Juan Mendoza-Ramirez

Death from overpass fall deemed accidental

YAKIMA, Wash. -- The death of a man who fell from a U.S. Highway 12 overpass is classified as an accident, police say.

The body of Juan Mendoza-Ramirez, 25, of Wapato was found under the overpass at the north end of Sixth Avenue in Yakima the evening of Aug. 14.

He was riding in a Ford Mustang that crashed in that area of the highway on the night of Aug. 13.

The driver, who was arrested later that night for drunken driving, did not mention he was missing a passenger while he was being booked at the Yakima County jail.

Interviewed later, the man reported that Mendoza stepped out of the car and apparently thought he was near a guardrail, not a bridge, police said.

The force of Mendoza-Ramirez's fall fatally damaged his heart, according to an autopsy conducted this week. There were no signs of foul play, Yakima County Coroner Jack Hawkins said.
