Anna Blanche Bender, 91, of Prosser died Tuesday.

Ms. Bender was born in Dayton, Wash. She moved to Grandview in 1948 and worked as a cook for several local restaurants until retiring in 1980.

Survivors include five children, Carl Bender, Janice Blume, John Bender, Anna Murch and Gherry Bender; 10 grandchild-ren and eight great-grandchildren.

Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A private memorial service will be held with family.

Angela Lewis
Announcement dated August 02, 2009
Angela Lewis, 38, of Yakima died Friday.

Ms. Lewis was born in York, Pa.

Survivors include a daughter, Chantal Lewis of Yakima; a son, Eli Lewis of Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Brad Brown of Tampa, Fla.; and a stepdaughter, Carolyn Haberman of Yakima.

Keith and Keith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A celebration of life is being planned. It will be held at the Salvation Army church.

Sherry J. Gilliam
Announcement dated August 03, 2009
Sherry Juanita Gilliam, 54, of Moxee died July 30 at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Gilliam was born in Yakima and worked for a variety of businesses, including the Yakima Fred Meyer for the past 15 years.

She is survived by her husband, Ernest Gilliam; two sons, Michael Gilliam of Tacoma and Timothy Gilliam of Spokane; three brothers, Sidney Peterson, Theodore Peterson and James Peterson, all of Yakima; three sisters, Jeanne Peterson and Lavina Jones, both of Yakima, and Esther Norton of Selah; and four grandchildren.

The funeral is pending. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Lester A. Burckhardt

Lester A. Burckhardt, 80, of Sunnyside died Sunday in Spokane. Mr. Burckhardt was born in Merrimac, Wis., and moved to Sunnyside at age 9. He worked his whole life in the Sunnyside area, starting at Mojo's. In 1960 he started working for The Dodge Garage, then for Valley Auto Parks in 1969. He went to work for the Roza Irrigation District in 1972 as purchasing manager and retired after 25 years.

Survivors include four children, Karen Headrick of Knoxville, Tenn., Kenny Burckhardt of Fairfield, Wash., Linda Burckhardt of Spokane and Larry Burckhardt of Fremont, Calif.; a sister, Violet Zyph of Sunnyside; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home of Sunnyside. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home. Burial will be in Sunnyside Memorial Park.

Leonard F. Butler
Announcement dated August 04, 2009
Leonard Frank Butler, 72, of Yakima died Saturday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Butler was born in Ferndale, Ore., and worked for the West Valley School District, retiring in 1999.

Survivors include his wife, Carol Butler; and a son, Brian Butler, both of Yakima.

The memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Betty L. Gaudette

Betty Loraine Craig Gaudette, 75, of Yakima died Friday at home. Mrs. Gaudette was born in Embler, Ore., and moved with her family to Naches. In 1952 she moved to Yakima. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Gerald Gaudette; three sons, James Gaudette, Jack Gaudette and John Gaudette, all of Yakima; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Naches Cemetery.

William S. Gettmann Sr.

William S. Gettmann Sr., 78, of Yakima died Friday. Mr. Gettmann was born in Chicago, and served in the Air Force and Navy. He worked as a controller in the airline industry.

Survivors include his wife, Erline Gettmann of Yakima; a son, William S. Gettmann Jr. of Yakima; a daughter, Linda Hummel of Springdale, Wash.; a sister, Elaine Carpenter of Yakima; and five grandchildren.

Private family services will be held. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Mary A. Jones
Announcement dated August 04, 2009
Mary Ann Jones, 66, of Salem, Ore., formerly of Grandview and the Tri-Cities, died July 19. Mrs. Jones was born in Spokane.

Survivors include her husband, Duane Jones; her mother, Ann Winkler of Soap Lake, Wash.; a daughter, Stacey Mabrey of Elk Grove, Calif.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Graveside inurnment service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home of Sunnyside.

Allen E. Mantey
Announcement dated August 04, 2009
Allen "Al" E. Mantey, 88, of Yakima died Sunday. Mr. Mantey was born in Everett, Wash., and moved to the Yakima area in 1934. He served in the Navy Seabees during World War II. He owned and operated a heating and plumbing business until his retirement in the early 2000s.

Survivors include his wife, Evagean Mantey of Yakima; two sons, David Mantey of Yakima and Michael Mantey of Moxee; two daughters, Joan Coulson of Hot Springs Village, Ark., and Debra Schofield of North Bend, Wash.; a brother, Fred Mantey of Salinas, Calif.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Angelina Carrasco

Angelina Carrasco, infant daughter of Usiel and Analberica Carrasco of Grandview, was stillborn Saturday at Prosser Memorial Hospital.

Besides her parents, survivors include three brothers, Josh Carrasco, Uziel Carrasco Jr. and Vicente Carrasco, all of Grandview; grandparents, Angelina Ortega of Grandview and Manuel and Aurora Valle of California; and a great-grandmother, Guadalupe Valle of Mexico.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at Prosser Funeral Home. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Prosser. Concluding services and burial will follow in the Prosser Cemetery.

Ruth F. Burkhart

Ruth Frances Burkhart, 91, of Selah died Sunday. Mrs. Burkhart was born in Plymouth, Pa., and worked at Ross Packing for 40 years and retired from Tree Top.

Survivors include a daughter, Irene Noy of Selah; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Susan M. Anderson

Susan Marie Anderson, 52, of Selah died Monday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Ms. Anderson was born in Devils Lake, N.D. She worked as a caregiver.

