GERALDINE GRUVER, 86, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident passed away peacefully at her home on Monday September 30, 2002.
Geraldine was born on March 24, 1916 in Coos Bay, Oregon, the daughter of Lewis & Millie Attebery Gruver. As a young girl the family moved to Wenatchee, WA where she was raised and attended school. She graduated from Wenatchee High School in 1936. In the late 1930’s the family moved to Sedro-Woolley and Geraldine worked at the Mount Baker Hardware Store for several years which her parents operated. Geraldine’s sister Marian says, “She was a great cook, and took good care of me when I was young”. “She was a most sweet and gentle lady”, say her caregivers. Geri always had a smile for everyone and enjoyed visiting with people. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She is survived by her sister Marian Gruver of Sedro-Woolley. An aunt, Phyllis Attebery of Spokane. Several cousins, her loving caregivers, Carol, Kelly, Melanie and Candice and many friends.
Memorials to Skagit Hospice are suggested.
Private burial was at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Harley John Zimmerman
Born in Washington State on Dec. 14, 1929
Departed on Oct. 2, 2002 and resided in Newport Beach, CA.

HARLEY JOHN ZIMMERMAN, beloved father and friend, passed away on October 2, 2002, in Newport Beach, CA. He was born December 14, 1929 in Washington where he was raised and attended school. Harley served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He met his wife in Hawaii where they lived for several years and moved to California in the 1960’s.
Harley had a promising career in the aerospace and commercial aircraft industry and retired in 1996. He loved nature, animals and most of all just spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife Gerry; his children, Gail, JoAnn, John and Stacy; and grandchildren, Dylan, Camren, Ryan, Brandon and Ethan.
Those he touched were blessed to be a part of his life as he embraced all of those around him. He will be dearly missed. We are grateful to have many beautiful and loving memories of a man who gave everything he had.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. at Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery. Pastor Walt Rice of Bethlehem Lutheran Church is officiating. Military Honors will be provided by George Baldridge Post 43 American Legion. Services and arrangements under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Alan Michael Brown
Born in Slough, England on May. 25, 1937

ALAN MICHAEL BROWN, 65, a resident of Concrete, WA passed away at his home on Friday December 6, 2002.
He was born on May 25, 1937 in Slough, England, the son of William A. & Beatrice Shoreland Brown. He was raised in England until 1953 when the family moved to Quebec, Ontario, Canada, then to Vancouver, B.C. Canada in 1955. He later came to the United States and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958. He served in the U.S. Armed Services for 25 years as a maintenance officer during his enlistment and had 3 tours in the Viet Nam Conflict. Following his discharge he made his home in Tacoma and Issaquah and worked as a maintenance supervisor in the health care field. In 1998 he moved to Concrete to enjoy retirement. Alan was an excellent mechanic and a jack of all trades person who could fix anything. He enjoyed sailing, fishing, snowmobiling and building and flying remote control model airplanes.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Michael & Jeanette Brown and daughter Annette Horton, all of Tacoma, WA. 2 grandchildren, Nicole & Michael Brown. His mother, Beatrice Brown of Port Alberni, B.C. , Canada and his brother, Peter Brown of B.C. Canada. He was preceded in death by his father William Brown, a daughter Susan Brown and a brother Derrick Brown.
Graveside services will be held Monday December 16, 2002 at 2:00 PM at the Forest Park Cemetery in Concrete. Military honors provided by the Fort Lewis Honor Guard. Services under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Evelyn Irene Raines
Born in Maynard, Minnesota on Mar. 20, 1921
Departed on Dec. 10, 2002 and resided in Burlington, WA.

