Lloyd Beell
8-13-11 - 9-25-01
Lloyd Beell, 90, passed away peacefully on September 25, 2001 at his daughter’s home in Auburn, WA. He met and married his wife, Marion Taylor, in Tacoma in 1936. Lloyd worked for Northern Pacific/ Burlington Northern Railroad for 25 years, and retired in 1976. He will be greatly missed by his family. Lloyd is survived by daughters, Marilyn (Tony) O’Haleck of Auburn and Deborah (Nic) Fernandez of Tacoma; sons, Jerry (Karen) Beell of Tacoma; Gordon (Mary) Beell of Yelm and Prof. Thomas Beell of Ames, Iowa. He was a wonderful grandpa to 8 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Lloyd is now walking in the love and light with his wife, Marion and granddaughter, Angela. A memorial reception will be held on Saturday, October 6th at 3:00 PM. Please contact Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 272-1414 for the address.

Elizabeth “Betty” J. LeMay
Age 69, born May 8, 1932 in Gifford, ID, died September 30, 2001 in Puyallup. Moved to Skyway in 1953 from Idaho, and to Puyallup in 1990. Married Howard on January 9, 1952 in Seattle. Retired from Boeing in 1989 after 35 years of service. Betty enjoyed bowling, music box collecting, and was an avid baseball fan (Seattle Mariners). Preceded in death by son Dennis, February 1971. Survived by husband Howard LeMay, Puyallup; son Steven and Renee LeMay, Maple Valley; grandchildren Alyssa and Mason; sisters Rosemary Newman, Boise, ID; and Laberta Thompson, Hines, OR. Visitation will be Wednesday, Noon to 5pm, and Thursday, 9am to Noon, at Greenwood Funeral Home, with funeral services Thursday at 1 p.m. Burial in Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton. Memorials may be made to Pierce County Medic One.

Jessie Mae Niesen (Sauerwein)
Age 92, formerly of Tacoma, Washington and Michigan, died September 29, 2001, after a sudden illness, in Fayetteville, WV. Born January 22, 1909, daughter of Fred and Agnes Sauerwein. She was preceded in death by her husband Bob, married 50 years; and sisters Agnes, Freda and Pearl. Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl Ratliff and husband John of Fayetteville, WV; three grandchildren, Ron and wife Cindy Ratliff, Jeri-lyn and husband Jon George, and Robert and wife Liza Ratliff, all from Michigan; also 4 great-grandchildren, with one expecting. Services at Fir Lane Memorial Park and Funeral Home. Friends may call from 1-7 pm Thursday for visitation. Funeral services Friday, 2:00 pm at Fir Lane Chapel. Interment to follow in Fir Lane Memorial Park. Grandsons and family members will be pallbearers.

Alice Guthrie Yore
Alice Yore, 61, of Bremerton, died of cancer at Harrison Hospital, September 25, 2001. She was born in Seattle to John D. and Isabel Guthrie, August 18, 1940. She spent her early years in Seattle, moving to Mercer Island in 1952, becoming a member of the first graduating class of Mercer Island High School. She attended the University of Washington, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. She worked as an Operating Room Nurse beginning in 1962, and the last 16 years at Harrison Hospital until her retirement in 2000. Alice is survived by her daughters, Amy (Brian) Hanson Halquist of University Place, Abigail (Marty) Hanson Smith of Federal Way; her granddaughter, Brittanie Jean Halquist; her sister, Janet Goff of Cardiff, CA; her companion of many years, William Hanson; sever cousins, and her cat Sullivan. At her request, no services are planned. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kitsap County Humane Society, Harrison Hospital Foundation Operating Room Education Fund, or a favorite charity. Arrangements are under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel.

