Steven C. Andre
Born January 9, 1949, Steven C. Andre passed away peacefully on September 25, 2001. Steve is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 22 years, Theresa (aka Tee Morin); three beautiful daughters, Heather, Holly and Heidi; his mother, Mary Katherine Andre of Auburn, Washington; his two sisters, Janet Dammeier and her husband Brian, Jane Scott and her husband Roger. He is preceded in death by his father, Willard Andre. Steve also leaves behind nieces and nephews, whom he loved and cherished. They were an important part of his life. Steve will be fondly remembered by Kurt, Bruce, Mark, Greg and Bowen for his humor, guidance, support, and zest for life. Steve graduated from Charles Wright Academy and University of Puget Sound. He was a lifelong member of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club. Steve is remembered for his 15 years of dedication and devotion to coaching and guidance of young people, and as a patient teacher and a loving companion. Steve’s greatest passion was dry fly-fishing. His fondest memories were his fishing trips to Silver Creek, Henry’s Fork, Smith River, Yakima River, Yellowstone, Madison, Firehole and numerous others. Steve had a natural ability to read the river, the fish and the hatch. Among his fishing peers, he uniquely took time out to share his knowledge. This gift of knowledge will live on through their enjoyment of the River. Steve also enjoyed time spent at his cabin in Packwood, skiing, entertaining and sitting around a campfire with family and friends. With great ease, he welcomed friends and new acquaintances into his home. He will be remembered. Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, October 4th at the Taco- ma Yacht Club, 5401 N. Waterfront Drive, Tacoma. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Nature Conservancy of Idaho, Silver Creek Preserve, P.O. Box 165, Sun Valley, ID 83353, in memory of Steve Andre.

Fred R. Austin
Born Sept. 12, 1938. Passed Sept. 24, 2001. Retired US Army 1975. Retired Pierce County 2001. Fred was a loving father and husband. He was doing what he loved best when he passed, fishing with friends. He will be dearly missed. A military memorial service will be held at Dryer Mortuary, 220 134th St. S., Parkland, WA, on Saturday Sept. 29th at 11:00 a.m.

Cody E. Bryan, Jr.
Cody E. Bryan, Jr. of Shelton passed away at his home in Shelton on Tuesday, September 25, 2001. He was 75. Survivors mourning his passing include his wife of 51 years, Helen, son Cody (Kassivin) of University Place, daughter Susan (Wes) Nicholson of Silverdale, daughter Teresa (John) Mathis of University Place, daughter Sheila (Michael) Criscione of Federal Way, as well as 9 grandchildren. He was preced- ed in death by son Fred in 1999. Cody, who retired as a Major, served for 24 years as a member of the Air Force, including service in Italy, Korea and Vietnam. Following his retirement from the service, he attended the University of Puget Sound where he earned his MBA, and became a licensed CPA. He became an Assistant Professor at Western Washington State University in Bellingham, retiring in 1988. He and his wife then moved to Shelton. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 29 at Mountain View Funeral Home, Lakewood, in the Garden Chapel at 5:00 pm. The burial will be on Monday, Octo- ber 1 at Tahoma National Ceme- tery in Kent at 1:00 pm.

Orbie Dean Cothern
Dean, 53, went fishing on September 24, 2001. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and son. Born March 21, 1948. Fishing was his passion; he also enjoyed hunting and camping. He had many friends and family that loved him very much. Orbie was a Command Sergeant Major in the National Guard and a full time technician supervisor. Survived by his loving wife, Doris Cothern; son Lowell; daughter Suzanne; grandchildren Ashley, Austin and Saige, all of Tacoma; his mother, Artie Janice Hixon; brothers James (Spike) Cothern; sister Leslie Janice Stroud, of Yaki- ma; brother Lowell Cothern of San Diego, CA; his sister-in-law, Nancy Gocke, and her family, who thought of him as almost their husband and father. He was always there for everyone. He served his country in the military for 36 years, in the Army, then the National Guard. Services at Mountain View Funer- al Home, Saturday the 29th at 3 PM in the Valley Chapel, 584-0252. He will be greatly missed by all.

Edith Jean Pierce
Edith Jean Pierce, loving wife, mother and grandmother, passed away on September 25, 2001. She was born Edith Jean Neabeack in The Dalles, Oregon on May 17, 1924, and spent her youth in Corvallis, Oregon. She attended Ore- gon State University and served in the United States Navy during World War II. She married Gerard Leon Pierce on April 18, 1946. As an Army officer’s wife, Edith raised her family of two sons all over the world, spending time in Japan, Germany, and many places in the United States. She and her husband, Gerry, retired in Tacoma in 1971. Edith loved to garden and had a special fondness for roses. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Hong Kong. She will truly be missed by her husband Gerry, her sons Steven (Kathleen) and David (Lilly), her sister Doris, granddaughters Michelle, Meghan and Erin, and many nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be held Sun- day, September 30, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at the 1002 South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Interment at Taho- ma National Cemetery, Kent. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King.

