Hazel Schmella, 87, of Chandler, Ariz., died Sunday in Chandler.

Mrs. Schmella was born in Viking, Alberta, Canada, and raised in Toppenish. She moved to Arizona as an adult but returned to live and operate beauty shops in the Lower Yakima Valley before moving back to Arizona.

Survivors include two sons Fred T. Schmella of Toppenish and Warren R. Schmella of Tempe, Ariz.; two daughters, Rose Unruh of Chandler and Norma Ardes of Phoenix; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Zillah City Cemetery. Valley Hills Funeral Home, Zillah, is in charge of arrangements.

Waneta E. Cleghorn Hutchinson

Waneta “Neta” Earl Cleghorn Hutchinson, 75 of Byron, Ga., and formerly of the Yakima Valley, died March 24.

Mrs. Hutchinson was born in Toppenish. She raised her family in Sunnyside and made a living creating custom-made furniture with her husband. She moved to Georgia in 2008.

Survivors include five children, Roy Hutchinson Jr., Kathy Keel, Robert Hutchinson, Brad Hutchinson and Ann Longoria; two siblings, Gary and Sandy Miller; 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Lower Valley Memorial Gardens in Sunnyside.

Concetta M. Choyce
Announcement dated April 07, 2010
Concetta “Connie” M. Choyce, 87, of Algona, Wash., and formerly of Grandview, died Saturday.

Mrs. Choyce was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was a longtime Grandview resident and moved to Algona in 1973.

Survivors include three nephews, Joe Mauro of New York, John Terrill of Arizona and James Terrill of Washington; and a niece, Alice Baird of Washington.

A graveside service is at 10 a.m. today at the Grandview Cemetery. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home.

Richard Park Sr.
Announcement dated April 07, 2010
Richard “Dick” Park Sr., 78, of Moxee died Friday at his home.

Mr. Park was born in Corning, N.Y.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Park of Moxee; six children, Richard Park of Snohomish, Wash., Susan Davila of Naches, Coleen Granholm of Brownstown, Matthew Park of Lake Stevens, Wash., and Stephen Park of Yakima; a brother, Jack Park of Pavilion, N.Y.; a sister, Beverly Decker of Bath, N.Y.; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Friday at Keith and Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel. A graveside service with full military honors will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Terrace Heights Memorial Park. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.

Alta R. Tade

Alta Rae Tade, 74, of Sunnyside died March 31.

Mrs. Tade was born in Outlook and was educated in Sunnyside. She worked in the optical field for more than 30 years and established Sunnyside Optical in 1982.

Survivors include two sons, James and Kelly; her companion, Marvin Bonny; and two grandchildren.

At Mrs. Tade’s request, there will be no formal services. A celebration of life for family and friends will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Sunnyside Eagles. Arrangements are by Smith Funeral Home.

Kenneth E. Briggs

Kenneth Everett Briggs, 86, of Yakima died Sunday.

Mr. Briggs was born in Prosser and raised in Ellensburg. He served in the Armed Forces. He worked most of his life in ministry, serving congregations in Idaho, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington.

Survivors include his wife, Johanna Briggs of Yakima; two sons, Maurice Briggs and Gordon Briggs of Longview, Wash.; two daughters, Dorothy Benson and Barbara Elder, both of Yakima; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Englewood Christian Church in Yakima. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory.

Kelly G. Casey

Kelly G. Casey, 51, of Yakima died Friday.

Mr. Casey was born in Lubbock, Texas. He worked in the arts and science division of Yakima Valley Community College as a physics instructor.

Survivors include his wife, Mitzi Casey of Yakima; a brother, Robert Casey of Richardson, Texas; and a sister, Jane Casey of Pittsburgh.

A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wesley United Methodist Church. Arrangements are by Keith and Keith Funeral Home.

Eleanor I. King

Eleanor I. King, 82, of Yakima died Monday in Yakima.

Mrs. King was born in Great Falls, Mont. She lived in Zillah and Wapato for many years. She worked for numerous fruit warehouses in the Valley and for Rasco Five-and-Dime in Wapato.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Lasater of Bellevue, Wash.; a sister, Mary Lou Moore of Yakima; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home.

Barbara A. Baird

Barbara A. Baird, 67, of White Swan died Tuesday in Yakima.

Mrs. Baird was born in Herndon, Va. She moved to Ellensburg in the late 1970s and to White Swan in the mid-90s. She worked as a laborer in the fruit industry.

Survivors include her husband, Frank Pomerinkecq of White Swan; a son, Robert Baird Jr. of White Swan; three sisters, Jane Holland and Judy Koon, both of South Carolina, and Sally McBroom of White Swan; and four grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Colonial Funeral Home.

Leslie P. Verstrate

Leslie “Les” Paul Verstrate, 87, of Yakima died Monday at Crescent Health Care in Yakima.

Mr. Verstrate was born in Moxee. He served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 32 years as a mail carrier.