Allan White Shaw, Jr.
Allan White Shaw, Jr. was born on May 3, 1919 to Allan W. Shaw, Sr. and Ida Virginia Maley Shaw in Daytona, FL. He was the oldest of 3 boys (brothers Robert and B. Chandler). He attended Bethany College. In 1941 Allan married Evelyn Marie Wilson. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1942 and became a fighter pilot. He served during WWII in the European Theater. His son, Allan 3rd, was born in Munich, Germany during Allan, Jr.’s tour of duty. His eldest daughter Amy was born in Charleston, SC; daughter Alice was born in Pinehurst, NC and daughter Aileen was born in Tacoma. Allan and Evelyn moved to Tacoma, WA in 1959. After retiring from the Air Force with the rank of Major in 1963. Allan worked for Boeing and as a car salesman and real estate property manager before retiring for a second time. He was quite active in the Eagles, Masons, Elks, Lake City Community Church Choir, and a local harmonica group for several years. He also enjoyed memberships in the American Legion and Boy Scouts of America. He was particularly fond of music of all types, fishing, flying and ice cream. In 1987 Allan’s first wife, Evelyn passed away after a long battle with cancer. He enjoyed traveling around the country for several years. Allan married Ara Marie Patton. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. He spent some time in Pioneer Nursing Home and after a fall resulting in a broken hip, he was transferred to Manor Care where Marie joined him. Allan was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn; his daughter, Aileen and his brother, Robert. He is survived by his second wife, Ara; son, Allan W. Shaw III (Martha); daughter, Amy (Nelson) Hall; daughter, Alice (Ayers) Hyde (Henry); 5 grandsons, Allan W. Shaw IV (Mellissa), Matthew Shaw, Glen Ayers, Paul Nelson and Shawn Nelson; 2 granddaughters, Lt. Anna Ayers Stanley and Melissa Shaw; and 3 great-granddaughters. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Allan W. Shaw, Jr. will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon on October 5, 2001 during a private service. Memorial services will be Monday, October 8, 2001, 2:00 PM at the Mountain View Funeral Home Celebration of Life Center.

Dale Delos Borden
Dale Borden was a lifelong resident of Ashford, WA. He was born October 13, 1916 in National, WA, the eleventh and last child of Anna and “Ted” Borden. He passed away quietly on September 27, 2001 at St. Clare Hospital in Tacoma after several years of valiantly fighting the ravages of congestive heart disease and leukemia. He was preceded in death by his best friend and stepson, George Mahon; his stepdaughter, Nina Lee Stanley, as well as all of his brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Mable Borden; his daughter, LaNorma Borden of Ashford; his daughter, Glenna Clark and husband Jerry of Snohomish; grandchildren, Debbie Weese, Mark Mahon, Chris Clark, Brandon Clark, Leslie Collins and Barbara Collins Young. Dale loved the outdoors, with hunting, fishing and clam digging his favorite activities. He and Mable bought cones in the area for many years. He earned his living working as a logger and as a heavy equipment operator for Pierce County. He retired in 1979. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 1 PM in the Eatonville Community Center, 305 Center St. W. Fir Lane Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Edward Ellsworth Guy
Edward Ellsworth Guy, age 67, of San Salvador, El Salvador and Samish Island, WA, died in Guatemala City on Friday, September 21. He was born in Santa Monica, California on August 26, 1934, the son of John and Florence Moorman Guy. He was raised in Southern California, Virginia and Oregon. Ed was a 1952 graduate of Salem High School in Salem, Oregon. He graduated from Graceland College, Lamoni, Iowa, in 1957; Central Washington University in 1961; and received his Master’s of Social Work from the University of Missouri in 1966. He also spent a year studying at Mexico City College from 1960-61. Ed served in the U.S. Army from 1952-55. He be- came an ordained minister of The Community of Christ church while a student at CWU. To support himself and pay for his education, Ed worked a variety of jobs, including logging, high-rise construction, as a river boat hand in Alaska and, proudly, as a U.S. Forest Service smoke jumper out of McCall, Idaho for several summers. After getting his degree in social work, Ed worked three years in Kansas City, MO, as a family and crisis intervention counselor. In 1971 he moved to the highlands of Honduras to head up La Buena Fe Mission. There, he began what would be his true life’s work as a minister of the Gospel, developmental worker and human rights advocate. He moved from Honduras to El Salvador in 1983 and worked tirelessly there and in Guatemala to relieve suffering, giving spiritual and material aid to the poor and dispossessed of these war-torn countries. A tireless humanitarian and a man of un- shakable faith, Ed will be remembered as a fearsome soldier in the war against oppression, and a tenacious advocate for those less fortunate. He was a man whose caring and compassion for others had no boundaries. He enriched our lives and made the world a better place. In return, he asked for nothing. He is survived by his parents, John and Florence of Samish Island; two sisters, Patricia Guy and her partner Neel Parikh of University Place, and Eva Greenwald and her husband Dan of Bayview, WA. He is also survived by nephew Jason Greenwald, his wife Nadine Mosness and daughter Anna of Lynnwood, WA; and his niece Jessica Greenwald of Seattle; numerous cousins, colleagues, and countless friends throughout the United States and the world. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, October 6th at 3:00 pm at The Community of Christ church at 11507 Scott Rd., Samish Island. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to either Outreach International, P.O. Box 210, Independence, MO 64051- 1210; or Community of Christ El Salvador Mission, c/o Terry Shelton, P.O. Box 535095, Grand Prairie, TX 75053-5059.