EVELYN IRENE RAINES, our loving mother, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday December 10, 2002 while residing at the Life Care Center of Mount Vernon. She was 81 years of age.
She was born on March 20, 1921 in Maynard, MN, the daughter of John & Ida Rubel Marholz, Jr. She was raised and attended school in Maynard and there was united in marriage to Arthur Williams on December 31, 1939. They lived and farmed in Sacred Heart, MN until moving to Sedro-Woolley, WA in 1948. From 1949 to 1962 Evelyn worked as a LPN at Northern State Hospital in Sedro-Woolley. In 1962 Evelyn and Arthur moved to Willmar, MN, where Arthur preceded her in death in 1976, and she worked at the Willmar State Hospital until her retirement in 1982. Following her retirement she returned to Sedro-Woolley, where in 1985 she married Cecil Raines and where they made their home. Evelyn was very caring to family and friends and to all who knew her. She never missed sending wishes on birthdays and anniversaries. She has been a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 54 years; enjoyed attending gatherings with the T.O.P.S. Club and was especially fond of music and dancing.
She is survived by her husband Cecil living in Fernwood, Idaho. Her 7 children and their spouses, Pattie Williams of Burlington, WA, Michael & Patricia Williams of Jacobson, MN, Paula Sager of Burlington, WA, Wayne & Pat Williams of Vancouver, WA, Phyllis & Steve Kilmer of Edina, MN, Steven & Coreen Williams of Willmar, MN and Bill & Naomi Williams of Richmond, MN. 1 brother, Maurice “Ike” Marholz of Casper, WY. 15 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, step-children, step-grandchildren and in-laws. Besides her husband Arthur she was also preceded in death by her parents, 2 brothers, Cliff & Everett Marholz and a granddaughter, Nicole Williams. The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Creekside Assisted Living in Burlington and the Life Care Center of Mount Vernon for their loving and attentive care during Evelyn’s stay. The family also suggests memorials be made to the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1006 Wicker Road, Sedro-Woolley, WA 98284 or the Skagit Valley Kidney Center, PO Box 1136, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
A Life Celebration will be held Sunday December 15, 2002 at 1:00 PM at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Sedro-Woolley. Pastor Walt Rice officiating. Inurnment will be in Minnesota. Cremation arrangements under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Arthur Benjamin Rockwell
Born in Duluth, Minnesota on Jul. 21, 1912

Arthur Benjamin Rockwell a 52 year resident of Marblemount passed away Friday December 6, 2002 at his home at the age of 90 years. He was born July 21, 1912 in Duluth, Minnesota the son of Franklin and Helma Johnson Rockwell. Arthur grew up in Minnesota and moved with his parents to Seattle in 1929. During WWII he served with the Merchant Marines surviving 2 torpedo sinkings. After the war, he moved to Marblemount and worked as a heavy construction worker on the Ross and Diablo Dams. Arthur was a lifetime member of Local 302 Operating Engineers, a member of Eagles Aerie #1 in Seattle for over 50 years, Hekett Arnold #132 American Legion in Concrete, and the Puget Sound Chapter of the Merchant Marine Veterans of WWII. Arthur is survived by a sister in law Almina Rockwell of Seattle. Nephews Don Rockwell of San Diego, CA, Leonard Romano of Seattle, Dennis Mork of Federal Way and nieces Kelly Horn of Salt Lake City, UT, Vanessa Rockwell of Canada, and Merle Bellis of Ellensburg, WA. Great niece and nephew Megan and Michael Hafermann of Salt Lake City, UT. Special friends Hal and Shirley Williamson & family of Tenino, WA, Maureen Cordova & family of Albuquerque, NM, and Reg Hunter of Marblemount.
Funeral Services will be Friday, December 13, 2002 at 11:00AM at Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley with interment to follow at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery.

