James E. “JUMBO” London a lifetime resident of Skagit Valley passed away Monday, May 12, 2003 at the Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon, WA at the age of 68 years. He was born on November 21, 1934 to Robert and Olive Ball London in Burlington, WA. He attended school in Burlington and he later married Shirley Bryson on July 14, 1956 in Sedro-Woolley and they had three children Julie, Jack, and Lori. Jim began his working years first working at WRP Lumber Co. From there he moved his family to Goldendale, WA where he worked in construction on the John Day Dam and he later moved to Prescott, WA where he worked on the Lower Monumental Dam. When his kids reached school age he moved them back to Sedro-Woolley where he has since resided. He finished out his working years driving log trucks. He racked up to 1.5 million miles without an accident, driving for Janicki Logging and Construction. He loved his job and had to retire due to illness. Jim enjoyed car racing and drove stock car for ten years at Skagit Speedway. Giving up driving, he went to pitting for this long time friend Lloyd Armey. They traveled to Iowa, California, and tracks here in the Northwest. His other joy was frequent trips to Reno, but most of all he enjoyed watching his grandchildren grow up. Jim is survived by his wife Shirley of the family home in Sedro-Woolley and three children Julie and her husband Scott Auckland of Sedro-Woolley, Jack and his wife Denise London of Mount Vernon, and Lori and her husband Denny Knutson of Bow. 10 grandchildren Wayne, Rachel, and Weston Hilsinger, Wade Auckland, Bob, Jonathan and Kendra London, Kristy, Michelle, and Kyle Knutson. A sister Floy Fortin of Burlington, a brother Butch London of Darrington, and a sister in law Linda London of Puyallup. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Edwin O. London and two half brothers and one half sister.
At Jim’s request there will be no services. A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, May 19, 2003 from 11AM to 2PM at the Sedro-Woolley Community Center. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Assn. Arrangements and cremation under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Ronald Edward Ensley
Born in Sedro-Woolley, WA on Feb. 26, 1955

Ronald E. Ensley, age 48, passed away at his home in Hamilton, Saturday, November 29, 2003. Ron was born February 26, 1955, in Sedro-Woolley to Amos and Ethel (Ashe) Ensley. He grew up in the Skagit Valley and remained here all of his life. Ron worked on the family dairy as a young man, later working in logging and shake mills until he became medically unable to work. He was loyal, supportive and respectful to all and loved to help people. He was a good son, brother and friend.
Ron was preceded in death by his mother Ethel Louise Ensley and is survived by his children; 2 daughters, Corrne R. and her husband Vidal Barker of Everett, Sarah King of Nixa, Missouri; one son, Ronald A. Ensley of Hamilton; 5 grandchildren; father, Amos Ensley of Hamilton; sister, Robin and her husband Major Wood of Monterey, CA; brother, Randy Ensley and his wife Deanna of Birdsview.
Graveside services will be at Hamilton Cemetery, Thursday, December 4th, at 2:00 p.m., with Pastor Michael Osborne officiating. You are invited to share you memories of Ron by signing our online guest book at www.lemleychapel.com

Jack Leon Chamberlin
Born in Colville, WA on Jun. 26, 1921

Jack L. Chamberlin passed away Sunday, November 30, 2003 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley, WA at the age of 82 years. He was born June 26, 1921 in Colville, WA the son of Leon and Bessie Root Chamberlin. Jack has been a resident of Sedro-Woolley for the past 16 years formally living in Edmonds, WA and Anaconda, MT. He was a US Army Veteran serving during WWII and was a graduate of the University of Montana with a degree in Forestry. Jack was married to Marguerite Nowlan on April 5, 1982 in Edmonds, WA. For many years Jack worked as a carpenter in the home construction business. He was a member of the Eagles FOE #2069 and George Baldridge Post #43 American Legion and he enjoyed fishing. Jack is survived by his wife Marguerite Chamberlin of Sedro-Woolley. 7 children Doris Greenough of Hood River, OR, Donna Vancous of Butte, MT, Dayle Rutledge of Santa Maria, CA, Jamie Scalise of Spokane, WA, Jim Dewing of Edmonds, WA, John Dewing of Bent Mountain, Virginia, and Pamela Somerville of Glasgow, Scotland. 15 grandchilddren, 15 great grandchildren, a niece Rita Campbell and a great niece Lisa Campbell both of Vancouver, WA.
Memorial Services will be Thursday, December 4, 2003 at 2:00PM at Eagles FOE #2069 at the corner of Metcalf and Warner in Sedro-Woolley.
Arrangements and cremation under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Roy Donald Stout, Sr.
Born in Richmond, Indiana on Jun. 28, 1929
Departed on Nov. 22, 2003 and resided in Sedro-Woolley, WA.

