Hellen Frances Zirkel
Hellen was born on March 25, 1923 in Butte, MT, and passed away on Oct. 2, 2001 in Puyallup, WA. She was married to her loving husband, Sanford, for 53 years. During that time she was a member of the Orting Methodist Church and the Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, Sanford; son Gregory (Rooshelle) Zirkel; daughters Sandra (Brian) Griggs, Susan Weigley Cousin and Ruth Brown; 7 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. A memorial service will be held at the Orting Methodist Church on Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001 at 2:00 pm. Arrangements by Powers Funeral Home, Puyallup.

James A. Yotsko
James Yotsko, a lifetime Tacoma area resident, died October 4, 2001. Mr. Yotsko was an Army veteran and a retired truck driver. He is survived by his wife, Carol, of 48 years; daughters Linda Yotsko of Sumner, and Karen Unruh and husband Lindsey of Longview; grandson Michael Unruh; granddaughters Alexandra Yotsko, Kasey Unruh, Brittany Yotsko. Kjell Finnvik
Kjell Finnvik, born September 10, 1941 in Kolvereid, Norway, died October 2, 2001. He was a member of the Carpenters Local #470, Elks Lodge #174, Gig Harbor Eagles and the Sons of Norway. Kjell fished as a commercial fisherman in Bristol Bay during the summers and worked heavy construction in the off seasons. “Kjell was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a respected, yet humble man with high integrity.” He will be greatly missed by his loving family. Kjell is survived by his wife Jerry; children Kjel W. (Kristy) Finnvik, Michelle L. (Kent) Biden, Aron H. Finnvik; grandchildren Brandon and Haily; his mother, Olaug Finnvik Segel; a stepdaughter, Lynn (Randy) Rowe and their children Eric and Alisha. Memorial services will be held Sunday, October 7, 2001, 1:30 pm at the 1002 South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Arrangements by Gaffney Cassedy Allen and Buckley King.

Marie (Ria) Olson
Marie, 84, passed away Sept. 30, 2001 in Tacoma, WA, after a short battle with cancer. She is survived by her son Dale Olson and wife Nancy, and grandchildren John Olson and Carolyn Brock. She will be greatly missed by family and friends. She was born on April 14, 1917 in Frankfurt, Germany. She was married to Eugene Olson in 1948. She lived in America since 1957, and in Tacoma since 1964. Marie is remembered for her servant’s heart, her love for people and for her Lord Christ. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 6th at 11 a.m. in the Chambers Creek Chapel at New Tacoma Cemetery. Viewing at 10 a.m. and following the service.

Marjorie M. Callahan
Marjorie M. Callahan, 87, died October 2, 2001 in Tacoma. She was a lifelong resident of Tacoma, attended Holy Rosary School and graduated from Aquinas Academy. She had worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. She was preceded in death by her true love of 61 years, E.J. Callahan, and grandson Kurt. She is survived by sons Michael (Lenita) Callahan, Puyallup; James Callahan, Tacoma; Steve Callahan, Tacoma; grandchildren Kevin, Kelly, Patrick, Brian; and 6-1/2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday, October 8, 2001, 10:00 a.m. at the Calvary Cloisters Chapel. Viewing will be all day Saturday, October 6, and Sunday, October 7, 2001, at the 1002 South Yakima Avenue Chapel. Interment at Calvary Cemetery. The family wishes to express their thanks to the staff at Franke Tobey Jones and to Franciscan Hospice for their tender loving care of Marjorie. Sandra Jo (Gundstrom) Brown
Sandy, 56, of University pLace, WA, passed away September 30, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. She will be greatly missed by the many lives she touched. A memorial service in celebration of Sandy’s life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 6th at Spanaway Lutheran Church, 16001 A Street, (253) 531- 7000. Hazel (Matthaei) Buchanan
Tacoma native Hazel Buchanan, 88, passed away October 4, 2001. She was born July 21, 1913 to Beulah and Servie Matthaei. Hazel is survived by daughter Barbara Fay, Sunnyvale, CA; brother Arnold Matthaei (Cay), Gig Harbor; sister Dena Parker, Tacoma; granddaughters Bradi Buchanan, Richland; daughter-in-law Marcia Buchanan, Gig Harbor. Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Owen (Buck) Buchanan Jr., son Owen (Buck) Buchanan III, brother Henry Matthaei and sister Nona Steeves. Hazel graduated from Stadium High and attended Knapp’s Business College. She was employed by Nordstrom, retiring after 20 years of employment. Hazel was a member of the Tacoma Elks. Memorial donations to Olympic Peninsula Kidney Center, 2740 Clare Ave., Bremerton, WA 98310. A special thanks to Hazel’s wonderful family at “My Grandma’s House” for their outstanding love, friendship and care. At her request, a private family services will be held.

