Evelyn M. Corbin
Evelyn M. Corbin, 88, a lifelong Sumner resident and wife of Walter Corbin - former head Auditor of Puget Sound Bank, and mother of long time Bonney Lake activist Louisa Smith, died Thursday, April 9, 1998 at Valley Terrace Nursing Home in Puyallup. She was born February 2, 1910 in Hudson, WI, to Rolland and Jessie (Bateman) Strong. She attended schools in Puyallup and graduated from Puyallup High School in 1927. Evelyn worked for many years as a hair dresser at Rhodes Department Store, the Bon Marche, and out of her home until retirement. On July 2, 1940 she married Walter Corbin. They enjoyed horseback riding and camping together until his passing in 1979. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was a member of the First Methodist Church of Sumner. Survivors include 1 daughter, Louisa Smith (Ron) of Bonney Lake; 2 grandchildren, Matthew Uffelman and wife Kim of Bonney Lake, Helen Williams and husband Ed of Bonney Lake; and 5 great grandchildren. A private family graveside will be held Saturday, April 11, 1998 at Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup. Visitation will be Friday, April 10, 1998, 12n to 5pm at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup. Donations can be made to the Evelyn M. Corbin Memorial Fund, PO Box 1315, Puyallup, WA 98371. They will be dispersed to Bonney Lake Chamber of Commerce and Puyallup Kiwanis Club. The family would like to express their thanks to Valley Terrace for the care and attention for their mother and grandmother for ten years.

Harvey H. Bond Jr.
Harvey Bond Jr., born May 15, 1929 in Detroit, MI, passed away April 9, 1998 in Tacoma. He enlisted in the US Army, where he served for over 21 years before retiring in 1970. Harvey later worked for Burns Security, as well as several others in the Tacoma area. He enjoyed making model airplanes, fishing, and was a member of the Tacoma Eagles and Spanaway VFW. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Dorothy; children Robert G. (Dorothy) DeWitt, Jacqueline Knecht, Suzanne (Terry) Jones, and Rodney DeWitt; one sister, Patricia Ream, Texas; along with 40 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Graveside services are 11:30 am Monday, April 13, 1998 in Tahoma National Cemetery. Visitation begins Sunday, 12 noon until 9 pm. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

John W. Gordhamer
John W. Gordhamer was born on February 22, 1915 in Willmar, MN, and passed away on April 7, 1998 in Lacey, WA. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1940 to 1946 before joining the Foreign Service of the Department of State, where he served for 27 years as an Administrative Officer in various Embassies overseas. He retired in the Washington, DC, area in 1973, and 1 year later moved to Tacoma. John is survived by his wife of 49 years, Elise "Lee" Gordhamer; son Mark Gordhamer of Kent; daughter Nancy Loe of Puyallup; and five grandchildren: Tanya, Mark Jr., Adam, Zachary and Matthew. He was a wonderful husband and father and will be missed by his family and friends. He enjoyed traveling in his Airstream, and his many friends he encountered along the way. He was a member of the Elks Lodge #174. Memorial services will be announced at a later date. Graveside interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, 1124 Columbia Street, Seattle, WA 98104-2029; or the American Heart Association. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Kathryn M. Klopf
Kathryn Klopf, 77, of Yelm, died Wed. April 8, 1998. She was born May 2, 1920 in St. Paul, MN. Kathryn was a member of the American Legion and VFW Auxiliary's. She is survived by husband George, of Yelm; son John and wife Lana Kay Klopf, Lewisberg, PA.; daughters, Georgeanne and husband Grant Pavolka, Mill Creek, WA., Kathleen and husband Mark Dawkins, Eatonville; sister, Marian Kordell, Tacoma; brother Robert Kordell, Tacoma; and 6 grandchildren. The family would like to thank the nurses and nurses aides at Mother Joseph Care Center for their care of Kathryn. Friends who wish may give to the St. Jude Hospital in Kathryn's name. Rosary will be Wed., April 15, 9:30 a.m. at St. Columban Church in Yelm followed by funeral mass at 10 a.m. Interment will be in Fir Lane Memorial Park. Fir Lane Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Mary F. Mansfield, 71, died April 8, 1998. She had been a nurse for many years in both hospital and schools. Private family service will be held. Arrangements by Dryer Mortuary.

