Bernhard Newman
Bernhard Edwin "Bernie" Newman, a 26-year teacher of Omak seventh-graders, died Nov. 23, 2001 at his home in Omak. He was 74.
He was born Oct. 22, 1927, in Seattle to Axel August and Hulda (Lasander) Newman. He grew up in Seattle and graduated from high school in 1946, enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War.
Services will be held later. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Precht-Harrison Chapel, Omak, is in charge of arrangements.

Buck Leese
TONASKET - Buck L. Leese, 82, Tonasket, died Nov. 27, 2001 at North Valley Nursing Home, Tonasket.
He was born Jan. 4, 1919, in Moscow, Idaho, to Harold V. and Ethel Walter Leese and grew up in Aeneas Valley, attending the Aeneas School. He joined the Navy Jan. 6, 1942, and was honorably discharged Sept. 6, 1945.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Tonasket Senior Center with the Rev. Ron Wise officiating. Memorials are suggested to North Valley Nursing Home, Tonasket.
Bergh Funeral of Oroville and Tonasket is in charge of arrangements.

Edward Kern
WENATCHEE - Longtime Okanogan resident Edward L. Kern, 95, Wenatchee, died Nov. 23, 2001 at the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born Oct. 9, 1906, to Arthur and Elizabeth (Herman) Kern in Warren, Wis., and received his education in Toma, Wis.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Grace Lutheran Church, 1408 Washington St., Wenatchee.

Roy Visser
TONASKET - Roy A. Visser, 76, Tonasket, died Dec. 1, 2001 at his home in Tonasket.
He was born March 16, 1925, in Havillah to Garrit and Martha Visser. He grew up in Havillah and attended Bonaparte School. He graduated from Tonasket High School.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. today, Dec. 5, at the Tonasket Cemetery. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church in Tonasket with the Rev. John Ramsey officiating.
Memorials are suggested to Hope Lutheran Church or Okanogan Regional Home Health and Hospice.
Bergh Funeral Service of Oroville and Tonasket is in charge of arrangements.

Alberdean Payne
Alberdean L. Payne, 80, Omak, died Nov. 25, 2001 at Mid-Valley Hospital, Omak.
She was born Feb. 7, 1921, in Wenatchee to Jesse and Alice (Helm) Palmer. She married Earl Payne in Omak June 25, 1939.
Graveside services were Nov. 30 at the Omak Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. Loren Parman officiating. Memorials are suggested to any charity.
Precht-Harrison Chapel, Omak, was in charge of arrangements.

Betty Fowlkes
Betty Batcheller Fowlkes died Dec. 1, 2001 at her home in Omak after an extended illness.
She was born Oct. 27, 1921, in Leavenworth to Lemuel and Icey Fouts. She attended school in Seattle, the Pine Grove School in Pleasant Valley and graduated from Okanogan High School.
Memorials are suggested to the Okanogan Regional Home Health and Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 5, at Okanogan Valley Memorial Gardens.
Barnes Elmway Chapel, Okanogan, is in charge of arrangements.

Karen Gordon
Karen Gordon, 59, Omak, died Dec. 1, 2001 at Valley Care Center, Okanogan.
She was born May 15, 1942, in Omak to Frank and Marjorie (Hutchings) Zabreznik. She graduated from Omak High School.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today, Dec. 5, at the Barnes Elmway Chapel, Okanogan, with the Rev. Randy Cleveland officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Children's Hospital Foundation, Seattle; Okanogan Faith Missionary Baptist Church, or any charity.
Barnes Elmway Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Dennis McCraigie
Date of Birth: Tuesday June 16, 1925
Date of Death: Saturday January 26, 2002
Okanogan County native Dennis McCraigie died recently.
He was the son of Charlie McCraigie and Sarah Bone Jim, and was born at Molson. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army from Sept. 13, 1945, to April 19, 1947.

Edward Kern
CASHMERE - Longtime Okanogan resident, Edward LeRoy Kern, 95, Wenatchee, died Nov. 23, 2001, at the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born Oct. 9, 1906, to Arthur and Elizabeth (Herman) Kern in Warren, Wis., and received his education is Tomah, Wis., where he grew up. He drove a horse-drawn buggy to school and was a member of his high school's undefeated football team.
Services were Dec. 8 at Grace Lutheran Church, Wenatchee.

Ardith M. Hallam
SPRINGDALE, Ark. - Former Omak resident Ardith M. Hallam, 73, died Jan. 20, 2002 at her home in Springdale, Ark.
She was born April 16, 1928, in Madison County, Ark., to the late Bruce and Erma Ramey Christie.
Funeral services were Jan. 25 at Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale, Ark., with the Rev. Jimmy Bennett officiating. Burial was in the Friendship Cemetery.
Sisco Funeral Chapel, Springdale, was in charge of arrangements.

