Olive E. Durkee, 95, died Thursday at Riverview Manor in Selah. The native of Broadview, Mont., served in the Army Nurse Corps and worked as a registered nurse at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Yakima for more than 20 years.

Survivors include a son, John Durkee; a daughter, Marilyn McLean; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Tree of Life Lutheran Church in Terrace Heights. Arrangements by Keith & Keith Funeral Home.

Wilbur J. Matheny

Wilbur James Matheny, 72, died Friday in Grandview, where he lived. The Yakima native served in the Air Force and worked as an air traffic controller for the Federal Aviation Administration. He also loved working in flea markets.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth Matheny of Grandview; seven children Jerry Matheny of Alexandria, Va., April Price of Culver, Ore., Theresa Ross of Sunnyside, Janet Abbasi of Bossier City, La., Doug Matheny, Terry Matheny and Devin Matheny, all of Grandview; a sister, Carol Hosman of Washougal, Wash.; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

At Mr. Matheny's request, there will be no formal services, but a special service is planned for a later date. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory.

Charles A. de La Chapelle Sr.

Charles Antoine de La Chapelle Sr., 87, of Yakima died Sunday. Mr. de La Chapelle was born in Chicago and served in the Navy during World War II. He moved to the Yakima area in 1949. He worked as a farm owner/operator until his retirement in 2007.

Survivors include his wife, Carol-Anne de la Chapelle; a son, Charles A. de La Chapelle, Jr., both of Yakima; four daughters, Catherine Allan of Medina, Wash., Renee Hough and Joanna Cable of Spokane and Jacqueline Hannsman of San Francisco; two sisters, Zo Lord of Carmel, Calif., and Renee Perna of Madison, Wis.; and nine grandchildren.

Memorial Mass is pending. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Suzanne T. Compton

Suzanne Teresa Compton, 72, of Yakima died Friday at Willow Springs Care. Mrs. Compton was born in Schenectady, N.Y. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred Compton; a son, David Wayne Morris, both of Yakima; two daughters, Laurie Oliver of Beaverton, Ore., and Donna Sue Haller-Stor of Colville, Wash.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

At her request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Harold E. LaForge
Announcement dated February 09, 2010
Harold E. LaForge, 86, of Wapato died Friday at Parkside Nursing Care Center in Union Gap. Mr. LaForge was born in Sand Creek, Wis., and served in the Army during World War II. He moved to Aurora, Ore., in 1960 and worked as a welder in the shipyards. In 1970 he moved to the Wapato area to raise cattle and farm.

Survivors include his wife, Betty LaForge of Wapato; three sons, Rick LaForge of Union Gap, and Jim LaForge and Roy LaForge, both of Wapato; two daughters, Susan Allred and Edna Tilton, both of Harrah; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services are pending for Friday. Arrangements are by Merritt Funeral Home.

Carmen P. Keene

Carmen Patricia Keene, 68, of Toppenish died Monday. Mrs. Keene was born in Winnemucca, Nev., and moved to Toppenish in 1966. She worked for the Toppenish School District as a para-pro for 27 years, retiring in 2005.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd of Toppenish; two daughters, Nichole Baker of Bothell, Wash., and Tricia Dillard of Cle Elum; a brother, John Leech of Eldorado Hills, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

A memorial serviceswill be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home.

Jennie Klarenbeek

Jennie Klarenbeek, 88, of Prosser died Saturday. Mrs. Klarenbeek was born in Sioux County, Iowa, and moved to Washington state in 1955. She lived in Sunnyside, Mabton and Grandview before moving to Prosser. She worked on the family farm and several years at Prosser Pack.

Survivors include five children, Cora Goodno of Anchor Point, Alaska, Jolene Holmes of Roy, Wash., Hester Harding of Port Ludlow, Wash., June McNair of Prosser and Pamela Birchard of Great Falls, Mont.; 19 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home LTD and Crematory.

Earl V. Spino
Announcement dated February 10, 2010
Earl Victor Spino, 31, of Pendleton, Ore., died Saturday at Oregon Health Sciences University Hospital in Portland as the result of injuries sustained in an accident. Mr. Spino was born in Toppenish. He was an enrolled member of the Yakama Nation.

