Ruth Anne Murphy Evans
Ruth Anne Murphy Evans, passed away August 26, 2001 at St. Joseph Hospital in Tacoma. She was born August 25, 1917 in St. Maries, ID to the late Carl Elof and Agnes M. Anderson. The family moved to the Spokane Valley in February 1920. Ruth graduated from West Valley High School in 1935 and she then attended nursing school at Sacred Heart Hospital, from which she graduated in 1938. She also graduated from their school of anesthesia the same year. Her first nursing job was at the Providence Hospital in Everett, WA, until moving to Tacoma, where she was employed at Tacoma General Hospital. In 1943 Ruth joined the Army Air Corps and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. She was stationed at Santa Ana, CA. After her discharge she returned to Tacoma and was once again employed at Tacoma General Hospital. She married Dr. Thomas B. Murphy in 1949 and he passed away in June of 1977. In June of 1981 she married W. Earle Evans and he passed away in February of 1998, in Rancho Mirage, CA. She then returned to Tacoma where she resided until her death. Ruth is survived by two sisters, Marion Savland of Spokane and Hazel Hodge of Kennewick, WA; stepson, Dr. T. (Shirley) Murphy, Gig Harbor; 3 nieces and one nephew. Inurnment at New Tacoma Cemetery. Virginia Elsie Davis
Sept. 23, 1922 - Sept. 1, 2001 Virginia died peacefully in her sleep on Sept. 1st in Puyallup, Washington in her home at age 78. She was born to William Arthur Richman and Lottie Florence Boggs in LeRoy, Iowa where she attended LeRoy High School and played on the Girls Championship Basketball Team. She graduated from High School in 1940. She moved to Gresham, Oregon in 1946 with her husband, William Edwin (Ed) Davis, where for several years she worked on a family farm and was a homemaker. She was an active long time member of the Gresham Assembly of God Church. By 1975 she and her husband moved to Hermiston, Oregon to retire and work part-time at Lamb Weston Inc. She was a member of the Stanfield Assembly of God Church until Edwin’s death in 1998. She then moved to live with her oldest son for 3 1/2 years in Puyallup, WA. She was preceded in death by her one husband, one brother, Bill Richman and one sister, Florence Deemer, both residing in Iowa. She is survived by her sons Ralph (Janet) of Puyallup, Washington and Dennis Davis (Becky) of Pasco, Washington; daughter Carol Fox (Rick) of Ridgefield, Washington. She leaves behind four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Memorial service will be held at the New Tacoma Cemeteries and Funeral Home, Evergreen Chapel, 9212 Chambers Creek Road West, Tacoma , Washington 98467, on Sept. 8th, at 2:00 PM. Arrangements by New Tacoma Cemetery (253) 564-1311.

MR. SHIRLEY WEKELL
Shirley Matheson Wekell of Tacoma, 86, passed away Sept. 3, 2001. Born in Grand Forks, BC, April 29, 1915, he moved to Tacoma and graduated from Stadium High in 1933, then attended College of Puget Sound. In the 60 years that he worked for and owned North Star Glove Co. in Tacoma, he started and managed a sewing plant in Orting, WA in 1944, became company President in 1962, and combined both operations into one in 1963 in Nalley Valley-Tacoma. He retired in 1991 and the firm is operated today by his two sons. Shirley was well known in Orting where he served as Mayor (1952- 56), was a member of the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge #71. He helped with the Daffodil Float from Orting as early as the late 1940's, was President of the Daffodil Festival in 1964, and was instrumental in starting the Daffodilians in 1965. Upon moving back to Tacoma, Shirley became active with the Afifi Shrine Royal Order of Jesters #104, the Tacoma Elks #174, and reaffirmed his membership with Bethany Presbyterian Church. He also served on the National Board of the Work Glove Mfg'rs. Assn. Along with his wife, they loved world travel. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lois, and their four children: Tom (Joan), Rob (Connie), Kathryn (Paul) Brown, all of Tacoma, and Shirley Lois (Jim) Wood of Lakeview, MI. Grandchildren are Jane Pulliam, Megan Amend, Jeremy Wekell, Matiele and Kelsey Wekell, Anna Musselman, Deb Houchins, Stephen and Becky Brown, Teri Sherman, Lisa Saxton, Julie and Pam Kellogg. There are four great- grandsons. Together with many other family, friends and business acquaintances, he will be greatly missed. He was an inspiration to many. A memorial service to celebrate Shirley's wonderful life will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2001 at 2:00pm at the Afifi Shriners Center, 815 S. Vassault (off S. 12th St. behind Temple Beth El),Tacoma, WA; (253) 565-2055. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that remembrances be sent to Shriners Children’s Hospital, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Pkwy, Portland, OR 97201.

