Robert Douglas Westcott
Bob was born July 5, 1949 and passed away July 25 in a Seattle hospital. He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served 2 terms of combat in Vietnam. A former Atlas Foundry employee, he is survived by a large extended family. Military memorial service at Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent, WA, Friday, Sept. 21 at 2:00 PM. Fondly loved and remembered.

Howard L. “Howie” Schwabe
Born in Sherwood, North Dakota in 1918, died at the age of 83. Survived by his wife of 57 years, Sylvia, daughter Janice (Bob) Newberg, son Byron (Kari), 2 broth- ers, 1 sister, 4 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 22 at 3:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home, 320 W. Pioneer, Puyallup. Viewing will be Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm. “Dad, you were wonderful as a father who we love very much. We will always miss your jokes, laughter, and just being our Dad.”

Gary Paul Russell
Gone a Huntin’
Born in Tacoma, WA, 6-13-1942, died instantly due to an automobile accident 9-16-2001 on the Mountain Hwy. After graduating from White River High School in Buckley, WA in 1960, he immediately joined the Air Force, spending most of his time at Vandenberg Air Force Base in CA and finishing his tour in Thule, Greenland in 1964. Gary went to work for Puget Sound National Bank in 1964 (which was bought by Keycorp in ‘93), repossessing anything from couches to automobiles. From ‘72- ’81 he became the manager of the Spanaway Branch, moving to Eatonville in ‘78 , becoming manager of the Eatonville Branch in ‘81, and promoted to Vice President in ‘92. Gary realized his lifelong dream when he finally built his log house, with the help of his father and many friends, moving into the house in 1990. His 2nd lifelong dream came true in July of ‘98, when he retired from the banking business at the age of 56 to follow his dream of traveling, hunting, fishing, camping and horseback riding, AND OH YEA: riding his Harley Davidson with his many biker friends! Gary was a member of the NRA, American Legion, Eatonville Lions and Eatonville Eagles. Also a past President of the Tacoma chapter of the American Institute of Banking. Gary was well loved by everyone in and around Eatonville. As he always told everyone, “To know me is to love me.” He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph Russell of Grandview, WA. He is survived by his mother, Golda Russell of Grandview, WA; his sister, Dana Jones and husband, Ken of Grandview, WA; nephews, Mike Riley and wife, Nicole of Spokane, WA; Joseph Russell of Grandview, WA; Danny Riley and wife Alta of Tri-Cities, WA and David Riley of Grandview, WA; many close cousins, aunts, uncles, including his fishing buddy, friend and uncle, John Russell of Puyallup, WA. Viewing will be Friday, Sept. 21 from 1-7 PM for those who wish to pay their respects and final good byes. Casket remains closed for the services. Services will be Saturday, Sept. 22 at Fir Lane Chapel, followed by a reception at Eatonville Eagles. Gary will be transported to Grandview, WA on Monday, Sept. 24th, by his sister Dana, and buried next to his father in the Grandview Cemetery. Gary touched so many people in so many ways the list is too long to mention. The family is overwhelmed with the support they have received. The people of Eatonville and the surrounding area are truly an amazing family. Fir Lane Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Dr. William E. Byers (Bill)
Gone Golfing
March 26, 1919 - Sept. 11, 2001
Bill was born in Spokane to William F. and Theresa Rose Byers. Byers served with the OSS in Bur- ma during WWII, and after the war he joined the U.S. Air Force as an officer, living in Germany and Turkey, as well as many places in the U.S.A. Bill returned to the Tacoma/Gig Harbor area in 1967, and taught at Goodman Middle School. Family, music and golf were his lifetime loves. Bill played an ensemble of instruments for the Shrine and the Elks Club bands. An active member of Kiwanis. Bill is survived by his sister Beverly (Bill) Donner of Oak Harbor, his son David (Shirley) Byers of Lacey, his daughter Caroline Witte of Gig Harbor, and his granddaughter Brandy Witte of Seattle. His beloved wife, Martha, preced- ed him in death in 1984. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1:00 PM at United Methodist Church in Lakewood, followed by a gathering of friends and family at his home.

Gunars Abolins
Gunars Abolins, 71, of Tacoma, passed away September 16, 2001. He was born in Latvia, and had lived in Tacoma for 49 years. Gunars worked for St. Regis, Pierce County Schools, and later owned an Audio Visual business before he retired. Survivors include his wife, 2 daughters and a sister and her family. Services will be Friday, September 21, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at the Lynn Funeral Home, 717 Tacoma Ave. So. (253 272 2131). Contributions may be made to the Latvian Education Center, P. O. Box 1221, Shelton, WA. 98584, or a charity of your choice.