Dressing services were held Tuesday. Sunrise Washat Services will begin at 7 a.m. today, followed by burial in the Old Agency Cemetery, Spino Edition. Arrangements are by Burns Mortuary of Pendleton.

Thelma Smith
Announcement dated February 10, 2010
Thelma Smith, 94, of Yakima died Tuesday. Mrs. Smith was born in Tillamook, Ore. She lived in Zillah for many years.

Survivors include her husband, Charles L. Smith of Yakima; two daughters, Jan Sweezea of Zillah and Tootie Allen of Bend, Ore.; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday, also at the funeral home.

Alberto Villanueva Gutierrez

Alberto Villanueva Gutierrez, 94, of Yakima died Sunday at home. Mr. Gutierrez was born in Michoacán, Mexico. He was a resident of the Yakima Valley for many years and worked as a farm laborer.

Survivors include his wife, Margarita Gutierrez of Yakima; 11 children, Roberto Gutierrez and Audel Gutierrez of Colima, Mexico, Lorenzo Gutierrez, Miguel Gutierrez, Manuel Gutierrez, Francisca Amezcua, Maria Zepeda, Jose Gutierrez and Maria De Jesus Gutierrez, all of Yakima, Aurora Gutierrez of California and Trinidad Gutierrez of Moxee; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

Viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Templo La Hermosa, 709 Fair Ave., Yakima.

Samuel G. Barela

Samuel George Barela, 60, of Yakima died Tuesday at home. Mr. Barela was born in Greeley, Colo.

Survivors include his mother, Eva Morehead Barela of Yakima; four children, Kalei Joseph Barela of California, Kaliko Crystal Barela of Hilo, Hawaii, Kanoe Singlee Lee-Barela, and Kealii Patrick Lee-Barela of Yakima; 13 brothers and sisters, and seven grandchildren.

Service information is pending. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

John Rooney
Announcement dated February 11, 2010
John "Jack" Rooney, 90, of Yakima died Monday. Mr. Rooney was born in Yakima and served as an airplane mechanic in the Army and Air Force in Italy and Dutch Harbor, Alaska. He worked at Weyerhaeuser for more than 20 years.

Survivors include three nieces, Kathleen Wagner, Ellen Pennock and Carol Wilson; and a nephew, Loren Pennock.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Cathedral in Yakima. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, with military honors. Arrangements are by Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.

Randal J. Marshal Montgomery Sr.
Announcement dated February 11, 2010
Randal James Marshal Montgomery Sr. 41, of Zillah died Feb. 4. Mr. Montgomery was born in Toppenish. He worked in construction as a laborer.

Survivors include two sons, Lester Allen Montgomery and Randal James Montgomery Jr.; his father and mother, Lester Montgomery and Judith Montgomery, all of Zillah; three sisters, Jeannie Bradley of Goldendale, Joni Bishop of Yakima and Annie Berner of Zillah; a grandfather, James Albaugh of Benson, Ariz.; and great-grandmother, Mary Albaugh of New Salem, N.D.

Private graveside services will be held in the Zillah Cemetery. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home of Zillah.

Catherine Smith

Catherine Smith, 88, of Yakima died Feb. 4. Mrs. Smith was born in Juliaetta, Idaho, and moved to Sunnyside at an early age. She worked at Haskins Variety Store and later as an Avon lady.

Survivors include two daughters, Dee Alder and Judy DeZarn; three sisters, Barbara Clark, Hazel Scott and MaryLou Anderson; two brothers, Don and Bill Green; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at Sunnyside United Methodist. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home.

John L. Umtuch
Announcement dated February 11, 2010
John L. Umtuch, 60, of White Swan died Wednesday in Yakima. Mr. Umtuch was born in Toppenish. He worked for the Yakama Nation and Bureau of Indian Affairs forestry division for many years. He most recently worked as a card dealer at Legends Casino.

Survivors include four sisters, Lorintha Umtuch, Louisa Umtuch and Patricia Ike, all of Toppenish, and Julie Salguiero of Brownstown.

Dressing services will be at 1 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home. Overnight services will take place at the Toppenish Creek Longhouse with the funeral at sunrise on Friday. Interment will follow in the Yesmowit Cemetery.