Sue M. Gierke
Sue McCord Gierke, a Tacoma native, born to F. B. McCord and Erna Badertscher on March 4, 1916; and passed away in Federal Way on Sept. 3, 2001. Sue graduated from Lincoln High School in 1935, and 2 years later she married Paul Gierke. She devoted her life to her husband of 64 years and her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Sue loved camping in the family trailer, weekends at the beach house on Lake St. Claire, gardening, bowling, and especially taking care of her family. Grammie Sue was dearly loved and will be greatly missed. She is at peace. Sue is survived by her husband Paul Gierke; 3 children, Laura Wooster (Roy), Steven (Susan) and Paula Jean; 4 grandchildren, Scott and Paul Wooster, Suzanne Mirante and Morgan Gierke; 2 great-grandchildren, Doug Yates and Amanda Mirante and her “forever friend” Shirley Parks. The family wishes to thank the people at Hallmark Manor in Federal Way for the care and compassion Sue received over the past 16 months. The family will celebrate Sue’s life on Sun., Sept. 9th. Sylvia Haun Born July 2, 1919, in Minsk, Russia and passed away September 2, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. The youngest of six children, she was orphaned at age two. Upon adoption by her aunt and uncle, Joseph and Dora Lipman, she, along with sister, Leia, and brother, Harry, came to the U.S. and lived at Ellis Island for 6 months. She was raised in Sheridan and Gillette, Wyoming, and was supported by the family business, The Lipman Clothing and Shoe Store. She married Harold Edward Haun in 1945. He preceded her in death in 1978. Also preceding her in death were her parents, Joseph and Dora Lipman; sisters, Anna, Sonja, Leia; brothers: Willie and Harry; and great-grandson, Liam Simpson. Sylvia loved spending time with her family, flower gardening, traveling (especially to Russia - and to Reno for the slot machines). She lived many years in Tacoma and in the Key Peninsula area. Sylvia is survived by her son, Ed Haun, Auburn; daughter, Diana Sammons, Lakebay; 4 grandchildren: Lisa (Jason) Frye, Oregon; Michael (Suzanne) Sammons, Bremerton; Jodie (Bill) Simpson, Gig Harbor; and Sylvia Sammons, Seattle. She is also survived by her pride and joy of 4 great-grandchildren: Robyn, Rachel and Ryan Frye and Kylee Simpson. Celebration of Life will be September 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Haven of Rest Chapel, Hwy 16, Gig Harbor. The family asks that remembrances be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Arrangements by Haven of Rest.

Teresa M. Brammer
Teresa M. Brammer, RN, of Renton, died August 21 after suffering a stroke. She was 37 years old. She was born in Tacoma on April 22, 1964. She was a graduate of Sumner High School and the University of Washington. She was descended from many early settlers of the Pierce County area. Among these were early Danish immigrants, Scottish employees of the Hudson Bay Company and English settlers that came at the turn of the century from Ohio (originally from colonial Virginia and England). She is also descended from the Nisqually Indian Tribe. She is survived by her mother, Patricia Svinth Brammer, of the home; her father and stepmother, Richard A. (and Gladys) Brammer, Sr., of Belfair, WA; a brother, Richard A. Brammer, Jr. of Renton; and three sisters: Mary P. Briggs of Shelton, WA; and Jean E. Lloyd and Nancy L. Sager, both of Vancouver, WA. She is also survived by a great aunt, Cecelia Carpenter of Tacoma; a great uncle, Luther Svinth of Tieton, WA; and seven nephews and nieces. Her remains will be buried at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery, date pending.

Eva Josties
Eva A. Josties, resident of Edgewood (Firwood), passed away in Puyallup, September 1st, 2001, at the age of 92. She was born to Bessie “Catherine” (Raycraft) and Alfred Smith in Cadolt, Wisconsin on July 23rd, 1909, and moved to Tacoma in 1918. She graduated from Lincoln High School in the “Class of 1928”, and then attended Knapp Business College. In 1930, at St. James Cathedral in Seattle, she was united in marriage with Edward Josties. Soon after, the couple moved to the Firwood community. She was a very active long-time member of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church of Fife, and was also very active in the Firwood community. She was a Homemaker and a very loving mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband; all three of her brothers; one of her sisters; and also by her son-in-law. She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn Workman of Edgewood; one son, Patrick Josties of Auburn; one sister, Hazel McGinn of Milton; five grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 5th, from 1:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Hills Funeral Home in Puyallup. Rosary services will be held on Thursday, September 6th, at 10:30 AM before Mass. Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, September 6th, 2001 at 11:00 AM at St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. There will be a funeral procession to Woodbine Cemetery in Puyallup where graveside services will be held. If desired, remembrance donations are suggested to St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, 2303 54th Avenue East, Fife, WA 98424.

