Dwight W. Burkheimer

Dwight passed away on his 27th wedding anniversary with family present ending a four month battle with heart disease and multi-system failures. He is survived by his wife, Jean of Puyallup; brother Bruce (Mary) of New Mexico; sister June Foran (Robert) of North Carolina; daughter Heidi Sanders (Kevin), their children Dani, Caleb, and Jalen of Puyallup; daughter Kristen Piper-McFatridge (C. Kevin) of Seattle along with nieces and nephews. He retired from the Air Force after 24 years of service and most recently retired from Puyallup Schools as Chief Custodian at Pope Elementary. He was an active member and helped to build Celebration Lutheran Church and was a charter member of the Puyallup Chapter of TREA. His love of life was enhanced by his belief in God, his family, his beloved cat, Thomas, his strong belief in recycling, walking and simple pleasures of feeding the birds and squirrels. His friends and family will remember him as a kind, loving man who silently helped others in need and always thought of his family first. A service will be held at 2:00 PM on Sept. 8 at Celebration Lutheran Church, 2500 Shaw Rd., Puyallup, WA 98374. Remembrances may be made to the Building Fund at the church.

John Thomas Sloss
Age 15, of Sumner, died August 29, 2001. He was born October 27, 1985 to Tom and Janet Sloss. Preceded in death by brother Scott in 1992 and grandmother Darlene Campbell. He will be missed by his parents, Tom and Janet, sister Shannon, grandparents Don and Beverly Moergeli and Bob Campbell, great-grandmother Pricilla Bassett and many aunts, uncles and cousins. A time of viewing will be held Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2 from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. at Our Savior Lutheran Church, 4519 112th St. E., Tacoma. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Northwest Kidney Foundation. John was truly a gift from God. Though he never spoke a word, the Lord taught us many lessons through John. We are so thankful to God for allowing us the honor and privilege of taking care of John. He was a sweet and loving child. We especially want to express our thanks and gratitude to our family, friends, doctors, therapists, bus drivers, aides and school staff. Thank you for your love, support and touching John in the special way you did. We have been very blessed through each one of you.

Age 75, passed away Tuesday, August 28, 2001 in Lakewood. A memorial service will be offered at the Backstretch Chapel at Emerald Downs at 6PM on Tuesday, Sept. 4th. Alvah B. Howe, Sr.
At 88 years of age, Alvah passed away August 27, 2001 at Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, of heart complications. He was born July 21, 1913 to Alvah B. Howe and Marion Courtney Howe in Tacoma, Washington, where he resided his entire life. He graduated from Stadium High School and attended College of Puget Sound (UPS). He was sole owner of Pioneer Business Forms - third generation - started in Eastern Washington in 1876 by his grandmother Phoebe. During his life he had many loves - family, fly fishing, boating, biking, water skiing, snow skiing, golfing, duck hunting and business. He had been snow skiing in Sun Valley since 1939. This is where he and his wife spent their winters. Another favorite spot was their condo in Sequim, Washington, great for duck hunting and bike riding. He was a life long member of the Tacoma Country and Golf Club, the last charter member of the Tacoma Club, Ancient Skiers, former member of Shrine, Elks Club #174, Washington Athletic Club, Brown Duck Club, and other affiliations in the printing business. Preceded in death by his parents and sister Marion Long Middleton. Survivors include his loving wife of 32 years, Barbara J. Howe; his children Carol Mayo (Robert), Bellevue; Al Howe, Jr., Gig Harbor; Kathie Kreager (William), Mercer Island; George Howe (Kim), Gig Harbor; thirteen grandchildren, one great-grandson and several great nephews and nieces. He was loving, caring, humorous, vigorous, determined, physically fit, tough, disciplined and smart. “A man is famous who is loved by his family .” He is famous. A graveside family service is being held. In lieu of flowers, please make any donation to your favorite charity. A celebration of his life date to be announced in the near future. Arrangements by Mountain View Funeral Home, 584-0252.

Benjamin is survived by daughter Rita Bilderback; son William Thompson; grandchildren Wayne Bilderback, Dennis Bilderback, Roxann Fuller, Lisa Carter; and 8 great-grandchildren. Graveside services are Saturday, Oct. 6th at 3 p.m. at Old Tacoma Cemetery.