Walter D. Wagner
Longtime Puyallup resident Walter David Wagner died peacefully, at the age of 90, on September 18, 2001 in Kent, WA, after a brief illness. Walt was born to David B. and Mary I. (Fah) Wagner on September 15, 1911 in Sheridan, Wyoming. He spent his early years in Lewistown, Montana; graduated from Harlowton High School (Montana) in 1929, and began his career as a dairyman and buttermaker. On December 30, 1934, he married Gerda B. Aaberg in Havre, Montana, and they celebrated a loving marriage of 65 years. Walt joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and was stationed first at North Island - San Diego, California, and then overseas in Okinawa. After Walt’s discharge in 1946, he and Gerda returned to Billings, Montana, where they lived until moving to Puyallup in 1952. They settled on acreage on South Hill where they raised their daughter, Gerda Lee, and Walt continued his career at Foremost Dairies until his retirement in 1971. Walt was active in the Rod and Gun Club of Billings, MT; Meeker Elementary PTA, Camp Fire Girls; and a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church since 1972. After retiring he enjoyed baking and cooking, woodworking, playing cards and playing with his grandchildren. Walt was preceded in death by his wife Gerda, and his sisters Bertha M. Creel and Marguerite S. Trudnowski. Walt will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his daughter and son-in-law, Gerda Lee and Keith Hunter; his two grandchildren, Laura and David of Kent; his sister-in-law, Rose Milsten of Tacoma; and his nephews and nieces. Until recently Walt was a resident of Merrill Gardens Retirement Center in Puyallup, and the family would like to thank the staff for their gentle and loving care. Viewing will be Friday, Sept. 21, 2001 at Mt. View Funeral Home from 11 AM-9 PM. A celebration of Walt’s life will be held at Immanuel Lutheran Church on Saturday, Sept. 22, 2001 at 11 AM at 720 W. Main Avenue, Puyallup. Remembrances may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th Avenue NE, Suite #101, Seattle, WA 98125.

Hans Joachim Riccius
Our beloved father, grandfather, brother and uncle, Hans Riccius, passed away on Tuesday, September 4, 2001. He was born in Germany in 1931, survived WWII, escaped from East Germany, emigrated to Chicago in 1952, moved to Spokane in 1958 and the Seattle/Des Moines/Burien area in 1961. He was a well known figure in the food distribution industry. Though he was officially retired from French's Food Company, for the past 10 years he worked many days a week for Marketing Specialists. His love for life led him to many adventures, spending much time in the San Juans, boating and fishing. The last few years he traveled throughout the world. He is survived by his daughter Sabrina (Sam) Riccius Gilbert, son- in-law Robert Gilbert, grandson Robert Jeremy (R.J.) Gilbert, his sister Ursula Bannister, his nephew Peter Bannister and niece Kirsten Bannister. Private services will be held on Saturday, September 29th at noon.

David E. Murray
Our loving husband, father and grandfather, age 83, went to be with the Lord. He was born in Boston, Mass. David was a Marine Engineer, then worked for United V.L., and later worked for Mr. Vanguard Self Storage. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 31 years, Millie, and is survived by his second wife of 21 years, Rena. Rena and Dave renewed their vows at St. Mary’s Cath. Church on July 13, 1997. He is also survived by 3 step-children and 5 grandchildren. Viewing at Fir Lane F.H. will be from 1-7 PM, Thursday also Friday at 10 AM at St Mary’s Catholic Church, 757 138th St., Parkland. Funeral Friday at 12 Noon, also at the church. Reception following.

Raymond Herbert Parks
Raymond Herbert Parks was born September 15, 1930 in San Francisco, CA, and passed away on September 19, 2001 at St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma, after complications from surgery. Ray served in the U.S. Army from 1946 to 1956, where he was on active duty in the Korean War and served inactive duty in the U.S., Japan, Eniwetok Atoll and Germany. He lived the past 45 years in the Puget Sound area, where he worked as a warehouseman for the Coca Cola Company, American Biscuit Company, HD Baker and Love Electric. He semi-retired in 1980 and took on several part-time jobs, and retired from St. Peter Hospital in Olympia in 1995. In 1998 Ray and his wife Mary moved from Olympia to Puyallup to be closer to their children and grandchildren. All through his life his affection for dogs was evident, as he always had a dog by his side. Ray had a green thumb and along with it, a passion for working in his garden, growing vegetables and landscaping. He enjoyed walking his dog and along the way, chatting and sharing gardening tips with neighbors. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 49 years, Mary; his son, Raymond Joseph and wife Marilyn of Gig Harbor; daughters Diane Carey of Puyallup, Bonnie and her husband Cliff Markuson of Puyallup; grandchildren Jared, Sarah and Dustin Parks, Shawn and Kyle Carey; his mother, Genevieve Parks of San Francisco; his brother and sister, Ernie and Evelyn Tealdi of California. Memorial services will be held on Friday, September 21st at 3:00 pm at Powers Funeral Home in Puyallup. Private inurnment will be in Tahoma National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you send a donation to a charity of your choice.

William Henry Baujan
William Henry Baujan of Gig Harbor, passed away on September 18, 2001 at the Seattle Veterans Hospital as a result of cancer. He was born September 11, 1958 in Stroudsburg, PA, and was 43 years of age at the time of his death. He graduated from Stroudsburg High School in 1976. He was a veteran, serving with the US Army as a helicopter crew chief in Fairbanks, Alaska. He also worked as a Planner for Boeing. He loved riding motorcycles and enjoyed boating. He was preceded in death by his sister, Yvonne Baujan, and by his parents, John and Alice Baujan. He is survived by his wife, Cathy (Benn) Baujan; daughter Candice Baujan and Justin Carr; brother John Baujan and his wife Shirley of Pennsylvania; by his loving four-legged companions, Chamois and Mugsy; and other extended family and friends from all over the country. Viewing will be held on Saturday, September 22, 2001 at 9:15 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church, North 12th and J Streets, Tacoma. Funeral Mass will be held following the visitation at 10:00 AM at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society in his memory. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to Dr. Montgomery and the wonderful caring nurses and doctors of the Seattle Veterans Hospital for their sincere commitment.