Donice Chappell
Announcement dated February 12, 2010
Donice Chappell, 88, of Yakima died Tuesday at home. Mr. Chappell was born in Fulsom, La., and served in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a Yakima resident for 60 years and retired as a lumber grader for Boise Cascade.

Survivors include his wife, Lillie B. Chappell of Yakima; two sons, Donice Chappell Jr., of Pasco and Donniel Chappell of Yakima; six daughters, Doris Andrews of Spokane, Darlene Smith of St. Paul, Minn., Marlene Wallace of Richmond, Va., Kim Jones of Shreveport, La., Christy Banks of Selah and Yvette C. Williams of Yakima; two brothers, Rubin and Cecil Chappell; 29 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday, also at the funeral home. Burial with military honors will be in West Hills Memorial Park.

Anne (Forenpohar) Storey
Announcement dated February 12, 2010
Anne (Forenpohar) Storey, 89, of Cle Elum died Saturday at home. Mrs. Storey was born in Cle Elum. She worked for a time at Fort MacArthur Naval Base in San Pedro, Calif., but returned to Cle Elum.

She helped her husband operate the family business, Storey's Service Station and Home Heating. She also worked at the Cle Elum Steakhouse and the Cottage Cafe.

Survivors include three daughters, Susanne Storey, Joanne Mankus and Marilyn Uribe, all of Cle Elum; and six grandchildren.

Recitation of the rosary will be at 7 p.m. today at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Cle Elum. Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, also at the church. Burial will follow in Laurel Hill Cemetery in Cle Elum. Arrangements are by Affordable Funeral Care of Ellensburg.

Norman E. Baird

Norman E. Baird, 68, of Yakima died Thursday at Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center. Mr. Baird was born in McClure, Mo., and was raised and educated in Selah. He worked at Tree Top Inc. in Selah for 23 years before ill health forced his retirement.

Survivors include his wife, Diane Baird of Yakima; two daughters, Anna Marie Kasbaum of Thompson Falls, Mont., and Chrystal Baird of Yakima; three sons, Bobb Baird and Allen Baird of Thompson Falls and Brett Baird of Klamath Falls, Ore.; a sister, Jean Cornett of Yakima; a brother,, Louie Baird of Chiloquin, Ore.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements are by Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home.

Ethel F. Erickson

Ethel Fern Erickson, 85, of Grandview died Thursday in Yakima. Mrs. Erickson was born in Grandview. She helped her husband on their farm.

Survivors include her husband, Vernon; two sons, Dennis and Ronald; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

A luncheon and time of sharing memories will be at noon Tuesday at The Sunnyside Eagles Lodge. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home and Crematory.

Jack L. Bartley

Jack LeRoy Bartley, 80, of Yakima died Thursday. Mr. Bartley was born in Midland, Mich., and moved to the Yakima area in 1946. He worked as a carpenter for many years and in 1973 went to work for the Yakima County Sheriff's Office as the Search and Rescue Coordinator.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Bartley of Yakima; two sons, Alan Bartley of Hilo, Hawaii, and Mark Bartley of Port Angeles, Wash.; two daughters, Sally Curless of Middletown, Mo., and Jackie Swanson of Yakima; two sisters, Dorothy Treusdell of Yakima and Shirley Bush of Yakima; a brother, Howard Bartley of Michigan; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

At his request, no services will be held. Arrangements are by Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.

Richard Duane Becker of Killeen, Texas, and formerly of Yakima died Feb. 10. Mr. Becker was born in Mandan, N.D., and grew up in Yakima. He served 30 years in the Air Force.

Survivors include his wife, Bunny of Killeen; daughters, Carmen of Apple Valley, Calif., Wendi of Girard, Pa., Tracy of Rancho Cordova, Calif., and Steffanie of Harker Heights, Texas; and six grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Harper-Talasek Funeral Home in Killeen.

Richard Steven Swiger, 30, of Selah died Wednesday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Swiger was born in San Mateo, Calif. He was a helicopter pilot in the U.S. armed forces.

Survivors include his wife, Lindsey Swiger of Selah; a son, Aric Swiger of Selah; his mother, Melinda McClain of Missouri; and his father, Richard Swiger of California.

A military memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Yakima Training Center. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

Laurretta F. Tuttle, 92, died Friday in Yakima. Mrs. Tuttle was born in Riverton, Wyo., and was a homemaker in Yakima.