Dale R. “Red” Lucas born December 22, 1938 went to be with his Lord on November 22, 2003 at the age of 64 years. After a very courageous battle with cancer, he went peacefully at home with his wife and daughter at his side.
Dale lived an extremely eventful and complete life. He was a brilliant and talented man. He was considered by all a terrific friend, a great husband, and extraordinary father. All who knew him knew what he was capable of. He was extremely intelligent, and all who knew him respected and envied his brilliance and talent. He was seen, respected, and will be remembered as a man that could do anything.
He was born to Glenn and Helen Bradley Lucas of Iola, Kansas where he was raised on a farm. He later served with the US Army and returned after his service time to start making a living as a construction worker. He became an expert heavy equipment operator in both Local #101 of Kansas City as well as Local #$302 of Seattle which allowed him to provide for his family. He met his wife Barbara on September 26, 1988 and their union and marriage was a testament to their vows and also a testament to others what a marriage should be. Dale enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, and he was a member of the Moose Lodge, Steelhead Club, and attended Central United Methodist Church. He is survived by his mother Helen Lucas of Mesa, AZ, his loving wife Barbara Dinneen-Lucas of Sedro-Woolley, his daughter Angela Mauricio of Sedro-Woolley, and his step-son Bryce and his wife Brenda Gallant of Gilbert, AZ. His grandchildren Joshua Russell of Pleasant Hill, MO, Chelsea and Kaitlynne Mauricio of Sedro-Woolley, Sarah & Sorina King and Garrett Gallant all of Gilbert, AZ and a great grandchild Gavin Russell of Pleasant Hill, MO. Brothers Larry and his wife Carol Lucas and their children, Wallace and his wife Elaine Lucas and their children, Keith and his wife Diane Lucas and a sister Sherri Lucas Schmidt and her husband Bill and their children. In addition, he is survived by his step-children from a previous marriage; Roger Downing and his wife and children, Donna Landes, Elizabeth Downing Oden and her husband and children, Joseph Downing, Christopher Downing and wife, and Stephen Downing and his wife and children all of Missouri. He was preceded in death by his father Glenn Lucas.
Dale had countless friends that he acquired since moving to Washington in 1990 as well as many friends in Missouri. He will be missed and remembered often by all.
A Celebration of Dale’s Life will be held Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 1:00PM at the Central United Methodist Church with Pastor Mark Johnson officiating with a reception to follow the services at the church. Memorials are suggested to Skagit Hospice or Central United Methodist Church. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Drs. Dietrich & Smith Clinic and North Puget Oncology for all those who helped in Dale’s care. Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Walter Allen Kester
Born in Agusta, WI on Jun. 5, 1923
Departed on Nov. 25, 2003 and resided in Sedro-Woolley, WA.