Robert L. Taft Sr.
Robert L. Taft Sr. passed away Thursday, April 9, 1998 at Mason General Hospital in Shelton, WA. Mr. Taft was born in Tacoma in 1940. He graduated from Stadium High School in 1958, and attended U.P.S. for 2 1/2 years. Mr. Taft was in the Marines, and he was the Sales Manager for several local beverage companies. He enjoyed classic cars, boating, gardening and collecting items from the 50's and 60's. He is survived by his wife, Karen; son, Robert; daughter, Kimberly; grandson, Steven; sister, Mary. There will be a family gathering at the family home on Sunday, April 19 at 1 p.m. Arrangements by Forest Funeral Home, Shelton.

Serafin Salazar Crisostomo (Serry)
Serafin Salazar Crisostomo was born January 21, 1924 at Fort Mills, Corregidor, Cavite, Philippines. He passed away on April 8, 1998. He served in the United States Army during World War II (prisoner of war), Korean War, and the Vietnam War. Included among his many awards and decorations was the Bronze Star for bravery in combat. He retired as Chief Warrant Officer after 26 years. He then served 16 years with the American Red Cross as Assistant Field Director. As a founding member of the Lakewood Filipino-American community he was a respected leader involved in numerous Filipino organizations. He is survived by his loving, devoted wife, Crispina T. Crisostomo; three sisters, two brothers; his three children, Zenaida C. Slemp, Al Crisostomo, Daniel Crisostomo; his son-in-law retired Major Campbell G. Slemp (USAF), and granddaughter Chelsee-Marie C. Slemp. Memorial services will be officiated by his nephew, Rev. Dr. Anatalio C. Ubalde, Jr., at New Tacoma Cemetery on Monday, April 13 at 10:00 a.m. Arrangements by Tacoma Funeral Home and Cemeteries, 564-1311.

Alvin "Jack" Oelke
Alvin "Jack" Oelke, 83, passed away April 9, 1998. He was born Oct. 20, 1914 in Pierce, NE, and had been a long time resident of Puyallup. He was a member of the Puyallup Eagles Lodge and the Teamsters Local of Tacoma. He was a loving companion, father, grandfather, and brother who will be greatly missed. He is survived by Eugenia; children Jody Folk and Madeline Misner, both of Puyallup, and Jack Oelke of NC; sisters Marion and Lauretta, both of NE, and Cleota of CA; 13 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren. Funeral services Saturday, April 11, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup.