Clara J. “Sis” Melville
3/27/05 - 9/28/01
Clara, a long-time resident of Puyallup, passed away on September 28, 2001, at the age of 96. She was born in Pullman, Washington, the youngest of Olive and William Moats’ 10 children. After the death of her father, her mother moved the family to the Seattle area and finally on to Orting. There Clara was active in school programs, especially basketball, while planning a career in education. She achieved her goal by obtaining a Teaching Certificate from Cheney Normal School. It was there she met her husband of 39 years, William Dean Melville, who preceded her in death in 1968. Clara was a 50 year member of the Naomi Chapter No. 13, Order of Eastern Star, in Puyallup. She served as a Worthy Matron and a Worthy Advisor to the Rainbow Girls. She was appointed as a Grand Representative of Virginia and served her term with honors. She was also a 60 year member of the Orting, Rebekah Lodge #31. Clara’s retirement years were filled with joy by her travels to Asia and throughout the United States and Canada. Surviving family members are: her son, Dean Melville (Darlene); her daughter, Mary Lou Latimer (Bob); six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Clara will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by her family and her many friends. A Memorial Remembrance Celebration of Clara’s life will be held on Saturday, October 13th at 1:00 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church, 412 West Pioneer, Puyallup, WA. There will be a reception at the Church following the service. If desired, donations in Clara’s name may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.

Anneliese Kaethe Lina House “OMA”
Age 75, on the day of our Lord Sept. 28, 2001, from above a hand reached down and safely beckoned come, so a tired body gently slept, then left us to go home. Anneliese lived in Puyallup for the last 10 years. She was a loving wife, mother and oma. Anneliese leaves behind her loving husband, Harold, of 40 years; her three children, Barbara, Conni and Theo; and 7 grandchildren, Anika, Tayler, Matthew, Brea, Jonathan, Conner and Chad. Memorial services will be held at Powers Funeral Home, 320 W. Pioneer in Puyallup, on Oct. 8, 2001 at 2:00 pm. Donations are requested to Pierce County Animal Welfare, 8504 Chambers Creek Rd., Tacoma, WA 98467.

Robert Glenn Harris
Age 78, born August 19, 1923, passed away October 4, 2001, surrounded by family and friends, following a brief illness. He was a loving father, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He is survived by his sister, Betty Taylor of Federal Way, WA; children Gary of Harrisburg, OR, Dan of Maui, HI, Russell of Ventura, CA, and Kimberley of Federal Way, WA; 7 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. Services will be held Saturday, October 6, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. in Chambers Creek Chapel, located at New Tacoma Cemetery. Viewing will be held in the chapel 1 hour prior to the service.

Wayne Raymond Afrank
Age 82, a resident of Elma, died Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation for Montesano. He married S. Jane (Tumey) on August 11, 1939 in Elma; she survives him at the family home. Other survivors include 3 children, 7 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct. 6th, 2 p.m. at Whiteside Family Mortuary of Elma.

Eileen LaRoche
Born Feb. 28, 1928 in Bristol, England, died Sept. 30, 2001 in Shelton, WA. She is survived by her husband, Robert LaRoche; daughter Jo Anne, husband Joseph Fiala; son Stephen LaRoche, wife Leslie, granddaughter Carolyn, grandson Steven-Austin; son Michael, wife Julie and grandson Rylan. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6th in Our Lady Queen of Heaven Church, 14601 A Street S., Spanaway, WA.

Edwin J. Briggs Col. (ret.) U.S. Army
Edwin J. Briggs passed away on October 2, 2001. He was born in Perry, Oregon on August 23, 1912, the son of Willie J. and Harriet Watson Briggs, both deceased now. He was raised in LaGrande, Oregon, and it was at college there that he met and married his first wife, Helen Teed. They were married 56 years. Helen died in 1990. Ed entered active military service in September, 1940 as a 2nd Lt. with Co. E, 186th Infantry Regiment, 41st Division. He served in New Guinea during the first Papuan Campaign. He then volunteered for service in Burma with Merrill’s Marauders, and was one of the few remaining original Marauders who played a major role in World War II by retaking the Burma Road from the Japanese, opening the route in to China. He commanded the Khaki Unit, which fought behind enemy lines the entire time. He was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action and the Bronze Star Medal with Oakleaf Cluster and the Purple Heart for combat wounds in action. He was integrated into the Regular Army as a Lt. Colonel while on occupation duty in Japan, following which he served in various command assignments in Europe and in the U.S. He was proud of being an executive officer of the Ranger School when it was formed at Fort Benning, Georgia. He was badly injured in a helicopter crash against a mountain in Korea, but recovered to serve several assignments around the United States. He was promoted to Colonel in 1954, and retired from active service at Fort Lewis, WA, in 1963, where his retirement parade was held. In 1990 he married Dorothy Ligon, and they enjoyed eleven “golden” years together. Besides his wife, he is survived by his five children and their spouses, namely: William and Mildred Briggs, Woodbridge, VA; Rodney and Corrine Guelfi-Briggs, Tacoma; Susan Vojir, Puyallup; Michael and Carol Briggs, Steilacoom; and Julie and Matthew Emerson, Clarksville, TN. He also leaves two stepchildren, Elizabeth Harris, Winston-Salem, NC; and Linda and Jack Westerfield, Puyallup; ten grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. He loved the game of golf and was a long time member of Oakbrook Golf and Country Club. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Lake City Ward. Funeral service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Far West Drive on Monday at 2:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to the American Red Cross or to the Salvation Army. Interment in Fir Lane Memorial Park.
