Stuart E. Kowalsky, Jr.
Stuart, 53, passed away suddenly Sept. 27. He was born on July 10, 1948 to Stuart and Elizabeth (Royer) Kowalsky in Hartford, CT. Stuart became a resident of WA in 1965, when he was discharged from the Army. He married Donna and moved to Yelm in 1978. Stuart was a Plumber Foreman for the Civil Service and was later promoted to an Estimator. He was co-proprietor of Nisqually Valley Restaurant in Yelm and also had a long career as a Service Manager working for Tveten RV, Korum RV, and Puyallup Chevrolet/Subaru. Stuart was co-founder and President of Seed Faith Ministries, helping the orphans of Uganda. He was set in as an Elder at over 350 churches throughout Africa. He was also past President and Board Member of Olympia Union Gospel Mission and was involved in Prison, Youth and Street Ministries. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. Stuart’s passion was ministering over people, no problem was too great or too small. He was deeply loved and will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Donna Kowalsky, Yelm; children, Sheryl (Matt) Battle, Kennewick; Homer (Debbie) Hillis, Yelm; Patty (Brad) Neff, Kennewick; Paul (Shannon) Brown, Fort Sill, OK; Sandy Hammock, Yelm; Kristie (Mario) Rodriguez, Tacoma; and David Carlson, Yelm; grandchildren, Neil (Jamie), Jim, April, Les, Eric, Chris, Josh, Becky, Racheal, Brandy, John Dylan, Levi, Lezah, Jacob, Racheal and Joel; great-grandchildren, Maddisyn, Kaytelyn and Alazia; his mother and father, sister, Elizabeth; and brother Frenchie of Hartford, CT. Memorial services were held Oct. 2. Stuart will be laid to rest in Uganda, where his wife will continue their work. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Seed Faith Ministries.

Patricia Ann Buck
After a gallant battle against cancer, Pat passed away on Oct. 4, 2001. Born Nov. 17, 1951 of Walter and Jeanette Zachariason in Lake Park, MN. She will be remembered and greatly missed by her husband Jack, of 31 years; son Tony; daughter Tammi; family and friends. Her memory will always live in the hearts of her grandchildren, Ryan, Kaela, Catlin and Jarrod, her sister Kathy and brothers Wayne, Keith, Neil, Curt and Dale. All of the countless students and fellow employees of Bethel School District will miss her dearly. She loved to go camping, cross-stitching and enjoyed the various annual Blue’s Festivals around the Pacific Northwest. Her dedication and drive to explore and stretch the imaginations and minds of her students is commendable and she has received several awards for her achievements. This year she received the following awards: ¥ Classified Employee of the Year Bethel Chapter PSE of WA. ¥ The WA. State Sharon Christa MCauliffe Award for Excellence ¥ Public school employee of the year for WA. State ¥ Pioneer of Bethel School District PARA-Educator of Staff Developments She also served on many Bethel School District Committees. Pat has touched many lives in her short tenure of 19 years with Bethel. She will be Greatly missed and if we all achieved just a fraction of what she has accomplished, we’d all be greater people. A memorial will be held on Friday Oct. 12th 2:00 pm at Evergreen Elementary School 1311 172nd St. E. Spanaway, WA. 98387. Close friends and family are also invited to the house to celebrate Pat’s life.

Marie Florence Bolton Michels
Age 81, of Enumclaw, died October 1, 2001. She was born September 15, 1920 in Tacoma, WA. Preceded in death by her daughter, Sharon Louise Bolton in June 1942. She is survived by her husband, Dr. P.J. Michels of the home; 2 sons, Ronald L. Bolton of Buckley and James R. Bolton and wife Cheryl of Enumclaw; 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; brothers, Charles Carson and wife Margie of Santa Barbara, CA; Leo Carson and wife Althea of Redding, CA and sister, Jean Miltenburger and husband Don of Bend, OR. A memorial service will be held Sat., Oct. 13, 2001 at 1:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Enumclaw. Memorials may be made to: Cascade Care Givers, 2885 Elmont Ave., Enumclaw, WA 98022. Services directed by Weeks’ Whitmore Funeral Home.