Vera Nick Gauny
Vera Nick (Desatoff) Gauny, 83, Omak, died on Jan. 29, 2002.
She was born Nov. 18, 1918, in Los Angeles, Calif., to Nick and Nellie Desatoff. As a girl she traveled throughout California and Mexico with her father, delivering livestock. During World War II she worked in a factory wrapping tamales.
Funeral services were Feb. 2 at Barnes Elmway Chapel, Okanogan, with the Rev. Jim Lawson officiating. Interment followed at the Brewster Cemetery.
Barnes Elmway Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Ted C. Rollins
Ted C. Rollins, 70, Omak, died Jan. 31, 2002 at Mid-Valley Hospital, Omak.
He was born May 9, 1931, in Oakland, Calif., to John B. and Jacqueline (Olsen) Rollins. He lived in Republic before moving to Riverside in 1945. He graduated from Riverside High School in 1950.
Services were held Feb. 5 at the Riverside Lighthouse Chapel with the Revs. Alex Pfitzer and Tim Watkins officiating. Memorials are suggested to the Riverside Lighthouse Chapel veterans' memorial fund.
Barnes Elmway Chapel, Okanogan, was in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy Ellen Wolff
SUN CITY Ariz. - Former Okanogan County resident Dorothy Ellen Wolff, 79, Sun City, Ariz., died Feb. 1, 2002 at Sun Health Hospice, Peoria, Ariz.
She was born Sept. 20, 1922, in Pendleton, Ore. She finished high school, married and became a homemaker. For a number of years she and her husband ranched in the Okanogan.
Funeral service will be today, Feb. 6, at Regency Mortuary Chapel, 9850 W. Thunderbird Road, Sun City, AZ 85351. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army, P.O. Box 52177, Phoenix, AZ 85072, or the American Cancer Society, 2929 E. Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85016.
Arrangements were by Regency Mortuary, Sun City, Ariz.

Rick Howald
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Former Okanogan County resident Freddie Dale "Rick" Howald, 53, died Jan. 30, 2002 at a Las Vegas hospital.
He was born June 25, 1948, in Idaho Falls, Idaho. An Army veteran of the Vietnam War with distinguished service medals, he was a retired fire marshal and manager for Fluor Daniel and a one-year resident of Las Vegas.
Memorial services were Feb. 1 at the German-American Club in Las Vegas.

Herta Gavitt
Herta Gavitt, 55, Omak, died March 27, 2002 at Sacred Heart Hospital, Spokane.
She was bon in Germany June 29, 1946, and married Chuck Gavitt in 1965 in Germany. They owned and operated several different businesses and retired in 1992.
A private service will be held today, April 3, in Spokane.
Dodd and Ball Funeral Home, Spokane, is in charge of arrangements.

'Spud' Cunningham
Lawrence Fredrick "Spud" Cunningham, 90, Okanogan, died March 26, 2002 at Mid-Valley Hospital.
He was born Feb. 17, 1912, in Colfax to Loren and Lulu (Young) Cunningham. His family homesteaded on the south half of the Colville Indian Reservation when he was 5 years old.
Graveside services were March 29 at the Okanogan City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to the Okanogan County Junior Rodeo Association, P.O. Box 464, Omak.
Barnes Elmway Chapel, Okanogan, was in charge of arrangements.

Jack R. Fateley
RENTON - Former Omak resident Jack R. Fateley, 74, died Feb. 3, 2002 at his home in Renton.
He was born July 15, 1927, in Elk River, Idaho. The family moved in 1936 to Omak, where he attended school and graduated in 1945.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 6, at Omak Memorial Cemetery with the Okanogan American Legion post and Gordon Kibbe officiating.
A celebration will be held at the Horizon Estates clubhouse, 715 Quince, immediately following the graveside service. The family invites anyone interested.

Earl G. 'Dusty' Goman
ENTIAT - Earl G. "Dusty" Goman, 69, a lifetime resident of the Entiat Valley, died March 24, 2002.
He was born Dec. 27, 1932, to George and Vivian Goman and grew up with his parents and brothers, Walter, Lionel, Gordon and Thomas, and sisters, Baby Pearl, Celia and Lauvay, at their home in Winesap. He graduated from Entiat High School in 1954.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 5, at the Friends Church in Entiat.

Loy Reed Williams
Loy Reed Williams, 81, died March 29, 2002 at the Central Washington Hospital, Wenatchee.
He was born Feb. 27, 1921, in Bixby, Okla., to Loy Sr. and Juanita Williams, and grew up in northern Texas. He took his first flight lesson at age 16 and, according to his family, went onto become the youngest commercial airline pilot in the United States.
Graveside services were April 2 in the Omak Memorial Cemetery with Ed Rodgers officiating.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel, Omak, is in charge of arrangements.