Survivors include his wife, Lillian Verstrate; a son, Paul Verstrate; a daughter, Yvonne McGuinness; two brothers, Bill Verstrate and Chet Verstrate; and five grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, with recitation of the rosary at 5 p.m. at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors. Mass of Christian burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the Chapel of Holy Family Catholic Church. Entombment will follow in Calvary Cemetery Mausoleum.

Alexander G. George III

Alexander “Nano” G. George III, 41, of Toppenish died Monday at his home.

Mr. George was born in Gresham, Ore., and raised on the Yakama Reservation.

Survivors include his mother, Arline George of Toppenish; three brothers, Theodore George and Anthony George, both of Toppenish, and Ambrose George of Lakewood, Wash.; four sisters, Leora George of Lakewood, Lavern George and Nora George, both of Toppenish, and Arleta George of Yakima.

Dressing services will be at 1 p.m. today at Colonial Funeral Home. Overnight services will be at the 1910 Shaker Church in White Swan, with sunrise services Thursday morning. Interment will follow in the Shaker Church cemetery.

Christel Klix

Christel Klix, 96, of Yakima died Friday. Mrs. Klix was born in Newmeunster, Germany. She emigrated to the United States in 1951. After three years in New Jersey, her family moved to Everson, Wash. She was a German and art teacher at Ferndale and Vista schools near Bellingham before retiring in 1973. She moved to Yakima at age 90.

Survivors include eight children, a sister, 14 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be April 24 at her home church, Immanuel Lutheran, in Everson. A local memorial open house will be at a later date.

Ruby J. DeFrance

Ruby J. DeFrance, 82, of Yakima died Wednesday. Mrs. DeFrance was born in Chinook, Mont., and lived in Davenport, Wash., for several years before moving back to Montana. She worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She moved to Yakima in 2009.

Survivors include her husband, Robert DeFrance of Helena, Mont.; a daughter, Cynthia Luckey of Yakima; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at a later date. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Yakima.

John Redmond

John Redmond, 87, of Yakima died April 1 at Summitview Health Care Center. Mr. Redmond was born in Seattle and served with the Merchant Marines during World War II. He moved to Yakima in 1952 and worked as a teacher at Moxee High School. In 1964, he joined Yakima Valley College as director of counseling, retiring in 1983.

Survivors include his wife, Jean Redmond of Yakima; a son, Michael Redmond of Yakima; a daughter, Sharon Redmond Siese of Seattle; a brother, Clarence Redmond of Federal Way, Wash.; and three grandchildren.

A celebration of life will be Saturday afternoon. Please contact Keith and Keith Funeral Home for details.

Barbara J. Thorp (Hall)

Barbara Jean Thorp (Hall), 70, of Toppenish died Monday in Seattle. Mrs. Thorp was born in Grand Junction, Colo., and lived in Toppenish for many years. She was a banker and a bookkeeper.

Survivors include two sons, Tim Thorp of Toppenish and Shannon Thorp of Moxee; a daughter, Tracie Crook of Moxee; and a sister, Myra Reynolds of Toppenish.

Visitation will be from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Toppenish LDS Church. Burial will follow in the Zillah City Cemetery.

Jerry M. Beatty

Jerry M. Beatty, 75, of Yakima died Wednesday.

Mr. Beatty was born in Blue Rapids, Kan., and served in the armed forces. He worked with his father for many years with Paul and Jerry Beatty Excavating.

Survivors include a son, Jerry M. Beatty Jr. of Kent, Wash..

At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Valley Hills Funeral Home and Crematory of Zillah.

Dale E. Mullenhoff

Dale E. Mullenhoff, 75, of Yakima died Thursday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Mullenhoff was born in Yakima and served in the Marines during the Korean War. He retired as a sergeant from the Yakima Police Department.

Survivors include his wife, Roxanna Mullenhoff of Yakima; two sons, Andrew Mullenhoff of Yakima and Jon Mullenhoff of Scottsdale, Ariz.; a daughter, Sandra Harris of Valley Center, Calif.; a brother, Jerry Mullenhoff of Las Vegas; a sister, Dorothy Strayer of Spokane; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.

Filemon Estrada
Announcement dated April 10, 2010
Filemon Estrada, 72, of Selah died Thursday at Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital. Mr. Estrada was born in Michoacan, Mexico. He was a massage therapist for 33 years in Mexico before moving to the Yakima area.

Survivors include his wife, Ofelia Nieves de Estrada of Selah; eight children, Fernando Estrada, Matilde Estrada, Damian Estrada, Maria A. Estrada and Maria E. Estrada, all of Yakima, Noelia Medina of Selah, and Marcela Estrada and Gabriela Estrada, both of Mexico; two sisters, Josefina Estrada and Clementina Estrada, both of Mexico; and 14 grandchildren.

Viewing will be from noon to 5 p.m. today and Sunday, with a vigil at 3 p.m. today, all at Langevin-Mussetter Funeral Home. Mr. Estrada will be transported to Mexico for a funeral Mass and burial in Cementerio Civil de Jungapeo, Michoacan, Mexico.