Catherine Jean Johnson
Catherine Jean Johnson passed away on Thursday, April 2, 1998. She was born in Calgary, Alberta, on Sept. 4, 1917. Her family moved to Washington and after graduating from Stadium High School she attended the nursing program at St. Joseph Hospital. After becoming a registered nurse, she joined the Army Nurse's Corps and served her country honorably during World War II. Following the war, she had a long and successful career as a surgical and E.R. nurse at Tacoma General Hospital. Her final service to the community was at St. Joseph Hospital, where she volunteered in Occupational Therapy. "Auntie Kay" is survived by five nieces: Maureen Crystal of Tallahassee, FL, Michele Austin of Tacoma, Arleen Ihm of Tacoma, Linda Boyer of Lake Palmer, Kris Johnson of Lakewood; one nephew, Robert Austin of Wauna; one grandniece, Alexandra Austin of Wauna; two grandnephews, Jonathon Ihm of Tacoma, Robert Austin, III of Wauna. Although faced with many years of physical adversity, challenges and pain, she was a source of inspiration, humor, and a positive force. Her family and many good friends will miss her. Contributions to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. Cryptside service will be Saturday, April 11, 1998, 10:00 AM at Tacoma Mausoleum located at 5302 South Junett in Tacoma. Doris Marie Merz
Teacher Dorie was called home to be with her Risen Lord and Savior on April 8, 1998. She was a kindergarten teacher at Concordia Lutheran School in Tacoma for the last 11 years. Even battling cancer, Dorie wanted to continue teaching. She loved teaching children and sharing the love of Christ with them. Dorie was also a silent but supportive partner with her husband John in developing and operating Pioneer Place Alzheimer Residence in Tacoma. She was born Doris Marie Heinz on July 3, 1953 in York, NE. Dorie grew up in Waco, NE, and attended and graduated from Concordia Teachers College in Seward, NE. Dorie and John were best friends for 25 years. They were college sweethearts for two years before getting married on January 19, 1975. The marriage of 23 years was blessed with three children, Alex (22) and wife Stephanie, Megan (19) and Molly (16). Other survivors include her sister, Margaret and Dean Mays, and father Victor Heinz, all of Lincoln, NE; Robert J. Merz, father-in-law; sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice and Chuck Tomac of Milwaukie, OR, Stephen and Sonya Merz of Bellingham, Michael and Janet Merz of Wenathcee, Michelle and Dennis Lehmeyer of Redmond, Carl and Lynda Merz of Seabeck, Jane and Dave Miletich of Vancouver; and 26 nieces and nephews. Dorie was preceded in death by her mother, Esther Heinz, and her mother-in-law, Alice Merz. Dorie will be remembered for her devotion to her family and her students and the unconditional love she shared with all. She was also a dedicated Nebraska Cornhusker fan. Viewing at Tuell-McKee Funeral Home on Saturday, April 11 from 10am-4pm. A memorial service celebrating the life of Dorie will be held on Monday, April 13 at 1 p.m. at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 140 E. 56th St., Tacoma. A family and friend graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. April 13th at Tahoma National Cemetery, 18600 S.E. 240th St. in Kent, WA. If desired, memorials may be made to Concordia Lutheran School or Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, c/o John B. Merz, 5001 112th St. E., Tacoma, WA 98446. Edna Carlson
Edna Carlson was born July 2, 1908 in Clarksville, AR, and passed away April 9, 1998 in Tacoma, WA. She worked as a seamstress for Klopfenstein's for many years. She was a talented artist who painted pictures. She also enjoyed sewing quilts, clothing and table cloths. She was a former member of the Assembly of God Church of Puyallup, belonging to the Women's Ministries. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Carlson. She is survived by her nephew, Jack Brown (Sarah) of Sumner; niece Joyce Speek (Joe) of Lakewood; nephew Sam Brown (Mildred) of Nashville, TN; and many great-nieces and -nephews. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 10, 1998 from 11 AM to 9 PM, and Saturday from 9 AM to 1:30 PM with graveside services at 1:30 PM. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Helen Candace Scott
Helen Candace Scott, 97, died early Saturday, April 4, 1998, after a short battle with cancer. She was born in Tacoma and lived here all of her life. Helen worked for over 50 years in the accounting dept. of the northern Pacific Railway at the Tacoma Union Station. She was preceded in death by her mother Alta and twin sisters Ruth and Gladys. Helen was a member of St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church, the University Guild, Pi Omicron Sorority, the Quax Club and Tacoma Art Museum. Helen is survived by cousins: James Scott, Dorothy McKelvey, Tacoma; Leota Peterson, Anacortes; Shirley Rough, Colville; John Scott, White Horse, Yukon; Emery Scott, Centralia; Mary Jonas, Puyallup; godchildren Cheryl Williams, Patty Sumich, Penny Morrow, Tacoma; their mother and good friend, Lillian Steele. Loved and honored by her friendship, the Stageberg family: Denny, Judy, Zach and Joey. Helen and her two sisters loved to dance. She would have wanted to become a professional dancer, but her devotion to her family and work kept her from it. Helen, you are once again dancing with Ruth and Gladys. We wish to thank Hospice for her final few days of care. All memorials and remembrances may be made to St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church, 36th and N. Gove Street. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, April 14, 1998, 2:00pm, St. Luke's Memorial Episcopal Church, with inurnment in the Columbarium. Arrangements by Gaffney, Cassedy-Allen and Buckley-King Funeral Home.