Timothy Lawrence Edwards, Sr.
Born in Mount Vernon, Washington on Dec. 14, 1949

Timothy Lawrence “Stub-O-Quid #1” Edwards, Sr., a lifetime resident of Swinomish passed away Friday, December 6, 2002 at the Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, WA at the age of 52 years. He was born December 14, 1949 in Mount Vernon, WA, the son of Lawrence and Agatha Cassimere Edwards, Sr. Tim was worked as a fisherman, sawmill worker, and for 10 years was a foreman at the Swinomish Cannery. He was a minister in the Shaker Church, a member of the Swinomish Tribe and Swinomish Smoke House, and a Prayer Warrior for the Swinomish Tribe. He enjoyed cooking and watching cooking shows on television. Tim was married to Kim Clark in the Shaker Church at Swinomish on April 11, 1981. He is survived by his wife Kim of the family home in Swinomish. 9 children, Timothy Edwards, Jr., Angelia Edwards, and Wynette Goliver and her husband Mike all of Mount Vernon. Lawrence Edwards and his wife Lisa, Marlon Edwards, Charles Edwards, Edith Edwards, Alma Edwards, and Kendall Topaum all of Swinomish. 7 grandchildren. His mother, Agatha Edwards of Swinomish. A brother Joseph P. McCoy, Sr. of Swinomish and 3 sisters LaVonne Trask of Spokane, and Alice Topaum and Audrey Edwards both of Swinomish. Also numerous nieces and nephews.
A Shaker Prayer Service will be Monday, December 9, 2002 at 3:00PM at the Swinomish Shaker Church with a All Denominational Prayer Service to follow at 7:00PM at the Social Services Building. A Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at 10:00AM at the Social Services Building with Harlan Sam, Sr. officiating. Burial will follow at the Swinomish Cemetery. Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

William Edgar Hyatt

William E. “Ed” Hyatt a longtime resident of Sedro-Woolley passed away Saturday, November 30, 2002 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley, WA at the age of 89 years. He was born July 16, 1913 in Franklin, North Carolina the son of J.P. and Lula Mae Hyatt. Ed was a resident of Sedro-Woolley since 1947 coming here from North Carolina. He worked in construction for many years working on the lower and upper Baker Dams, and the Navy Base at Whidbey Island. Ed was known for his quiet and hardworking manner and his obligation to put in a full days of work. Ed was a member of the Laborers Union and Valley Baptist Church. He enjoyed gardening and having coffee everyday at 2pm at the Iron Skillet for many years. He was married to Madge Brown in 1967 in Couer D’ Alene, ID. Ed is survived by his wife Madge of Sedro-Woolley. Children Kenneth Hyatt of Mount Vernon, Dewey Hyatt of Sedro-Woolley, Frances Oxenham of Sedro-Woolley, Lucille Beimer of Mount Vernon, and Fay Stewart of Renton, WA. Stepchildren Eloda Mace of Houston, TX, Rayette Bassett of Richmond, TX, and Charles Deaver of Marquett, MI. Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, nieces, and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters Gracie, Dorothy, and Pearl, and a son Ray Hyatt.
Funeral Services will be Friday, December 6, 2002 at 2:00 PM at Lemley Chapel with Pastor Dan Panter officiating. Interment to follow at the Bow Cemetery. A reception will follow the services at Valley Baptist Church in Sedro-Woolley. Memorials are suggested to Valley Baptist Church.

Luola Maria Berg
Born in Bellingham, WA on Dec. 17, 1908

LUOLA M. BERG, 93, a former Sedro-Woolley area resident passed away on Thursday November 28, 2002 at the Crescent Home Care Center in Bothell.
She was born on December 17, 1908 in Bellingham, WA, the daughter of James & Olive Davidson Days. She was raised and attended school at South Pass near Sumas & Everson. She graduated from Sumas High School in 1925 and then attended Bellingham Normal School where she earned a teaching degree. She taught school for a time until she married Clarence White in 1931, and they made their home in Sumas. He preceded her in death in 1952. In 1957 she married Roy Berg in Everson, WA and they made their home in Sedro-Woolley. Luola worked as a teller for U.S. Bank in Sedro-Woolley for 15 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of the Rebecca Lodge and was a volunteer at United General Hospital, providing over 6000 hours of service to the hospital gift shop. She was also a member of the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints in Sedro-Woolley.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Richard & Judy White of Woodinville. Her daughter, Carla Stiles of Bothell. 4 grandchildren, Carol Binder, Diana VanWeerdhuizen and Carl and Carman White, 8 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clarence in 1952 and Roy in 1972. A son James White in 1966, a grandson David White, and 3 brothers, Ben, Frank and Joe Days.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday December 4, 2002 at 12:30 P.M. at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life at 2:00 PM at Lemley Chapel in Sedro-Woolley. Bishop Mel Call from the Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-day Saints, Sedro-Woolley Ward, officiating. Visitation will be on Monday & Tuesday from 9 AM to 5 PM and on Wednesday from 9 AM to 11:30 AM. The family suggests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