Stella Lavinia Burki
Born October 18, 1923 in Mackay, Queensland, Australia, to Norman and Lavinia Edwards, Stella passed away peacefully at home in the arms of her children on September 29, 2001. Stella’s love of family lives on with daughter Kay (Tom); sons Roger, Alvin, Walter, Wayne (Cyndy), Lee (Cappi); 17 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren; sisters Norma and Rita of Australia. Husband Walter of 52 years, and sister Joyce precedes her in death. She shared her caring nature as a Sunday school teacher for 18 years at Life Center and as a volunteer at the Discovery Shop. An accomplished youth tennis player at home in Australia, she continued to enjoy sports, attending her children and their families’ sporting events. She could also give you the current status of the Mariners pitching staff. Mom was always there for anyone in need. Remembrances may be made to Franciscan Hospice, 1717 S. J St., Tacoma, WA 98405. Memorial services are at noon on Friday, October 12, in the Evergreen Chapel at New Tacoma Cemetery, 9212 Chambers Creek Rd. W., 253-564- 1311.

Catherine Baker Bliss
Born September 7, 1917 in Seattle, Washington. Departed on October 2, 2001 in Bellevue, Washington. She was a world traveler and a talented musician. She loved her family, her church, her friends, and her cats. She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Hewitt, her husband George, and their children, Laura, Christa and Emily; son Joel Houplin, his wife, Dy and their daughter, Joana; and great-grandson, Benjamin. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, October 17 at 7:30 PM, Bellevue Seventh Day Adventist Church, on the corner of 140th Ave NE and Main Street. Dora Jeanne Whipple
Dora Whipple passed away quietly from this life on Oct. 5, 2001. She left behind a son, Art Copeland and wife Nancy; two daughters, Jean Scott and her husband Howard and Sue Gade and her husband Bob, as well as a host of grandchildren and great- grandchildren. Besides her immediate family, she is survived by a multitude of friends, all of whom loved her and she them. She will be missed by all. Dora was predeceased by her husband, Don and a son, Michael. A special thanks goes to Bernice Christenson who was not only a very dear friend of many years, but was also a caregiver for the last years of her life. Emma Louise Morris
Emma Louise Morris, resident of Tacoma, WA for 25 years, died Oct. 3, 2001 in Tacoma, WA. She was born April 5, 1915 in Sheridan, OR to Charles Baker and Florence Ethel Schooley Baker. She graduated from the University of Oregon with a Master’s Degree and taught high school for many years. She served in the Marine Corp during WWII. She was married to Robert Lee Morris, a WWII vet, POW and survivor of the Bataan Death March in 1946. He preceded her in death in 1960. She was also preceded in death by a grandson, Robert Andrew Branham. Emma was a lifelong volunteer and social activist and was known throughout the community for her concern for others. She was helpful, caring and warm, and had many, many friends and loved ones. She is survived by children, Charles Morris, Tacoma, WA; Elaine Branham, Mt. Angel, OR; Emily Branson, GA; Janice Bomgardner, Tacoma, WA; James Ganyon, Royal, CA; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 12:10 p.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Tacoma, WA on Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001.

Gary Jon Ridout
Gary Jon Ridout (51), passed away at his home near Newport on Oct. 3rd, due to natural causes. On Aug. 16, 1950, Gary and his twin sister Shary were born to Kenneth and Edna (Duddleston) Ridout, in Enumclaw, WA. In 1968, he graduated from Mt. Tahoma High School and later attended Green River and Gray’s Harbor Colleges. Gary worked in the Tacoma Boise Cascade Mill and eventually moved to Newport, WA in 1989, where he worked as a well respected paper maker at Ponderay Newsprint in Usk, WA. Gary enjoyed his family and took special pleasure in his grandchildren. He lived baseball, football, camping, fishing, and all things outdoors. He was an excellent cook and made tasty smoked and canned fish, as well as spicy jerky. He built great fires and could do amazing things with rope and tarp when the weather was bad. Survivors include his wife, Daunita, at their home; three daughters, Heather (Pat) Sommers of Harrisville, PA; Jessica Ridout (Dwight Boots) and Tracy Higgins, all of Spokane, WA; son, Bill Higgins, also of Spokane and four grandchildren, Jamie and Darrien Sommers, Alex Boots and William Higgins. He is also survived by his mother, Edna Marsden of Tacoma, WA; four sisters, Virginia Huber and Shary (Bill) Platt, all of Tacoma; Janet Mulqueeny of Allyn, WA and Christy Ridout of Shelton, WA; a brother, Ken (Jan) Ridout of Port Angeles, WA; as well as the many people whose lives he touched during his 51 years. Gary was a wonderful and dedicated father and Papa. He is deeply loved by all who knew him and is greatly missed. A memorial service will be held from 3:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wed., Oct. 10th at 531 Gregg’s Rd., Newport. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Gary’s memory to the Special Olympics and the American Red Cross. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home, Newport, WA in charge of arrangements.
