Lillie M. Banks, 87, of Toppenish died Friday in Yakima.

She was born in Poplar Bluff, Mo., and moved to the Yakima Valley in the 1950s, where she worked at Stokleys. She later worked as a floor lady at Scarletts warehouse in Buena, and was a caregiver for many years.

Survivors include five sons, Jerry Collins of Oakridge, Ore., Jim Collins of Sacramento, Calif., Benny Collins of Las Vegas, Larry Collins of Selah and Randy Collins of Zillah; three daughters, Shirley Windsor of Yakima and Susan Brestar and Sherrie Bushman, both of Toppenish; a brother, Bob Armstrong of Oakridge; 25 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday at Colonial Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with interment to follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Leland K. Serl
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
Leland K. Serl, 68, of Sunnyside died Tuesday in Yakima.

Mr. Serl was born in Chehalis, Wash., and was educated in White Swan. He served in the Marine Corps and later moved to Toppenish, where he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. He later worked as a welder for the Hanford project for 26 years.

Survivors include six children, Jeffrey, Kelly, Jennifer, Joy, Jeffery Purdy and Leland Jr.; his mother, Mabel Serl; five brothers, Bob Serl, John Serl, Glen Serl, Wray Serl Jr. and Lawrence Serl; a sister, Linda Hebert; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

No formal services are planned. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home.

Ronald J. Lahaie
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
Ronald James Lahaie, 64, of Ellensburg died Thursday in Ellensburg. He was born in Spokane and worked in the agricultural industry.

Survivors include his wife, Laura Lahaie of Ellensburg; four sons, Russell Lahaie and Eric Hall, both of Ellensburg, Ryan Lahaie of Baker City, Ore., and Ronald Lahaie Jr. of New Plymouth, Idaho; three daughters, Tammie Silva of Santa Clarita, Calif., Kelly Gates of Puyallup, Wash., and Melissa Perry of Williamstown, Mass; a brother, Albert Lahaie of Orofino, Idaho; five sisters, Paula McCully of Portland, Susan Truesdale and Charlene Lahaie of Warrenton, Ore., Sherri Garrett of Lacrosse, Wis., and Cindy Berge of Cross Plains, Wis.; and 14 grandchildren.

No services are planned. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home.

Elizabeth M. Stapleton-Marsh

Elizabeth M. Stapleton-Marsh, 88, of Kent, Wash., died Aug. 13 in Federal Way, Wash.

She was born in Lincoln, Neb., and lived in Yakima until 1960. She owned and operated the Silver Sails Tavern and Restaurant on Pier 59 in Seattle with her first husband.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Marsh of Kent; a daughter, Katherine Bogert of Huntington, Ind.; one granddaughter and three great-granddaughters.

Graveside inurnment services were held at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. Arrangements were by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

James R. Armitage
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
James Ralph Armitage, 61, of Yakima died Monday in Yakima. He was born in Yakima. He worked as an auto mechanic.

Survivors include a sister, Carol Lovegren of Edmonds, Wash.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Keith & Keith Funeral Home.

Ryon S. Hood
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
Ryon S. Hood, 61, of Yakima died Thursday in Yakima.

He was born in Minneapolis and spent much of his life in Australia and Yakima. He worked as a human resources consultant writing grants, he taught at Heritage University, and most recently worked as executive director for Lower Valley Crisis and Support Services.

Survivors include his wife, Gwyneth Hood of Yakima; two sons, Scott Hood of Perth, Australia, and Gareth Hood of Portland; three brothers, Connie Hood of Anacortes, Wash., Raleigh Hood of Cambridge, Md., and Vincent Hood of Yakima; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. Arrangements are by Keith & Keith Funeral Home.

Laura T. Harmon
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
Laura Tina Harmon, 58, of Yakima died Thursday in Yakima. She was born in Yakima and worked in fruit warehouses and in food services at Ponderosa Nursing Home.

Survivors include her husband, Herb Harmon of Yakima; a daughter, Chantel Harmon of Kew Gardens, N.Y.; two brothers, Gilbert Patterson and Joey Patterson, both of Wapato; and a sister, Jennifer Hancock of Yakima.