WALTER A. KESTER, 80, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away on Tuesday November 25, 2003 at the Life Care Center of Skagit Valley in Sedro-Woolley.
Walt was born on June 5, 1923 in Augusta, Wisconsin, one of nine children of Joseph Edna (Lowe) Kester. He came to Washington with his family in 1937.
On July 24, 1956 he was united in marriage to Doris Brookings in Sedro-Woolley, where they have made their home for the past 47 years.
For several years Walt worked for McDougal Wagner, bottling and delivering milk around Skagit County. Written on the front of his delivery truck was “Here comes Walt” and on the back, “There goes Walt”. In 1961 he started working at Northern State Hospital, training as a Licensed Practical Nurse. He worked there until its closure in 1973. He then worked in the Sedro-Woolley area doing construction and general repairs for several years.
Walt was a dedicated Christian, and has been a 47 year member of the Sedro-Woolley Free Methodist Church (Northern Peaks Christian Fellowship). He donated countless hours of volunteer time in constructing the new church and educational facility. Walt will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
He is survived by his wife, Doris, at the family home in Sedro-Woolley. 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Allen & Alana Kester of Ferndale, and Phillip & Allie Kester of Concrete. 1 daughter, Karen Anderson of Mount Vernon. 1 step-son and his wife, Ken & Kathy Everson of Mount Vernon, and 1 step-daughter and her husband, Sandra & Jerry Walker of Bremerton. 13 grandchildren, David, Jason, Timothy and Daniel Kester, Nancy Lenier, Beth Smith, Shannon Anderson, Jean and Annette Walker, Klara Everson, Kenny Everson his wife Jamie, Kevin Anderson and Haylie Taylor. 8 great-grandchildren. 2 brothers and their wives, Ken & Faye Kester and Bob & Flossey Kester. 2 sisters, Mildred Peterson, and Joyce Owens and her husband Rod. 1 sister-in-law, Donna Kester. Also numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and four brothers, Emerson, Fred, Dwayne and Vernon Kester.
A graveside committal service will be at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery on Monday, December 1, 2003 at 2: 00 P.M., followed by a memorial service at the Northern Peaks Christian Fellowship Church in Sedro-Woolley at 3:00 P.M. Pastors Kirby & Shirley Bertholf officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Northern Peaks Christian Fellowship Church.

Sharon Gay Pilgrim
Born in Astoria, Oregon on Sep. 25, 1937
Departed on Nov. 20, 2003 and resided in Sedro-Woolley, WA.

SHARON GAY (RIDDLE) PILGRIM, 66, a longtime Sedro-Woolley resident, passed away at her home on Thursday November 20, 2003.
Sharon was born on September 25, 1937 in Astoria, Oregon the daughter of Fred & Geraldine Wycoff Metcalf. She was raised and attended school in Centralia, WA before coming to Skagit County in 1949 and graduating from Sedro-Woolley High School with the Class of 1955. After graduation, she enlisted in the US Marine Corps. For many years, Sharon worked as a florist at the Sedro-Woolley Greenhouse and for the past 10 years she worked at Fibrex in Burlington.
Sharon’s leisure time was spent gardening around her home, painting, hiking, and reading. She also enjoyed time with her animals and her family.
She is survived by her 2 sons and daughters-in-law, Mike & Arlene Riddle and Gary & Carie Riddle all of Sedro-Woolley. Her daughter, Dawn Riddle of Stanwood. 7 grandchildren, Michelle, Scott, Kjel, Anthony, Colleen, Christine & Jamie. 2 great-grandchildren, Shy-Ann & Dakota. 1 sister, Linda Lepak of Washington, DC; 1 brother, Terry Taylor and his wife Carla and a special friend, Ed Dreyer, all of Sedro-Woolley.
Memorials are suggested to the Skagit Valley Humane Society or North Puget Oncology.
A Graveside Inurnment Service will be held on Saturday, November 29, 2003 at 10:30 AM at the Sedro-Woolley Union Cemetery with Pastor Ed Horak of the Northwest Christian Center officiating. A reception will follow the services at the family home for friends and family. Cremation and services under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Steve Carter Hislop
Born in Longview, WA on Apr. 17, 1947
Departed on Nov. 13, 2003 and resided in Concrete, WA.
Celebration of Life: Saturday Nov. 22, 2003
Steve C. Hislop, 56, of Concrete, passed away at his home Thursday, Nov. 13, 2003. He had been a Skagit County resident for 37 years. Steve was born April 17, 1947 in Longview, WA to George E. and Minnie A. “Hereford” Hislop. He attended Western Washington University and Port Angeles Community College where he graduated in the Forestry Technician Program in 1976 and worked in the Forest Service Industry for over 35 years, the last 14 years with the Department of Natural Resources. He was known as the “Tree Nanny”. He loved the outdoors, backpacking, hiking and traveling the world.
Survivors include; daughter, Megan Hislop
Son, Brady Hislop both of New Haven, CT
Sister, Pat Williams
Brother, Ed Hislop both of Longview, WA
Step-father, Maurice Watson of Castle Rock, WA
Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Wilah May Young

