Capt. Jose C. Calugas Sr.
Retired
Jose C. Calugas Sr., born December 29, 1907 to Antonio Calugas and Juliana Cabalfin in Bgy. Tagsing, Leon, Iloilo, Philippines, passed away January 18, 1998 in Tacoma, WA. Jose distinguished himself as an army sergeant in the Philippine Islands during World War II, receiving the Medal of Honor. While assigned as a sergeant in Battery B, 88th Field Artillery, Philippine Scouts, near Culis, Bataan Province, Philippine Islands, on January 16, 1942, a battery gun position was bombed and shelled by the enemy until one gun was put out of commission and all the cannoneers were killed or wounded. Sgt. Calugas, a mess sergeant from another battery, voluntarily and without orders ran 1,000 yards across a shell-swept area to the gun position. There he organized a volunteer squad, placing the gun back into commission and fired effectively against the enemy, although the position remained under constant and heavy Japanese artillery fire. After World War II, Calugas finished a 27 year military career, retiring in the rank of Captain in 1957 from Ft. Lewis, WA. Retiring in Tacoma, WA, he graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 1961, earning his BA in Business Administration. He was recognized by the City of Tacoma with their Honorary Citizen Award, was given "The Key to the City of Tacoma", and received The Medal of Honor permanent license plate presented to him by the Late Governor of Washington, Dixey Lee Ray. He is also named on the Medal of Honor Monument in our state capital, and on the Medal of Honor Tree in Valley Forge, PA. He had the honor of having two organizations named after him: Captain Jose Calugas Sr., USAFFE, Chapter No. 1, Long Beach, CA; and Philippine Scouts Heritage Society, Captain Jose Calugas Sr. Chapter, Tacoma, WA. He was preceded in death by his wife, Nora Cababa-an. Woodrow I. "Woody" Wheeler
Woody Wheeler, founder of Wheeler Realty of Tacoma, died on Saturday, January 17, 1998, at the age of 85. Born in Lorraine, ND, Woody's passion as a young man was playing piano in a band in the Midwest. In 1941 he and his family moved to Tacoma, where he worked in the shipyards. In 1946 he found his calling - selling real estate, and in 1948 with his wife, Vi, by his side, he opened Wheeler Realty in North End Tacoma, with a dream of serving customers and clients and providing the highest standards and ethics in real estate. Woody's dream is still alive today at Wheeler Realty. One of Woody's great accomplishments was that both sons, Mike and Bruce, entered the real estate profession. Woody's devotion to his community led him to be appointed to the State Real Estate Commission in 1965 by Democratic Governor Rosellini, and reappointed in 1970 by Republican Governor Evans. It was the first time opposing political parties agreed upon the same commissioner. He served on numerous community and business groups: Director, Western District, National Assoc. of License Law Officials; Chairman, State Real Estate Exam Committee; Treasurer, Tacoma-Pierce County Assoc. of Realtors (Life Membership awarded in 1989); a founder and trustee of WA Real Estate Education Foundation; President and Treasurer, 26th & Proctor Merchants' Assoc.; Member, BPOE #174 and West Tacoma Kiwanis Club. Wheeler, Gig Harbor, Deric L. Wheeler, Iowa City IA, Monica L. Wheeler, Tacoma and Jon R. Wheeler, Tacoma; and 7 great grandchildren. Woody will be remembered for his honesty, integrity and sense of fair play in a very competitive profession; his devotion to and love for his family; and his love of music, especially the piano. Funeral service at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, North 14th & Stevens St., Tacoma, on Saturday, Jan. 24 at 2:00 p.m. Reception following at the church. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Building Fund.