Theodore Jack Torre
Theodore Jack Torre was born on October 8, 1912 in Tacoma, WA. He and his brother, Manuel, were born to Italian immigrants from Genoa, George and Rose Torre, who helped start Colonial Gardens Vegetable Farm in the Fife Valley. Ted went through the Tacoma schools, Franklin and Jason Lee, graduating from Stadium where he and his basketball team won the state championship in 1931. Ted always had a love for aviation. He received his pilot’s license as a civilian, going on to train Air Force pilots in WWII. Ted went to work for the then CAA (now FAA) in the airport control tower of Great Falls, Montana. He transferred to the tower at McChord AFB, then to SeaTac Airport where he received the Presidential Award for “talking in” a crippled passenger plane. Mr. Torre was instrumental in setting up the RAPCON (Radar Approach Control) operations at McChord and at Auburn. He was then sent to Honolulu where he set up the RAPCON Center in the crater of Diamond Head. He wrote the manual for its use. As supervising chief of the FAA Center in Honolulu, Ted retired. He passed away in Hawaii on September 27, 2001. Dad was intelligent, strong of character and infinitely kind. Survivors include his daughter, Lani Campbell of Tacoma; stepdaughter, Camille Thompson of Portland; 5 grandchildren, Karrie Griffin and Ted Schmitz of Tacoma; Lori Schulz and Scot and Gary Zimmerman, all of Portland; 15 great-grandchildren, who brought him much joy - Nicholas James, Tyler Philip and Natalie Torre Griffin, Jessica and Beau Schmitz are all of the Gig Harbor area. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Doris, in 1977, and his beloved grandson, Michael Aro, in 1997. A family service will be held 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 10 at Haven of Rest, Hwy 16, Gig Harbor. Memorial donations may be made to St. Francis Hospice, 860 Iwilei Road, Honolulu, HI 96817.

Elias J. Wipf “Eli”
Born October 12, 1921 in Chasley, ND to Elias E. M. and Anna Wipf; passed away October 4, 2001. Eli, a long time resident of Tacoma, ran his own business, Wipf Ornamental Iron until he retired. He served in the Navy and was a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Ray C. Roberts, Post 969. He loved to hunt and fish in his younger years. Eli is survived by daughter, Penny East; son, Gary L. Wipf; daughter- in-law, Sally Wipf; grandsons, Mark Wipf and Mike Erb; sisters, Violet Stratman, Mathilda “Tillie” Hammond, Ida Cracker and their families. Family and friends will miss him and his independent ways. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 12, 2001 at 3 PM in the Aspen Chapel, Celebration of Live Center, Mountain View Funeral Home. Fonzo B. Williams
Fonzo was born in Ellijay, GA on June 10, 1919 and passed away on Oct. 5, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. Beloved husband of 56 years to Barbara. Devoted and caring father to sons, Scott, Randy and Barney and special grandfather to Jeff, Andy, Randy, Julie, Quinn and Xander; great-granddaughter, Aleksiya; and brother to Jay and Russell. He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force from 1940 to 1970. Throughout his life he enjoyed many interests and excelled at everything he did. He was always kind and gentle. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him. May you rest peacefully in heaven - you will always be in our hearts. There will be a visitation for Fonzo on Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM at Mt. View Funeral Home. Memorial services will be held at First Baptist Church of Lakewood at noon on Wed., Oct. 10, and the burial service will be held at the Tahoma National Cemetery at 2:00 PM.

Olea Mae Donnelly
Mae, 81, passed away Oct. 5, 2001 in Lakewood, WA. She will be greatly missed by her husband of 50 years, Donald E. Donnelly, her family and friends. She was an avid bowler and devoted mother to daughter, Janice Strickland (Jay III) and son, Don (Linda). Mae was a very special grandmother to Brian, Catherine and Jay IV. She is survived by her sisters, Eileen Hawk, Elma Odegard and Roine Allred. Mae was born in Moreland, ID, raised in American Falls and resided in Lakewood. Marlene F. Messer
Marlene F. Messer died Friday, October 5, 2001 at home, surrounded by her loving family, after a long illness with emphysema. Born Marlene Frances Stewart to Frank and Lucille Stewart on May 16, 1937 in Tacoma, Washington. Marlene married her high school sweetheart, Jack Messer, on Oct. 24, 1953. They celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on Oct. 24, 1998. Marlene was preceded in death by her husband, Jack and her parents, Frank and Lucille Stewart. Marlene will be best remembered for her work as a gracious waitress, a wonderful homemaker and a loving mom and grandma. She is survived by her children, Linda Holt-Ryan (Peter Ryan), Cindy (Eric) Nelson, Mike (Kathy) Messer and Sherri (Mike) DeYoung; grandchildren, Jason Holt, Jeremy and Kevin Nelson, Jerad Messer, Nichole Holt, Kreig DeYoung, Justin Messer and Jennifer DeYoung and beloved pet, “Precious”. Memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at Piper-Morley-Mellinger Funeral Chapel, 253-472-3353.

Rose B. Hoover
Rose B. Hoover, 91, born June 24, 1910 in Tacoma, died October 5, 2001. She was the beloved wife of Melvin Lewis Hoover, Sr. and mother to Melvin Lewis Hoover, Jr. In addition to her husband and son, she is survived by: daughters- in-law, Mary Hoover and Alice Taft; 6 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren and numerous other relatives not mentioned but loved. Rose Hoover’s tender heart loved and cared for many. She always thought of others before herself and gave unselfishly to many. “She will be loved always and missed. We look forward to the day when we are reunited once again.” Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 9, 2001, 1:00 p.m. at Calvary Cemetery. Rose C. Ferderer, age 67, a longtime Tacoma resident went to be with her Lord, Wednesday, October 3, 2001. She was born September 30, 1934. She was preceded in death by 2 sons, Michael Joseph and Joe. Surviving family includes her husband, George; daughters, Pam of Fallon, Nevada; Sandy and Tina; son, Neil; stepdaughter, Elaine; stepson, Mark; 2 sisters, Elaine and Arlene, both of California; brother, Bob of Oregon; 12 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Rosie was loved by all of her family and friends. “She is now an angel in heaven.” Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 9, 2001, 1:00 PM at the Mountain View Celebration of Life Building. Visitation will be Monday (TODAY) 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM and Tuesday morning until 11:30 AM. A reception will follow the service at AMVETS, 5717 So. Tyler in Tacoma.
