the company so that he could bring his family "home" to the Yakima Valley.
He and his wife Nadine purchased an 80-acre farm in Sunnyside, Washington that was in total disrepair and together with much work made it into a productive farm.
Forrest spent some of his happiest years working from dawn till past dusk swathing, bailing, and taking care of the livestock while at the same time repairing antiquated equipment and renovating all of the buildings on the property.
In the fall of 1976, Forrest had to sell the farm and "retire" when he had his first heart attack. He and Nadine then moved to the Skagit Valley, a place that they had both fallen in love with on a family vacation to Canada.
Again, Forrest and Nadine renovated a house, and made it into a lovely family home for his children and grandchildren to gather many times a year, usually for a great BBQ.
Over the years in the valley, Forrest co-founded NorthSound Marine Products, worked in real estate, and designed and built boxing lines for various berry farms in the area. When Nadine became ill, he again "retired" from work outside the home and became her sole caregiver until he suffered a cardiac arrest on 9/11/01. Forrest battled back from a three-day coma, and continued to fight the good fight with the love and support of his children and his wonderful caregiver, Karen Murphy, until his death last week.
Forrest is survived and greatly missed by his three children, Michael and his wife Benita, of Los Sauces, Mexico, his daughter Jenny and husband Bob of Mount Vernon, and his son Kurtis and wife Kelly, at the family home.
He is also survived by eleven grandchildren, one brother and two sisters all in Arizona, and by many, many friends, some who have remained close since his Boeing days.
American Burial and Cremation in Marysville, WA will conduct cremation. At his request there will be no services.