Survivors include her mother, Betty Marie Anderson of Selah; three brothers, Darrell Anderson of Tacoma, David Anderson of Covington, Wash., and Charles Anderson of Oak Harbor, Wash.; and three sisters, Mary Ann Caywood of Lynnwood, Wash., Cynthia Liccardo of Seattle and Linda Lea of Selah.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Tahoma Cemetery. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Michael W. Bogart

Michael W. Bogart, 48, of Yakima died Monday at home. Mr. Bogart was born in Toppenish. He was a business owner.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Bogart of Yakima; three sons, Cammon Bogart of Fort Campbell, Ky., Beau Bogart and Michael Bogart, both of Yakima; a sister, Tina Bogart of Yakima; and a brother, Steve Bogart of Yakima.

Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

James F. Woods

James F. Woods, 66, of Yakima died Monday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center. Mr. Woods was born in Yakima and served in the Marines. He worked for Dale's Truck Lines, Easley Trucking, Wood's Body Shop and was a boilermaker at Hanford.

Survivors include five sons, Vernon "Woody" Woods, Ron Woods, Gerald Woods, Michael Woods and Norman Woods, all of Yakima; a sister, Cathy Huck of Portland; a brother, Robert Woods of North Carolina; and 12 grandchildren.

A graveside inurnment will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 15 in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Michael R. Bertsch

Michael R. Bertsch, 73, of Grandview died Monday. Mr. Bertsch was born in Devils Lake, N.D., and served in the Air Force. In 1966, he and his wife opened MB Upholstery in Grandview.

Survivors include his wife, Stella M. Bertsch of Grandview; six children, Michael Bertsch of Joshua Tree, Calif., Tony Bertsch of Sunnyside, Robert Bertsch of Lakebay, Wash., Teresa Harder of Cheney, Wash., Jeff Bertsch of Grandview and Joe Bertsch of Burbank, Wash.; a sister, Audrey Davis of Chehalis, Wash.; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

A rosary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday at Smith Funeral Home in Grandview. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grandview. Burial will follow in the Grandview Cemetery.

Laurence D. Sizer

Laurence Dale Sizer, 66, of Granger died Monday at Sunnyside Community Hospital. Mr. Sizer was born in Granger, where he farmed for more than 50 years.

Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Sizer of Granger; two sons, Daniel Sizer of Arlington, Wash., and Donald Sizer of Spokane; four daughters, Rosemary Puyear, Darlene Sizer and Laura Delegard, all of Spokane, and Sharon DuFord of Zillah; and 10 grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Zillah Nazarene Church. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home of Zillah.

Claudio Estrada
Announcement dated August 06, 2009
Claudio Estrada, 86, of Pasco died Tuesday at the Tri-Cities Chaplaincy Hospice House. Mr. Estrada was born in Michoacan, Mexico.

Survivors include five sons, Manuel Estrada, Francisco Estrada, Ricardo Estrada, Jesus Estrada and Adam Estrada, all of Pasco; five daughters, Maria Estrada of Yakima, Ofelia Estrada of Salinas, Calif., and Celia Estrada, Raquel Estrada and Eva Estrada, all of Pasco; 59 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7:30 p.m. today at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday, also at Keith and Keith, with burial follow in Tahoma Cemetery.

Eugene T. Starwich

Eugene T. (Tom) Starwich, 64, of Yakima died Monday. Mr. Starwich was born in Yakima. He worked as chief mate in the maritime industry.

Survivors include his wife, Marla Starwich of Yakima; a son, Matthew Starwich of Yakima; two daughters, Leila Starwich of Edmonds, Wash., and Yasmin Starwich of Spokane; two brothers, Mark Starwich of Stanwood, Wash., and Gary Starwich of Seattle; and three sisters, Dolores Hanses of Yakima, Marlene Schickling of Seattle and Joann Beck of Minnesota.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Church of Christ in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Homer L. Haldeman
Announcement dated August 07, 2009
Homer L. Haldeman, 88, of Milwaukie, Ore., died Monday.

Mr. Haldeman was born in Spokane and served in the Army. He lived in Greenacres, Wash., Millwood, Wash., Seattle and finally Toppenish in 1965. He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked on the Pacific Crest Trail near Leavenworth. He was later a USDA meat grader for several meat packing companies until retiring in 1987.

Survivors include four children, Carol Kerby of Burns, Ore., Dan Haldeman of Bend, Ore., Bob Haldeman of West Linn, Ore., and Betty Haldeman of Seattle; a sister, Holly Womack of Tucson, Ariz.; and six grandsons.

Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Cremation and inurnment will be in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Antonio Mares Jr.

Antonio Mares Jr., 50, of Toppenish died Monday in Yakima. Mr. Mares was born in Toppenish. He worked at Legends Casino and at Washington Beef for the past four years.

Survivors include his mother, Rosalin Smith of Harrah; his father, Antonio Mares Sr. of Hood River, Ore.; a son, Owens J. Mares; a daughter, Natasha Mares, both of Warm Springs, Ore.; five sisters, Emilia Mares of Auburn, Wash., Lorraine Mares of Hermiston, Ore., Elizabeth Mares of Wapato; Virginia Mares of Hood River, and Shirley Mares of New Mexico; and two grandchildren.

Dressing services will be at 10 a.m. today at the Toppenish Longhouse. A sunrise service will be Saturday in the Yesmowit Cemetery in White Swan. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah.

George Rogers, 89, of Grandview died Wednesday at Hillcrest Manor in Sunnyside. Mr. Rogers was born in Outlook and served in the military. He was a farmer and a mint broker.

Survivors include his wife, Wanda Rogers of Grandview; a daughter, Linda Jett of Newberg, Ore.; a son, Stanley Rogers of Wichita, Kan.; a sister, Helen Amundsen of Sunnyside; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. A private burial will be Wednesday in Lower Valley Memorial Gardens. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Aug. 22 at the First Baptist Church in Sunnyside.
