Eugene Phillips, 80, of Grandview died Aug. 31 in Grandview.

Born in Jewell County, Kansas, Mr. Phillips served in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1956.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Grandview; a stepbrother, Lee; and five stepsisters, Bonnie, Juanita, Fern, Ruth and Frances.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Church of Christ in Grandview. Smith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eva W. Cole

Eva W. Cole, 86, of Yakima died Friday.

Born in Avery, Mo., Mrs. Cole was a homemaker in Yakima and also worked in a fruit warehouse.

Survivors include a daughter, Judith Brunk of Yakima; a brother, Gilbert Watters of Copan, Okla.; three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home in Yakima. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at West Hills Memorial Park in Yakima.

Robert Haffey

Robert "Hap" Haffey, 79, died Friday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. The Burien, Wash., native was a salesman for McKesson Pharmaceuticals.

Survivors include three daughters, Kathy Galvin of Tacoma, Karlyne Lambert of Bellingham, Wash., and Jill of Moses Lake, Wash.; a son, Jeff Haffey of California; a sister, Helen Wilcox of Auburn, Wash.; and two grandchildren.

Private memorial services will be in Seattle. Keith and Keith Funeral home is handling arrangements.

Steve J. Baldonado

Steven Joe Baldonado, 43, of Grandview died Friday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center. Mr. Baldonado was born and raised in Albuquerque, N.M. He lived in Grandview for nine years and was a masonry contractor.

Survivors include five children, Steven, David, Jacob, Angel and Emily Baldonado, all of Grandview; his mother, Virginia Serrano of Albuquerque; a brother, Richard Baldonado of Albuquerque; and his companion, Kelly Romero.

A memorial service and inurnment will be in Albuquerque. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Care of Ellensburg.

Harold E. Lake

Harold Eugene Lake, 59, of Yakima died Thursday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Lake was born in Massachusetts and moved to the Yakima area in the early 1980s.

He worked in Massachusetts, Alaska and Washington as an orderly in VA hospitals, as a chef and laborer at Western RV, and as a fisherman and orderly at Selah School.

Survivors include three sons, Peter Lake, James Lake and John Lake, whose towns of residence are unknown.

A pending memorial service will be held for friends. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Thelma G. Shook

Thelma Grace Shook, 91, of Burien, Wash., died Sept. 1 at Green Grove Adult Group Home. Mrs. Shook was born in Cashmere, Wash., and lived in Yakima off and on from 1940 to 1996. She also lived in Arizona, Selah and Burien. She was employed with Boeing for 28 years, retiring in 1970.

Survivors include two daughters, Gayle Durand of Yakima and Marilyn Reeves of Salem, Ore.; a son, Buzz E. Shook of Yakima; a sister, Shirley Fraley of Albany, Ore.; a brother, Randel Wayburn of Pensacola, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 2:30 p.m. today in the Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Wash. Arrangements are by Bonney Watson Funeral Home of Burien.

Faye I. Smith

Faye I. Smith, 95, of Yakima died Friday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Smith was born and raised in Wenatchee. She farmed a successful fruit ranch in the Malaga area with her husband.

Survivors include a daughter, Judi Loveland of Yakima; a son, Charles V. Smith of Wenatchee; four grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.

A private family service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory in Yakima.

Darrell G. Zumwalt

Darrell Gene Zumwalt, 66, of Yakima died Saturday in Union Gap. Mr. Zumwalt was born in Yakima. He was a sexton for various cemeteries in the Yakima Valley.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Zumwalt of Yakima; four sons, John Zumwalt and Darrell Zumwalt II, both of Yakima, Paul Zumwalt of Selah and Frank Zumwalt of Moxee; a daughter, Barbara Zumwalt of Yakima; a brother, Wesley Zumwalt of Post Falls, Idaho; two sisters, Lila Saldana of Yakima and Joyce Corley of Skiatook, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Maura H. Anson

Maura H. Anson, 90, of Yakima died Sunday. Mrs. Anson was born in Parnell, Mo.

Survivors include six children, Anna Marie Sevigny of Kenmore, Wash., Bob Anson, Jim Anson, Rita DeBord and Kevin Anson, all of Yakima, and Bernie Anson of Moxee; a sister, Sister Mary Carmelita FSM; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

A vigil service will be at 5 p.m. Friday at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. A memorial Mass will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday in Holy Family Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow in Calvary Cemetery.

Dorothy A. Carlson

Dorothy Adell Carlson, 60, of Yakima died Monday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Carlson was born in Olethe, Kan., and moved from Phoenix to Yakima in 1985. She worked in several different occupations, mostly waitressing and cleaning homes.

Survivors include two sons, David Ellenberger and Michael DeGraff, both of Yakima; and six grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the home of her son, David. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

James F. Frisque

James Frederick "Bud" Frisque, 103, of Yakima died Saturday at home. Mr. Frisque was born in Green Bay, Wis., and served in the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was successful in several different occupations, including retail sales, farming, a dry cleaning business, real estate sales and restaurant work.

Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews.

At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Maria G. Guzman

Maria Guillermina Guzman, 84, of Toppenish died Monday. Mrs. Guzman was born in Uruapan, Mexico, and moved to the United States in 1928. She had lived in the Valley since 1949.