WILAH MAY “WILLIE” YOUNG, 71, a resident of Sedro-Woolley, went home to be with her Lord on Monday November 17, 2003 from Skagit Valley Hospital in Mount Vernon.
Willie was born on May 28, 1932 in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Fred & Oma (Basinger) Oller. She came to Skagit County as a young girl, living on Whidbey Island and in Sedro-Woolley, making this area her home for over 60 years. For many years she worked in housekeeping, cleaning private homes and commercial offices. She also was an in-home care provider for many years.
Willie was a loving and giving person, who lived her life by the “pay it forward” philosophy. NO was never an answer when she was asked to help.
She adored her family, especially the grandchildren, their get together barbeques and spending time at the ocean and at Whidbey Island.
She is survived by her four children; sons Tom Bowman of Sedro-Woolley, WA and David Cope and his wife Angie of Arlington, WA. Daughters, Dianne Gardner and her husband Tom of Sedro-Woolley and Yolonda Byrne and her husband Russell of Colorado Springs, CO. 5 grandchildren, Carl, Kimberly (Kimmy), Amanda, Shaylene and Trent, and her great-granddaughter Heidi. 2 sisters, Marie Sitko of Burlington, WA and Alice Peck of Mount Vernon, WA. 1 brother, Glen Prothero of Ellensburg, WA and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard in 2001 and a brother, Jimmy Prothero.
The family suggests everyone do a pay it forward deed in memory of Willie.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday November 21, 2003 at 2:00 PM at the Bethel Assembly of God Church in Sedro-Woolley. Pastor Billy Farrar officiating. Private entombment will be at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery in Seattle. Services under direction of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.

Lisa May Shafer
Born in Ballard, WA on Dec. 22, 1959
Departed on Jan. 23, 2004 and resided in Concrete, WA.

Lisa May Shafer passed away suddenly Friday, January 23, 2004 at her home in Concrete, WA at the age of 44 years. She was born December 22, 1959 in Ballard, WA. Lisa was a resident of Skagit Valley for the past 14 years of which the last 3 years were in Concrete. She grew up in Lynnwood, WA and graduated from Meadowdale High School in 1979. She was married to Don Shafer on July 17, 1982 in Naches, WA and they resided in Snohomish County until moving to Skagit Valley. She and her husband were involved with children’s ministry throughout the Northwest and she was the Children’s Pastor at New Beginnings Church in Everett, WA. Lisa loved animals and crafts and was involved with her daughters 4-H activities. She is survived by her husband Don Shafer of the family home in Concrete. Her children Garret Shafer of Sedro-Woolley and Devin and Andrea Shafer of the family home. Her mother Delores Ostrander-Ragle and step-father Eugene Ragle of Sedro-Woolley and a sister Tracy and her husband Tim Buchanan of Alabama.
Memorial Services will be Saturday, January 31, 2004 AT 2:00PM at the New Beginnings Church 2531 Oakes Ave in Everett, WA with Pastors Frank Pina and Dennis Mumms officiating. A local Memorial Service will be held Sunday, February 1, 2004 at 6:00PM at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Sedro-Woolley.
Memorials are suggested to The N.O.A.H. Center PO Box 1603 Stanwood, WA 98292. Arrangements and Services under the care of Lemley Chapel, Sedro-Woolley.