Mary Eileen (Ebeling) Hansen
Eileen closed her eyes and went to heaven peacefully, September 23, 2001, to join her mother and father, William Roland Ebeling and Beatrice Mary Wildes. Eileen was born March 26, 1928 in Bismarck, North Dakota. She moved to Taco- ma in 1939 and graduated from Stadium High School in 1946. Three years later she married Stan Hansen, her husband of 52 years. She leaves the world her devoted sons, Randy (Ann) and Thomas; her greatest joy, her grandsons Bryan and Barry; her best friend and sister, Joy Marvik (Larry); and many, many great friends, nieces, nephews and cousins. At Eileen’s request, no services will be held. A celebration of her life, over sandwiches and coffee at her home, will be held at a later date.

Elizabeth (Betty) Schimling
Elizabeth (Betty) Schimling, born February 11, 1920 in Alder, WA, passed away peacefully September 26, 2001 in Tacoma. Betty was a licensed cosmetologist for 34 years. She opened her first beauty salon in 1937 in Ea- tonville, WA, and owned Pin Up Beauty Salon and University Place Beauty Salons. On November 3, 1945 she married Hal Schimling, who preceded her in death on October 26, 1998. Betty’s political career began in 1951 when she lobbied for professional license regulations. The following year she was appointed by Governor Langlie as Washington State License Inspector, a position she held until 1957. From 1957- 65, she was International Rep- resentative for Barbers & Beauticians International Union, and AFL-CIO Legislative Representative for labor-management relations. In September 1958 she accepted the position of Field Agent for the WA State Labor Council, AFL-CIO. Her assignments included special emphasis in consumer legislation. Betty held the position of Secretary-Treasurer for the Washington Committee on Consumer Interests. She taught cosmetology vocation- al classes at L.H. Bates Voc/Tech Institute from 1967-68. She was also active on many boards and committees, including COPE Field Agent, Governor’s Energy Policy Council; Advisory Committee for Women’s Institution in Purdy; Board member for Local #11, WA State Selective Service System; Consumer Advisory Committee to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners; member of Board of Directors for Consumer Federation of America, Washington, D.C.; Consumer Credit Counseling Services of King County; Democratic Precinct Committee person, Pierce County Districts 26-33 for 8 years; 1972 Delegate to National Democratic Convention; in 1975, was nominated to “Who’s Who of American Women”. Betty enjoyed real estate with her dad, and fishing. She is survived by son Marc D. Schimling, owner of Eagle Construction in Tacoma; daughter Debra Christnacht of Fircrest; brother Joe Sander of Alder, WA; grandchildren Libby, Jessica, Andy and Erika; and loyal friend Connie Hayden. The family would like to thank the staff of University Place Care Center and Franciscan Hospice for their loving care and compassion. A memorial reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 29 from 11 a.m.- 1 p.m. at the Elks Lodge #174, 1965 S. Union. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Diabetes Association. Arrangements by Tuell-McKee Funeral Home, 272-1414.

James L. Minion
Jan. 31, 1926 - Sept. 15, 2001 Loving husband and father, died in Noblesville, IN. Born in Wilmar, MN and lifelong resident of Taco- ma; Charter member of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King; served in WWII; 55-year member of Carpenters Local 470; taught carpentry at Bates College and Old Reliable University, and retired from teaching in 1989. Jim is survived by his wife Marie; 2 sons, James Jr. and Monti; 2 daughters, Connie (Jones) and Laura (Standley); 8 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Preced- ed in death by son Timothy. Donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Disease Foundation.

Michiko Zwosta
Michiko Zwosta, age 68, long time Tacoma area resident, passed away Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Madigan Army Hospital. Survived by her three children, Margaret, John and Patrick; 4 grandchildren, countless friends and extended family. Long time member of the “Tan Popo No Kai” Japanese organization. She will be missed by all, but never forgotten. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 29, 2001, 4:00 PM at the Mt. View Celebration of Life Center, with a reception immediately following. Arrange- ments by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Nina B. Barcott
Nina B. Barcott passed away September 25, 2001. She was born in Bryson City, North Carolina, November 18, 1910. She was very young when she came west with her parents. They settled in Taco- ma and she graduated from Lincoln High School. She worked for the telephone company for many years. After retiring, she and her husband traveled to many places. Nina loved to dance and also to travel. She leaves a brother and two sisters. Visitation will be Friday, 1-9pm and Saturday, 8am-1:30pm, September 28 and 29. Graveside services will be Saturday, September 29, 2001, 1:30 PM, Mt. View Memorial Park. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home. 584-0252.

Pi Chin Helen Matchett 1917 - 2001
Pi Chin Helen Matchett was born on December 15, 1917 in Chung Hwa, Taiwan. The second daughter of an herbal doctor, she was educated in Taiwan and Japan. She worked as a nurse, later managed a department store, several movie theaters and a nightclub. In 1972 she married John W. Matchett, a retired U.S. Marine, and settled in San Diego. Later, they moved to Washington to be closer to their two daughters. She was a talented and strong woman, defying conventions of her time, working to support her six children. She is survived by six children, a stepson and ten grandchildren, who will miss her laughter and unstinting love. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, 11:00 AM in the Garden Chapel at Mountain View Funeral Home in Tacoma, Washington.