Joseph T. Tencich
Joseph Tencich, 84, a lifetime Tacoma resident, passed away at his home Sunday, September 2nd, 2001. Born in Tacoma, July 9, 1917, he graduated from Bellarmine Preparatory School in 1935. He is survived by his wife Olive, his sister Mary and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosary at 7:00 PM, September 5, at Gaffney’s Chapel, 1002 S. Yakima. Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM, Thursday, September 6th at Holy Cross Catholic Church. The family requests that memorials be sent to Multicare Hospice of Tacoma.

James Clifford York
March 11, 1927 - Sept. 2, 2001
Died peacefully September 2nd surrounded by loved ones. He will be missed by his wife of 51 years, Lorraine; his children, Linda (Michael) Barnard, Janet (Terry) James, Deborah (Tracy) Bartoy, James Scott (Ginger) York and Mary Beth (Dale) Grassi. He will also be missed by his grandchildren, Todd, Tyler, Ryan and Jacob Barnard, Lindsey Sims, Lauren and Adam Bartoy, Megan and Andrew York and Caitlan and Nicholas Grassi. He is survived by two sisters, Virginia Bailey of Louisa, Kentucky and Helen Sammons of Pataskala, Ohio. Cliff served in the United States Army from 1945-1950, followed by working at Foss Launch and Tug. He was a longtime member of the Boilermaker’s Local 568, working at Tacoma Boat Building and Martinac Ship Building. The family would like to thank Hospice of Tacoma for their care and support. The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made in remembrance of Cliff York to Shriner’s Hospital for Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, Oregon 97201. Sister Consuella Greaney, OSF
Sister Consuella Greaney died Sunday, September 2, 2001 at St. Ann Convent, Tacoma, WA. Sister Consuella was born on October 13, 1906 in County Galway, Ireland to Michael and Margaret Greaney. Sister entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia at Glen Riddle, PA in 1925. She devoted sixty-six years to the ministry of education and social work ministering in California, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming. In 1994 Sister was assigned to the prayer ministry at St. Ann Convent, Tacoma, WA. Sister Consuella is survived by her sister-in-law Mary Greaney, County Meath, Ireland and by nieces and nephews. The Rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 5, 2001 at 7:00 PM. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 11:00 AM. Both services will be held a St. Ann Convent, 6602 South Alaska Street, Tacoma, WA. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery immediately following the Mass. Memorials in Sister Consuella’s name may be sent to the Sisters of St. Francis Retirement Fund at St. Ann Convent. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King Funeral Home.

Sister Roberta (Margaret) McMahon, OP
(January 16, 1914- August 31, 2001)
Sister Mary Roberta was born in Seattle to Irish immigrant parents Thomas and Mary McMahon and died at Providence Hospital, Seattle on August 31. She received her early education from the Tacoma Dominican Sisters at St. Edward School, Seattle. She was a graduate of Holy Names Academy, Seattle and earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Washington. She obtained a Ph.D in Philosophy from St. Louis University. Her teaching ministry during her 65 years as a Tacoma Dominican included 17 years at Holy Rosary High School, Seattle and as professor at the College of Sister Formation and Seattle University, for a combined total of 27 years. After her retirement as a Professor Emeritus, she continued to express her compassion for others through volunteer service at Sacred Heart Parish and at St. Bernadette Convent, Seattle. She had recently resided at Providence St. Joseph Residence, Seattle. Sister Roberta is survived by her brother John and numerous nieces and nephews. She will be fondly remembered for her remarkable dedication to family, students, friends, and her Tacoma Dominican Sisters. She had compassion for all who suffered, and treasured her association with the Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos orphanages in Central America. Funeral Mass will be celebrated Wednesday, September 5, 2001, 7:00 p.m. at St. Bernadette Catholic Church, Seattle (Burien). Interment will be Thursday, September 6, 2001, 11:00 am at Calvary Cemetery in Tacoma. Memorial donations may be made to the Sisters of Saint Dominic Retirement Fund, 935 Fawcett Ave. S., Tacoma, WA 98402. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King Funeral Home, (253) 572-6003.