Survivors include two sons, Jose Gumecindo Guzman Jr. and Enrique Guzman of Wapato; four daughters, Carmen Mancilla and Guillermina Vijarro, both of Toppenish, Rose Elia Fraga of Grandview and Isabel Jaime of Wapato; two brothers, Alfredo Vargas of Wapato and Salvador Vargas Jr., both of Arizona; a sister, Emma Gamboa of Wapato; 39 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, with a recitation of the rosary at 6 p.m., at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Resurrection Catholic Church in Zillah. Burial will follow in the Zillah Cemetery.

Robert F. Grimshaw

Robert F. Grimshaw, 88, of Naches died Sunday at Good Samaritan Health Care Center. Mr. Grimshaw was born in Goble, Ore.

Survivors include his wife, Ila M. Grimshaw of Yakima; a son, Dean Grimshaw of Naches; a daughter, Vicki Jo Grimshaw of Naches; a brother, Don Grimshaw; a sister, Jesse Blair; seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in West Hills Memorial Park. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Catherine A. Holden

Catherine A. Holden, 75, of Zillah died Tuesday. Mrs. Holden was born in Olathe, Colo., and lived in Zillah for many years. She worked at Inland Fruit.

Survivors include three sons, Earl Holden of Zillah, David Holden of Milton-Freewater, Ore., and William Holden of Yakima; three daughters, Cathy Dressel of Goldendale, Cindy Johnson of Terrace Heights and Cheri Durfey of Union Gap; a brother, Henry Abelhanz of Rathdrum, Idaho; two sisters, Barbara Engle of Lewistown, Mont., and June Crookston of Renton, Wash.; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Faith Community Church in Zillah. Interment will follow in the Zillah Cemetery.

Russel A. Gould

Russel A. Gould, 83, of Richland died Wednesday at Kadlec Medical Center. Mr. Gould was born in Broadland, S.D. He worked for SVID in Sunnyside for many years before retiring and moving to Richland.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Gould of Richland; a son, Michael Burnside of Pasco; two daughters, Peggy Jansen of Mesa, Wash., and Susan Breshears of Portland; two brothers, Clayton Gould of Sunnyside and Delbert Gould of Portland; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today in the Chapel of Valley Hills Funeral Home in Sunnyside. A graveside funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens, Sunnyside.

James O. Knight

James Owen Knight, 71, of Yakima died Tuesday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Knight was born in Ralston, Okla., and was a lifelong resident of the Yakima area. He worked at Yakima Valley School in the maintenance department.

Survivors include a son, James Knight of Las Vegas; four sisters, Joyce Simmons of Selah, Anita DeLong and Donna Zaragoza of Yakima and Carol Nacht of Tumwater, Wash.; and one grandchild.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at Shaw and Sons. Concluding burial will be in Terrace Heights Memorial Park.

Sarah L. Kroll

Sarah Louise Kroll, 90, of Moxee died Sunday in Yakima. Mrs. Kroll was born in Loomis, Wash.

Survivors include a daughter, Diane Gillan of Moxee; and two sisters, Ruby Hrusa and Claudia Roffler, both of Spokane.

A celebration of life will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Daniel Logie Sr.

Daniel Logie Sr., 74, of White Swan died Thursday at home.

Mr. Logie was born in Toppenish and served in the Marines. He worked as a commercial fisherman for 30 years in Alaska and retired as a bus driver for the Yakama Nation Tribal School.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly of White Swan; six daughters, Monica Teo of Toppenish, Carrie Teo of Wapato, Michelle Teo, Carmen Teo and Marietta Smartlowit, all of White Swan, and Teaira Venegas of Yakima; six sons, Stanley Teo, Delbert Wheeler, Richard Finley and Greg Olney, all of White Swan, Joe Logie of Toppenish and Fred Logie of Wapato; three sisters, Mina Azure of Tacoma, Tucelia James of Wapato and Susie Sutterlict of White Swan; 53 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home. The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the McKinley Indian Mission Church.

Richard J. Moser

Richard James Moser, 70, of Selah died Wednesday.

Mr. Moser was born in Yakima. He was a sheet metal worker.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Moser of Selah; two stepsons, Michael Hyslop of Orange, Calif., and Mark Hyslop of Cle Elum; two daughters, Tonya Bankhead of Covington, Wash., and Joanie Sparks of Western Washington; a stepdaughter, Maria Elliott of Selah; six brothers, Joe Moser and Jerry Moser of Idaho, Steve Moser, Kenny Moser and Fred Moser of Renton, Wash., and Tom Moser of Kent, Wash.; two sisters, Rosie of Idaho and Chris of Kent; and five grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Mary Massingill

Mary Massingill, 88, of Sunnyside died Wednesday.

Mrs. Massingill was born in Sunnyside. She and her husband first made their home in Benton City, where they farmed, and they moved to Sunnyside in 1970.

Survivors include four daughters, Bernice Rhodes of Woodland, Wash., Billie Straub of Brookfield, Mo., Jackie Jones of Billings, Mont., and Mary Haun of Benton City; a son, Rex Massingill of Fairbanks, Alaska; three sisters, Jean Maddy, Madie Worthy and Martha Upton, all of Hugo, Okla.; a brother, George Searles of Henderson, Nev.; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Evergreen Cemetery in Benton City. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home.

Shirley J. Paxton

Shirley Jean Paxton, 81, of Yakima died Tuesday.

Mrs. Paxton was born in Phoenix and moved to the Yakima area in 1971. She worked as an accountant in retail and various other occupations until her retirement in the mid- 1980s.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirlene Smith and Susan Shewmaker, both of Yakima; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.