Private family services will be held. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory in Yakima.

John L. Seegert
Announcement dated August 23, 2009
John L. Seegert, 67, of Sunnyside died Tuesday in Sunnyside. He was born in Yakima. He served in the Coast Guard before working as a truck driver for Coca-Cola in Yakima for several years.

Survivors include a sister, Carol Kocher of Bellevue, Wash.

The funeral will be at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Tahoma Cemetery in Yakima. Arrangements are by Keith & Keith Funeral Home.

Alice N. Miller
Announcement dated August 24, 2009
Alice Neasham Miller, 96, died Thursday in Richland. Mrs. Miller was born in Iowa and lived in Grandview, where her family owned an apple orchard.

Survivors include a son, Thomas, a daughter, Donna Miller, 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Memorial plans are pending. Smith Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Donations may be sent to Prosser Hospice.

Elizabeth M. Stapleton Marsh
Announcement dated August 24, 2009
Elizabeth M. Stapleton Marsh, 88, died Aug. 13 in Lincoln, Neb. Mrs. Marsh lived in Yakima until 1960 and owned a restaurant in Seattle.

Survivors include her husband, Ken Marsh of Kent., Wash., a daughter, Katherine Bogert of Huntington, Ind., and three granddaughters.

Peggy J. Penwell

Peggy June Penwell, 76, died Saturday in Grandview. Mrs. Penwell was born in Toppenish and later moved to Grandview.

Survivors include her husband, Danny of Grandview, four sons Rick of Poulsbo, Wash., Bill of Prosser, Daniel of Kennewick and Doug of Grandview, seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Smith Funeral Home in Grandview.

Doris I. Allen
Announcement dated August 25, 2009
Doris Irene Allen, 78, of Yakima died Saturday. Mrs. Allen was born in New Sharon, Iowa. She worked for Blue Ribbon Growers for several years and Arcade Credit Service. In 1967 she opened Precision Auto in Yakima with her husband and in 1984 expanded it into Import Auto Parts Center, where she was the bookkeeper until her retirement.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald Allen of Yakima; three sons, Robert Crawford, Jack Crawford and Wayne Crawford, all of Yakima; a daughter, Linda Pruitt of Yakima; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Yakima. Service will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, also at Valley Hills Funeral Home. Burial will be in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

James R. Gleason

James Robert Gleason, 69, of Yakima died Saturday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Gleason was born in Milwaukee, Wis., and served in the Army. He had been a resident of Yakima since 1976 and worked as a truck driver for 45 years.

Survivors include five sons, James A. Gleason, John Gleason and Jared Gleason, all of Yakima, Jeff Gleason of Union Gap and Jay Gleason of Mercer Island, Wash.; two daughters, Jill Armstrong of Yakima and Jamie Record of Phoenix; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.

Emma I. Prather
Announcement dated August 25, 2009
Emma I. Prather, 74, of Yakima died Saturday at home. Mrs. Prather was born in Nashville, Ga., and lived in Tampa, Fla., and Alaska before moving to Yakima in 1976. She worked as head dietitian and cook at Tampa General Hospital and Hillsborough County Hospital in Florida.

Survivors include her husband, Robert Prather of Yakima; 10 children, Roy Morgan, Stuart Morgan, Sarah Vanerndonk, Wanda Quesnell, Lashane Prather and Christina Cunningham, all of Yakima, Debbie Worthington of Caldwell, Idaho, Gilbert Lunden of Walla Walla, Jammie Nelson of Selah and Duane Short of Spokane; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Viewing will begin at 1 p.m. today at the family home. Graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Friday in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Those wishing to attend should meet at the cemetery. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Curtis A. Brittingham

Curtis Albert Brittingham, 84, of Yakima died Saturday at Summitview Healthcare. Mr. Brittingham was born in Prescott, Kan., and served in the Army. He was a ranch foreman most of his working life.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Brittingham of Yakima; three children, Dan Brittingham of Wenatchee, Karen Stevenson of Poulsbo, Wash., and Debra Gray of Yakima; a brother, William Brittingham of Yakima; and a sister, Carla Brittingham of Selah.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. Burial will follow in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Frieda Bender
Announcement dated August 25, 2009
Frieda Bender, 89, of Yakima died Saturday at Crescent Care Center. Mrs. Bender was born in Venturia, N.D., and moved to Yakima in 1945. She and her husband owned rental property and owned and operated Rainbow Service Station on East Nob Hill Boulevard.