Louise Conrad
Louise Conrad, born May 21, 1919 in Oklahoma, passed away peacefully September 29, 2001 in Tacoma. She is survived by sons John and Joseph Glover, daughters Sharon, Karen and Cathryn; numerous grandchildren and great- grandchildren. At Louise’s request there will be no services. Arrangements by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 272-1414.

Nicholas J. Sumich, Sr.
Nicholas J. Sumich, Sr., 90, a longtime Tacoma resident, died September 30, 2001. He was a member of the Carpenter’s Union Local #470 and a commercial fisherman. Nick’s passions were wood- working and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Nick is survived by his wife, Minnie; daughter Wini Buckley (Bruce); son Nick (Patti); grandchildren Robert Buckley (Paula), Donna Buckley, Jim Buckley (Joni), Kelli Whittaker (Matt), Kimberly Sumich; great-grandchildren Alec, Alayna and Mark Buckley. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held Wed- nesday, October 3, 2001, 11:00 am at the 1002 South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Interment Calvary Cemetery. Arrangements by Gaff- ney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King Funeral Home. “He was dearly loved by his family and will be greatly missed.”

RUBY GOOSCHIN
Ruby Gooschin passed away Friday, September 28, 2001. Preceded in death by her husband, Victor F. Gooschin. She was 82 years old and a 60 year resident of Tacoma. She is survived by her son, Fred Gooschin, Tacoma; her daughter, Tammy Harrington; her son-in-law, Bill Harrington; grandson, Jim Harrington and granddaughter, Jessica Harrington; also several nieces and a nepehw. Services will be held Thursday, October 4 at 2:00 p.m in the Mt. View Garden Chapel, followed by burial in Mountain View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Cancer Society.

Robert B. Lavorini
10/01/24 - 3/13/01 Robert was born and raised in Tacoma and passed away in Santa Rosa, CA from cancer. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1942. He entered the service during WWII, serving with the 9th Army Field Artillery in Europe and Korea. He is survived by a sister, daughter, 2 granddaughters and 2 great- grandchildren. At his request there was no funeral or memorial service.

Robert “Schmitty” Schmid
9/4/14 - 9/27/01
A man of many talents and legacies has been called to a higher power at the age of 86. Schmitty spent his life working hard and playing hard. He was a success at all of his endeavors. He volunteered in WWII as a glider pilot. He was the founder and last survivor of the Skiquatic Follies which originated in the 30’s. He owned a gym and built his own equipment during the late 30’s through 1974; during this time he had earned many weight lifting championships. One of his favorite talents over the years has been challenging anyone to “one arm push ups” for a $1. He always won!!!! While following his dream, “body building”, he also worked as a street car conductor. After he sold his gym he invested his money in real estate and has done well. He will always be loved, remembered and deeply missed. When we hear “enough said”, we will think of Schmitty! Schmitty is survived by his wife, 2 daughters, 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great- grandchildren, 1 brother and 1 nephew. Per request, there will be no services.