Survivors include a son, Bruce Bender of Yakima; a daughter, Shiela Bender of Kansas City, Mo.; one grandchild and six great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors. Graveside service will follow at noon Thursday in West Hills Memorial Park.

Ralph Conner
Announcement dated August 26, 2009
Ralph Conner, 77, of Wapato died Saturday in Yakima. Mr. Conner was born in Wappapello, Mo. He lived in Toppenish for many years and worked on area farms.

Survivors include two sons, Ralph Conner of Yakima and David Conner of Zillah; four brothers and three sisters.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Friday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. A graveside funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in the Zillah Cemetery.

Ed Cristler
Announcement dated August 26, 2009
Ed Cristler, 71, of Prosser died Saturday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Cristler was born in Ronan, Mont., and served with the Naval Reserve for eight years. He worked for the highway department the first two winters after being discharged from the service and then White Pass Ski Lodge. In 1977 he moved to Prosser and went to work for Benton Rural Electric, retiring in 1997.

Survivors include his wife, Margie.

Viewing will be from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Friday at Keith and Keith Terrace Heights Chapel. A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Ben F. George
Announcement dated August 26, 2009
Ben F. George, 85, of Thorp died Monday at Kittitas Valley Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mr. George was born in Ellensburg and devoted his life to farming and cattle ranching.

Survivors include his wife, Nina George of Thorp; one daughter, Greta Stewart of Ellensburg; two sons, Craig George of Thorp and Steve George of Moxee; three brothers, Phil George of Cheney, Wash., Keith George of Reston, Va., and Willard George of Bothell, Wash.; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for early September, with details to be announced. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Care.

Dixie L. Klang
Announcement dated August 26, 2009
Dixie Lee Klang, 63, of Yakima died Sunday. Ms. Klang was born in Yakima and worked as a nurses' aide.

Survivors include a son, James Joseph Baehm, and a daughter, Corinna Baehm-Noble, both of Anchorage, Alaska; a sister, Kay George of Selah; a brother Don Klang of Yakima; nine grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

At her request there will be no services. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Darla J. Wetherell

Darla Jean Wetherell, 67, of Yakima died Sunday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Wetherell was born in Blackwell, Okla., and lived the majority of her life in the Yakima Valley.

Survivors include her husband, Robert M. Wetherell of Yakima; eight children, Pam Tilley, Steve Chandler and Linda Kauer of Yakima, Frank A. Chandler of Zillah, Cheryl Schmale of Boring, Ore., Kimberly Prince and Kevin Muster of Tacoma and Mike Brenna of North Dakota; her mother, Ruth J. Butler of Grandview; two brothers, George Butler of Grandview and Bert D. Butler of Yakima; two sisters, Lottie Abrams of Pontiac, Ill., and Linda Flett of Sunnyside; 14 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, also at Keith and Keith. Burial will follow in West Hills Memorial Park.

Victor I. Chong
Announcement dated August 26, 2009
Victor I. Chong, 63, of Toppenish died Monday in Yakima. Mr. Chong was born and raised in Yakima. He worked at many fruit warehouses in the Valley as a machinist. He also worked for Yakama Nation Headstart and Legends Casino.

Survivors include a daughter, Rennie of Texas; a brother, Preston Bell Jr. of Toppenish; five sisters, Joanie Karlick of Eureka, Calif., Marcie John of Toppenish, Yvonne Dahrens of Portland, Angela Wynne and Linda Pratt, both of Toppenish.

The funeral will be at 8 a.m. Thursday at the Toppenish Community Center. Interment will follow in the Simpson Cemetery in White Swan. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home.
